Chapter 24
When he finally came out of his stupor, Sonny moved and ran to follow Will but the latter was already too far. As Sonny reached the police station's entrance, he saw Will climbing in his car and drive away.
"Oh god what have I done?" He whispered with a broken voice. He went back into the station and asked for a pen and a piece of paper. He took the items from the officer and went to sit down.
"Mason, it's officially and definitely over. Just to let you know, I'll do anything to take you down for the horrible things you've done. Goodbye. Sonny." He sighed and folded the paper before going back to the officer.
"Could you give this paper to Mr. Mason Samuels please?" The officer nodded and Sonny slightly smiled. "Thank you."
He went back outside and ran toward the Town Square where he hoped he could find Will. "I have a lot of explaining to do…"
When he reached the benches, he scanned the surroundings but didn't find him. He went to the Brady Pub and looked through the window. He spotted a familiar face and decided to go in. Arianna's back was facing him and next to her was a suitcase. Sonny immediately began thinking about the worse scenarios like Will decided to leave town. Maybe he didn't want to see Sonny anymore and he decided to go back to his past life, disappear and never look back. "No, no, no..." Sonny began panicking. "Our story can't end like this, our love can't end…" He rushed to Arianna.
"Arianna?" She turned to him and smiled. "Okay she doesn't know anything or she wouldn't be smiling to me…"
"Hey Sonny. What's up?"
"You're leaving Salem?"
"Well I have to go back to New York with Parker. My life is over there. But don't worry, I'll be back for you and Dad's wedding…" She stopped and noticed the change on Sonny's face. "Okay you positively flinched when I mentioned the wedding. What happened? Are you having second thoughts?"
"Well not me but I do think your dad doesn't want to marry me anymore…"
"What? No! My dad was on cloud nine this morning when you announced your engagement. Even your mom didn't manage to bring his mood down. I don't think he would change his mind."
"I messed up Arianna. I really fucked up big time and I don't know if that's fixable."
"Wow, it seems really serious… What did you do?" She asked anxious.
"I can't go into details right now. I just have to find him. Did he plan to go with you? Or did you see him since this morning?"
"He was supposed to meet me here before I had to go but he called me to tell me he couldn't. Please Sonny tell me you two are not over!"
"I want to tell you that we are going to be fine more than anything but unfortunately I can't."
"Then what are you waiting for? Go and find him! And please call me when it's fixed…"
"I will and Arianna, I just want to tell you that I love your dad with all my heart…"
"I'm not the person you have to tell this. My dad is. Go!" She pointed to the exit door.
"Thank you!"
Sonny quickly took her in his arms before bouncing out the door.
"Maybe he went to my place since he has the keys…" He ran to his apartment but got no luck as it was empty. "Come on Will! Where did you go?" He bumped his head with his hand. "Of course! Sami and EJ's mansion…" He ran out and soon found himself in front of the big door. He took a deep breath and knocked. He anxiously waited for the door to open thinking about what he was going to tell Will to make everything right.
"Sonny?" He was welcomed by EJ. "What can I do for you?" As Sonny was about to answer, he heard a woman's voice from inside.
"Sonny? Sonny is here?"
"Yes sweetheart. He's at the door."
"Make him come in! I have to talk to him!"
"Well Sonny, you heard the lady. Samantha is waiting for you in the living room."
"Thank you EJ." He said as the tall man excused himself. Sonny stepped forward and entered the huge living room, hoping Will was there with Sami.
"Sonny!" She greeted him, alone. "What's going on with my son?"
Sonny instantly gasped. "At least, she goes directly to her point!" Sonny thought. "I screwed up big time and I'm so sorry…"
"I wouldn't call it screw it up but I guess you understand that I can't back you up in this situation."
"You can't… Back me?" He asked, confused about what was going on. Of course she wouldn't be on his side, Sonny knew that.
"Well yeah. I can't agree with you on this point…"
"This point? I'm sorry Sami I don't understand. You should be mad at me and yelling at me."
"What? Why is that? It's not like it's a major deal, I'm just a little… disappointed. That's all."
"Not a major deal? A little disappointed? I don't get it!"
"Well, you – you can't help Will because of your club and I understand. But it's your wedding too so I thought you wanted to participate to the organization."
"What…" He tentatively said but was immediately cut off by Sami.
"I gave Will the address of a great wedding planner in Chicago. He told me he was going to check it out and that he was leaving today."
"He said he was leaving? Today?" Sonny panicked. If Will left Salem today, what was the probability of him coming back? "Sami please tell me he's still there!"
