Chapter 25
Slipping Away
The wind quickly dies down. Caleb falls. He looks up to see John standing over him. "I told you I would kill you" says John. Caleb smiles up at him, breathing heavily as the life begins to drain from his body. "It's over."
"That's what you think." Caleb looks at Sam then back at John. "After all…" John looks over at Sam and quickly runs over to her. "Sam!" he says holding her head. She doesn't move. "Sam its John!... Please wake up!" Caleb laughs. "It's too late John…" Caleb coughs. John angrily looks back at Caleb. "Tell me how to stop this!" John runs over and pulls Caleb up by the collar. "How do you stop this!" he shouts.
"You can't." "What do you mean you can't?" Caleb smiles. "I mean… any minute now… She will wake up. But not as Sam…. Livvie will awaken to her true self… A vampire."
"Screw you Caleb." John pushes him back down. Caleb moves his hand to his chest. Something catches John's eye. "The Ring" he says. John grabs Caleb's hand and rips the ring off of it with ease. He runs over to Sam and puts it on. "It's no use John…"
John places his hand on Sam's heart like Caleb did. "Sam please….. Come back to me… you need to fight…. This is your body. Your life." "It's not going to work!" he shouts. "You have to fight for your son… he needs you… I need you." The ring doesn't glow. "Dammit!" Caleb's blood starts to spread on the floor.
"There has to be something I can do!... I won't let go Sam." John strokes her hair. "Please."
"Olivia…" he says as his voice gets weaker. "Olivia…. Come to me…." "No! Don't listen to him… Sam please stay with me!" He strokes her cheek trying to connect with her. "You wish she had a choice… But Livvie has already taken over… Say goodbye to her John….. Because you're never getting her back." John freezes. A word of Caleb's pops out at him. John looks closely at Caleb's ring and remembers something from their first confrontation. "That's it" he whispers to himself.
John closes his eyes and places his hand back over Sam's heart. "Give it a rest John…" He blocks Caleb out. "Please let this work…" he whispers to himself. Caleb's ring starts to glow.
