Olivia sat in the waiting room holding a sleeping Nathan in her arms. Her tears had yet to stop and she just wished somebody would come out and tell her something, anything. She watched the big brown double doors and every time a person wearing blue scrubs came into her vision her heart sped up a bit. She wasn't ready to hear what the surgeon had to say... she wouldn't be able to handle it if they told her that Brian wasn't going to make it. She choked out a sob at the thought.

"Why don't I hold him for a bit?" Nick asked from his spot next to her. He was trying to help in any way that he could.

Olivia looked at him and contemplated handing over the sleeping infant. Her arms were getting tired but she shook her head no. Holding Nathan in her arms gave her a sense of safety and somehow it made her feel like everything was going to end up okay.

"What if he doesn't make it?" Olivia asked Nick after a few moments of silence. Fin and Amanda had heard the question too and both gave sympathetic looks. "I can't... I can't raise a baby without him. I don't even know what I'm doing half of the time. W-what will I do without him?" She looked up at Nick and he could tell that she was just about to break into hysterics.

"He's going to be okay," Nick assured her, "the bullet went through in through. That's good. He isn't going to leave you and Nathan that easily."

As if on cue, Nathan started crying. Olivia looked over to the clock on the wall and saw that it was close to his feeding time. She was in such a hurry when she left the house that she had forgotten to throw a bottle into the diaper bag. "I left his bottle at home," she sighed, "this day..."

"I can go pick it up," Fin offered, "I promised Cragen I would stop by the precinct and fill him in, anyway."

"Thanks, Fin." Olivia fumbled with her keys so she could take her house key off and give it to Fin. She was thankful that her friends were here with her in this moment because she didn't know what she would be doing without them.

"This is suppose to be the best time of our lives," Olivia laughed mechanically, "that's what Brian said to me. Having a baby in the house and getting to watch him grow up... what if he doesn't get to see that?" Her voice broke off toward the end as a new round of tears came flooding to the surface.

"Are you guys here for Brian Cassidy?" A surgeon had entered the waiting room area and Olivia was too upset to have noticed. When she heard him speak she rushed to her feet and introduced herself as Brian's wife.

"Please, please tell me he's going to be okay."

"The bullet was through and through and didn't hit anything major. The healing process will take longer than normal because of the muscle damage it caused through the shoulder. He will need intense physical therapy."

"But he's going to be okay?" Olivia held her breath waiting for the answer.

"He's going to be just fine."

Olivia felt of gush of air escape her lungs and she was so happy that she could hug the older man standing in front of her. "Can I see him?"

The surgeon nodded, "I'm afraid I can't let the baby into the ICU but you are welcome to visit him."

Olivia turned around to face Nick who was more than happy to spend some time with baby Nathan.

"Right this way," the man said as he showed Olivia through the doors and down into the ICU ward. She was just outside Brian's room when she saw him through the window. Tears flooded her eyes again for the umpteenth time as she rushed next to his side.

"You don't ever get to do that again," she chastisised him with a serious look on her face.

"I won't," he grunted. "I'm sorry..."

"I thought I lost you," she said as more tears spilled over. Brian used all of his energy to lift up his hand and grab onto hers.

"You can't get rid of me that easily."

Olivia offered him a small smile but she didn't understand how he could make a joke at a time like this. They had so much to live for now. She had so much to live for now. They had a family and she wasn't going to let anything happen to the family that she worked so hard to build.

"All I could think about was never getting to see you with Nathan again," she whispered as she rubbed her thumb back and forth over his hand. "How the last conversation I had with you was an argument... I'm sorry. I knew you didn't mean it and that you were just upset..."

"Liv-"

"I really thought I was never going to see you again," her voice was now a soft whisper as the tears took over and caused her body to shake. Brian wished he could get up and grasp her into a big hug but obviously that was impossible.

"Liv, stop. I'm okay. We're okay. Everything is going to be okay." He gave her hand a gentle squeeze and gave her his best smile.

"I love you," Olivia said as she leaned over the hospital bed railing and planted a gentle and passionate kiss on his lips.

"I love you too, Liv. I would never leave you like that." He squeezed her hand again before she went to grab a chair so she could sit next to him. She didn't plan on leaving his side anytime soon.
