Hi everyone new and old! It's great to be back, I have all my next chapters set up and ready to go. Let's get this finished! This story will have about two or three chapters left before I split it into a mini series of various stories. Please give me your opinions, constructive criticism and love it is appreciated!
I also incorporate bits and pieces from all batman films including suicide squad. Whilst this will contain no spoilers it will contain references to that universe.
I do not own anything!
"Is she going to wake up anytime soon?"
The familiar voice sounded as though it was a million miles away.
"We think so, the serum has taken a great toll on her immune system. She needs to recover."
This voice was deep, it rumbled off the walls. Harley vaguely heard footsteps fading away from her, the air smelt of disinfectant and metal. Where the hell was she?
Her senses began to come back to her one by one, first sound, then smell, next her touch as she felt the rough cotton material beneath her. Eventually she could open her eyes when she finally felt some control of her own body.
Harley opened her eyes to see the most wonderful thing, the Joker sat on a chair opposite the bed staring at her. He observed her carefully as she looked deep into his bright green eyes. Her mouth was slightly open in shock, she prepared herself to speak but the Joker broke the silence first.
"So here we are again Harley girl. But this time, it is me looking after you. How crazy is that?!" He laughed at this, then gave her his special grin, just for her.
Harley spent a few seconds looking round the derelict room, she was lying on a very old bed, the windows were boarded up but cracks of light were filtering through giving the room a slightly warm glow. On the table next to the bed was a tray with some water and what she presumed were painkillers. She reached for the cup and drained the water from it, her mouth felt like it was stuffed with cotton balls.
"Where am I Mister J?" Harley looked at him, ecstatic she was finally with him but very confused and still slightly upset that he had left her all those months ago.
Joker looked straight back at her, all trace of humour gone, and there was a strange glint in his eyes she had never seen before. "Well darling, our mutual friend Mr. Crane did something naughty to you. I came to visit to make sure you were alright and I found you completely gone on your kitchen floor." He stood up and gestured around the room with his arms before laughing;
"Welcome to Casa di Joker, babygirl! It was the nearest of my hideouts, I do apologise for the state. I wasn't expecting any guests." He extended his hand towards her
Harley looked at him expectantly, taking in every beautiful detail of his face she had forgotten. She grabbed his hand and pulled herself off the bed. Joker grinned and as soon as her feet touched the ground, Harley launched herself into his arms and began to sob.
The Joker grinned manically into her hair, slowly stroking it with one hand
"Shush my love. We're together again, I have missed you so much" He said gently into her hair, kissing her on the temple.
Harley moved her head so she was inches away from his, with tears still in her eyes she said
"But you left me Mister J… I thought you didn't love me…"
His gloved hands roughly grabbed her face, forcing her to focus entirely on him as he stared into her eyes.
"Harley, Harley, Harley… Of course I love you. I made a promise didn't I? I just needed to perfect everything so we could be together. Don't you trust me?" He said frowning at her, his grip getting even tighter.
Harley began to panic, she hated the sound of disappointment in his voice. She responded by kissing him as hard as she could, pulling him as physically close as possible. Joker responded eagerly, wrapping one hand in her hair, pulling it tight whilst the other wrapped around her tiny waist. Harley put both her arms around his neck, kissing him with all the passion she could muster. She broke it briefly and whispered "I will always trust you" before kissing him again. The Joker smiled into the kiss, she was nearly there. She was falling down the rabbit hole straight into his arms, straight into the world of utter madness.
Meanwhile on the other side of Gotham, Scarecrow was sat in his cell meditating. He was supposed to be in isolation for 3 months, this was the only way he was going to get by without completely losing himself. No reading materials, no interaction, no appointments. He was lucky to get away with that phone call to yesterday but Crane was becoming extremely bored after such an exciting week with her. As he sat and memorised her exquisite screams, the door to his cell slowly opened. Crane shielded his eyes from the sudden blinding light of the hallway only to quickly return to the bleak darkness of the cell.
