May 2, Kagome's Office, 8:52 AM
Kagome stared blearily at her computer screen, not really seeing the spreadsheet she was working on. The Excel formula she was trying to run kept returning an error, but her sleep-deprived mind was at a loss to figure out why.
Her phone vibrated twice, making her jump. An email. Looking for any excuse to turn her eyes on something not involving absolute cell references and #N/A errors, she picked up her phone to check the incoming email. It was from Kouga. Suddenly she was wide awake.
With shaking fingers, she tapped the screen and opened the message.
Ok
That was all it said. Two letters, not even a period to properly tie it up.
Tears prickled at her eyes. A lengthy email sent in the wee hours of the morning, detailing her hopes, dreams, and grievances, and that was the only reply she got.
Ok
She realized now that she had been half hoping that he'd try to get her to stay with him, that he would sweet talk her, woo her, guilt her, tell her he loved her.
Ok
So much wasted effort. Wasted time. Wasted tears.
Ok
Just like that, it was over.
Ok
Kagome's office phone rang.
Ok
Rang again.
Ok
She had to pick up.
Ok
"Evergreen Marketing, this is Kagome Higurashi."
"Hi Kagome, this is Shiori with Coral Genomics, how are you?"
Ok
"I'm— alright. Yourself?"
"Just peachy," Shiori chirruped.
"What can I do for you this morning?" Kagome asked. More brightly than she felt, she hoped. Coral Genomics was one of her favorite clients.
"Well, we're gearing up to pitch some new research to the board, and I was hoping we could schedule a meeting this week to talk about it and come up with some nice visuals to present."
Ok
"Sure," Kagome said, opening her calendar to check when she was free. She scanned the week's schedule. "How does Thursday at 10:30 sound to you?"
"Perfect! Do you mind if I bring my new hire along? He could use the experience with meetings and such."
Ok
"No problem," Kagome replied. "See you on Thursday."
"Okay, great! Talk to you then!"
Kagome hung up the phone and looked up at the owl-shaped clock perched on her wall, which currently read 9:15.
Ok
Was she worth so few words? So little thought?
The relationship had lasted two years, and yet, it all ended with—
Ok
But Kagome was not okay.
