Author Note: NO another short one. Ugh I hate when my chapters are short. Oh well I know there are long ones in the future.

I have no idea what to call this chapter so I went along with what I have now if anyone one of you thinks of something better please tell me so that I can change it.

Chapter 23: Helpless

Gluttony once again attacked Scar snapping both Scar and Edward out of their thoughts. Edward shook his head, stopping himself from attacking Father in a blind rage. Once he had composed himself he looked back up and saw Ling…no Greed escaping. Refusing to give up on Ling, Edward ran after him. May stood there staring after them with wide eyes focused solely on Greed who she recognized as Ling Yao. She stood there wondering what he was doing there then she turned when she heard an explosion nearby; Scar was attacking the lair for some reason. A similar but different energy to that of the homunculi was pricking at her senses almost coaxing her to look in its direction, which she did. She stared at the strange man that was almost completely covered in black. Tilting her head to the side she focused her senses on him. She gasped when she got a clear sense of the strange energy the man was emitting. Hearing the gasp, Sam looked away from where Edward had run to where May was standing. Seeing the surprise and slight fear in the girl's eyes, Sam realized that she understood that he wasn't exactly human though, thankfully, she didn't know why. Slowly, and a bit unsteadily, Sam raised a hand up to his face and brought his pointer finger in front of his lips. He quietly shushed her and she blinked realizing that he didn't want her to tell anyone what she had sensed.

May gasped when a shadow fell over her. She turned around and saw Gluttony right behind her lunging her way. She jumped back to avoid him. She kept jumping back as he advanced remaining just out of his reach. However, she looked towards Scar when he was injured by Father, which gave Gluttony the chance to injure her. May cried out and fell to her knees as her shoulder was slashed. Gluttony went for her again but missed as Alphonse dove in and grabbed May, carrying her out of the way. Alphonse picked the girl up bridal style and fled the chamber with Gluttony right behind him. Alphonse managed to get far ahead of him but was stopped by a swarm of chimera. Suddenly Scar was there to help them. Back in the chamber Father stared towards the doors where Scar had fled with indifferent eyes. He then turned to Envy.

"Go after them." He said. Envy looked at him a moment then left without saying a word. Father stared after him before remembering that there was another person he needed to deal with. Father turned back to where Sam was then cursed when he saw that he was no longer there. Not too long later Envy returned with the two brothers and Gluttony. "Where's Scar?" Father asked Envy.

"He got away." Envy informed him.

"The other one also got away." Father said gesturing to where Sam had been. Edward let out a sigh of relief at that; he had been worried about him as he had seemed so vulnerable and he just ran off, leaving Sam behind in such a state. Father looked back at the two brothers as he contemplated what to do with them now. "Take them to Wrath." He said before turning and walking to a strange chair with a bunch of pipes attached to it. He sat down acting as if they were no longer there. Envy dragged the two away unaware that they were being watched.

"I'm sorry Edward…I can't help you this time." Sarah said as she started to stumble away inside the walls of the chamber, leaning against them every now and then to regain her breath. There really isn't anything she could do for him now; that damn transmutation sucked almost all of her energy. He'll be fine. Sarah tried to reassure herself but it didn't help. She cursed as she fell against the wall again, hating how helpless she was at the moment. She promised herself that as soon as her energy was replenished she would check on Edward and help him if he was in trouble.

Author Note: Helpless refers to the brothers not being able to escape and Sam for not being able to help.

I think I should tell you that in the future there is going to be a song in one chapter. A song that I think fits Sarah very well in that part of the story. I hope that you are all okay with this.
