Chapter Title inspired by "We Found Love" by Calvin Harris feat. Rhianna
After dinner, Klaus brought them to one of his favorite night clubs, which Caroline ethusiastically supported. She needed a drink after dinner with Klaus. So, they were all standing around the dim club as music blasted from the DJ and crowds of people danced along to the pulsating beat.
"Who is that?!" Bonnie glanced in Caroline's direction, noticing her best friend's gape of shock, so she followed Caroline's line of focus. A devastatingly bright, handsome smile soon greeted her, and she visibly deflated. Marcel. This night kept getting worse.
Kai also looked in Marcel's direction and sensed Bonnie's discomfort at her best friend's eager curiosity. Sliding both arms around Bonnie's waist and pulling her body against him, he leaned down to peck his lips against Bonnie's hairline before answering. "That's Marcel. Klaus' protégé." He made eye contact with the vampire and offered a friendly nod in greeting.
Bonnie clutched onto Kai's arms as reveling in the comfort she felt being in his protective embrace, especially since her anxiety level lingered dangerously close to severe panic. "More like Klaus 2.0. As if there could be anything worse."
Caroline, unable to stop staring at the charismatic vampire, responded. "Whatever—he is gorgeous." A dreamy sigh escaped her glossed lips as she turned her full attention to him.
Bonnie stared at her best friend, horrified by Caroline's infatuation with Marcel. She knew Caroline since kindergarten, and right now the blonde had a serious case of the Caroline signature "boy crazy heart eyes." She felt Kai stroke her arm, trying to ease her tension; she acknowledged his effort by grabbing his hand splayed across her stomach and linking their fingers together. She remained focused on Caroline though, since her dread wouldn't let her do otherwise. "Caroline, please don't try to send Klaus a message by flirting with that guy. He's dangerous."
Caroline tore her gaze away from Marcel to meet Bonnie's concerned expression. "Bon, I'm fine. You know I can take care of myself." She stepped closer to Bonnie and hugged her—plus Kai by default—and then gave them both a reassuring smile. "Stop worrying. It's not good for you!" She playfully pointed her finger at Bonnie, mimicking a scolding parent. "Make sure she does not stress out," Caroline directed her comment to Kai who nodded his head as a promise before she backed away just in time to run into Marcel. The two exchanged smiles before walking over to the bar where Marcel seemed to make the offer of buying her a drink.
"This is not happening," Bonnie whined, while resting her head against Kai's chest. She closed her eyes, trying very hard to concentrate on normalizing her breathing.
"Hey," he left small kisses against her neck until she relaxed. "It's okay. Love you." He buried his face in her neck, prompting her to forget her stress for a moment and giggle.
"Kai," she scolded playfully. He kissed her harder. "We're in public."
"I agree," the accented voice barged in. "You two should get a room." He smirked and turned towards the dance floor. His jaw falling open. "It looks like you aren't the only two."
Bonnie glanced up, suddenly uneasy due to his threatening tone. She snapped her head forward immediately searching for Caroline, only to find her extremely close to Marcel who was whispering into her ear.
"Oh no…" Before Bonnie could blink, Klaus stormed through the crowd and literally all hell broke loose.
00000000
Kai, Bonnie, Klaus, and a stubbornly silent Caroline arrived at the mansion around 2:00 am after a dramatic end to the evening that forced both Bonnie and Kai to intervene and gift the raging vampires powerful aneurisms to stop them from murdering each other. Kai took Klaus and Bonnie took Marcel, but the strain of the magic and fighting completely drained her. Luckily, Kai stayed by her side and held her up or else she would have fallen on the ground from exhaustion. Her reaction sparked another fight—this time between Caroline and Klaus—which left Caroline screaming at him hysterically and then rushing over to Bonnie's side. Even 30 minutes later, Caroline's cheeks were still wet from her tears, and she wouldn't let go of Bonnie hand even when Bonnie was quickly revived and assured Caroline that she was fine.
Bonnie squeezed Caroline's hand, "Caroline. I'm okay." Once they stepped into the hallway, Bonnie hugged her best friend who still trembled from the fight.
Caroline fought off her tears, "I know. I'm just sorry you were pulled into our drama." She glared in Klaus' direction.
"Maybe if you weren't hitting on Marcel…" His comment lit a fire in Caroline's eyes, making her step forward to cause some sort of bodily harm. Luckily, Kai pulled her back in time.
"Okay," he announced cheerily, "Let's not start World War…what are we on? Five?" He glanced at Bonnie who shook her head.
"More like six," she replied. Kai nodded his head, while Caroline and Klaus glared at the couple.
"We get it," Caroline admitted. "I'm going to bed." She quickly hugged Bonnie and bumped fists with Kai—earning an exchange of confused looks from Bonnie and Klaus—before turning to speed up the stairs. Klaus just stared after her, his brow furrowed and his jaw clenched tightly. After a couple of minutes, he stalked up the stairs, mumbling an aggravated "good night" to Bonnie and Kai.
