25. Chapter

Magnus said yes. Of course he said yes to go to The Hamptons and it was all he ever talked about. He was excited to meet Alec's family, well his father and his mistress and his baby brother Max and Alec had to admit he was excited to introduce his boyfriend. But there was still that one problem that Robert didn't know Alec was bringing Magnus along, or that he even had a boyfriend. He had talked it over with Jace, and Jace told Alec to stop being scared and just tell Robert the truth. But Alec was always scared even though he didn't show it, but on the inside he was scared every day. He was scared when he walked out of his door and went to school. He was scared to walk into the wrong people or say the wrong thing. He was scared to walk into a bar and get drunk and then mindlessly say something gay-ish. He didn't care that people knew he was gay, he was proud of who he was, but that didn't take the frightened feeling inside.

New York was an open minded city and gay marriage was legal, but that didn't stop the hate crimes that was happening around the streets. And that didn't only include some ones sexuality but also some ones skin color or social background. Alec was happy being in New York, and moving to the city only made him stronger and more tolerant towards himself.

So if he told Robert about Magnus and he didn't approve, everything would backfire. It would feel like a loss and Alec would feel like he was back on step one. His father's opinion meant a lot and even though his words were harsh and unfair, Alec listened too carefully. And now when Robert wasn't around things were so much easier for Alec and he would like to keep it that way. But Alec really wanted to know if he could stand up against his father and that Alec had become stronger the past year. The only way to do that was to show up to The Hamptons.

Alec took a deep breath and turned to look at Magnus and grabbed his hand. Magnus turned his attention towards him and smiled brightly. That smile made Alec breath out in relief and leaned his head against his shoulder. They were on their way and they would be there around an hour or two. Jace was driving and chatting up with Clary. Simon was sitting next to Magnus and leaning against the window, moving his head from side to side as he listened to some bas music on his headphones. It was a very nice feeling being surrounded by all the familiar people that each meant something different to Alec. It made the trip to The Hamptons so much more comfortable. A road trip was a good way to start of the day.

The only person missing was Lilac. That cute little girl that had the most amazing bubbly soul and always, always, made Alec happy. Magnus couldn't take Lilac with him though, first of all Alec tried to tell him it wouldn't be a good idea because showing his father his boyfriend would be a heart attack worthy enough. And adding the fact that his boyfriend had a daughter would only make things worse and confuse Robert. Robert was confused enough that Alec liked boys and he would be more confused to know that someone could like girls and boys. And Magnus agreed. Catarina, being the amazing best friend, took in Lilac with wide arms. Magnus had told her that she had to help Lilac keep up on her homework because she had lost a couple of days of school. But the way Catarina winked at Lilac and Lilac giggled, told Alec that they weren't going to make much homework.

And now they were on their way to The Hamptons. Robert was the lucky winner of the house after the divorce and decided to move in there with his mistress. Alec never liked the idea of Robert and his new girlfriend, fooling around in his second childhood home. He had a lot of good and bad memories at that place, and now they were intoxicating it. He tightened his grip on Magnus's hand and sighed. He really hoped that Magnus wouldn't be angry with him for not telling his dad about him. He couldn't handle Magnus being angry, and Robert and his girlfriend giving each other love eyes through the entire weekend.

"You don't have to be nervous," Magnus whispered against Alec's temple and kissed it softly. "Everything is going to be okay." Alec closed his eyes and leaned into the touch and smiled.

"I hope you're right."

"I'm right here with you, darling." And those words made Alec feel so much better than he did 2 seconds ago and he could actually go to sleep.

Alec felt a bump and startled awake before rubbing his eyes. Jace turned into a driveway and Alec saw the familiar white house with the dark blue roof. He saw the old swing Robert and himself had put up when Alec was only 9. He saw the bench on the porch, the same bench where he had shared his first kiss with Ryan. He leaned against the window and watched as the front door opened and Max came running out, screaming for his brothers. Jace opened the door and greeted Max with a big hug before walking towards Clary's door and helped her out. Alec hesitantly opened the door and slipped out taking in the familiar scent of the sea and apples. The house was surrounded by the most delicious apple trees, and even though it wasn't the season for apples and the trees were dying, it still smelled like apples. Alec didn't get to take one step when he felt arms around his waist. He looked down into those peaceful brown eyes, reflecting through the glass of his glasses. Max was smiling widely up at him causing that significant dimple to appear on his right cheek. His brown hair was getting long and fell over his eyes every time he leaned to hug Alec.

"I'm so glad you're here," Max mumbled against Alec and Alec smiled and tousled his hair.

