I sighed as Percy helped me up onto the small stage. It's the day before our fundraiser and we're performing at Evergreen's. We need to get the word out as much as possible, there's quite a few people here so this should help. Percy handed me the microphone and I smiled.
"Thanks."
He nodded and kissed the side of my head. Emily was talking quietly with Cody behind us. When I turned to ask her if she was ready I saw Cody gently kiss her cheek. I smiled and resisted the urge to coo over them. Emily whispered something back to Cody and came to stand next to me, ready in position. I moved the microphone away from my mouth so nobody could hear us.
"That was adorable, just so you know."
Emily rolled her eyes but smiled softly at me.
"Yeah we're doing good, though we still don't have a title."
I shrugged.
"No need to rush things, he isn't going anywhere anytime soon."
Emily smiled and glanced back at Cody. He was swinging his drum sticks in between his fingers.
"Yeah, I guess not."
I gave Mr. Evergreen a thumbs up and he dimmed the lights a little. People started to clap lightly as I spoke quietly into the microphone.
"Thanks for coming everyone. We're The Siren's Shadow! Tonight is a special night! We're performing to try and raise money for Crestwood's orphanage. There is a moneybox near the cashier for any money you might want to donate! If you have any questions their is information flyers on the front desk. So sit back, relax have some good food and enjoy our newest song 'Maybe."
I moved to go sit behind my portable electronic piano. We all glanced at each other before starting the beat. Percy winked at me as we began.
Annabeth, Percy, Both
"Maybe it's meant to happen
Maybe you and I could fall in love
Maybe I'm out of practice
But you're still the one I wake up
Thinking of.
Maybe I might get famous
Maybe you and I could
See the world at large
Maybe I can't explain it
But you're still the person
Who will always have my heart…
Life is full of maybes
We'll never know what's next so
We'll sing!
Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh
We could fall together
And possibily we could sing forever
Woah oh oh oh oh
You and I…"
I locked eyes with Percy and I gave him a soft smile while hitting the note. Emily was silently cooing over us out of the corner of my eye. The audience seemed to be too.
"Maybe you'll find another
Maybe I might end up homeless, envious
Maybe we'll hate it each other –
That's impossible! Cause I will
Always want you here."
I smiled, Percy seemed to burst out that part of the song nervously. I lifted my hand quickly to blow him a kiss.
"Maybe I'll die of cancer
Maybe all the starts above us will explode
All of that doesn't matter
Cause in the end we'll never know
Oh oh
Life is full of maybes
We'll never know what's next so
We'll sing!
Woah oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh oh
We could fall together
And possibly we could sing forever
Woah oh oh oh oh
You and I…
You and I
Oh
Maybe is all I can say
I can guarantee you anything
But I'll try
You and I…"
As we finished the song the restaurant was filled with applause. I waved shyly as Emily and Percy bowed. I did my handshake with Cody as I passed him to climb down the stage. When I reached the bottom Mr. Evergreen and his daughter were already waiting for me. I brightened and walked over to my backpack. I pulled out a CD and carefully handed it to the young girl.
"So I figured our biggest fan should have our first homemade CD before anyone else."
April's eyes widened and she squealed before tackling me in a tight hug. I gasped as the air was sucked out of me but managed to pat her lightly on the back. April pulled away from me and looked down at our new CD awestruck.
A picture that Tanner took of us was the cover. I had a microphone in my hand, smiling slightly at the camera. Emily and Percy were on each side of me, Emily was glancing down at her guitar and Percy had his head facing me, so you saw the side of his face. Cody was behind all of us; his drumsticks raised high in the air.
On the back was a song list. Behind the list was a photo copy of the picture Emily drew a while back. A blonde girl was sitting on the ground, her knees in front of her. Behind her, her shadow was growing. Her mouth was silent but there was a thought bubble above her head filled with nothing but music.
April thanked me again and rushed off to show her Dad. I smiled and shook my head before turning back towards my friends.
Emily:
I watched with a smile on my face as Annabeth was crushed by April's death grip. I caught a glimpse of my drawing on the back and mentally jumped for joy. I'm so glad Ben was able to put that on there. I have to give the guy credit; he really does know what he's doing.
Warm arms slowly wrapped around my body. I was pulled backwards into a even warmer chest and I sighed in bliss when I saw who it was. Cody leaned down to kiss my cheek and whispered in my ear,
"Is this okay?"
I nodded and snuggled into his embrace. His gave me a little squeeze and I could feel his chin resting on my head. I closed my eyes slowly, just enjoying finally able to be like this with him. Suddenly Cody pulled away and I opened my eyes to ask him what's wrong but I noticed Percy and Annabeth were staring at us. Percy looked a little grossed out but Annabeth was smiling sweetly.
"Uh…"
Annabeth waved it off and pointed to the door.
"Percy and I were going to head to the orphanage for a bit. You two should stay and hang out, or go and do something fun together."
I glanced back at Cody and he shrugged.
"Sure we can do something Em."
I nodded and stood by Annabeth as we watched the boys pack up. She nudged me.
"So I take it you and Cody are doing good?"
I nodded slowly and bit my lip.
"Yeah we're….really good. I wasn't sure what all that was but I do know I liked it."
