Epilogue
Sam sat cross-legged on her bed in silence, staring at a picture that was on her bed only a few inches in front of her. It was one of the pictures that her mom had on her fridge from when Sam was just a baby. In the picture, Jeremy was holding Sam who was just a few months old. Sam almost couldn't believe that he was capable of taking care of something so fragile without breaking it. Well, in a sense, he did break her. He broke her a lot, yet she was still raised right with what she believed to be good morals to stand by. When she thought about it, maybe her dad didn't have a part in that. Maybe it was what she experienced and what she went through that defined who she was as a person and what she believed in. Her father did teach her right from wrong, though. Always telling the truth no matter what the consequence: right. Abusing your child as a form of discipline: absolutely wrong. She knew she would never be able to do that to her own child, but how could he?
There was a knock at the door before Pam peeked her head in.
"Are you alone?" She asked.
"Yes," Sam replied.
"Are you sure Danny's not invisible in this room somewhere?" She asked with an eyebrow raised as she walked into the room and closed the door behind her. Sam rolled her eyes, yet chuckled.
"He's not here, Mom." Pam has been suspicious of Danny using his powers to see Sam more secretively ever since he saved Sam from Jeremy and figured out who he was. Considering Danny actually did this pretty often, Sam understood. Sam was actually surprised how well Pam handled knowing who Danny was. It was comforting knowing that Pam also thought Danny was a good guy. Pam sat down next to Sam on her bed, spotting the picture.
"It's been two months, Sam. Is it still effecting you?" She asked. Sam sighed.
"I'm not sure." She picked up the picture and held it out in front of them. "It's weird that this is the closest I'll ever get to him now."
"Is that bad?"
"It's comforting." Pam placed a hand on her back to comfort her.
"He can't hurt you anymore." She said. Sam gave her a small smile.
"I know." Pam patted her back and stood up.
"I made muffins if you want some." She said as she left her room. Sam chuckled before looking back at the picture. She's been telling everyone about the bad times, but there were good times, too. She remembered the time they had gone to see the Grand Canyon when Jeremy had gone on a business trip to Arizona and brought Sam along when she was thirteen.
"For some reason, I didn't think it would be this big," Sam said as she stared off at the canyon. She was so distracted by all the colors before her. There were mixes of orange and brown and red, and the blue sky above it made it stand out even more.
"Maybe it's not that big and you're just tiny," Jeremy replied. Even when he was joking he sounded mean, but Sam knew him well enough to know when he was joking and when he really was trying to be mean.
"Big or tiny, it's still beautiful." She leaned on the railing that prevented them from falling off the canyon, trying to look down at the bottom of the trench.
"Stop that. Unless you want to end up as one of the fossils down there." You'd probably like that, Sam thought to herself. She ignored him and tried to angle herself more so she could see clearer, but Jeremy took her arm and pulled her away. "I told you to stop." He said sternly.
"Oh. I thought it was one of those sarcastic replies, like, 'No, don't lean over even further on the railing. God forbid you fall.'" She mocked in a sarcastic tone. Jeremy snarled at her and gave her a whack on the head. Sam gave him a look as she rubbed her head.
"Don't act like that. You think I want to see my own daughter die?" He said.
"Don't you?" Jeremy clenched his teeth.
"No." He sighed and put an arm around Sam's shoulders, guiding her away from the edge of the canyon. "I'm tough on you; we both know that. I don't do it for the purpose of seeing you hurt. I just need your respect and a way of discipline." Sam rolled her eyes.
"I know."
"I love you, Sam." She sighed.
"I love you too, Dad."
"Good. Now jump off the edge of the canyon." He joked. She chuckled and pushed him away.
"You first."
There were good times. Sam would sometimes forget, but there really were some good times. It seemed the bad times tended to overrule the good times, though. If only it were the other way around.
"My love, what yonder window breaks?" Danny started to quote poorly as he appeared at her window, pulling her away from her thoughts.
"Excuse me, sir. What if I was changing when you decided to appear at my window?" She asked.
"Where's the problem?" Danny said as he shrugged. Sam scoffed and rolled her eyes as she rolled off her bed. "It's a beautiful day. Let's go take a walk."
"Alright, but enter through the front door. My mom doesn't like it when you suddenly appear in my room."
"On it." He said as he disappeared. Sam turned towards her mirror but turned around at the sound of Danny's voice again. "Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yes. Why?"
"You're holding a picture of your dad." He pointed out. She looked down at her hand, not realizing she had taken it with her when she left her bed.
"I'm fine."
"Okay, but he's gone now. For a long time. You don't have to deal with any bad memories anymore." And with that, he disappeared again, leaving her alone in her room. She looked down at the picture once more, a smile forming on her face.
"They weren't all bad." She said to herself. She heard the doorbell ring, then shortly after heard her mother call out for her.
"Sam! Danny's here!" Sam turned around to face her mirror, placing the picture in the corner of it. She stared at herself in the mirror, seeing the picture in the corner of her eye.
"It really wasn't all that bad." She smiled and grabbed a jacket, joining the people she loved the most downstairs.
Memories will stay with you for the rest of your life. The good ones that really matter should be the ones that linger with you forever.
And there we go. Sam is finally able to come to terms with her life and remember only good memories. Yeeeeeey :3
