Severus was struggling again. His body refused to transition from Dan Bian to Yun Shou, cutting the energy flow the kata was giving and leaving him stranded and awkward. That was only his major block. He knew he was making mistakes in his body placement during the whole kata and it frustrated him. He had been studying Taichichuan for almost nine months now but while the moves were not as foreign any more, the art was still eluding him even as he worked hard on it. Merlin, Transfiguration had not been that complicated.

"Stàt."

Severus bit back a sigh of relief, stopping and getting into Chi Kung, the relaxed posture. Wirkrund was smiling slightly.

"I think Yi Yin Fa is in order."

Severus nodded, relieved, and slipped into the first kata position, the first he had learn. He had improved a lot since that first time. His body moved slowly through the kata, Severus adapting his posture as he felt the energy not moving freely. At its end, he performed the Yi Yin Fa again even more slowly, focusing on his breathing to smooth the energy path a bit more. He did it again and again, faster each time, until he ended with a flash, Magic dancing around him. He felt good.

"I think we will end practice on this high note today. Kiitos Daok."

Severus felt himself flush under the praise. He was still surprised when the wise Master complimented him.
Drunek was beside Wirkrund, unusual as it was not yet the time for his lesson. Taichichuan always was early in the morning to wake up the body with the sun and strengthen it for the day, as Master Wirkrund said. Sometimes, the Master took them to a foreign location. To Severus surprise, the environment influenced his kata and he had to adapt to it to perform Taichichuan. Then, Oaths theory or goblins history and tradition usually followed. Severus wished he had had Wirkrund instead of Binns during his Hogwarts years. Severus' Master took over after lunch until Severus' mind saturated or Frekka called them for diner.
Drunek presence was even more surprising when he had spent every morning of the last two weeks with Frekka and Felsen, the newest addition to their family. Severus did not think he had ever been as anxious as that night, waiting for Frekka to give birth as hours passed and cries of pain pierced the night.
The birth had been difficult but both Drunek's wife and baby were in good health, also Frekka was exhausted. Other Goblins came to help take care of her family as was apparently the tradition, but Drunek and Severus were both trying to help as much as they could.

"You are expected."

Drunek's voice called Severus back to the present brutally. His heart stuttered in hope. Lucius was marrying Narcissa today. Had he been allowed to visit Severus before the ceremony?
Drunek led Severus to his room with instruction to wash up thoroughly. Severus did without protest. When he came back to the bedroom, an elegant robe was on his bed. Looking it over, Severus saw the Malfoy emblem as well as goblins runes embroiled in the hem of the sleeves.
He dressed, heart beating furiously in his chest, carefully occluding his mind blank. One Goblin he had not met yet entered his room and braided his hair. When he watched himself in the mirror to check his appearance, Severus almost did not recognize himself. He often avoided looking at his reflection, already knowing he was no beauty prize. Today, he looked healthier than he had ever had. Body lean but not starved, warrior braid in clean hair, while his face would never be called handsome, he was not ugly either and cut a striking figure.
His Master interrupted his thoughts.

"You are ready, good. Come with me."

Occluding harder than ever, Severus followed him to the Room of Crossings from which Goblins travelled to other places. Drunek smiled and Severus got the impression he was enjoying himself far too much.

"The arch is ready for you. You know how it works, just walk through it and have fun."

Willing his body not to shake, Severus bowed lightly to his Master then walked through.

"You look well, Severus. Taller than I expected but well."

Severus opened eyes he had not realized he had closed. He stood still, watching Abraxas unbelieving.
The man was dressed as finely as he and wore a huge smile as he looked Severus over, not even an ounce of reproach on his face from Severus not telling him about the werewolf incident.
He walked to Severus and embraced him, holding on tightly. Severus managed to breath again, returning the hug with as much force. He felt his eyes moisten, as happiness flew through him.

"Come, son. Lucius does not know." Said Abraxas, eyes suspiciously bright.

Severus nodded, throat too tight to let any word out, and followed his Mentor.
They walked out of the room of Crossings, through corridors and halls until they were outside.

"Have you learned to apparate yet?"

"No. There wasn't time I think. It's not my Master priority."

Early in his apprenticeship, Severus has decided to always think of Drunek as his Master, to make it easier not to let any information slip. Today, he was glad to have made it a habit.
Abraxas nodded.

"I dare say it should not be difficult for you when you decide to."

He took Severus by the arm and apparated them into Malfoy's Manor.

"Father, in the name of Morgana, where are you!"

