Each night before you go to bed, my baby
Whisper a little prayer for me, my baby, yeah
And tell all the stars above
This is dedicated to the one I love
Life could never be exactly like we want it to be
I could be satisfied knowing you love me, yeah
"Are you seriously just going to stand there and smirk at me?" Damon asked, glaring at Kenzie.
"Yes." She replied, not moving from where she stood just inside his house, staring out at him and Stefan.
"You know Elena is just going to let us in soon, right? Then you'll pay for all your smirking."
"Is there spanking involved?" She asked, her smirk turning into a grin at the scandalized look on Stefan's face. "I swear Stefan, it's so easy to get you going. Would you be blushing right now if you could blush?"
"Making my boyfriend blush?" Elena asked with a smile, coming up with the lawyer who nodded at them all before slipping away.
"He makes it so easy." Kenzie replied with a mock pout.
Elena shook her head. "Stefan, would you like to come inside my house?"
"I would love to." The younger brother entered, leaving Damon standing outside, looking between the three of them.
"What are we, 12?"
"One of us is." Elena shot back. "If I let you in, do you promise to obey the owner of this house?"
"No." Came Damon's petulant reply.
Kenzie let out a small snort of amusement. "Let me try, Elena. Damon, if you promise to obey her so she'll let you in, I'll let you spank me."
Beside her, Stefan and Elena sputtered and the teenager went beet red, causing Kenzie to giggle in amusement.
"Come in." Elena muttered, letting the other brother into the house.
"Ready?" Bonnie asked, joining them with Elena's jacket, she stopped, seeing the look on Elena and Stefan's faces. "What's wrong?"
"Just Redbird, making everyone uncomfortable, doing what she does best."
"What?" A confused Bonnie asked.
"You don't want to know." Kenzie replied with a grin. "Just know it had the word spanking involved."
The witches eyes widened comically. "You're right, I don't want to know, so maybe we should go."
"Wait, go where?" Stefan asked.
"To school." Elena replied.
"No no no no no." Damon protested. "We didn't create a safe house, just for you to leave it."
"Yeah guys, Klaus is out there, we know that." Stefan agreed with his brother.
"Right. But where?" Elena asked. "No one knows. Look, I really appreciate what you guys are doing. And I'll be able to sleep at night knowing that I'll be safe here, but I'm not going to be a prisoner."
"Besides, you keep Elena out of school, she'll have to repeat a year, trust me, that's no fun." Kenzie chimed in.
"You. Quiet." Damon said with a scowl before rolling his eyes at Elena's look. "You're way, Elena."
"Don't worry, I'm ready. If he shows his face, I can take him. Know how. " Bonnie reminded them all.
Elena nodded in agreement. "The way I see it, next to Bonnie is the safest place that I can be. Come on." She motioned to the other girls and Kenzie stepped forward, going up on her toes to place a soft kiss on Damon's lips.
"Don't worry." She whispered. "Anything happens, I'll totally scratch and kick them, I have a mean kick."
"I don't doubt that." Damon murmured, briefly cupping her cheek before pulling away.
Kenzie gave an almost shy smile before turning and leaving out the door, ignoring the questioning looks from the other girls. No one knew about the latest development between the couple and Kenzie wasn't about to enlighten them.
"Wait, I'm coming too." Stefan said, following after the girls.
"What was that?" Elena asked, once they were all in the car and on their way to school.
"Nothing." Kenzie simply replied, looking out the window and refusing to answer anymore questions.
When they arrived, everyone gathered their books and met up again in History, Elena carrying a piece of paper and holding it up to Stefan the moment they sat down. The vampire shook his head and Elena pouted before turning and holding it up for Kenzie and Bonnie to see, the latter nodding her head.
"That's tonight." Kenzie whispered. "How did we miss this?"
"Oh you know, the usual going on in our crazy lives." Bonnie said with a smile as Alaric entered the room.
"Hello class, what are we learning today?"
"With the decade dance tonight, we've been covering the sixties all week." a girl in the front of the class, cheerleader Dana, called out.
"Right. The sixties." Alaric agreed, his eyes pausing on Elena, a creepy smile coming to his face.
Kenzie's eyes narrowed as she glanced over at Elena who was looking down at her book, completely oblivious to the teacher's stare. She glanced at everybody else but no one was really paying attention so she looked back at Alaric who had turned his gaze towards her, his head cocked to the side in confusion. Kenzie pasted on a big smile for him before opening her book and looking down, pretending to take notes. Something was up and she knew she had to talk to Bonnie about it.
