Eve heard a slight grumble from the passenger seat. Eve took a deep breath in. Caroline wasn't going to be happy. Eve had made sure Caroline packed her bag before she went to bed. With that, Eve took both her bag and Caroline's to her car, with the help of a tired bellboy. After that, Eve did a once over of the room to check if there was anything that she was going to leave behind. Not seeing anything, she hoisted Caroline up and to her side to make it look like Caroline was a little drunk instead of sleeping. Eve didn't need anyone questioning her while she was trying to leave the state.
"Wha-where am I?" Caroline asked groggily as she stretched and hit her hands on the top of the car. Eve didn't reply, knowing Caroline was about to ask more questions. As if on que, Caroline's eyes opened wide as she turned her head quickly from left to right to see her surroundings. "What the hell is going on Eve?!" Caroline asked quickly as she turned her attention fully on Eve.
"Ya know dat man dat paid fer our meal last night?" Eve asked. Caroline's brows flew together in both confusion and irritation.
"Yeah...why?" Caroline asked slowly.
"He...is not a good person." Eve paused. Though she had been driving for almost four hours, she hadn't actually thought of what to say to Caroline. When she first started driving, Eve assured herself that she could come up with it at the spot. Unfortunately, the spot landed on the 24 hour mark that Eve had been awake. Caroline stared at Eve in the darkness. "I know, he paid fer de meal, but dat was just ta distract ya. He's no good. Scary even." Eve continued. "I've known him fer a long time...if archenemies exist, he's mine." Caroline scoffed. Eve wanted to as well. It sounded stupid.
"Why would you want to come to New York if everyone you hate from your past was going to be there?" Caroline asked. Eve paused for a second. That was the question she asked; not how dumb it sounded to have real life archenemies…
"Ya would dink dat with New York City bein' so big dat ya wouldn't run inta anyone from yer past...but I was wrong." Eve sighed. "He's dangerous and I didn't want him hurtin' ya."
"Listen, I'm too tired to argue right now, so I'm just going to believe you." Caroline muttered as she leaned her seat back. "How far are we away from home?" Caroline grumbled as she tried to make herself comfortable.
"Two hours if I drive de speed limit, one if I push it." Eve smiled down to her. Caroline had already shut her eyes.
"Do whatever, just don't get me killed." Caroline muttered as she put an arm over her eyes. Eve chuckled to herself. That was the whole reason that she had left so early to begin with. Two hours it was.
"I still can't believe you basically kidnapped me from my nice hotel room and no one batted an eye." Caroline muttered as she pulled her bag from the trunk of the car. Eve couldn't help but snicker.
"What can I say? I'm very-"
"Compelling, yeah yeah yeah." Caroline muttered, swatting her free hand at Eve. Eve shut the trunk. "Does my mom know I'm supposed to be back today?" Caroline asked as the two began walking up the sidewalk towards Caroline's home.
"Aye, I text her."
"You texted her?" Caroline asked with her eyebrow raised. "And she answered ?" Caroline asked, with a slightly more disgusted look. Eve couldn't help but laugh.
"Aye, if ya can call it that." Eve sassed as she pulled out her phone and showed Caroline the text.
"'K'." Caroline read before she scoffed. "Ugh, she has no idea! The letter 'k' is like a death sentence! Like, I only ever text that when I'm super pissed!" Caroline exclaimed.
"I dink it will be alright." Eve laughed. Caroline muttered something under her breath as the front door opened. There stood Liz in her normal sheriff's uniform, looking slightly tired, but smiling at her daughter.
"Hi!" Liz smiled as Caroline pushed around her, only for Liz to pull Caroline into a side hug. "I've missed you." Liz smiled as Caroline let out an annoyed 'moooom'. Liz let Caroline walk past her into the house with her bag. "Your homework is on the kitchen table!" Liz called after her. Eve could hear Caroline let out a surprised and annoyed my 'what!'. "Hi Eve." Liz smile now turned towards Eve.
"Hello Liz." Eve smiled back. Liz walked out of the house and closed the door quietly.
"I was going to call last night and ask, but you gave updates regularly." Liz said, her voice becoming slightly hushed. "You said there was a reason you were coming home early...does that involve..." Liz trailed off. Eve knew what was coming next.