"It seemed we are back not a moment too soon." Whispered Abraxas to Severus with a wink.

"What is the matter son?" Asked Abraxas, calling back to his son.

Lucius entered the living room like a tornado.

"I have been looking for you for hours! I cannot find my circlet! And that is the least of my worries, I do not remember where I put the rings either!"

Lucius was so anxious it was almost funny. Merlin, Severus was never getting married if marriage reduced proud men to this state. If he ever found a girl who wanted him...

"We will find your circlet. And you left the rings with me to ensure they would not be lost." Answered Abraxas calmly with a benevolent smile.

Lucius sighed in relief as he properly looked at his father for the first time since coming in. He froze, eyes wide. Blinked. Blinked again. Then rushed to hug Severus fiercely.

"I'm so glad you're here. Merlin, why did you not tell me?"

Severus was hugging his friend as vigorously, overwhelmed by happiness and emotion, lost in the joy of being reunited after almost a year and still being welcomed.
Lucius released him suddenly.

"Well? Why did you not tell me instead of making me crazy over your absence and..."

"He did not know Lucius." Interrupted Abraxas.

"He did not? " said Lucius incredulously. "Then who..."

He narrowed his eyes at his father.

"How could you leave the both of us like this when you knew he would be there?" He shouted, finger pointed in accusation at his father.

" I did not want to get your hopes high. Neither of yours." Answered Abraxas quietly. " Do remember you are talking to your father Lucius." He added with a hint of sharpness.

Lucius looked at him for a bit, challenge in his eyes, before huffing and turning to Severus.

"Come, we need to find my circlet or Cissa won't say yes."

He grabbed Severus' arm and rushed toward his rooms, not giving him any choice but to follow as Abraxas' laugh resonated behind them.
The following hours were a whirlwind of clothes, jewels, hairdressers and last minute details. Severus felt his head hurt just being there and wondered how Lucius could bear it. Was your wedding day not supposed to be the best day of your life or something?

"Severus, " called Lucius during one brief moment of peace as they were on their own in his room.

"Yes?"

"Come here."

"Lucius?" Asked Severus as he obeyed.

Lucius was bearing one cushion on which two magnificent rings were attached by silk ribbons. The rings were delicate yet artfully designed. They would suit the couple perfectly.

"Here." said Lucius giving Severus the cushion. "You are the Lord of the Rings." He said with a smirk.

Severus looked at his friend flabbergast. The what?

Lucius rolled his eyes.

"Come on Severus, it's a good one."

"What are you talking about? Lord of the rings? What kind of tacky title is this?"

Lucius sighed.

"Don't tell me you're the only Muggle who hasn't read this book."

Severus glared at him.

"I am not a Muggle."

Lucius glared back.

"You know what I mean."

Severus crossed his arms, lips pressed together..

"Come on, Severus," whined Lucius. "Focus on my point here. The guy is like the perfect Slytherin. He gave Elves, Dwarves and Men rings of power but secretly forged one for himself which controlled all the other rings. The ploy is royal, a textbook example to follow! Except for the part where he destroyed and twisted everything in his quest to rule the world… And where it seems his ring was in fact his Horcrux." trailed off Lucius thoughtfully.

The deception was indeed beautiful. He may let Lucius give him this nickname after all, if Lucius clarified one point.

"What's an Horcrux?"

"Shit.", said Lucius, looking around to check nobody else was coming. "I promised Father I would not spread the knowledge. I only know about it because of my travels in China."

The only reason why Abraxas had agreed to Lucius marrying Narcissa sooner than he preferred had been for Lucius do finish his French school, learn how to run the estate as well as travel to China all in the same year to understand what he would be required to do even when married – and because Father wanted me to suffer for my gain and barely meet with Cissa for months as a test for both of us, had said Lucius when he recounted his busy year to Severus.
Lucius paused, watching Severus carefully.

"But you should know it exists."

Severus waited patiently. Lucius always told beautiful stories.

"I learned about Horcruxes, or Kengaïki as they call it in China, when I signed a Contract stating I had never nor would I ever create one. It seems during the first muggle China-Japan war, the Japanese were led by one Wizard who had made one. Creating a Horcrux means tearing out a part of one's soul to put it into an object for safekeeping. It prevents death but the Wizard is unbalanced and slowly descends into insanity. It led to the Port-Arthur slaughter, several thousands of Chineses died that day."

Note to self: never create a Horcrux. Severus felt shaken to his very core. He would ask Drunek his thoughts on the matter.

