'There something wrong Celia? You seem a bit off tonight?'
Celia leaned against the shiny stainless steel bar and sighed as she looked at Jason who seemed pretty concerned about her. He was right though, she was feeling a bit off. Like something wasn't quite right, but she had no idea what.
'Jason, you know when, like…' Celia paused as she was having difficulty trying to vocalise her thoughts. 'Hmm do you ever get a sense of… a sense of, doom sometimes?'
Jason looked at Celia as she tried to comprehend what she was trying to say.
'Doom? I'm not sure if I get you.' He replied. Celia rested her elbows on the cold shiny surface behind her as she slouched down a bit further.
'Doom, y'know. Like something bad's gonna happen, you feel it in the pit of your stomach and I dunno I guess it makes you feel uneasy.'
Jason pondered for a while before he figured out what Celia was trying to say.
'I guess I understand. I know whenever my mom calls me and leaves me a bunch of voicemails one after the other with no details I get a bit worried. Like that?' Jason asked.
'Something like that. But more than just worry. A full on sense of foreboding.' Celia replied. Jason just looked at her again for a moment before he spoke.
'Celia why don't you go ask Charlie for a break or something? Go out back, have a smoke and chill.'
'That sounds like a good idea.' Celia sighed with a hint of a smile. 'I'll go now, not like we're busy or anything.' She chuckled.
Celia made her way from the bar to the manager's office past the kitchens. She tapped on the office door waiting for Charlie to tell her to come in when a second later, the door swung open. Charlie was sat in his chair in front of his computer and had reached over to open the door.
'What's up Celia?' The older man asked her.
'You mind if I take ten minutes? I'm not feeling all that great Boss.' Celia asked as she leant on the door frame.
'Do you feel sick? If you're not feeling well Celia I'd rather you go home and res…'
'It's not that boss I don't feel ill or anything it's just…' Celia stopped. Charlie noticed she wasn't in her usual cheery, chatty mood so he beckoned her in to the office and pointed at the extra chair he had at the side of his desk where Celia graciously sat.
'C'mon, there's something bothering you that's not right.' Charlie said. 'You've not been yourself today.'
'I'm having a hard time trying to concentrate at the moment.' Celia said as she shook her head. 'I've just been trying to explain to Jason that feeling of foreboding that happens sometimes. I don't think he quite understood.'
'I know what you mean. Something's happened and you think it's gonna come back ten times worse.' Charlie said to Celia. She gave a half smile and nodded her head.
'Well it's not like we're busy tonight, why don't you go home like I said and do whatever you need to do to put your mind at rest eh? But seeing as it's you you'll want to finish your shift so, how about you go take a break then?'
'You know me too well Charlie.' Celia chuckled.
'Well I can't have my best employee all of a dither now can I? Go on, got take fifteen minutes or something.'
'Thanks boss.'
Celia left Charlie in his office and made her way in to the staff room where she collected her coat and poured herself a mug off coffee from the machine that was sat on the countertop in the corner. She could have boiled the kettle and made herself a cup of tea but she really couldn't be bothered, so coffee it was. Celia pulled on her coat, grabbed her mug and made her way out in to the back service yard through the delivery door of Charlie's. Celia leant herself up against the wall underneath the backdoor light and rested her mug on the lid of the huge trade refuse bin that belonged to Charlie's. Celia then reached in to her pocket and pulled out her cigarettes; expertly picking one out of the pack with her lips and lighting it with the bright purple disposable lighter that seemed to live in her coat pocket. She inhaled the smoke and blew it back out in-between taking sips of her hot coffee which warmed her up in the chilly Chicago night. Celia had nearly finished smoking her cigarette when her phone rang. Not her ancient Nokia but the shiny black smartphone Aiden had given her. She took it out of her coat pocket and looked at the screen as she pressed her thumb on the green "answer" button.
'Hello?' Celia mumbled in to the phone as she took the last drag on her smoke before throwing the butt end on to the ground and standing on it with her right boot. She glanced around herself thinking she heard something shuffling around in the service yard.