"Aye, unfortunately. I found a few dere and some of dem were gettin' too close ta Caroline fer me own comfort." Eve shrugged. It wasn't a lie.
"Did you take care of them?" Liz asked eagerly. Eve shook her head.
"No; not with Caroline bein' around me." Eve said. Once again, not a complete lie. She wasn't about to mention how these vampires were stronger than her, or how she knew they were stronger than her without mentioning the fact that she had met said vampires decades ago. Liz only nodded back.
"Understandable. It's been relatively quiet around here." Liz said.
"Relatively?" Eve questioned back making Liz shake her head and let out an annoyed sigh.
"Johnathan Gilbert still hasn't left town." Liz grumbled making Eve laugh.
"Playin' nice den?" Eve sassed with a raised eyebrow. Liz rolled her eyes.
" I am." Liz sassed back. "He just...ugh." Liz grumbled. "He acts like he owns the place. And he doesn't! He just showed up. I know he knows what's going on in the town, but at the same time-"
"He's becomin' a nuisance?" Eve asked, not being able to help the smile that had slipped from how upset Liz was becoming just by talking about Johnathan.
"He's always been a nuisance." Liz grumbled. "But, I should let you go home! I can't imagine you got much sleep last night seeing that you simply drove back here." Liz said, her whole attitude changing as she smiled. "I think a certain Salvatore missed you." Liz said with a little twinkle in her eye. Eve raised an eyebrow.
"Oh yeah, Stefan has been a mess without me." Eve sassed back with a smile as Liz rolled her eyes.
"I was talking about the other one." Liz snarked.
"Dere's another Salvatore?!" Eve asked with a bewildered look. Liz couldn't help but roll her eyes and smile.
"You're a brat." Liz smiled as she opened the door to her house.
"Ya can't blame me, I just spent almost a week with yer daughter." Eve sassed back as she turned around to leave.
"Hey Caroline, Eve just called you a brat!" Liz called back into the house. Eve could hear Caroline let out an annoyed scoff.
"Tell her that I learn from the best!" Caroline called back. Liz repeated the information back to Eve as Eve chuckled and waved as she got back into her car. Liz closed the door to the house and Eve was finally on her way to the Salvatore house.
Eve tried to calm her beating heart as she drove to the Boarding house. Eve groaned at herself. It was just Damon...who she was in love with. Eve shook her head at the thought. That wouldn't help her frantic heart. Damon was her best friend...who she was in love with. The thought was so foreign to her. Love? She hadn't loved anyone in a long time...or at least, she hadn't been in love for a long time. Sure, she had dated Cory for just shy of a decade. She did love him but she wasn't in love with him. The only person she had ever really been in love with was...Aidan. Eve shook her head. She didn't want to think about him.
It had been just under 50 years of his...passing, but it still hurt. And that was annoying. She had only dated the man for 40 years, and yet, she still missed him. Time passed differently for vampires, Eve had learned very early on, but she never expected to still miss someone for so long. And with the memory of Aidan came the memory of Séamus, which she sure as shit didn't want to think about, especially with the paranoia of Alistair being back...
Eve loved Damon, like a friend for a long time. And as much as she thought about being in love with him, she wasn't sure. Eve had always a little bit of a crush on Damon, but that wasn't anything she bothered to explore. He was her best friend and that was all he needed to be. Sure he was always flirty with her especially, but Eve didn't take it to mean anything, but maybe it had meant something. Eve let out an annoyed sigh as she passed over the Wickery Bridge. To think Damon Salvatore would actually feel the same way for her was ridiculous, especially before the whole Katherine not being in the tomb mess. Back then, she wasn't about to compete for a trapped woman's man, though there had been many times she had wanted to.
Even now as Eve thought about it, her heart finally began to slow. Damon was always going to be in love with Katherine. She was convinced that Katherine had sired her. The thought made Eve snicker, as dark as it sounded in her mind. Katherine had sired Damon and left. Stefan had sired Eve and left. Damon waited over a century to get into the tomb. Eve never waited for Stefan, since she had just met the man when she turned, but she had her proof that she was sired to the younger Salvatore. Damon would never admit to being sired to Katherine.
