Chapter 25:
Ice Box.
Adveana had her hair in a high pony tail as she ran around her room in a towel, water dripping from her body. "Adveana make sure you have everything! And make sure Stiles eats something!" There was a farewell knock on her door as she heard her adoptive father leave.
Just as she removed her towel, her door came wide open. "STILES!" She hovered her towel in place as he stood there. "Whoa Ana, I'm sorry." The door slammed and she stood there, trying to calm down. "Go get breakfast or something, geez." Stiles made his way down to the kitchen while Adveana quickly got dressed and finished her morning routine.
Racing down the stairs, Stiles watched as Adveana seemed too into herself to notice him. She walked into the kitchen and sighed loudly enough for him to hear and follow her in. "Are you sure you want to ride with us out there?" Her black eyes took a moment to focus on him before nodding. "Yeah, I think.. Since I wasn't allowed last night.. I should.."
Stiles placed his hand on her shoulder and watched as she closed her eyes. "Hey, look at me. What happened last night… There's no way they would've risked losing you too." She shook her head and pulled away. "They keep reminding me that I'm weak. That I can't go out, and fight with them. I'm not weak Stiles! I could've.. I could've helped.."
He quickly pulled her in and sighed as she let out a sob. "You know that we all know how capable you are. But.. Ana, .. You could've distracted them.. And.." She nodded into his shoulder and he held her tighter. "Come on. We have to get going. This isn't going to report itself, and we're not going to win that stupid race."
She let out a pained giggle and followed him out of the house and to his jeep. The ride to school was silent as Stiles drove. He reached over and took Adveana's hand without having her protest. She squeezed it tightly as they sat there. The loss was hanging so thick in the air that it suffocated them.
Once at the school, Stiles let her go and watched as Isaac was at her side in an instant. "Vee." She looked at him with a smile and leaned into him as she took his hand. "Zicks, can we just.. go?" He nodded and held her things for her as they walked to the bus.
Coach looked at them both and glanced at his clipboard. "Ms. Stilinski.." Adveana rolled her eyes and sighed. "I live with them. I wasn't adopted. My last name is Mionette." The others around her laughed and she felt her face get a little hot. "I mean, they're family.. I'm just not lucky enough to have the name." He scoffed and glanced at Stiles. "Lucky…? Riiight.."
He wagged his pen between the couple and they let each other go. "You're not to be in the same seat as that kid. I don't want any funny business on this bus." Adveana squinted her eyes and tilted her head to the side. "No jokes? Why not?" Isaac couldn't help but chuckle at her as the coach gave her a stern look. "Why can't I sit with him? What could we possibly do on a bus FULL of people AND chaperones?"
After a few moments of silence, he nodded and sighed in defeat. "Ok FINE. But if anything fishy goes on between you two, I'm putting you up front with me. Got it?" She nodded and took her boyfriends hand with a triumphant smile. Isaac smiled back at her, running his free hand down the side of her face. "God you're persistent."
When the cross country team and parental units boarded the bus, Adveana split away as Isaac and Boyd sat together. She took her seat behind him, keeping it to herself as her two friends sat behind her. Stiles leaned forward and smiled at her. "Lover boy not someone you're interested in anymore?"
Isaac turned around and his eyes flashed as he gave him a glare. "I can either sit with Boyd and hold him back from killing everyone while she's in the middle to protect your sorry ass. Or I can leave everyone on this bus unprotected." Adveana placed her hand on top of Stiles' head and narrowed her eyes playfully. "We talked about this. We do what's best from now on. And besides, he'll sit with me when we know it's safe."
She let him go and looked down at the note pad in her lap. "So do what you do best, and take care of Scott. " Stiles sighed and leaned back in his seat. "How ya holding up buddy?" Adveana didn't want to hear what they were saying. Instead she turned the page in her note pad and leaned back.
"I don't want it to be this way. I don't want to know that I could lose you too." Isaac tilted his head towards her and smiled to himself. "I don't want lose you either." Adveana looked up for only a moment and gave him a small smile.
The ride was silent between the group. Adveana was stuck in her little bubble as Stiles had trouble trying to understand why Scott couldn't heal. She didn't notice that the boys were acting funny. Or the fact that she felt a little funny. Something was off, and she was oblivious to what it could be.
The traffic was unbearable. She was becoming bored with it. She had her head leaned against the window as she began to day dream. Isaac could hear the steady beating of her heart and sighed softly. As much as he wanted to be in the same seat as her, he knew he couldn't.
Within a few moments, Stiles shook Adveana roughly. "Hey, snap out of it!" The back of the bus lifted into the air and slammed back down. She jumped from her thoughts and looked back at him. Stiles could see that she was scared. "What happened?"