"I asked Father if he had heard about it. I don't think I have ever seen him this afraid."

Severus felt even more troubled. But Lucius kept talking, distracting him from dark thoughts.

"Never mind, it doesn't matter anyway. What matters is that you are the keeper of our rings until we say our vow. You'd better not lose them." He said with a smile that did not belay the warning in his words.

Severus would be cut in tiny pieces and buried under the Manor if he dared lose the precious jewels.

"I am honoured Lucius. However, why did you not chose another of your friends?"

Lucius looked at him in shock.

"Another friend?"

Severus nodded.

Lucius frowned as he came closer to stand in front of Severus.

"You are not my friend Severus. You are my little brother, in anything but blood." He said gravely. "Was the message on your watch not plain enough?"

"I..."

Severus was at loss for words. Unconsciously, his fingers brushed the precious watch he always kept on him. Yes, the message was clear. And yet, …
Suddenly, Lucius was hugging him tight.

"I am so happy to have you here with me today, Severus. What would I do without my brother to witness this day of celebration?"

Severus smiled in his … brother's arms. They were almost the same height now, he was surprised to realise. Almost one year had passed. And his family was still here for him.
They were interrupted by the wedding planner Abraxas had hired – much more efficient and less dramatic then the three you had chosen Lucius, what were you thinking? - and wanted to see Severus for his part in the Ceremony. It was almost a surprise when the time came to apparate to the Malfoy's summer estate where the ceremony would take place.
The mansion was magnificent, an architectural jewel with gardens and woods all around. Yet Severus was amazed it felt as cosy as their main home. He discovered he also had a his own room in the mansion, making him warm all over. Lucius just looked at him as if he was the dumbest person in the world, then said Severus would need to visit all the other Malfoy properties to check all his rooms were to his tastes. Severus only nodded, wondering if someone could truly burst from happiness. Of course, he really should not because Lucius would never forgive him for ruining his wedding and would find ways to bring Severus back from the dead only to kill him himself.
He gave even more thoughts to the matter when Evan and Jonathan smothered him in their arms. The Malfoy heir wedding was cause for school dispensation. How laughable and perfect. Even more so when they assured him the weeding had been Hogwarts main gossip for the last few weeks, pushing momentarily to the background the fights and disagreement over Lord Voldemort's and their group's actions.
Lord Malfoy had invited the entire Pureblood population – minus Albus Dumbledore- as well as many others. Severus was relieved to learn the Potters had gracefully declined as they were focused on a more pressing matter. Evan had been right, Black now was a Potter. His family rejection had been total as they not only disinherited him but also banished him from the House. It was almost unheard of for a subject who had not yet reach his majority. Severus could not imagine the backlash of magic it must have been for Black... Potter bis now. He was not quite sane already so who knew how his mind would react? The Potter adopting him was really great news as their magic should sooth and attenuate the loss of the Black House. But Black had been the heir, would it suffice?

Severus sighed. Evan and Jonathan would keep him apprised of any development. He was really glad not to be at Hogwarts to discover life with two Potters.
He did not have the time to dwell more on the subject as many guests arrived and several were intrigued by his Apprenticeship. They tried their best to make him give away secret information, and it almost became a game to ask the weirdest question and see how Severus would evade. It was good practice but nerve tiring and Severus was glad when the Ceremony began.
Narcissa was beautiful in her white dress, the cut simple but complimenting her curves so nicely Severus has no doubt it had cost a fortune. The shining yet delicate diadem on her head to hold her veil was the final touch, matching Lucius' own circlet. They were stunning together, like the prince and princess coming out of a fairytale. Severus could not help his voice shaking a bit as he bore witness to their exchange of vows.
He was surprised when he felt their bond form through magic before fading. Was it what it would feel like to have his Khorlos open? He strained in vain to feel the bond again, but only felt their magical presence. Severus almost recoiled at the realisation. He had been so absorbed by what he was learning at the Goblins he had pushed aside his questions on sensing magic. To his surprise, he realised his sense was far more developed than before. All at once, he felt like he was sensing the entire assembly. He was so overwhelmed he almost panicked, before his Occlumency training kicked in. Occluding the feeling away, he concentrated on turning off his sense of magic. He breathed a sigh of relief when it worked smoothly. Severus subreptitiously looked around, but none had noticed his predicament as all were focused on the newly wedded couple. He was a fool to have put this aside, especially when his trials had made huge use of this sense. However, his Goblin Masters had not brought up the subject once since then. Another question for Drunek when he went back.
Mentally shaking his head at himself, Severus focused back on the ceremony. Lucius and Narcissa were surrounded by well wisher and he bit back a sigh. He waited patiently for the crowd to congratulate the newly wedded couple before finally taking his turn.