As Eve pulled into the driveway of the Boarding house, she let a sigh out. Alistair wouldn't dare follow her...and if he did, he did a hell of a good job. Eve had taken a longer way back, watched every car that came within a mile of hers, and made a lot of mini stops. Eve finally felt safe again. She hadn't even realized how unsafe in New York she had felt until just then. Eve stepped out of her car and took in a deep breath. So that was what it was like to breathe. Eve snickered to herself as she walked around to her trunk and pulled out her bag and made her way towards the house. Eve opened the front door and walked in.
"Hello! I'm not here ta kill anyone so don't kill me!" Eve called as she began making her way to the stairs. No one answered. It was almost eight in the morning. Eve had taken longer to get to the Boarding house with having to watch her every move, otherwise she would have gotten back at six in the morning.
"Eve?" Eve heard as she began making her way up the stairs. Eve looked up to see Stefan staring back down at her.
"Hey Stef." Eve smiled back up at him. He looked tired. Then again, he did try to kill himself. Eve continued walking up the stairs.
"How was your trip?" Stefan asked. Small talk. Stefan was about to turn into a sad puppy, Eve knew it. He always started with small talk and then it turned into a guilt fest, which he didn't need right now.
"It was fine. And before ya say anythin' else, I forgive ya fer anythin' ya did while on human blood." Eve said as she reached the top of the stairs. Stefan still gave her his signature sad puppy dog eyes. "If ya truly hurt me, I would let ya know, ya know dis Stef. An eye fer an eye, literally if anythin'." Eve sassed as she put down her bag and hugged the younger Salvatore. As she hugged him, she felt his shoulders slightly relax as he hugged her back.
"You are too nice to me." Stefan muttered as his chin rested on top of Eve's. Eve snickered as she pulled away.
"Someone has ta be." Eve sassed. "Ya look tired. Go back ta bed." Eve scolded as she picked up her bag again.
"Take your own advice." Stefan sassed back gently. Eve rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue back out at Stefan. Stefan smiled back at her before going back to his room. "Damon will be back in an hour or so, he said. Just missed him." Stefan said before he closed the door to his bedroom. Eve glanced back at the door and smiled as she walked to her room. Wasn't that the way of things? Always just missing each other.
Eve rolled over in her bed to look at her alarm clock. Three in the afternoon. Eve sat up and attempted to run her hands through her hair. Surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as she thought it was. She didn't sleep as well as she would have liked. Alistair was still stuck in her mind. He was around and knew she was around. That alone made Eve paranoid. Eve got up and went to her bathroom to take a shower, her mind still focused on him.
Alistair Duquesne. A Scottish man that ruined her life. All because she was a young vampire and killed a bunch of his family and friends because she was drunk. In return, he hunted her family down and killed them. Family for family...the only differences was that after everyone was dead, he still kept tabs on her. Probably because after her nephew died, she began to hunt him and began killing his henchmen. At the end of 1995, the two had huge fight.
Eve remembered the fight clearly. Though Alistair was centuries older than Eve, Eve beat him. Everything that Alistair had done to her family came flooding back to Eve, and with those memories, she felt like she was almost invisible...or that she didn't care if she lived or died in that moment. She would have killed him then if it hadn't been for one of Alistair's henchmen coming back to life after having his neck snapped and distracting Eve while Alistair got away. After that, she didn't see him again for two years.
Eve sighed as she got out of the shower. Eve wasn't sure if she ever told Damon that reason she 'ran off' that night in 1997 was because she had been kidnapped. Maybe she had, but in not so many words. Damon knew who Alistair was anyway. Even now, Eve was annoyed at the whole timing of everything. Meeting up with Damon, kissing him when they were drunk, and then instantly being kidnapped by Alistair's henchmen when she left him to find a restroom. Alistair's henchmen were never that smart, so they never mentioned to Alistair that Damon had been around. It wasn't like Damon ever really searched for her after she 'left' him. Drunk and alone in a park late at night in New York City. Eve never blamed him. He must have been humiliated. There was a reason that the two never really saw each other again until just recently.