He spoke softly and Isaac turned to them both. "You started levitating things. I thought you had that under control?" Stiles searched her eyes as she cast them downward. "I wasn't paying attention again. Something's wrong. I can feel it."
She turned away from them both and scrunched her face up in confusion. She had been working really hard to control herself. Why are her powers flaring up now?
The bus pulled over at a rest stop and almost immediately she watched as Stiles and Alison took Scott away. Adveana stood in the sun and brought her face up to the cool breeze. "Are you ok?" She felt as Isaac's arms wrapped around her body and held her close.
She nodded and melted into his warmth. "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just, I feel, a little, a little out of it." She pulled away and smiled up at him, pulling him down to place a kiss on the end of his nose. "I know what you mean. Something doesn't feel right. Like something is messing with us on this trip."
Adveana agreed and he rubbed the sides of her arms. "It's the Darach." A chill swept over them as they stared at each other. Besides the alpha's, another wanted to pick them off one by one. Adveana turned her head to hide the fear in her eyes as Isaac took her hand.
"We'll be ok. Derek wouldn't .. He didn't.. " He stopped when he heard her heart skip a beat. "He'd be alive if he would've just let me help. I could've protected him. I don't understand.." She stopped when her voice caught in her throat.
"We're not going over this right now ok? We'll wait until we're in a room or something." Isaac squeezed her hand and started climbing the stairs of the bus as everyone started to get back on. He sat with her in a seat and pulled her into his chest. "Try to get some sleep."
The coach looked at the both of them and Isaac held his hands up. "She's taking a nap. I'm not doing anything!" Adveana fought the urge to throw the coach into the side of the bus as he pried Isaac away from her. "You said no funny business. Is taking a nap something funny?"
She was irritated and the coach felt as the whistle chain tightened slightly around his neck. The coach looked at her closely and she cast her eyes away. "I just want to sleep. What can happen if I'm dead to the world?"
Isaac and Stiles both laughed. "She does slip into a coma when she sleeps. I'm sure nothing is going to happen coach." Stiles pointed to them both and he let Isaac go. "I'm watching you two." Isaac took his spot with Adveana and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Sleep."
The ride to the hotel went by faster while Adveana slept. She ended up in a room with Alison and Lydia, which upset her even more. "I am an only child, and I don't share. You guys are best friends. You share the bed."
Adveana threw her stuff on one of the free beds and sat down, glaring at the two. They could see that something was wrong with her. Her eyes flashed at them and everything started to hover in the room. "Alison, is she ok?"
Alison shook her head and began to call Stiles. "No, I think there's something going on right now, and we need to fix it. It could explain why Scott can't heal." Stiles answered, but he seemed busy. Before long, Adveana was throwing things their way.
Alison and Lydia left the room without another word and looked at each other. "There is definitely something wrong here. Let's go find Stiles." They immediately went looking for him. Adveana, on the other hand, sighed and looked around her. "Well this is no fun." A grin spread across her face as she got to her feet. "Time to shake things up a bit." Without waiting, she walked out of the door and into the darkness.

Lydia and Alison found Stiles. He seemed to be looking for Scott. "Hey, we kind of need your help." He looked at them curiously and then glanced behind them. "Where's Adveana?" Alison clapped her hands together with a shaky smile. "That's what we need help with. She's acting funny. Like, like something is wrong with her."
Lydia gave them a bewildered look. "She flung things at us! With her, power thingy." Stiles looked to Alison for confirmation and saw as she gave a slight nod. "She's been a little cold towards us for a while now. Since, we got on t the bus."
Stiles walked back to their room and found Adveana missing. "And now she's gone. Scott has been acting funny. We should find Isaac. Maybe he can help control her." They turned and made their way to Boyd and Issac's room.
When they found Boyd trying to down himself, they knew for a fact that something was definitely off. They found Isaac under the bed trying to escape some past reality. But when they got them out of it, Isaac looked around. "Where's Adveana? Why isn't she with you?"
Stiles looked at him and hit his shoulder. "Well no shit Sherlock. Go find her! Whatever is affecting you guys is affecting her too." Without hesitation, Isaac took off to find her. He caught her scent in the edge what felt like nowhere.
He didn't take long to find her. When he did, the blood left his face. She was half buried in the dirt, and she didn't look like she was breathing. Running to her side, he began to dig her up. As soon as his hands touched the dirt, her eyes snapped open.
They were a deep purple as she looked at him. "Came to finish the job? To get rid of the girl that burdened you?!" Isaac felt pressure around his neck as she rose from the ground, lifting him off of his own feet. "V..Vee.. it's me Isaac. Ppput me down." He was struggling to breathe and he knew the longer she was in her trance, the harder it was going to be for him to get free.