"Severus, finally!" Exclaimed Lucius. " I thought I would need to come and drag you myself."

"Not my fault you have so many admirers Luce." Answered Severus with a smirk.

Lucius raised his eyebrow at him.

"What?" Said Severus defensively. "I get to give you a nickname now you´re... now we´re..."

Lucius smiled softly and nodded, reaching to tug on Severus' braid lightly.

"Indeed, nicknames are little brothers' prerogative."

Severus felt his face warm as he hugged his brother tightly.

"Congratulations Luce. I´m glad to be here today."

"So am I."

Severus released him reluctantly, turning to Narcissa.

" Congratulations Lady Malfoy. You are absolutely mesmerizing today." Said Severus with a smile, hoping he was not too awkward.

" Thank you Severus" said Narcissa warmly. "It is a relief to have you with us today."

To his surprise, she took him in her arms for a hug. He looked to Lucius for help, but his brother only laughed at him. Awkwardly, he put his arms around her lightly.
She huffed as she released him.

"I am not made of glass Severus. Next time I expect a proper hug, like the ones you give my husband."

"Yes Ma´am." He blurted out, immediately mortified at his inadequate answer.

But she only laughed gently.

"You may call me Cissa. I heard so much about you I feel like I've known you for a long time Severus." She paused thoughtfully.

"May I write you during your Apprenticeship?"

"With pleasure." Was the only possible answer, even as his startled mind wondered why she would want to.

"Your apprenticeship doesn't make it easy to get to know my new little brother." She said.

She seemed... sad. Severus was beginning to think he was dreaming. Narcissa Malfoy came from the Black House. The House was their ally in Lord Voldemort's movement. Yet, her cousin's and sister's behaviours did not make Severus incline to get to know her. However, she was his ... brother's wife now. Lucius lover her, and that should be more than enough for him to try and get to know her. He would watch her closely today, but for now she displayed none of the Blacks' most famous traits. Her hair even were as fair as theirs were dark.

"Come." She told him as she entwined her arm with his, "Walk with me while my husband is distracted by friends and before someone else comes for me."

Severus did not resist, following her as she led them through one of the garden path.

" I know you must be wary of my parents' House." She said bluntly.

Severus almost stumbled in shock. Only the fact he had begun occluding as they walked saved him.

"Regulus and I are quite close. He admires you. I don't think you even realize how much your impressed your housemates." She said with a touch of awe. " He was really worried during your fifth year when you seemed ... out of it. I did not tell Lucius because your two friends were watching over you from what Regulus told me. Honestly it is a relief to have you out of there, even with the restrictions of your Apprenticeship."

Severus' throats felt too tight to swallow. He had had no idea some people were watching him that closely. He had taken care to cross Regulus Black's path as little as possible because of his brother's actions, to avoid unnecessary complications. Maybe he should not have.
Narcissa was looking at him intently, looking for something. He felt like he was taking his trials again, without knowing what he had to gain or lose this time. He forced himself to face her and meet her eyes squarely. He had nothing to be afraid of. Nothing to be ashamed of. He was a goblin Apprentice and Lucius was his brother.
Wait. Did it mean Abraxas considered himself ... He had called him son... But...

Narcissa´s laugh brought him back from dangerous territory.

"Both Lucius and Regulus told me you had no idea of your impact on your House. You really don't." She shook her head. "Lucius told me you might have been king if you had remained. Regulus thought it would be hard after your fifth year. Yet here you are, apprenticed to a famous if mysterious Master, and favoured by our Lord."

Our Lord?

"He is always taking you as an example, the Half-blood living among Muggles who rose because of two things only. Hard work and Slytherin's spirit. For him, you are the living proof taking Muggleborns from their family and giving them to a wizarding one would work." She paused, eyeing him curiously.

" All mentoree have improved since they began the program, but you shine hundred times more than the others."

That was not good.
She nodded with satisfaction.

"I see you understand. You will have to be the best. Even more when you are not a Muggleborn but a Half-blood. Some will try to discredit you when you are back from learning. If you are still the favourite. My sister is most displeased."

"Why are you telling me all this?" Information freely given was not Slytherin's way. Especially not between strangers.