After three years of torture, one of Alistair's henchmen began to ask questions. What Eve did to piss off Alistair, and why Eve was being tortured so much? Eve told the man everything from start to finish and something inside of him must have sparked. One night, he came into Eve's cell with a black eye and a key. Eve remembered the man telling her that Alistair was drinking and helped her get out of the cell and dungen type room. Once again, Alistair and Eve got into a fight, and once again, Eve beat him. Eve was luck that Alistair was drunk, otherwise she wouldn't have beat him. After being tortured for three years, it wasn't a surprise that Eve was weak. The henchman that helped her escape wasn't as fortunate as Eve. As Eve was leaving the hellhole, Alistair got up and came after Eve with a stake. The henchman tackled him down and told Eve to run. She knew he wasn't going to live, but if he was going to sacrifice himself for her, she wasn't about to waste it. So, she ran and ran far far away. Across the country far away. Los Angeles. After a year living there, she met Cory, and Alistair was a simple afterthought. Now he was back to being on her mind, like a fungus. If she didn't get him out of her head soon, he was going to take over her every thought. Like he was now.
Eve shook her head as she slipped on a pair of jeans, a bra and a black tshirt. Her hair was drying in a towel as she walked out of her room. The house was quiet. It usually was, but there would be a little noise.
"Hello?" Eve called out as she stood and leaned against the railing. She heard footsteps begin walking towards the living room. "Is anyone goin' ta answer me?" Eve asked aloud again, letting his elbow rest on the rails and her chin rest in her hand.
"I thought everyone was out of the house." Eve's eyebrows furrowed together. "Hello Eve." Johnathan Gilbert. Eve flittered down the stairs and slammed the man against the wall by his throat.
"What are ya doin' here?" Eve snapped as he held the man by his throat. She was too short to get him off the ground, unfortunately.
"Can't a guy welcome a member of a town's secret vampire hunters group back to Mystic Falls?" John sputtered out. Eve continued to glare at him. "I was looking for Damon." John snapped.
"In de house? No knockin', just enterin'?" Eve snapped. John let out an annoyed sigh.
"I was looking for something he has, okay?" John snapped. Eve rolled her eyes and let him go. It wasn't like he was a threat. Like Liz had said, he's a nuisance at most. "His room is probably yours too. Upstairs?" John asked, rubbing his throat. Eve rolled her eyes back at him. "I mean, he gave you a room back in 1915, right?" Eve blinked back at him...how could he… "I've been doing research on you, Eve." John said, a smirk beginning to form on his lips.
"So, ya know dat I got a room at de Boardin' house back in 1915, so what." Eve rolled her eyes and folded her arms. John shrugged, but he still had that smug look on his face.
"And that you disappeared in 1912." John continued. Eve raised an eyebrow. "But in reality, you didn't disappear at all. You turned into a vampire." John continued as he began to pace around. "It was hush hush about your disappearance. There was a lot of talk about whether or not you were alive or a run away. Most of the talk was about if your father killed you." John continued. Eve knew he was looking for a reaction...and she was giving him one; boredom. She was the one who put those words in a newspaper editor's mouth. "Unfortunately, you're not too good at staying gone." John muttered. "Since you were seen in 1960 with Damon back at the Boarding house by an old man. He was in his 20's during Zachariah's funeral in 1912." Eve couldn't help her as he eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "He remembers you because your mother was trying to arrange for the two of you to have a date." Eve felt her breath slightly hitch. Where had he found this information? She had made sure that every bit of information about her existence was in the Mystic Falls' library back in 1919 when she set it on fire. "He was taken back because you looked the same as you had back in 1912, thus meaning you turned either in 1912 or around then." John said as he smirked.
"Okay, fine, ya found me out. I'm a vampire." Eve rolled her eyes. "Need more proof, I can show ya if ya'd like." Eve flittered over to John, veins crawling down her face and her fangs out. Eve rolled her eyes as she shoved John backwards, over the couch, making him fall backwards. "Tell me somethin' I don't know." Eve snapped as Johnathan let out a groan from the floor. Eve flittered over to him again and pulled him off the floor before flittering to the front door. "Now kindly get out." Eve snapped as she opened up the front door and threw him out. John stumbled before he fell into another vampire. Eve felt all of the anger that she had felt disappear as she look up to see Damon.