"VEE!" She threw him back against a tree and he felt the sharp pain shoot up his back. "I didn't die. I can't die. I REFUSE to die." Adveana had tears spilling from her eyes as she spoke. "I don't understand why you kept me. Why didn't you just kill me that day? The day you killed my mother!" The pressure around his neck became tighter and it cut off his air supply. "I trusted you Dad."
Before he was about to black out, Isaac heard the sound of footsteps. They rushed towards him. There was a loud smacking sound and Isaac fell to the ground. Gasping for air, he saw Alison standing over Adveana. Her eyes wide, and worried. "That's not your father. Snap out of it!"
Alison walked over to Isaac to see if he was ok. But he saw as Adveana watched them both, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. Stiles helped her to her feet and moved the hair from her face. "It's the Darach. I think it's controlling you. We need to find Scott."
They all nodded wordlessly, and began walking back towards the motel. Stiles kept his arm around Adveana, and Alison stayed close to Isaac. "Hey, Adveana, you weren't in control. Whoever the darach is, they're controlling you. Don't freak out ok? It's not your fault."
Isaac watched as Adveana nodded shakily at Stiles and as his arm wrapped around her shoulders. "It's ok. It's ok." Adveana spoke softly as she kept her eyes focused on the ground. "Something is wrong. I can feel it. It's not just the Darach. There's something else." She spaced out for a moment before snapping her head upward. "SCOTT."
She took off running and the others took off behind her. Isaac tried to keep up with her, but she seemed to be using her powers to make herself faster. "GAS! I SMELL GASOLINE!" They ran to the parking lot and found Scott drenched in gas.
Isaac held Adveana back as the others ran up to Scott. "Let me go Isaac, I have to go help them!" He wrapped his arms around her tighter as he spoke softly in her ear. "I can't risk you getting hurt too. Ok? Let them solve this."
She broke free and ran up to the group. Scott was distressed. Stiles was on the verge of tears and Adveana was already crying. "Scott, you're my brother." Stiles took a step towards Scott and Adveana stepped in too. "Scott, we've been best friends for as long as I can remember. Don't ever think you're going to go out alone!"
She wrapped her arms around his gas soaked body and Stiles looked at them. "No matter what, we can get through this. You've always told me that. The day my parents.. those killers.. You're one of my many rocks. I'm not letting you go."
Stiles grabbed the flare from Scott's hand and before they knew it, they were on the ground as the flames danced behind them. Adveana was crying as she beat Scott's chest. "I hate you sometimes Scott. You can't carry the world on your shoulders alone. It's not always, your fault."
Isaac pulled them up and saw the fear in Adveana's eyes as she looked behind them. The Darach was engulfed in the flames. Mouthing some unknown language to them. Her eyes went blank and she spoke softly. "You can't stop me. I will get what I want."
She blinked a few times and looked at them. They all looked scared, worried and ready to fight. Wordlessly, Adveana pulled away from Isaac and looked around her. "I'm going to shower. I smell.. like.. like gas.." Alison and Lydia followed behind her.
Isaac and the guys did the same before meeting on the bus. Stiles looked at them and spoke quietly. "If it's targeting you, and it knows it's not strong enough, it's going to try to get Adveana. She's using her to get to you." They all looked at Scott and Isaac held his hands in fists. "Why use her? Why not Alison? Isn't she your main focus?"
Scott shook his head and leaned against the window. Stiles kept talking to break the silence that started to grow between them. "She's got power. Who wouldn't want that? The things she can do, when she has control, is amazing." Stiles looked at Isaac and grit his teeth. "Which is why we need to protect her. No matter what."

The next morning, Adveana made her way onto the bus, bag in hand. She sat next to Isaac and rested her head on his shoulder. "I didn't sleep last night, did you?" He shook his head and placed a kiss on the top of hers. "Not a wink." He wrapped his fingers around hers and sighed softly.
"It wants my power, doesn't it?" Isaac couldn't keep the truth from her as he squeezed her hand, letting her know she was right. "Whatever it's doing, we're going to stop it. Nothing is going to get to you, or hurt you in any way. We agreed on that last night."
They both watched as Lydia found the wolfsbane in the whistle and glanced at each other nervously. It was getting to them in small ways. Making them lose their minds, little by little. Their control wavering, before they slip, and show who they really are.
Adveana looked at Isaac and he no longer saw the warmth in her eyes. She was cold, and it scared him. The night before was just a test. To show them all what they were dealing with. He saw it. He felt it. In her trance, she could've easily killed him, but didn't.
"Isaac?" He snapped out of his thoughts and saw that she gave him a slight frown. "I'm… I'm sorry about.." She stopped when he leaned in to kiss her. "That wasn't you. It will never be you. It was the Darach. It's ok."Adveana shook her head and looked into his eyes. "It's not ok. I have to learn to fight it." He moved the hair from her face and saw that she was determined. "We will. Together." .. ….