He instantly knew someone else was in the room with him, he could feel their energy occupy the room, hear the faint breathing.
He spoke gently "May I help you?" however he was completely at a disadvantage and he knew it. No weapons, no fear toxin, nothing. He waited for a response, his body rigid as he prepared to move in some way.
A figure stepped closer in his direction, clearly male, around 6 foot. It was still far too dark to make out any detail however the mysterious character quietly responded to his question
"This ain't personal Crane."
Scarecrow stood up with lightning speed "Harvey? Is that you? Why are you in my cell?"
He could feel fear rising inside him, no! He was supposed to be the master of fear, not to cower at someone else.
Two-Face gradually walked towards him, whatever little light there was in the room made his disfiguration look ever more menacing.
"You touched Jokers property, Crane. You gotta pay and I owe him this favour."
It took Scarecrow a second but it finally clicked "Who Harleen? Since when does he own her?" He asked with a snap, since when has she been the clowns?
Harvey cracked his knuckles and laughed "Don't be stupid Crane, everybody knows she's been his girl ever since she stepped in this joint. He ain't pleased with how you been treating her recently." He took a few more steps towards Scarecrow.
Crane shrank back against the wall, there was nowhere else to go. He was literally backed into a corner. His voice shook with both anger and fear "It was for my research! She injected herself, I did not touch her! I simply gave her the means to protect herself from me." He proclaimed as loudly as he dared.
This caused Two-Face to stop "Woah hold the phone, she injected herself?" his voice laced with confusion "Joker got told that you stabbed her!"
"No! That was a cover up story so she wouldn't be admitted for being a lunatic." Crane exclaimed in annoyance.
Harvey grunted at this information "Well I know your stuff protects her from your toxins, Joker found her yesterday night passed out in her apartment. He's had one of his special docs running tests on her all day."
Crane stared at Two-Face "But then why does he want me hurt? Surely I did the idiot girl a favour!"
Harvey laughed at this, a hearty deep laugh "She ain't yours to play with, Crane. You still messed with the Jokers work and he don't take too kindly to that."
He slowly put his hand into his pocket before retrieving his lucky coin.
"Now Scarecrow" He ran the coin between his fingers before looking at him "Heads or Tails?"
Harley was delirious with happiness as The Joker took her for a tour through the hide out, admittedly she wasn't exactly paying attention but as long as she was with him it was impossible to focus on anything else. He held her hand throughout the whole time and she couldn't stop grinning.
The Joker led her into a great large ball room, the building they were in used to be an old memorial hall. It had closed down over 20 years ago but it was still a sight to behold.
Joker let go of her hand and turned round to face her as he walked backwards, arms wide out as though he was about to conduct a band
"I have a surprise for you Harley!" He grinned, his eyes gleaming at her, his excitement was palpable.
Harley clapped her hands together "Oooh a surprise just for me?" she couldn't contain the giant smile that spread across her face.
He laughed loudly before nodding at a nearby henchman who nodded back and walked into an adjoining room.
Joker strode quickly back to Harley, standing behind her and putting his hands in front of her eyes. She could smell his aftershave with other smells which she could only guess were blood and hairspray. They combined together to an aroma that was so him she wished she could bottle it and carry it with her.
Harley shivered as she felt his lips at her ear "Are you ready for your surprise Harley? You won't let me down will you?" he whispered.
Let him down? What does that mean?
She answered regardless "Never Mister J." She heard the sound of feet moving across the room and a muffled cry. What was going on?
"I'm counting on you babydoll." He said right into her hair before kissing it and letting go of her eyes.
A few feet away from Harley was a man she had never seen before, on his knees, gagged and crying. He had two of the Jokers henchman either side of him, making sure he didn't run. Harley turned in her confusion to Joker who was staring at her with his hand outstretched, offering her a gun.