'I was wondering where you were.' Said the voice from Celia's phone, but she also heard it in her right ear simultaneously. She jumped as she saw a figure step out of the darkness next to her and held her free arm up with her fist balled ready to punch whoever it was. As the figure stepped in to the light, she saw that it was Aiden; it must have been him she heard shuffling around. Aiden grinned as he put his own phone back in to his pocket as Celia hung up the phone call.
'Aiden one of these days I'm seriously gonna hurt you next time you sneak up on me like that!' Celia screeched as she shook her phone at Aiden. She shook her head and put her phone back in to her coat pocket. She then grabbed her coffee mug off the refuse bin and took a huge gulp from it. 'So what brings you to my gorgeous, dingy alleyway Mister Pearce?' Celia said jokingly.
'Nothing much really. I was hoping for a pint.' Aiden grinned. 'And a chat.'
'Well I don't finish work for a while. Why didn't you wait inside?' Celia asked.
'I wanted to talk to you away from anybody who may be listening. I've heard a few things that you may want to know about.'
'Like?'
'Old Man Sorenson.'
'Shit.' Celia cursed. 'What have you heard?'
'Just rumours, but you better be careful and keep an eye on Corrina.'
'Tell me Aiden, what are these rumours?' Celia asked him, she was getting a little impatient now.
'It seems that some acquaintances of Old Man Sorenson and some of Shaun's friends found out that he was arrested for beating your sister. It's not sitting well with any of them, especially as the boy is studying to become a lawyer.' Aiden told Celia.
'Corrie never pressed charges though.' Celia said. 'Why would there be a problem? It doesn't make any sense.'
'Hmm you know what the Old Man's like, he's got his fingers in so many illegal pies he doesn't want any kind of attention drawing to him by any means. Besides, Shaun's supposed to be in on everything he's the heir to the Sorenson throne.'
Celia sighed. She knew something bad was brewing and Aiden had just pretty much confirmed it for her. Old Man Sorenson was a nasty piece of work and Aiden was right in saying that he wouldn't want any attention bringing to him at all; especially as he was one of the most crooked criminal lawyers in all of Chicago. He had gotten so many criminals and mobsters off from huge prison sentences that he had earned the nickname "Mr. Loophole." So of course, if it got back to the University that Shaun attended that he had been arrested for beating a woman there was a chance of him getting booted out. Though this was the first time Celia had ever heard of Shaun doing something like that, she knew that he was crazy enough to have done other stuff before and probably never have charges made against him or be acquitted.
'Aiden, could you find out if Shaun has a past for me? I get the impression that he's one of those creepy stalkerish types. Corrie's even been staying round at mums with Lucy in case Shaun ever came back to her apartment.' Celia said.
'I can do that.' Said Aiden.
'Thanks. I want to have something against the fucker if he starts pestering Corrie. She's gone through too much already this year I don't want her living in fear from some idiot fucking ex-boyfriend that she can't get a restraining order against just because his dad is some supposed shit-hot crooked "criminal" lawyer.' Celia rambled, even doing finger-quotes when she said criminal. She was winding herself up now.
'I'll get the info for you.'
'Thanks Aiden.' Celia smiled at him. She then remembered she still had coffee in her mug so she downed what she had left. 'Ugh I better get back to work for the last ninety minutes.' Celia continued as she shuffled her way to the door.
'I'll come in now, seeing as we've had our chat. A Pint sounds good, maybe some food.' Aiden said as he followed Celia to the back door.
'Hey you!' Celia exclaimed as he stopped and turned around, noticing that Aiden was following her in. 'You can use the front door ya weirdo this yard's supposed to be secure!' Celia put her right hand on Aiden's chest and gently pushed him in back toward the tall fence he must have climbed over to get in. Aiden just grinned at her and ran toward the fence. Celia heard him scuffling over. She just shook her head as she made her way back inside.