"Me too, Max," Alec said and knelt down to embrace Max tighter. He snuggled his head into the crook of his neck and took in the sweet and familiar scent. Max always smiled liked old comic books and sea salt. "I've missed you." He tightened his grip and heard Max gasp a laugh and Alec moved away and got up on his feet.

"I've missed you too big bro," Max said and smiled before glancing behind him. "Who's that?" He pointed behind Alec and kept staring, his eyes shining, like he had just seen the most amazing thing. Alec turned and saw Magnus stand on the other side of the car helping Simon with his guitar.

"Th- that's-" Alec stammered and took a deep breath and looked back down at his brother. "-um, Magnus. My boyfriend." Max's eyes kept looking at Magnus as he pushed Simon's guitar into his chest, making Simon stumble backwards. He then walked towards Alec and Max with his pretty smile on his lips.

"That's a cool boyfriend," Max said and his eyes followed Magnus until he stood right in front of him.

"Hey there Max," Magnus said and smiled sweetly. Max blushed and looked away before glancing up again.

"You look like the characters in my manga books," Max said, completely fascinated with the tight and colorful clothes. The gelled up hair with glitter streaks and the pretty jewelry that were glistening around Magnus's neck and on his fingers.

"I'll take that as a compliment," Magnus said and turned to Alec for guidance.

"It's his favorite books to read. It's like, drawings but in a specific way. I can't explain it, only that they have big eyes," Alec said and took Magnus's hand. "And you really should take that as a compliment." Magnus smiled and leaned to give Alec a small peck on the lips. Alec blushed and glanced towards the door to see if Robert was making an appearance.

He wasn't.

Jace and Clary was walking in with the suitcases and Simon was following suit glancing around, probably looking for Isabelle.

"Is dad around?" Alec asked and looked back down at Max and Max nodded and pointed to the house.

"He just had to take the last pancake of the pan," Max said and licked his lips. "It's his coconut pancakes. He made them, specially, for you." There was definitely something going on. Robert didn't make Alec's favorite pancakes for nothing, and he wasn't acting nice over texts, telling him he loved Alec. Alec felt his body go cold and the hairs on his neck raise. He didn't have a good feeling about this. And he regretted coming here and bringing Magnus into this mess. He was so selfish.

"Alexander," Alec heard the familiar voice of authority and automatically turned and looked up at the porch. The man in his nightmares, where he turned everyone Alec loved against him and the man in his dreams about being accepted by the man who raised him and taught him everything he knew. He was standing with his thick black messy hair and a thick black beard. His blue eyes were clearer than Alec's, almost like ice and they were looking right into his very soul. He was wearing a dark green/black lumber jack shirt with a dirty white t-shirt underneath. The t-shirt had flour and marmalade on it, telling Alec that Robert had indeed been making pancakes. His jeans were tight and shiny and his shoes were a pair of old dirty boots. He walked towards them and stopped right in front of Alec and Alec sucked in his breath.

"Alexander," he repeated and embraced Alec into a tight a hug. Alec's blue eyes widened and glanced towards his father only seeing his hair. Is he hugging me? Alec hesitantly moved his arms up to hug his father back. He closed his eyes and let himself be lost into the love of a father he had missed for so long. His arms were strong and protective, like they always were when Alec was upset when was little. Robert pulled away and smiled at Alec. "You have no idea how happy I am that you are here, Alexander. When you told me you were coming I was so thrilled. We have a lot to catch up on." Alec narrowed his eyes before nodding slowly. This was so unreal. Robert turned his attention to Magnus and his smile faltered.

"Who's this?"

"Oh I'm-" Magnus said and went for a handshake when Alec caught his hand and held it close to him.

"This is Magnus Bane," Alec said and kept looking at his father, just waiting for something. "My boyfriend."

"Boyfriend?" Robert looked taken aback and looked Magnus up and down. "You didn't tell me you had a boyfriend. Why didn't you tell me you were bringing him along?" Magnus was about to respond when Alec interrupted him.

"Why would I tell you about my boyfriend? You wouldn't have let me take him with me if I told you I was seeing someone," Alec said and kept his eyes firmly on his father. "Seeing a boy. The last time I saw you, you screamed at me. Telling me how worthless I was and what a disgusting faggot I was. You told me to get out of your sight and never come back. And I planned to do just that, but I missed Max. I'm here for Max and that's it. We don't have to stay under the same roof as you if that makes you uncomfortable."

"Alec," Robert's voice was flat and he looked at Alec with wide eyes. "Those words have been haunting me this whole year. I've been trying to contact you but you never picked up-"

"Because I knew what you had to say!" Alec snapped and he saw Max jump back in shock. "I didn't need you to call me every fucking day to tell me how disgusting I am, and how I've disappointed you. What kind of father would call up his own son just to yell at him, huh?"