… … …
She didn't get a chance until lunchtime when she saw Bonnie and Jeremy sitting at a table, their heads bent close together. She made her way over to their table, catching the tail end of their conversation.
"Shh! We don't know that for certain. You promised to keep my secret, I'm trusting you. I'm going through with this, and if you tell anyone, I swear..."
"What, what are you going to do?" Jeremy asked with a glare.
"Sounds serious." Kenzie butted in, dropping her tray onto the table as she sat down. "And I'll let you get back to your fight in a minute but we need to talk."
"It's nothing." Bonnie told her with a glare at Jeremy. "What's up Kenzie?"
"It's not nothing." Jeremy snapped. "Tell her."
"You promised." Bonnie snapped right back.
"No, I want to hear what Kenzie has to say. She'll at least be honest about it." Jeremy turned to the little redhead. "If Bonnie does that Klaus spell, she will die."
Kenzie's eyebrows shot up as she slowly turned to look at Bonnie. "Is that true?"
"I don't know." Bonnie replied, still glaring at Jeremy.
"She has to harness the power of 100 dead witches, doing that will kill her."
"And I told you to have some faith in me." Bonnie softly said with a frown. "I can do this."
"You need to tell Elena." Jeremy pressed. "She needs to, right?" He directed the last part towards Kenzie who was looking between them both with a thoughtful frown on her face.
"Elena will shut down the plan if she knew but if the plan is shut down Elena dies."
Bonnie nodded. "Elena will die for sure. I can do this."
"I think you can too."
"What?" Jeremy exploded. "How can you say that? Is this because you still don't like Bonnie, so you're okay with her dying?"
Kenzie's cheeks flushed as her eyes narrowed. "That's complete and utter bullshit and you know it. I don't want either of them dying. Hell, I would even do it just to shut everyone up. If Bonnie thinks she can do it, then believe her. You have to, she needs you to. In the meantime, if there's another way, then why not see if we can find it, then everyone's fears will be laid to rest." She looked between the two, giving them a moment to mull it over before speaking again. "Now, the reason I tracked you down, it's Ric. Did he seem off to you guys at all?"
"I haven't seen him yet." Jeremy said.
"I wasn't really paying attention during history." Bonnie admitted.
"Maybe the thing with Jenna is getting to him." Jeremy suggested.
Kenzie shrugged. "I don't know, he was looking at Elena weird and the look he gave me after was like he was confused, kind of like when Kath-"
"Hey, Jer." Elena called out, joining them. "How you doing? Are you ok at the house alone with John?"
The younger Gilbert shrugged, grabbing his backpack and standing up. "It's not ideal."
"You haven't heard from Jenna, have you?"
"It looks like she's staying on campus. Look I'm- I'm late for class." He quickly left and Elena looked at the other two girls as she sat down.
"What's going on?"
"I told him he had to dress up tonight and he got all uptight." Bonnie said with a quick warning glance at Kenzie.
"Oh."
"Hey, Elena, there you are." Dana from history joined them. "Ok. This is going to sound freaky, but this totally hot guy just asked me to ask you if you're going to the dance tonight."
"Tell him she has a boyfriend." Bonnie told her with a roll of her eyes.
Dana just smiled. "You could at least meet him. He'll be at the dance tonight. Look for him. His name is Klaus."
All three girls that were sitting at the table froze before they all looked at each other in shock.
"What did you just say?" Elena whispered.
"His name's Klaus. I know the name's stupid, but I swear he's hot."
Bonnie and Kenzie looked around, trying to see someone they didn't recognize.
"Where is he then?" Kenzie asked. "I want to meet him."
Dana frowned. "I don't know."
"She's been compelled." Bonnie announced in disgust.
"But he wants to know if you'll save him the last dance. How cute is that?" The compelled girl left and Elena quickly gathered her stuff.
"I-I need to go and find Stefan."
She left as well, leaving Bonnie and Kenzie alone.
"Do you think he's still here?" Bonnie asked.
Kenzie nodded, leaning closer to the witch. "And I don't think Dana is the only one he got to."