Damon raised an eyebrow at John as Damon pushed him away from both him and the Boarding house. Damon finally looked to the opened door and felt his heart drop to his stomach before skyrocketing back to his chest. Eve. Eve was back. Being a vampire was a hell of a ride, especially when it came to emotions. Especially when it came to Evie. When had she gotten back? Who cares. He forced himself not to flitter over to her.
"Hi Day." Damon couldn't help the smile as he picked her up into a hug. Her laugh filled his ears and nearly made his heart stop as her arms wrapped around his neck. She pulled herself away to look at him. Damon could hear his heart pounding so loudly in his ears as he looked at her that he almost didn't hear her talk. "I missed ya." Another electric shock to his own heart.
"I miss you too, Evie." Damon smiled, seeing a small twinkle in her eyes. Being so close made his mind race. He needed some space or else he wasn't sure what he was going to do. "So, whatdya get me?" Damon asked as he set Eve back on her feet before nudging her back into the house. Eve scoffed.
"What are ya talkin' about? I am de gift." Eve sassed back up at him as he closed the front door behind them. Damon raised his eyebrow back at her as a smirk fell across his lips.
"Oh, so you're saying you're mine?" Damon asked. Eve paused before staring back up at him. The familiar blush ran across her face. "No taksies backsies, Evie. You said you were the gift you got me from New York. So I can do whatever I want with you." Damon smirked as Eve glared back at him, punching him in the arm.
"Ya know, I take it back, I didn't miss ya at all." Eve muttered as she started walking towards the library. Damon couldn't help but laugh as he grabbed her and pulled her back towards him.
"What did I say about taksies backsies?" Damon sassed down at her. Eve rolled her eyes and looked up at him. Damon almost cursed to himself. He was supposed to be creating space, but all he wanted to do was be close to her.
"Maybe I should just leave again and maybe I wouldn't have ta deal with ya." Eve sassed up to him.
"You would miss me too much." Damon sassed back down to her. A smile began to slip across Eve's lips. Damon felt his heart begin to race again.
"Yer probably right." Eve smiled back up to him. Damon tried to catch his breath as she looked up at him. God, he missed her. Both their attention turned towards the front door opening. Elena walked into the Boarding house, tears running down her face.
"What happened?" Damon asked, his attention now fully on Elena.
Eve took in a deep breath as Elena began to explain what had happened. Something about meeting her vampire birthmother and her mother being a bitch. Eve wasn't listening. She was focusing more on calming her heart down. She couldn't focus on how Damon looked at Elena as she came into the house, as if everything stopped. Eve took in another breath. Damon wasn't hers. He could look at other people...the way he looked at Eve. He could look at Elena the same way he looked at Eve. But why did it...hurt.
Caroline was always joking around about Damon being in love with Eve. From the way he joked with her, to the constant flirting, to the looks he gave her. Eve bit the inside of her cheek as Eve walked around Eve, without saying a word and walking up the stairs. Eve glanced around to watch her before he looked back towards Damon. Damon's eyes lingered on Elena before he looked back down at Eve. And Eve nearly collapsed from the sheer number of emotions she was feeling.
"I'm goin' ta grab a drink." Eve said aloud as she glanced back to the stairs.
"Yeah, okay, I'll be with you in a bit." Damon said through his teeth. Eve paused as she looked back at him. His hands were in fists as he was looking towards the stairs. Eve suddenly knew what she was feeling. Jealousy. The feeling made her want to throw up. "I've got something to do real quick." Damon muttered, sending a small smile back towards Eve. Eve nodded back as she simply began walking towards the library. She heard the front door open and close. The quiet conversation of Stefan and Elena. Something about Stefan having his earbuds in...crying. Eve shook her head.
As Eve entered the library, she let out an annoyed sigh. She couldn't be jealous. Elena looks exactly like Katherine. Eve rolled her eyes at herself as she found a bottle of jameson and opened it. Did you really think he would be over Katherine? Eve looked for a glass to pour herself a drink. Did you really think that he would actually like you as more than a friend? Where were the damn glasses. Damon always had one when she saw him drinking in here, so where did he put them? He will never love you. It's always going to be Katherine. Eve felt her chest begin to hurt as she opened the jameson and took a long drink.