"That's not why I called you," Robert said his voice getting low. "I wanted to apologize."

"That's bull," Alec said and couldn't help but laugh at how stupid this argument was. They had been through this once and now they were here again, a year later at the exact same spot as last time. "I don't believe you. Just tell me the truth and then get out of my life!"

"Yes, you disgusted me at first!" Robert raised his voice and Max grabbed onto his father sleeve and tugged on it.

"Dad," Max whispered. "Please don't yell at each other. Not again." Robert yanked his sleeve loose and pointed at Alec.

"You have no right to come here and yell at me. And surely not with your boyfriend tagging along," Robert looked towards Magnus and back at Alec. "You threw this bombshell at me that you were gay, making out with boys all of the sudden and I freaked out! It was disgusting and immoral, and I couldn't take it."

"You forced it out of me!" Alec said and slapped Robert's finger away. "You forced me to tell why I was acting up and sneaking out. You forced me to tell you why I was stealing gay magazines. And you knew why, but yet, as I was crying in front of you, begging you not make me say it out loud, you forced it out of me. I wasn't ready to come out to you. I had just told Jace and I was going to keep it that way. But no, you always have to know everything!"

"This is not my fault," Robert snapped. "I'm sorry that I cared for my son. I'm sorry that I didn't like my son stealing and me being called up at work because my son was caught shop lifting. This is your fault! If you had just told me-"

"Like it would have made everything better," Alec said and sighed. "I would still have been a disgusting fag and a disappointment. You can't make yourself look any better, dad. You're a hypocrite and I hate you!" Alec turned around and ran towards a small dusty path that led down to the ocean. He felt bad for leaving Magnus there alone, but he couldn't let them see him cry. He fell down in the sand and covered his eyes with his hands and let the tears flood. He shouldn't have come here because he knew this would happen. It was like his life reversed and now he had to start over. He felt warm arms surround him from behind and his head snapped up and turned to see Magnus leaning against him from behind. His chin rested on Alec's shoulder and he glanced towards Alec.

"Are you okay?" He whispered and Alec felt his body tremble. He turned around and embraced Magnus as he kept crying. He couldn't open his mouth as it trembled and his voice was being choked on the many things he still had to say. Magnus made soothing sounds into Alec's ear as he kept caressing his back. "It's okay. It's okay." Alec shook his head and a strangle cry escaped from his throat and he tightened his grip on Magnus's jacket. He was afraid to let him go.

"Alec?" Magnus asked and tried to get out of his hold but couldn't. "Baby, I think we need to talk." Alec shook his head and snuggled closer.

"No," he mumbled, sounding like a spoiled kid. "Please, I just want to hold you." Magnus sighed and rubbed his hand up and down a bit slower.

"How about I talk and you listen?" Alec nodded slowly and crept closer to his boyfriend. "Good. Now, I'm very sad to hear what happened between you and your dad. What he said at that time is not acceptable and I understand why it's so hard for you to forgive him. But I have to say that you should have listened to him back there." Alec moved away and stared at Magnus in shock. Was he saying he was suppose to listen to his father bad mouthing him?

"Don't look at me like I'm the bad guy, Alec. You invited me here, not even mentioning it to your father that I as coming along," Magnus raised a daring eyebrow and Alec looked down feeling guilty. "What I was about to say is that your father actually apologized to you but you didn't listen. He tried to explain to you how hard it has been for him. And then you come up here with an attitude and a boyfriend. You were flaunting your sexuality in his face."

"I was not!" Alec exclaimed and was about to defend himself when Magnus leaned forward and his lips were almost touching Alec's. Alec sucked in his breath and glanced down at those delicious lips.

"Shut up and let me finish," Magnus said in a husky voice and leaned away, hearing a disappointed whimper from Alec. "Flaunting your sexuality in the face of someone who doesn't approve or might be confused about homosexuality will only make them mad. Your father is clearly trying to understand and the only thing you did was yelling. You have a grudge, and it's clear, but you should still remember to listen. Especially when it's your father. My father didn't understand that I liked boys too and it confused him when I was with a boy and then a girl. And I had to accept that and then I had to make him understand me and then accept me. And I did."

It was interesting to listen to Magnus's speech because it made sense. Alec knew he hadn't listened to his father because he was still having a grudge. And the words, I'm sorry, he had heard them, but chose to ignore them. It was also nice to hear something from Magnus's past.

"You father didn't accept you?"

"Well, my adoptive father. My real father never got to know me being bisexual," Magnus said and grabbed Alec's hand in the sand. "But this is not about me."

"I want to know about you," Alec said and straightened up.

