Lulu looks at him when she opens the door.
"Oh it's you."
She turns on her heels and walks down the hallway. She has left the door open so Nick presumes he's expected to follow. He calls to Lulu that he's going to look in on Anne first. He enters the bedroom and Anne is fast asleep. He walks quietly over to her and strokes her fringe off her face. She sleepily opens her eyes and looks at him, her face breaks into her smile.
"You go back to sleep honey. Daddy loves you."
Anne tries to keep her eyes open but they slowly close and she's asleep once more. Nick bends down and kisses his daughter on her cheek before leaving the room, giving a last look back to check that she's still sleeping. He enters the front room to find Lulu standing with her arms folded in front of her. He stops in the doorway and stands with his hands in his pockets.
"Shall we sit down Lulu?"
"You can if you want."
Nick stays where he is.
"Why are you here?"
"I want to try and put things right, to see if there's anything I can do."
"There's nothing you can do Nick. You've done plenty already."
Nick spreads his hands out.
"Lulu, there's something wrong. You've been acting out of character. First the move and then wanting us to get together."
"Where as you Nick have acted completely in character. Just thinking about yourself and what you want. Bringing in lawyers and making me think you wanted to get together, when you had no intention at all."
"That's not fair Lulu..."
Nick stops knowing that what he's about say wouldn't help anything. He starts again.
"Lulu, I'm sorry if I led you on. I didn't mean to. I was upset because Jenny had told me she didn't want to see me again and when you...when we kissed, it brought back too many memories and I reacted to them."
"And what about the lawyers?"
"I can't apologise for that Lulu. You left me no choice, or I would be letting you take Anne out of my life."
"So I'm just stuck here in Pittsburgh, because of you! I didn't plan on spending my whole life here Nick. I want somewhere more exciting. I certainly don't want Anne growing up here."
"How will Anne be happier anywhere else. She's happy in her school and she has family around. How is changing that better for Anne. You can't complain about the school, there isn't a better one in the country. You're not wanting to move for Anne, it's for yourself and Chicago was a wrong choice. It wasn't a better job, you would probably be worse off, you had no support system there..."
"But it was my choice to make, not yours."
Nick is trying to keep his temper in check.
"Lulu, you know that's not reasonable. I have the right to try to keep Anne close by."
"You shouldn't have Nick. I don't want to be here."
Nick takes a step nearer as he sees tears well in her eyes. He softens his tone.
"Lulu what's wrong? I want to help."
Lulu turns her back on him.
"You can't help Nick. With your perfect life: The job that was mine, Anne's love when it's convenient for you, beautiful girlfriend."
Nick touches her shoulder.
"Lulu?"
"I'm tired Nick. What happened to my life. I was director of Lsp, I was married to a Doctor, we went to galleries and the theatre and dancing. Now I have nothing but work and home. I love Anne but I'm tired of these walls, this town, the job. Tired of being alone."
Nick has a thousand things he could say, but knows that none of them will help at this moment, and will just sound condescending and trite.
"Lulu I'm sorry. I want to help, I really do."
Lulu lets out a sigh.
"As I said Nick, you've already helped enough. Now please leave."
"Lulu, I don't want to leave you like this."
Lulu slowly turns around.
"You do it all the time."
She walks around him and leaves the room. Nick follows her out as she is going up the stairs.
"Lulu."
She doesn't respond and Nick hears her bedroom door open and close. He stands there in the silence wondering what he should do. He quietly slips out of the house, he unlocks his car and sits in. He puts the key in the ignition, looking up at Lulu's window, the room is in darkness. He sits back in his seat, deep in thought. He wants to help, but doesn't know how to go about it. Perhaps he needs to talk to someone who would understand better than him, but would he be betraying Lulu if he did that. He feels that offering to take Anne more would get his head bitten off, same with trying to help her work situation. He really is at a loss. He glances back up at the window and is sure he sees the curtain move. He lets out a sigh and moves to turn on the car when his message alert goes off. He looks at the clock and figures it's Jenny, wondering where he is. Despite his concern for Lulu he can't help a smile at the thought of Jenny and takes out his phone, but it's from Lulu. It's just two words:
'Don't go.'