Annabeth smiled and we fell into a comfortable silence. After the boys were done and the cars were packed we paired up and went our separate ways. I sighed as I settled into Cody's truck. He reached over to intertwine our fingers and I smiled absentmindedly. I could feel his thumb gently rubbing my hand as we drove.
When we started to slow down I sat up. I noticed we were parked at the park. I smiled, Cody and I used to play here all the time when we were younger.
"You ready?"
I smiled shyly and gave him a weird look.
"Ready for what?"
Cody grinned and reached into the back seat to grab two toy light sabers. I laughed as he handed me one. We used to play Jedi all the time when we were younger, guess it's time to recreate that.
"Oh yes! C'mon loser let's go!"
He chuckled as I dove out of the car. We raced to an open space and I crouched down slightly, I turned on the light saber and as it started to glow I fake glared at Cody.
"You ready to be destroyed Anderson?"
Cody smirked and turned his own light saber on. He held it up in a ready position and nodded.
"Sure, only if you're ready to eat those words McNeil."
I laughed as I made a move to stab him, it has begun!
0~0~0~0~0
"You got a lot better since we were kids Em."
I smiled out of breath and nodded.
"You too."
Cody offered his hand to me and I took it so he could help me up. We had been star wars battling for the past forty five minutes. When I was finally standing I noticed Cody hadn't let go of my hand. I smiled shyly up at him while he stared down at me with a weird look in his eye.
He leaned down slowly and I shut my eyes. Soon I could feel his warm lips move against mine and I mentally sighed. This is how my life should be, kissing my best friend after intense light saber battles.
When Cody pulled away he gently rested his forehead against mine. I slowly opened my eyes to give him a lazy grin.
"Nothing's changed Cody." I whispered. "We're still best friends, we always will be."
Cody responded by kissing me again. As I wrapped my arms around him I couldn't imagine being happier then I was in this moment.
Annabeth:
"C'mon Percy! They're waiting for me!"
Percy chuckled and grabbed his guitar from the back seat. I waited until he was at my side to grab his hand. He smiled as he intertwined our fingers.
"I know Wise Girl I'm coming!"
I grinned and tugged him up to the front door. Once we were in the backyard I smiled softly. All the kids were out here playing. The grass was finally green and the flowers I planted a while back were finally growing. Taylor was quietly reading, Isabelle and Ashley were swinging on the new swings and Jacob was sitting on the grass playing with his army toys. David was holding Anna, waving a toy bear around her head.
"Hey guys!"
Instantly everyone turned to look at us and happy greetings were exchanged. David smiled as all the kids crowded around me. Ashley pointed to Percy.
"He has a guitar are you going to sing for us Annabeth?"
I nodded and gestured for Percy to sit down, he did. I ran a hand through my hair and smiled at Jacob. I leaned over to ruffle his hair and he laughed.
"Yeah I am, I actually made this song special for you guys."
Isabelle grinned and leaned forward.
"Really?" She asked excitedly.
I nodded and gestured to the yard.
"You guys called me your hero when I helped with your yard. Jacob called me a solider so I want to be what you see me as. Just listen okay?"
Everyone nodded and Percy slowly began to play.
"La da da da da da, la da da da da [x2]
Where did all the people go?
They got
scared when the lights went low.
I'll get you through it nice and slow,
When the world's spinning out of control.
Afraid of what they might lose
Might get scraped or they might get bruised.
You could beg them, what's the use?
That's why it's called a moment of truth
I'll get it if you need it,
I'll search if you don't see it,
You're thirsty, I'll be rain,
You get hurt, I'll take your pain.
I know you don't believe it,
But I said it and I still mean it,
When you heard what I told you,
When you get worried I'll be your soldier."
Jacob gasped and excitedly squeezed his toy army guy.
"Funny when times get hard
At the last moment when
You're supposed to charge
Always on the longest yard,
Oh they feel their feet getting cold
Hiding here, hiding there
Find them underneath the stairs
People hiding everywhere
Trying to be still like a stone.
I'll get it if you need it
I'll search if you can't see it
You're thirsty, I'll be rain
You get hurt I'll take your pain
I know you don't believe it
But I said it and I still mean it
When you heard what I told you
When you get worried
I'll be your soldier."
I shared a smile with Percy as he continued strumming. David smiled at me as Ashley wiped away small tears. Isabelle looked awe struck while Taylor had a small smile on his face. Jacob was now swinging his two army toys around.
"My aim is so true
I wanna show you
I'll try forever
I'm never gonna say surrender
I'll get it if you need it
I'll search if you can't see it
You're thirsty, I'll be rain
You get hurt I'll take your pain
I know you don't beileve it
But I said it and I still mean it
When you heard what I told you
When you get worried I'll be your soldier.
I'll be your soldier
We'll I'll be, oh I'll be your soldier.
I'll be your soldier
I'll be your soldier."
As I ended the song everyone seemed to be smiling. I opened my arms for Jacob and he jumped into them. As I squeezed the small boy I felt a small tear roll down my face. He nuzzled his nose into my neck and whispered.
"You're my sold-ger..."
I know the ending wasn't it's best but I had to finish it quickly. My Mom insists on checking my body for more marks. They think I have the chicken pox.