"Regulus and I are quite close. We understand the most important thing is family." She paused, looking at him with such intensity he felt like she could see all the layers around him and more. " Today you are family."

Severus swallowed thickly. He felt like she would do anything for family, but expected the same in return. She would give and take everything for and from family.

"I am a Black. Some say our Magic is as dark as our name. We do excel in the darkest Arts. It is so easy to get lost in the Dark." She said almost dreamily but her eyes were sharp and focused on Severus.

He had no doubt she was both testing him and trusting him. Lucius was no fool and would never marry a beautiful but empty head.

"You know our family motto. Toujours pur. French words have so many subtleties. It may mean always pure. It may mean still pure. Nowadays, most of my House translate it in blood always pure. My sister is especially driven to keep our name above the common mud."

She was as good a storyteller as Lucius, her voice airy but captivating, cajoling you to follow along the path she was leading you to.

"When I swore my Oath to my House, it was only supposed to be a rite of passage into adulthood. But that night, I dreamed of my great-great-grand-mother. She told me about our motto. Dans les Ténèbres mais toujours pur. In the Darkness but still pure. Dans les ténèbres, notre magie reste toujours pure. In the Darkness, our Magic still remains pure. You know how the Dark can easily twist Magic if one is not careful or chose the easy way."

Severus nodded. Mother's lessons remained engraved in his mind forever. The price of sacrifice.
She laughed humourlessly.

'Regulus told me you would understand. He's a really good watcher. He notices things. The devil is in the details as they say. My sacrifices have always been my own."

There was so much pain in her voice. For the first time, Severus really wondered what it meant to be a Black. What kind of teaching happened behind the closed doors of their manor. He had made a mistake, judging the whole House on Sirius and Bellatrix Black. Judging on the rumours surrounding the House.

"The Proud and Noble House of Black," she said almost mockingly, "won't survive it they don't find their way back to the House Oath." She took a deep breath, gathering herself as if she had shown more than she had intended.

"Lord Voldemort is a good beginning. He is giving us boundaries. He is making us respect these boundaries. He understands the Dark. He is strong enough to win against my aunt. Clever enough to support Regulus when he pushes for changes once he become the House Head.."

She took his hand suddenly.

"You are dear to our Lord. You are dear to my husband. You are family. You know the Dark. At least I think you will know it after your Apprenticeship. Will you help me if I need you to?"

Severus did not know what to say, dumbstruck by all she had said. If it was true, she was putting so much trust in him. He could not help but wonder if having a Malfoy for husband was part of her great plan to save the Black House. He truly believed she would do anything for family. The question was, today, was she a Black or a Malfoy?
She let him think in silence, content to walk by his side in the beautiful alleys he was barely seeing. In the end, he knew only one answer mattered.

"Today, Are you a Black or a Malfoy?"

She tilted her head as she looked at him.

"I am both."

Severus shook his head.

"You know you cannot be. You said yourself family is the most important for you. I believe you. Who are your family today?"

She recoiled as if he had hurt her. As if she had not considered she could not keep her loyalties to both Houses. He let her think through her shock. When she looked at him, her eyes were shining with tears.

"Thank you Severus. I believe I can be both a Black and a Malfoy. But you are right. I should be prepared for the eventuality I have to chose a side. I …" she trailed of, eyes lost in thoughts.

"You don't have to chose right now."

She looked at him sharply and he shrugged.

"I am not an expert in Oaths and House Magic. However there must be a transition allowed by the Oaths when you marry into another House for you to find your footing. For you to decide which House you will favour most."

She nodded thoughtfully.
He knew he should left it at that. She had already shared to much. But he needed to know.

" You call Lord Voldemort my Lord?"

"I do."

Only a slight breath intake indicated any surprise at his question.

"What do you call Abraxas then?"

"Abraxas. And Lucius is my husband." She looked at him defiantly " Lucius calls him my Lord too. You must understand. He gives us hope. Hope we will go back to live in harmony with Magic, with our tradition. Hope we will stop foregoing our celebrations because it scares Muggleborns. Hope our children will truly live in the magical world they deserve."

"Yet you do not bear his Mark."

She laughed lightly.

"Lucius asked me not to. He said he didn´t want me to go on interventions when I will one day bear the Malfoy heir. I think he doesn't want another man's mark on me."

Severus got the impression she was pleased with Lucius possessiveness. He agreed he would not like his wife to bear another man's mark either, even if he was Lord Voldemort.

"Does it bother you Lucius has the Mark?"