… … …
Everyone gathered in the Salvatore house after school to talk about what had happened at lunch time and trying to figure out what to do that night. Damon was all for going to the dance and finding him but Stefan countered that with not knowing what the hell Klaus looked like. He easily had compelled someone at school, who's to say he wouldn't do it again?
Kenzie looked up from the box of clothes she was rummaging through, wondering if now would be a good time to voice her suspicions. A knock sounded at the door and everyone looked towards it.
"It's Ric." Damon announced and Kenzie's eyes slightly widened as she looked at Bonnie, the two girls silently communicating before she turned back to look down at the box, hoping to find something for the dance that night.
"Sorry I'm late." Alaric announced.
"Hey, I need you to put me down as a chaperone at the dance tonight. Klaus made his first move." Damon told him.
"Ok, so we find him and then what, hmm? What's our plan of attack?" Elena asked.
"Me." Bonnie supplied, causing Kenzie to momentarily freeze as she glanced at the witch. "I'm the plan. He has no idea how much power I can channel. If you can find him, I can kill him."
"That's not going to be that easy. I mean, he is the biggest, baddest vampire around." Alaric reminded them all.
"Alaric has a point, I mean what if he-"
Kenzie's head shot up in time to see Bonnie lifting a hand and Damon flying across the room. The redhead forced herself to stay where she was as Damon sat up.
"Well, I'm impressed." Stefan announced, a note of amusement in his voice.
"It doesn't matter if he's an Original. I can take down anyone who comes at me." Bonnie moved closer to Elena to look into her friends eyes. "I can kill him, Elena. I know I can."
Kenzie held up a dress, pretending to look at it as she looked over at Alaric, noticing the look on his face. He looked up just then, noticing she was staring and she immediately put on her fake smile.
"How about this one?" She asked referring to the dress.
Alaric stepped closer to her as he looked at the dress. "Looking for something for tonight? In the midst of everything going on?" He quietly asked her.
She only shrugged, lowering her voice as Bonnie kept talking to Elena and Stefan. "You know me Alaric, I'm a simple human girl amongst all the supernatural's, compelled to be okay with everything, right?"
"Yes, yes, of course." He replied with a furrowed brow as he turned back to the others.
Damon walked over to her, having heard their conversation. "What was-"
She placed a finger against his lips, dropping the dress she was holding back into the box. "Well, since none of this means anything to me, I'm going to take Damon and go have sex, see you at the dance." She grabbed Damon's hand, sending Bonnie a meaningful look as she pulled him out of the room and to his bedroom.
"You know Ric knows you're not compelled, right?" he asked after she had closed the door behind them.
She raised an eyebrow. "Alaric does know, that was a test, he failed miserably."
"What the hell is going on?" Damon demanded to know.
Kenzie went into the bathroom, to get ready for the night, leaving Damon to follow her as she stood in front of the mirror brushing out her long red hair. "I think I know who compelled Dana. Ric did, or rather whoever the hell is possessing Ric, which I'm guessing is Klaus."
"And you came to this conclusion how?"
She put down the brush, pulling her hair to one side as she began to braid it. "I pay attention. Not to say everyone else doesn't but my whole MO is watching people closely. I watch them to learn what I have to in case I need to use or manipulate them at some point in time. Ric was acting weird the moment he stepped into class. The way he looked at Elena was creepy enough, the way he looked at me right after, was the exact same way Katherine looked at me when she first met me. She recognized me but at the same time didn't have a clue who I was. Now why would Ric look at me like that, he knows me, right? Ric does, Klaus, not so much but he would look at me that way if he, say had a relative of mine and noticed just how similar we looked."
Damon stared at her in admiration. "you have no idea how hot that is."
She smiled at him in the mirror before letting out a small squeal as he grabbed her and spun her around so she was sitting on the counter of the bathroom. He pulled her to the edge of it as he stepped in between her legs.
"I like that you're a little evil." He whispered, to which she rolled her eyes.
"Don't talk like this is new news for you." She wrapped her legs around his waist as her arms looped around her neck, their foreheads now touching.
"There's more you should know." She whispered. "Bonnie thinks she can take out Klaus but there's a good chance it would kill her."
"And you think I care, why?"
She shrugged, pulling back a little to see his face before she spoke again. "Because if she dies going up against Klaus in Ric's body, who's to say he won't jump into the next available body and we'll be back where we started, plus, Elena would be heartbroken if she lost Bonnie, is that what you want?"
"And you think I really care how poor little Elena's heart is?"