"Of course you will, someday," Magnus said and smiled. "But first you need to go up at talk to your father. Listen to him and try to understand. And most importantly apologize to him."

"I'll do my best," Alec said and got up and dusted off the sand from his pants.

"And I cant ask for more than that," Magnus said and smiled up at Alec. Alec smiled back and leaned down to give him a kiss.

"I'm sorry," Alec said and pulled back. "For bringing you here without telling my father about you. And then letting you witness me and my father fight and then leaving you to run off to cry for myself."

"Apology accepted," Magnus said and smiled proudly. "Now go. I'm staying here for a little while, enjoying the sunset." Alec turned around and saw that the sun was slowly going down, disappearing behind the line of water. He really wanted to stay with Magnus and watch it with him, but he wanted to talk and apologize to his father more.

He went back up the path and he felt his heart hammer fast against his chest. It was like he had to come out all over again, because what he felt was anxiety and nerves attack his nerves. The path was longer and the house kept being further away than Alec thought and when he finally reached the front door handle he took a deep breath and opened.

The hallway was the same as always. It was white and light, with the only speck of colors coming from the many shoes and coats that were placed around. The living room was connected with the hallway, with tall white walls and a gold chandelier hanging down from the middle. The corner sofa was big and made out of light green fabric. It was suffocated with many cushions in different colors and patterns and Alec's friends were sitting on the sofa, eating pancakes. Alec scanned the room, not seeing Max or Isabelle. He turned to the left, walking into the next room, avoiding the others.

Robert was sitting by the smooth stone kitchen counter on a bar stool with a beer in his hands. The kitchen was placed against the walls and snooped around the corner. There was a counter table placed in middle containing a coffee machine. It was all made of smooth grey rock and the cabinets were white. The refrigerator was large and silver with many photo stickers of Alec's childhood. Alec cleared his throat and took a step in. Robert turned around and straightened up when he saw Alec.

"I thought you left," Robert said and blinked like he had to make sure Alec was really there. Alec walked towards his father and pulled out a bar stool and sat down.

"I'm sorry," Alec mumbled and glanced up at his father. "I'm sorry for yelling at you and not listening. I knew what you were trying to say but I think it confused me that you suddenly apologized. Just like you were confused about my sexuality and then I choose to flaunt it in your face like some kind of rebel." Robert smiled slowly and grabbed Alec's hand gently.

"I'm sorry too," he said and Alec smiled sadly. "For all the things I said. I was horrible and I'm a horrible father."

"You're really not," Alec said and laughed nervously. "You reacted like that because you were confused."

"The way I reacted was unacceptable," Robert said and removed his hand. "And I'm truly, really, sorry about everything, Alexander."

"Thanks dad," Alec said and smiled, a tear slipped down his cheek. "I feel like shit for being so stubborn not taking your calls. We could have been better by now if I had just picked up."

"What happened, happened. And there was a reason for that," Robert said. "Maybe if things had gone differently you wouldn't have met Magnus." Alec blushed and rubbed his neck.

"Yeah," he said and couldn't help but smile wider. "I love him."

"And he loves you," Robert said. "I really like him. He told me to relax and go inside and then he would go get you. And he did."

"He's amazing," Alec said and sighed. "And I'm glad you like him too. Makes everything so much better." Alec got up from the stool and Robert followed him and pulled him into a hug.

"I'm glad we had this talk," Robert said and tightened his hug and pulled away. "It means a lot to me that you gave me second chance."

"Of course dad," Alec said and smiled up at him. Seriously, what would Alec do without Magnus. He wouldn't even think about it. They heard a soft knock and Alec turned around to see Magnus walk in.

"Sorry If I'm interrupting," he said and looked at Robert. "Max wants to talk to you. He's in his room." Robert nodded slowly and made his way out of the kitchen and up the steps to the rooms. Magnus walked over to Alec and slowly rolled his finger between Alec's.

"How did it go?"

"Better than I expected," Alec said and took a step forward. "It was a nice talk. But I still need to know where his limits are with you and me and other stuff. But we're getting there."

Magnus smiled and leaned down to capture Alec's lips. The kiss was sweet and gentle, with tongue and teeth. Alec pushed himself against his boyfriend's chest and put his hand behind Magnus's neck. It was nice being able to give Magnus a proper kiss without thinking about his father walking in on them.

"Let me show you my old room," Alec whispered against Magnus lips. He smirked and followed behind Alec.

"Wait," Magnus pulled Alec's arm gently and he turned to look at him. "Did you seriously steal gay magazines?"

"I was 18," Alec said. "Give me a break."

Hope you enjoyed and liked the confrontation and the make up! The Robert and Alec catching up is far from done, they just had to get through the "apology" stage.
Hope you all liked it and see you soon!