She laughed again.

" I don't feel threatened by our Lord. And I know who Lucius would chose between him and me."

Severus wondered at her words. Was Lucius so unsecured he refused to let his wife bear the Mark he himself so proudly exhibited or was it really mere possessiveness? Or was he being more cautious with the woman he loved than with himself and heading Abraxas' words?
They came back to the main garden where the guests were enjoying canapés, both deep in thoughts. Severus was glad his last questions had lightened the air between them, although he had not expected them to.
She surprised him by kissing him lightly on the cheek before joining Lucius who smiled at his wife so brightly Severus really hoped she would become a Malfoy.

"Severus!"

He turned toward the call, surprised to see Lord Voldemort coming up to him with a wide smile.

" I am so happy to finally congratulate you in person. You've grown into quite the fine young man since the last time we talk.

Severus felt his cheeks heat.

"Thank you my Lord. It is the first time I leave my Master since I became his Apprentice."

"You could not miss such a fine occasion. I should have known Abraxas would not permit the wedding in your absence."

The Lord paused, looking at Severus intently.

"You really are radiant Severus. What are you doing to be so?"

Time to obfuscate. It was going to be fun.

"I am currently focusing on Runes. My Master's approach is different from Hogwarts', it almost feel like I have to learn from scratch."

"This is interesting. I would think Runes are Runes. Why such differences?"

Severus spread his hands slightly.

"I'm afraid I am only beginning my Lord. I don't have a clear and encompassing vision of this application. You will have to ask me again in a few years."

Lord Voldemort smiled ruefully.

"Of course Severus. You're so brilliant I expect the impossible from you." he paused, as if he hesitated to say what he truly wanted to.

"I do not want to pressure you. Yet I feel I must tell you I expect much from you. I have no doubt by the end of your Apprenticeship, your name will be known."

"My Lord, I am not that good. I..."

"You are.", Lord Voldemort interrupted firmly. " Your name will be known, not as famous as Libatius Borage or Phineas Bourne, but enough to make people notice you and listen to you."

The Lord was expecting too much of him. He had to realize it.

"You remind me of myself. Both Half-Bloods with a thirst for knowledge and an impressive mind."

Lord Voldemort was a Half-Blood?

"I do not advertise this because Half-Bloods are few in our world and often disdained by Purebloods and Muggleborns alike, as if they did not know what to make of us. Looking at the both of us, I can understand why they would be wary." said the Lord with a smirked to Severus. "I am Slytherin's heir through my mother, but my father was a lowly Muggle, much the same as your father from what I gathered. It's a pity your mother did not belong to one of the powerful bloodlines to counterbalance her choice in husband. But Lord Malfoy told me there really was nothing to use from your Mother's side." said Lord Voldemort with sadness in his voice.

"There really isn't." Agreed Severus, silently thanking Abraxas for not divulging any information. He really did not need anyone to meddle between his grandfather and he when he did not know what he wanted from the man.

"It doesn't matter in the end. You already are a symbol for our cause, and when you are back from your apprenticeship, your help will be priceless. We need balance in our group, between our different factions."

Severus looked at him sharply, surprised he was admitting the existence of some dissension.

"It is the reason why nothing happened until I brought them together. I know I am the glue holding our entire group together. I must find how to create the best compromise for all of us and the future generations."

"What do you gain from it?" Blurted our Severus, mortified as soon as the words left his mouth. He had always had trouble not speaking his mind, but his talk with Narcissa had left him more frayed than he had thought to commit such a blunder. Jonathan and Evan would be horrified. Lucius would laugh like mad. Abraxas...

To his relief. Lord Voldemort only laugh.

"The Slytherin question asked under the guise of a Gryffindor. I like you more and more each time we meet Severus." Smirked the Lord. " More seriously, I will gain knowledge and safety for all Wizards, Purebloods, Muggleborns or Half-bloods. I will gain power as Minister of Magic. I will gain reconnaissance from my peers."

Severus felt a new respect for that man who answered him so directly. He had no doubt Lord Voldemort had not told him everything, but he had also told him the truth. Severus could feel it in his bones.

"I won't keep you from your friends and family Severus, you only get one day from what I understood. I will only say I look forward to you officially joining us when you are a Master, if only so we can discuss Magic and research together." said Lord Voldemort with a smile.