Kenzie could only smirk as she raised an eyebrow. "I don't know, do you?"
He let out a small snort. "No."
"Bonnie's our best chance Damon, and in order for that to happen, we need her kept alive. We need a plan."
He grumbled about her being so level headed and she stuck out her tongue at him before leaning closer to kiss him.
"Kenzie?" Elena called, pushing open the door to the bathroom. Her face went bright red as she took in their position.
"What's up?" Kenzie asked, not removing her legs or arms from around Damon.
"I- uh- found some stuff for us to wear." Elena stuttered, holding up a short yellow and white dress. "I found that twiggy dress for you that you were looking for earlier."
"Thanks." Kenzie cried, untangling herself from Damon and jumping off the counter, grabbing the dress from Elena and holding it up to herself. "How does it look?"
"It suits you." Elena replied. "I'm just going to get ready, I'll see you later."
She quickly left and Kenzie turned back to Damon with a raised eyebrow. "Is it just me or does she seemed more bothered than usual by our compromising position."
"She's just worried Klaus is going to find her."
"If she only knew."
… … …
They were the last to arrive out of their group of friends, more than likely because Damon was proving to be quite the distraction while Kenzie tried to get ready.
They entered the gym, Kenzie's hand held firmly in Damon's as he weaved his way through the crowd towards his brother. He couldn't help but notice the admiring looks sent his way by the female population, nor did he miss how Kenzie moved closer to him, growling at the girls. His little Redbird was fierce and a total hottie if the stupid high school boys sending looks her way was any indication. They could look as much as he hated it but one finger and he would rip their fingers off one by one and force them down their throats.
"You think you're growling scares them?" Damon asked, sounding amused.
"Well I'd like to see them try and lay a finger on you because I have no problem ripping out handfuls of their hair." The last part was directed towards some girl she didn't recognize who had just placed a hand on Damon's arm. She removed her hand, seeing the dangerous look in the petite redhead's eyes.
Damon chuckled as they reached Stefan, Elena, Bonnie and Jeremy, all four looking down at the clasped hands in amusement but Kenzie ignored them as a slow song began to play and she tugged on Damon's hand pulling him out to the dance floor.
"And what makes you think I want to dance?" He asked, the amusement still in his voice.
"Because when we dance, it's magic." She replied with a grin. "Remember?"
He smirked, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close. "This song annoyed the fuck out of me when it came out. Probably because it came out in the early 60's then again towards the end."
While I'm far away from you my baby
I know it's hard for you my baby
Because it's hard for me my baby
And the darkest hour is just before dawn
"Wasn't feeling the mushiness then?" She teased.
"You get the mopey hippies and they just weren't as fun to feed off of."
She laughed as he dipped her.
If there's one thing I want you to do especially for me
Then it's something that everybody needs
Each night before you go to bed my baby
Whisper a little prayer for me my baby
The music abruptly stopped and the couple looked towards the stage where Dana had stepped up to the mic.
"That's her." Kenzie hissed. "Can you see Ric?"
Damon glanced around, his eyes finally resting on the taller man. "Yup."
"Watch him."
"Thanks for being here, everybody." Everyone began to clap, Dana clapping along with them. "We have a special shout-out tonight. This is for Elena, from Klaus."
The music volume rose again and Kenzie shook her head at the mind games Klaus was no doubt pushing at.
And tell all the stars up above,
This is dedicated to the one I love.
"That bastard." Damon muttered. "He's smiling, there's a huge shit eating grin on his face."
"We should talk to Bonnie. Do not tell anyone, we can't have anyone knowing."
"Good idea. It's a party, let's blend and continue playing dumb."
He pulled her into his arms, gliding them over to Bonnie and Jeremy. The latter looking very distressed and super unhappy.
"nice dedication." Damon noted.
"He knows." Kenzie told her, "And someone was looking all to smug during that."
"What are you talking about?" Jeremy asked, looking at the other couple.
The two girls exchanged looks, Bonnie giving an almost imperceptible shake of her head.
"Just Damon being Damon." Kenzie replied. "Bonnie, I'm stealing your date for a dance."
Damon spun her away from him into Jeremy's arms and she turned the boy so he was facing away from Bonnie and Damon who had moved off to talk strategy while they danced.
They were quiet for awhile as they danced, until Jeremy couldn't take it anymore. "Kenzie, there's something more going on, isn't there and you know, don't you?" Jeremy demanded.
