Author's Notes: Yay! An update! Sorry for the delay. Being busy and not being inspired makes for slow updates. For awhile, when I tried to work on this, I just wasn't getting anywhere. So it helped to work on some other stories. Italicized text indicates thoughts, memories; ~ "text" ~ indicates telepathy.

The old Ultra building may have become the new home for The Tomorrow People, but, for John, the Lair would always be his refuge. Even after everything that had happened, he still considered the Lair his place. He had built it up, with some help, to be what was needed - a safe place for him and The Tomorrow People.

Shortly after fleeing Ultra, he found his way back to the Lair. Roger had brought him here a couple of times when he was little. Roger told him this was their secret Lair.

"Like the Bat Cave?" The boy asked, looking up to his friend and new mentor.

"Yes, just like that," Roger replied with a chuckle, "but I prefer Lair."

John hadn't thought about that in a long time. He quickly swiped his eyes with the back of his hand. Another lost moment in time remembered. He had been robbed of so much over the years - his family, friends, memories and, most of all, himself. Almost all of that because of Jedikiah.

At least now, he could reclaim the Lair. The Tomorrow People didn't need it anymore. He needed it. He had no where else to go. Here, in the Lair, he found his home.

After Charlotte's plea for her to help John, Cara couldn't sleep. She really did want to support him, but if he wasn't ready to talk, there was nothing she could do to change that. John could be very stubborn.

Cara decided to give it one more try. This latest development of him not being able to enter the Refuge worried her. Would he ever come back?

She didn't really want to think about that. He had been making progress, becoming more involved with the new people and Stephen had just asked him to start training the newbies. And now John wouldn't even enter the building.

Cara rolled over and thought about what had happened. "Ultra" and "Jedikiah" were the two things she had picked up from John as he rushed away from the building. All of a sudden, it wasn't the Refuge, in which he had found a home, but it was Ultra again.

Even in death, Jedikiah continued to ruin John's life. She was never a fan of the man, but that realization just deepened her hate for him.

She needed to do something ... if it wasn't too late. She jumped out of bed and quickly got dressed.

"Where would John go?" She wondered.

Cara attempted to find him telepathically. Not finding him, it occurred to her that if he were underground, she wouldn't be able to sense him.

"Underground ... The Lair."

Cara teleported away.

Cara arrived at the Lair and called for John.

"Cara, what are you doing here?"

"Looking for you," she replied. "Charlotte was concerned and, frankly, so am I."

"I'm fine ... I'll be fine."

"Sorry, not buying it this time. John, you can't even step foot into the Refuge. What's going on?"

John avoided looking at Cara and walked to the other side of the room. Cara followed him.

"John, please, what's wrong?"

"Ever since meeting with Morgan ... I'm ... I ... it shook me up."

"Why?"

"I'm not sure. I was trying so hard to just get on with my life, now that things have gotten back to normal ... well, as normal as they can be for us."

Cara grinned at the reminder of a conversation long ago, but quickly returned her focus to John.

"I ... I just don't know."

"Was it something she did ... or said?"

"Morgan didn't do anything," John paused, he didn't want to say it. "It may have been something she said. I don't know."

John continued to struggle with his thoughts. It was bad enough just thinking it, saying it would be too much.

"John, I can help. Let me try."

John looked at Cara and debated it. "Once this legal issue is settled, everything should go back to normal."

"I hope," John thought then continued to say, "Let me get that worked out first."

Cara closed the distance between them and put a hand on his shoulder. "Okay. I hope you are able to resolve this soon and come back to us again. We need you."

This time she could feel him avoiding something and hoped he figured it out soon. In the meantime, Cara decided to pay a visit to Morgan.

Working out of the Lair, John arranged the meeting with the law firm, Morgan and himself. Unfortunately they didn't have an immediate opening as they did last time. They would have to wait until Friday afternoon, which was just at the deadline for finding the other benefactor.

Cara arrived at Morgan's door, knocked and then sent:

~ "Morgan, it's Cara. I need to talk to you." ~

Cara heard footsteps then the sound of locks being released.

"And to what do I owe this pleasure?" Morgan said as she pulled the door open.

"Just needed to chat ... about John."

"Is he alright?"

"Well, since he met with the lawyers, he's been anxious and then it intensified after his meeting with you. So, no, he's not."

Morgan frowned, then motioned for Cara to come in.

Cara stepped through the entrance and Morgan quickly closed and locked the door. They sat down in the living room, Cara on the couch and Morgan in the chair across from her.

"So, what's going on with John?"

"I don't really know, but since he talked with you, he hasn't been able to step foot in the Refuge. I was hoping you could shed some light on it."

"We mainly just discussed the issue with Jedikiah's will," Morgan replied then thought back to their meeting. "Hmmm ... he did seem quite on edge about the whole thing."

"How so?"

"John was very insistent that I had to take the whole thing. He wanted nothing to do with it and got upset when I just suggested him keeping some of it. He deserves it after what Jedikiah put him through."

"Was there anything else? Something else you said to him? When I talked to him yesterday, I sensed there's more to it than just the inheritance."

Morgan took some time to remember John's visit and then it came to her.

"I told him that Jedikiah loved him as much as if he was his own son."

"Why would you tell him that?"

"Because it's the truth and he needed to know it. Nobody knew Jedikiah as well as I did. Even with me, though, he didn't reveal everything, but one thing is clear: John was his son. Maybe not biologically, but he was as good as in his mind. He felt that way almost since the day he rescued John from the foster system."

What Morgan told Cara wasn't anything she hadn't already known. She had felt it herself when she had tried to read the man's mind, but why was John reacting this way? Surely, he already knew this.

"Thank you, Morgan."

Cara now had a good idea of what John's issue was, but had a new problem. She now knew that she would not be able to help him with it. He would have to get there on his own.