Severus blushed at the praise. The Lord would take the time to work with him even through his politically charged agenda… Severus almost shook his head, thinking back to Lily and the doubts she had ingrained in him. Lord Voldemort was ambitious – healthily so- but he was not the danger. The Black faction was - Abraxas worries confirmed it - and Severus would help the Lord contain them. When he was strong enough. When he was back from the Goblins.

"Thank you again my Lord, I look forward to it." answered Severus fervently.

The Lord clasped his shoulder before walking away, immediately grabbed by Rodolphus Lestrange who began talking to him animatedly. Severus watched them thoughtfully, thinking about what the Lord expected from him. He was startled – but hopefully managed to hide it - when his gaze crossed Bellatrix's who was glaring at him as if she could spear him with her eyes. He shivered, reminded of why he was keen on avoiding all Blacks. He forced himself to bow lightly toward her before turning and walking away, back straight and head proud.
He had not made two steps when he was accosted by a Witch he had never met before.

"Good evening Mister Snape. May I impose on you for a few words?"

Severus sighed internally. He wanted to refuse. But the stranger clearly belonged to an important House. She was at least Abraxas' age, dressed in a tasteful green and golden dress that underlined her slim silhouette and brought out the distinction of her bearing.

"With pleasure, Lady…?"

"Prince. Madeline Prince." she said with a sad smile.

No. He did not want to talk with her. He did not want her to look at him hopefully yet fully prepared for rejection. Where his Grandfather was cold and forbearing, his Grandmother was warm and frail. He had no doubts she knew how to use her appearance to her full advantage in contrast to her husband's. And yet…
Wordlessly, he offered her his arm. She took it delicately, feathered touch on his arm and blinding smile on her face.

"May I call you Severus?" she asked.

He wanted to say no. He wanted to dislike her. With a smile and a few words, his defences were already slipping. Was he so starved for affection? Would it be different if Abraxas' wife still lived?

"You may." Severus stifled the urge to say more and keep the conversation going.

"I would like you to call me Madeline… I fully understand you not wanting to call me something more … and it might be for the best that no Wizard except Abraxas, your Grandfather and I, knows of our relationship."

He laughed humourlessly, more of a bark really.

"Which relationship?"

She nodded, unsurprised yet her light brown eyes showed he had hurt her. He buried the sting of guilt immediately.

"I deserve your reproach and defiance. I deserve your mistrust, your coldness and more. Yet I hope. Everyday I hope. Your letter to your Grandfather gave him hope too. I need to know if the task you gave him truly is a hope to mend our relationship in the future, or if you are merely using him to get your revenge."

She pressed her hand harder on his arm to prevent him from talking.

"We will avenge you no matter your answer.". Her voice was cold and she did not look a bit frail. Then she turned to him and sadness was written all over her face. "I only need to know if I should crush my hope before it grows until another disappointment would be like losing Eileen again."

Severus swallowed tightly. How did one answer without feeling like a fool and hurting oneself?

"I do not know." He forced himself to meet her eyes, as his heart beat like a hammer in his chest.

Surprisingly she smiled warmly at him.

"Abraxas told us you were more like my father than your mother or my husband. Blunt to the point of unsettling others." She paused, looking at him like… like Abraxas did sometimes. Like he was… precious.

"I will keep my hope for now."

She took his hand and kissed it lightly, briefly tightening her hold before letting him go and disappearing among the guests, leaving Severus in turmoil. He breathed profoundly, trying to clear his head without occluding. He had not learnt anything he did not already know. He had met his Grandmother. It changed nothing. He needed to find his friends and enjoy what remained of the day before going back to the Goblins.
Severus walked bristly, intent on avoiding any other painful talk and finding Evan and Jonathan. He had just glimpsed Evan's head when he noticed Regulus Black among a group of young people. Some he had never seen before, and their clothes made him think they were not from the United Kingdom. He wanted to go talk with his friends and relax. His talk with his Grand-Mother on top of his day had exhausted him. However, his talk with Narcissa had intrigued him enough he needed to talk with Regulus. He shook his head ruefully. She was good. His gaze hardened. As long as he was aware of it, it was not a problem.
Severus quietly walk among the guests to position himself in Regulus line of sight. He made small talk with one old couple who were business partner of his Mentor – how he despised talking of nothing with strangers, give him a potion to brew anytime- until he managed to catch Regulus' eyes. With a slight tilt of his head, the younger boy got the message and met him at the refreshments bar.

"Good evening Snape."

"Good evening Black. And it's Severus."

Regulus' eyes glinted.

"And it's Regulus."

Severus inclined his head.