She glanced around making sure no one that could hear was listening in before leaning closer to him. "Do you trust me?"
"Well, yeah." He replied with no hesitation. "You don't bullshit me Kenz."
"And I'm not now but just trust me, okay? I'll explain when I can."
He immediately dropped his hands. "So you're just going to leave me in the dark."
"I can't tell you anything if there's nothing to tell yet." She calmly replied.
"Forget it." He replied in disgust, stomping away from her.
Kenzie sighed and turned around, right into Stefan's arms.
"Whoa, hi."
He smiled at her. "Hello Kenzie. My brother's dancing with Elena so I thought I'd steal his date. I must say I'm surprised about that."
"How so? You know how we are."
"How you were." He corrected her. "My brother is in love with you, isn't he?"
Kenzie looked past him to see Damon rolling his eyes at her, causing her to giggle. "Shouldn't you be asking him?"
"He never gives me a straight answer."
"And I do?" She shot back with a grin.
"Have you guys seen Jeremy?" Elena asked, coming up to them. "He stormed past me a few minutes ago, wouldn't tell me what's going on."
"I'll go find out." Stefan replied, leaving to find the teen.
"You look really great." Elena told her as Damon came up behind her, tugging on her Twiggy like braid.
"Thanks so do you." She replied as an upbeat song began to play and he pulled her into another dance. "What about Elena?" She asked with a laugh.
"I'm going to go talk to Caroline." The brunette assured them.
Damon and Kenzie continued dancing, seemingly oblivious to everything going on around them but Kenzie knew Damon was very aware of everything around them. He periodically pulled her closer to whisper their plans in her ear while at the same time making it look as if he was being flirty. At one point he grabbed her arm and she followed his gaze to see Elena pulling Bonnie away, the witch sending the two a meaningful look as Stefan came up to them.
"Tell me neither of you knew about Bonnie's suicide mission."
Kenzie put on her most innocent face. "Bonnie isn't on a suicide mission."
"Jeremy told me everything."
Damon stilled behind her but Kenzie kept her composure. "Everything that he knew. Bonnie isn't on a suicide mission."
"Then what's going on?" He asked, frustrated. "You guys can't go off and make your stupid little plans and not tell the rest of us what's going on. You promised no more secrets."
"I promised no such thing." Kenzie replied. "But if you're so worried, was it smart letting the two girls go off on their own?"
Stefan looked behind him and softly swore. "We're all scattered, we need to find the others, come on."
He led the way out into the hallway, turning towards the sound of a scuffle. The two vampires charged forward when they realized it was Jeremy getting the crap beat out of him by a group of guys.
"Hey, idiots." Damon called.
A couple of the guys looked up and Kenzie yelled for Damon to move, pushing him out of the way as a crossbow was raised and a bolt released, hitting her square in the hand. She let out a scream as Damon grabbed her, pushing her up against a locker and out of the way from everyone. "You stupid stupid girl, what were you thinking?"
"I don't. I just react when it comes to you." She said with gritted teeth.
"Stay here." He rushed into the fray, grabbing one of the guys and getting ready to break his neck when his brother yelled for him to stop.
"Don't, he's compelled."
"So?" Damon snapped.
"So the whole thing is a distraction. Go find Bonnie and Elena, I got this."
"Red?" Damon looked towards her and she motioned for him to go.
He took off and Stefan knocked the last guy unconscious before checking on Jeremy who was a little beat up then moving to Kenzie, who was slumped against a locker looking a little pale.
"Here." He said, holding out his hand for hers. She placed it into his hand, whimpering a little as he looked at it. He let go, ripping off a piece of his shirt before grabbing her hand again.
"Maybe the question I should have been asking was, are you in love with my brother?"
"Very much so." She softly replied, not looking up as he removed the bolt and took the piece of shirt, wrapping it tight around the wound.
He didn't comment on her confession, knowing now was not really the time. "You should be okay until we have this all sorted out. Stay with Jeremy, okay?"
She nodded and he took off after his brother, Kenzie dropping to her knees beside the fallen teen.
"Jer?"
"Just go away." He mumbled struggling to sit up.
She rolled her eyes. "I couldn't very well tell you what was going on in there so just shut up and listen, okay?"
He looked at her suspiciously before nodding and Kenzie began to tell them about their plan.
… … …