"Wait Mister J, you want me to…to…." She couldn't finish the sentence before looking back and forth between the crying man and the love of her life. Panic filled her eyes and the Joker knew he could lose his creation if he wasn't careful.
The Joker looked at her, right into those deep blue eyes of hers. He wanted to destroy all the innocence in them, take away the confusion and free her from her moral compass. To join him in his mad, mad world.
"To kill him, yes Harley." He spoke gently, grinning slightly as he did so.
Harley opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. She stared into his eyes, pleading for a reason, for an escape but the Joker wasn't letting her get away so easily.
He placed the gun into her shaking hand before speaking again, still gentle, still loving
"Harley, look at this piece of filth. What do you think he did?"
She had no choice but to look into the man's face, tears streaming down his face. He was tubby, in his mid-thirties, bald but with facial hair. He wore an old tracksuit and gold chain.
Harley couldn't help but think he looked pathetic more than anything else. But surely that isn't a good enough reason to kill someone?
"I don't know Mister J… he looks pretty harmless to me…" She replied with uncertainty.
This was evidently the wrong thing to say as Joker's face drastically changed to anger.
"NO HARLEY. HE ISN'T HARMLESS." Harley jumped back a mile, unsure of what to do. Joker pushed a hand through his hair after shouting so loud, she was sure the Batman would have heard.
The Joker took off his trench coat and threw it away from him before beginning to unbutton his shirt. Normally Harley would be thrilled at this as she had never seen him without clothing but right now, she was terrified.
Joker watched her carefully as he took off his purple shirt seeing the mix of fear and lust in her eyes. The first thing she noticed was how defined his muscles were, he was lean but extremely toned, he also had a few tattoos on his chest and sides. She didn't get a chance to make sense of them before he turned around and exposed his back to her.
Harley gasped in shock, gun still in hand she squeezed it tight as tears came to her eyes. Across the Jokers back was scar after scar, one atop another. But what caught her the most was a large bandage, with blood seeping out of it coming from his left shoulder.
Joker walked up to her and grabbed her chin, making her look at him.
"Harley not everyone is who they appear, that waste of space did this to me. He is the leader of some loser gang that decided trying to kill me would be a way of getting big. But unfortunately for him and his gang, he's a lousy shot."
He let go of her face, picked up his shirt and slowly buttoned it up again. He walked towards the man on the ground. He knelt down on his level, before grabbing his switchblade from his pocket and pressing it into the corners of his mouth, making a slight nick into his skin. The man moaned against the gag, pleading for his life.
Harley stood rooted to the spot she was in staring at the man she loved, the fact that someone tried to kill him horrified her. Why would anyone want to hurt him? Don't they understand he was simply misunderstood?
Joker continued talking to her from his position in front of the man "I'm clearly asking too much from you Harley, I thought I could count on you but I am just going to have to do this myse…"
The blood splattered his face before he could finish speaking, he looked up at her. He hadn't even heard her move. She stood staring at what she did, smoke still coming out from the gun. Blood was covered her whole outfit, she dropped the gun which landed loudly on the wooden floorboards.
Joker stared at the mess she had created, the beautiful chaotic mess. The Joker began to laugh, she had done it. She had killed for him.
He grabbed her into a hug, lifting her from the floor, she whispered into his ear
"No one gets to hurt you Mister J. I love you."
Joker put her back down and kissed her roughly before dragging her through the halls to the front door. It was already night time and waiting for them was a purple Lamborghini. One of the most beautiful cars Harley had ever seen. The Joker walked over to the car and opened the passenger door, looking at her.
"It's you and me against the world Harley. You will be my Queen of Gotham City."
Harley looked at him long and hard before beginning to laugh herself. It was first a slight giggle which all too soon turned into complete hysterical laughter. Harley walked towards her love and climbed into the car. The Joker got in and turned the car on and looked at his perfect little creation
"Ready to go for the ride of your life babydoll?"
Harley grinned in return as they set off.
The sounds of their laughter carried throughout the night.