"Should I congratulate you?" he asked, studying the new Black Heir with curiosity.

The younger boy laughed.

"You're the first one who doesn't assume I'm happy to be the Heir, aside Cista."

Severus raised an eyebrow slightly.

"What is the world coming to, if Slytherins are assuming …?"

Regulus sobered at once.

"Indeed, what is the world coming to…?" he trailed of, looking at Severus before looking him squarely in the eyes.

"You talked to Cista."

Severus shook his head.

"She talked to me."

"She can have that effect on people the first time." smiled Regulus.

"Only the first time?"

"Only when the subject is dear to her." He paused, looking at his feet before looking back at Severus. "I am not asking for what she did. I would just like you not to put me in the same pot as my family. To allow for some … correspondence between us."

Severus almost frown. Why were the Blacks so keen on writing to him suddenly?
Regulus sighed.

"Now I am the Heir," he almost spat out, "People are talking to me differently. My parents are expecting even more from me than before. Cista suggested I could use advice from someone … not as involved in politics." he finished hopefully.

"I am not a big conversationalist." said Severus. "Why didn't you ask someone from your year? Or someone like Jonathan?"

"I get enough conversation as it is. I need advice. And you don't lie. You're blunt. Some dislike it, but it is effective because it's different from what we Slytherins usually use to reach our goals. I find it refreshing."

Severus refrained from staring in disbelief. Narcissa had not lied when she had said Regulus had been watching him. It would not hurt to keep in touch with him and learn more about the younger Black, especially with Lord Voldemort's expectations.

"I'll be waiting for your letters." he answered with a nod.

Regulus briefly looked surprise before smiling widely at him.

"Thank you Severus. You won't regret it."

They parted way, Severus wondering how a wedding could bring so many questions.

"Talking with Blacks now Severus? I wonder if this Apprenticeship is really good for you."

Severus smiled as Jonathan and Evan joined him.

"That one might not be crazy. And Lucius did marry one, Jonathan."

"To the despair of many fair maidens all over Europe." said Jonathan drily.

Evan laughed.

"Is your little sister still disappointed for not marrying Lucius?"

"Narcissa did break a ten years old's dream." answered Jonathan. "I really don't understand why rich heirs from noble House are young girls princes Charming. I can understand music bands but heirs?"

Evan laughed harder.

"Come on Jonathan. Don't be sore because no girls are mooning at you yet."

Severus smirked.

"Evan, having a girlfriend for a week does not make you an expert in romantic advice."

"Better than not having had one at all." retorted Evan. He stopped as if hit by a thought. "How are you going to find one when you cannot see anyone except for your Master Severus?"

The though had not even crossed Severus mind. Living among Goblins would make it hard to meet someone. He realised he did not care.

"I am happy to focus on learning Evan." Ignoring his friend horrified look, he kept on. "I miss you, Lucius and Abraxas far more than any potential girlfriend." He almost said the last word with distaste.

Jonathan prevented Evan from arguing his point further.

"Come on Evan, Severus has the time to find someone. And you would do well to focus more on your studies instead of girls or fights."

Fights? Severus frowned as he looked at Evan in askance. His friends' letters had not mentioned more than the punctual fights between Slytherins and Gryffindors.

"I am not fighting that much," said Evan defensively. "And I might do better with my classes if my study partner was not too busy playing the perfect Prefect." he added, crossing his arms on his chest.

Jonathan sighed.

"Evan, you know I'm trying..."

"Lupin has far more time for his friends." interrupted Evan almost aggressively, under Severus stunned gaze.

"Lupin is not a true prefect." snapped Jonathan back. "I am not turning a blind eye on students infractions."

"Maybe sometimes you should, it would remove the stick that crawled up your ..."

Enough was enough.

"Stop it right now."

His friends looked back at him in surprise, abruptly reminded of his presence.

"I have no doubt we can find a compromise together." He said, stressing the last word with voice as forceful as he could make it.

They both looked at him sheepishly before nodding. Evan awkwardly bumped into Jonathan's left shoulder, who bumped back with a small smile. Severus bit back a sigh of relief. The situation was not as disastrous as he had feared for a second. Still… Severus made a point to spend the remaining of the ceremony with his two friends, although Lucius and Abraxas requisitioned him at times.
Abraxas brought him back to the room of grossing as the sun was rising again, and only left him go after giving him the longest hug. Frekka was waiting for him on the other side. She hit him lightly when he excused himself for being so late. Severus fell asleep with a smile on his lips.
