Yaaaay for a new update! :D This actually has some plot development! Enjoy!
...
Evening had arrived and it was still eerily quiet outside. Not that Deidara had actually been there. Kakashi had practically forbidden him of leaving the house and with some of the stories the guy had told him, Deidara didn't really want to go out alone anymore anyway. These people were truly savages. So for now he was safe inside this place, under some form of protection. It still didn't make much sense as to why Kakashi kept him here, but it was a nice gesture and Deidara would take advantage of it. At least he wasn't being sent back like Kakashi should've done.
For a moment he had been left alone in Kakashi's house, and even with the given opportunity Deidara hadn't dared to snoop around. Who would know what kind of secrets he would find and then with his luck he would get caught snooping. Even if Kakashi was friendly now, it didn't mean it would stay that way.
Before Kakashi went out though Deidara had gotten some rules. He couldn't open the door for anyone, had to be careful when looking out the window and most of all just shouldn't be seen by anyone. Sounded almost like an overprotective parent, but Deidara understood where he was coming from. It wasn't even necessarily about Deidara's safety, but more about Kakashi's reputation. What would his superiors say when they found a blue-eyed person inside Kakashi's house.
For now nothing interesting had happened though. Deidara had been sitting on the kitchen counter, back pressed against the back wall, so that he could stare out the window, but the people outside couldn't really see him. This way he had seen how kids had filled the streets, all dressed in the same black uniform, avoiding eye-contact with each other as they made their way home. There were a few rebels among them, whispering things at each other, but soon a guard would come up out of nowhere and hit them with a stick on their heads. How could children be raised like this? Having no time for fun whatsoever. It was all about following the rules and behaving in the right way. Kids should have some kind of freedom to develop and make choices of their own.
Although the fire nation was still the strongest group of people, so in that case maybe this kind of system actually worked.
After the streets had emptied again and the place became void of sound once again, Deidara noticed evening was setting in. He had no clue what time it was, but it should be getting close to dinner time. He had no idea when Kakashi would be back and if he should just take care of food for himself. For now he would just wait a little longer. His eyelids felt a little heavy as well and with this peaceful environment, as far as you could call it that, Deidara closed his eyes and drifted off into a slumber.
Deidara woke again as the air was suddenly filled with voices, something he had not heard before in this part of town. Not this loud at least. One voice sounded familiar and as he rubbed the sleepy fog from his eyes he realised it was Kakashi, being the one to speak the loudest. Then there was the familiar click of the door being opened and Deidara realised just in time that Kakashi was warning him, that he wasn't alone and that Deidara couldn't be caught.
Trying to make as little sound as possible Deidara jumped off the counter and tiptoed towards the bedroom, hiding behind the door that was still open. It was the best place and no one would suspect him being there, right? Should be fine. Especially when it had gotten really dark already and you could barely see anything passed a few feet away. When had this happened and why was it so dark here? This town held a lot of people, so shouldn't there be lights on out on the street? He could only see a soft glow coming in through the kitchen window, but that was barely enough to see with.
The voices came closer again and it seemed Kakashi's voice had gotten less loud as he stepped inside and noticed Deidara had indeed fled the scene. Of course he also didn't know where Deidara was, but there weren't many places to hide. Kakashi wouldn't be foolish enough to go looking or let this guy look around his place.
For now Deidara had been too nervous to actually listen to what the two were saying, holding his breath to make as little sound as he could. The scraping of the chairs over the floor signalled that they were sitting down and the other guy wasn't leaving yet. Why did this have to happen today? Didn't Kakashi say he didn't really have friends and that everyone mostly spend their evenings alone, unless they are married? The guy wasn't even dating anyone or maybe he lied about it? This really was the worst timing.
'You know I am just checking up on you. We were notified that there had been a sighting of an outsider and then were told that you took care of it. I was only sent here to find out what happened after that. You know everyone is on edge with what happened.'
That was the other guy and it was clear that it hadn't been only Kakashi that had seen Deidara walking around town. He should be grateful that he hadn't been found by anyone else, because then he wouldn't be sitting here safely, but would either been locked up or killed. This guy sounded friendly enough right now, but reactions differed when they were met with someone that didn't belong and obviously Deidara didn't belong. Being called an outsider is not a good thing.
'It is not my problem that the president lost sight of his son. His son is back now, so why all the fuss about things. Did I ever make mistakes?' Kakashi seemed agitated at this point. Following the sounds Deidara thought Kakashi had moved to the kitchen and was making some tea, but wasn't being very careful with the pot. 'The kid was getting in a fight and I broke it up. After that I guided him back to the path and sent him on his way. He should be reaching the first village at this point.' A smooth lie and Deidara was impressed with how steady his voice had sounded. Almost like he believed the lie himself. Made him wonder if Kakashi lied more often and wasn't as clean as a guard as they all perceived him.