"Hum… I don't know. I think he's still upstairs." Seeing that Sonny was rushing to the stairs, she asked. "Sonny everything okay? You know communication is really important in a couple and you don't seem to know a lot about Will's mind…"
"Well I hope to change that. Excuse me!"
"Go! My future son in law" She smiled.
"If she only knew…" Sonny thought while he ran the stairs. He checked every room but Will was nowhere to be found. He came into the room which was supposed to be Will's but once again, it was empty. He sat on the bed and put his head in his hands. Hi lost Will once and now he was losing him again because of his own stupidity.
"What are you going here?" Sonny looked up and his eyes crossed Will's. He was standing at the bathroom's door. His eyes were puffy red and he was livid. Sonny felt awfully sick for being the reason of this change and he stood up. He then noticed that Will was carrying a bag.
"So I guess you're really leaving?"
"Yes I am. Not that this is any of your business…"
"Will, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry…." Sonny pleaded.
"It doesn't matter anymore!" Will was trying to be firm but Sonny could hear the trembling in his voice. "I think this is yours." Will said taking his ring off his finger. He gave it to Sonny who began nervously rolling it between his fingers. "Now you'll be able to give it back to Mason… You can go back to your love after all."
"Will, please let me explain…"
"Explain what Sonny? What is there to explain?" His voice was totally shaking and tears were threatening to flow. But Will was decided not to let them. He wanted to be strong.
"Will, I love you!" He said stepping toward Will who took a step back from him.
"Really? You love me?"
"Yes Will I do."
"But you love him more don't you?"
"Wha-?"
"You have stronger feeling for him. What was I to you? A rebound? Someone to replace your husband?"
"You are being unfair Will. Mason was my husband for 10 whole years. You can't expect me to erase my feelings in one day. I know he did something horrible to you…"
"So you decided to pity me?" He blurted out, anger clearly showing on his face. "You decided to dump him for what? For making me feel better? You thought you were doing some charity? Oh the poor little Will is still single and hung up on his ex in his early forties so why don't I help him by hooking up with him before going back to my precious hubby?!" Will spitted out, practically yelling.
"Is this really what you think of me, Will?" Sonny asked in shock. "You really think would be as cruel as doing that to you?"
"I don't know what to think Sonny. The one thing I know for sure is that you're still in love with him and don't try to deny it because I heard everything."
"I'm not denying it. I said I MAYBE loved him. But again we shared 10 years of our life… You can't ask me to forget those past 20 years when you were gone. I had to live without you, I had to move on from you. I suffered because I didn't know where you were."
"Then why did you ask me to marry you?" Will was much calmer now but was still not decided to let Sonny approach him.
"Because as much as I wanted it to be real, my relationship for 10 years has never been as powerful as the one you and I had. I always thought you were my one and only Will and I still do."
"Why didn't you tell me that? Why did you hide from me the fact that you were thinking about adopting with him?"
"I married the guy and I wanted with him the family I never got with you. But now that you came back, we can finally have it. I love you Will, I never stopped loving you and I'll never do. So please, stay with me." He presented him the ring again. "Please…"
He didn't take the ring but stayed still, before Sonny. "I love you too Sonny but… But love isn't always enough. I know you love me but since I heard Mason, I can't help thinking about what my mom said this morning. In twenty years, we both changed Sonny. We separately grew up as adults and…"
"And you don't know if we are still made for each other." Sonny finished his sentence and looked down breaking their eyes' contact.
"I just … I just want us to be completely ready when we… if we go through that commitment. I don't want you or me to regret us being married later. I care too much about you for that." He took the ring box which was on the table and gave him to Sonny for him to put the ring inside. But he didn't move. "Sonny, I just need some time to think. I'm going to Chicago for a week and I'll be back for the trial." He stepped toward Sonny and put his hand under the man's chin to make him look up. But Sonny refused to look at him. "Sonny, please look at me." When he finally did, Will cupped his face in his hands and wiped the tears flowing from Sonny's eyes with his thumbs. He then pressed a soft kiss to Sonny's lips and laid his forehead against Sonny's. "But please Sonny, don't ever forget that I love you with all my heart and this, it's not a break up. I wouldn't be able to support it…"
When he felt Sonny slightly nod, Will kissed him on the forehead. He grabbed his bag and went past Sonny leaving him alone in the bedroom. The silence reined in the room until a low whisper was heard.
"Really Will this is not a break-up? Then why does it feel like it?"
To be continued…
