Adaline Greenewood – District 12
Adaline sat silently in a tree right past the fence that borders District 12. She loved to sit up here and watch the sun rise after gathering roots and plants early in the morning. Her black hair hung around her, helping to hide her from prying eyes, and if one were to really look, they might be able to see her sitting there. Adaline was very good at hiding. Her unmemorable appearance and her small frame made it easy to slip into the shadows. This became very useful around the time she turned 11. Her father, a merchant at the time, fell ill. He had a stroke, and has been bed ridden ever since. He needed a lot of rest, so Adaline tended to sneak around the house on silent feet, like a shadow, so she wouldn't disrupt his sleep.
Suddenly a twig snapped, causing Adaline to whip her head around. Standing a few feet from the tree she sat in was a huge stag. Its antlers brushed the bottom leaves of the trees and it stood proudly before her, head held high. Its eyes were wary and she knew that one move and he would take off through the forest. They sat there, staring into each other's eyes for minutes, maybe hours, Adaline lost track of time. What goes through a stag's mind when he sees a human? Is he disgusted by our close mindedness? By our sickening abuse? Our stone cold hearts? Don't worry.. I hate humans too… In the distance a bell rang, signaling that it was time to gather for the reaping. Adaline blinked and looked up, noticing that the sun had warmed the bark of her tree. How long was I sitting here? Feet hitting the cushioned forest floor, Adaline headed back toward home with her bag of gathered roots and various plants. The stag took off in the opposite direction.
The reaping was crowded and silent as usual. Adaline slipped into her usual spot at the back of her age group. This year it was the 16 year olds she was standing with. Just a couple more years and she wouldn't have to deal with the nerves and fear any more. Butterflies fluttered in her stomach and her olive skin had a clammy look to it. Too many people gathered for such a horrible reason. The escort for District 12 was never happy with them. She pretended to be, even if it was just for the cameras. They didn't cheer and applaud like District 2 or 4. They stood and watched in grim silence as she picked the names of their children who would surely be sent off to their death. Her nails were always disgustingly long and fake as she plucked a name from the boys Reaping ball. Some kid named Aaron was chosen. Then, out of nowhere, a blonde boy volunteered. Everyone turned to look at him. He marched up to the stage with fear and determination on his face. He looked young, 13, maybe 14. What reason would a boy like him have for volunteering?
Adaline sat and did nothing but think while the boy introduced himself and the escort picked the second name. This was the first time someone had volunteered for District 12 since The Great Rebellion.
"Adaline Greenewood." You know that feeling of blood rushing to your head so quickly that you can't hear? You lose track of time and you don't know if you have fallen over or if you are about to. Everything is spinning like you just dropped acid, colours blending together, nothing making sense. Then everything rushes back and it turns out that you've only been standing there for a few seconds. Adaline jerked back to reality, only stumbling back a step or two before regaining her composer. I can't let them know how much they scare me. They can't know what power they have over me.
Adaline arranged her face into what she hoped was blank and walked calmly up to the stage. All of the eyes on her made her skin crawl and she wanted to shrink back into the shadows where she was safe, but she kept her chin up and her face blank as she stood before the people of District 12.