But what was this about a problem with a missing son? So normally they weren't this well-guarded? That was rather hard to believe, but maybe normally they wouldn't check things like they did now. So all because of this son running away Deidara was in trouble now? Actually kind of understandable. Deidara would have run as well if he got stuck in a place like this.
'I already figured you did something like that and you know I am just doing my job,' the guy answered, still sounding rather cheerful. 'And you know his son went missing for months. The president still thinks someone kidnapped him and erased his memory or something. Not that we have that technology, but our leader kind of went nuts, didn't he?' A chuckle rose up from the kitchen area, but Kakashi didn't join in.
There was the click of glasses being set on the table and a chair scraping again as Kakashi took a seat. 'Well, we have no idea what's happening of course or what happened to his son. It's still rather strange he just showed up again after being missing for months. I had hoped that after he got back we would have some peace over here, but the demands are still too much.' Kakashi sipped from his tea, absentmindedly gazing out the window. 'The president must be rather pissed that his son isn't telling him where he ran off too and therefore is blaming it on someone else.'
'Can imagine he would react like that. I would be furious if my kid pulled a stunt like that. Not that he ever would. He looks up to his old man.' It stayed silent then as both males drank their tea. Deidara wondered why Kakashi didn't ask the guy to leave, but perhaps it was a superior and he couldn't just ask such a thing. Maybe this was some kind of rule as well. 'You know it makes you wonder where the kid went. What he was up to all this time.'
Kakashi hummed in response, nodding as he placed his cup back on the table. 'Must've been a great experience. You need a good reason to risk the wrath of the president. Can't imagine what kind of punishment the kid got when he finally came back and then refused to talk. Seems rather foolish in my opinion. If the kid wanted to run away, he should just never have come back and grow up somewhere else. I'm sure he would've been a lot happier there.'
'Well, I can't tell you why the kid came back, but I did hear some rumours about what the punishment of the Uchiha brat were.' The guy sounded rather smug, probably because rumours weren't really something you'd expect from around here. 'I heard he is locked up in some tower as some pretty princess and is forbidden to leave unless his father tells him to. Or I guess when his knight in shining armour comes to pick him up.' The guy burst out in laughter and even Kakashi joined in with a slight chuckle. Apparently they mocked their leader a lot, but what did you expect when he treats his civilians like this? 'Hey man, good we had this talk. I'll go report back now and tell everyone it's okay. Idiots really. Some were seriously afraid that you would try and get the guy to cross the city to continue his way. They have no faith.' The chair was being pushed back and then a few seconds later Deidara could hear the faint sound of a door being closed.
Kakashi never replied to the guy, so Deidara assumed he had waved. Still he waited a few minutes before coming out of hiding. He also had the opportunity to save all the information he had just heard. So the whole fire country would be on edge then, with this son thing going on. For some reason he thought of Itachi for a moment, since he was also an Uchiha, but what would be the odds? It could also be that strange family member he had arrived with before that had gone missing. That guy had a lot of reasons not to tell where he had gone to.
'Sorry you had to hear that,' came Kakashi's voice from the kitchen and Deidara took that as a sign that he could show himself. Carefully he pushed himself up from the ground and walked back towards the kitchen area, his eyes focused on Kakashi. 'He likes the company and always overstays his welcome, but it's better not to get in a fight with him. And he isn't all that bad. Never gave me problems and was always friendly to me, so I try to stay nice to him.'
Without a word Deidara sat opposite of Kakashi and noticed the seat was still warm. Not a very comfortable feeling, but it would be weird to take another chair now, as if he was disgusted by the other fellow. The house was still dark, but then Kakashi raised his hand and with a flick of his finger candles started burning all around, finally giving the place some light.
'He's also a great source on things. Like the president's son thing. He was the first to know that the kid was back. I remember the royal guards searching through this town, tearing everyone's home apart, only to leave empty handed again. Like the kid would be here in the first place. He should've stayed away…' As if really waking up Kakashi shook his head and then stood up, realising he should be doing something, like make dinner. 'Sorry, I've just been thinking about this thing a lot. You probably don't even know who I am talking about, but Itachi Uchiha is a big deal here.'
And that was it. Now Deidara knew exactly who he was, even where he was. Why hadn't he been aware of this before? Itachi was the son of the president? That was a big deal and Itachi had actually run away from it to learn more. Not strange Itachi wasn't talking. He would be shunned just for being able to water bend.
'Something wrong?'
Deidara hadn't realised Kakashi was looking at him. His facial expression must've been a clue enough that this bit of information had shocked him. Just the mentioning of his name made Deidara's heart ache and to find out all these things now didn't make it any better. What was he supposed to do now?
'I-I know him…'