Bonnie relaxed after they were both out of sight—they seriously needed sleep. She felt Kai step closer, his arms circling her small frame. "You okay?"
She titled her head up to look at him, "I'll be better after I am buried under the covers and out." Kai chuckled at her answer, while bending down to grab her legs and lift her up into his arms bridal style.
"I think you've had enough excitement for today."
Bonnie held onto his neck, rolling her eyes. "More like enough for a lifetime. Those two are explosively dysfunctional."
Kai began to climb the stairs. "Oh good. So, we have passed the torch to them?"
"As if we are like that. I mean maybe in '94. Not now." She quieted down, her expression becoming serious. "We can't."
Kai glanced at her curiously, but he chose not to say anything until they reached their room. After he placed Bonnie on the floor, they both went their separate ways to get ready for bed. Bonnie finished first with her nighttime routine and Kai followed soon after. After 10 minutes, he exited the bathroom and saw her folding clothes in her suitcase; her shoulders were obviously tensed and he could immediately tell that she was still stressed over the chaotic night. He hated seeing her like that, especially since she already exhausted herself today when trying to break up the epic battle that almost went down at the New Orleans club. Crossing the room, Kai hugged Bonnie from behind and leaned forward until his chin rested against her shoulder.
"Baby," Kai cooed against her skin, leaving lingering kisses down her neck. "Don't be angry, okay? The night is over. Crisis is averted. Caroline is no longer planning her future wedding to Marcel." Kai broke out into a grin at the sound of Bonnie's low growl.
"Ugh," she scoffed. "Don't even put that image in my head." She felt Kai tug her waist gently and followed his lead by spinning around to face him. Before she could react, Kai had slid his hands underneath her thighs and gripped them firmly before picking her up and lacing her legs around his waist. "How about we conjure up a new image," he smirked at her blush and forcefully pressed his lips into hers for a deep kiss that led to the shedding of clothes, and Kai hovering on top of her. He dipped his head to nuzzle his nose against her own before settling his mouth on hers. He swiped his tongue inside her mouth, causing a soft moan to leave his mouth. He made no efforts to slow down, so the kisses escalated to deep, open mouth strokes that made Bonnie arch into him.
When she whimpered, she felt Kai's warmth disappear, prompting her eyes to open and look into his penetrating gaze. "What?" She heaved a long breath, desperately trying to regain some feeling in her lungs, but the effort was too soon, because Kai's next words stole her breath away. "Marry me." It wasn't a question but an urgent demand with a soft undertone of desperation lingering behind it.
"Mala—" Kai interrupted her with the quick, forceful pressure of his lips.
"Say my full name Bonster, then I won't wait for an answer before I take you." His words left searing heat on every available inch of her skin. He licked her bottom lip and bit it gently. "I love you so much. You're my universe...please say yes." He pressed his body snuggly against her, and the action jolted Bonnie's reaction.
She ran her fingers through his messy brown hair and laced his heavily stubble covered chin with sweet pecks. First, she needed to ease his anxiety and erase his fears. "I love you too." She laced their fingers together, allowing Kai to pin one arm against her head as he stroked her inner thigh with another.
"Is that a yes?" His finger trailed dangerously close to an incredibly sensitive area of her body, causing her to shut her eyes and try to regain control over this emotionally charged moment. Suddenly, the two tiny lives growing in her stomach urged her to vocalize her concerns.
"Can we trust you?" The words slipped out so easily that Bonnie had no idea the pronoun blunder happened. She could only focus on Kai's hurt expression.
"You still don't trust me?"
Bonnie ran a thumb over his quivering lip. "I didn't say that." She frowned. "Sweetheart..." The term of endearment felt so normal. This whole exchange was domestic. "We need to be realistic. Especially now with you being involved with the drama over here in New Orleans. You and I have something new to worry about...our children." She exhaled shakily as she watched Kai process her words. He stared at her for the longest time, frozen in place. Suddenly, he began to blink rapidly. His left hand unlocking his fingers from hers in order to grab the ring he gave to her for Christmas. Without a word, he slid the ring onto her opposite hand—specifically the left ring finger and moved his left hand down her body until it held her left thigh. Pushing it open, he settled all his weight on her and captured her lips in a warm kiss. Bonnie remembered the feeling of tears staining her cheeks, but she wasn't the one crying.
"You're pregnant?" He murmured these words against her lips before burying his face in the crook of her neck. "Bonnie..."
When Bonnie felt wetness against her neck, she brought her arms up to wrap them around Kai's shoulders, allowing her left hand to caress the back of his neck in a secure, gentle hold. "I am," she whispered in his ear, stroking his neck soothingly when she felt his body shake against her. "Kai..." She pressed her lips against his forehead as he sobbed quietly. The sounds of his cries devastated her—she'd never heard him cry and the sound paralyzed her with a cold, tingling fear that she'd never felt before. Amidst his sniffling, she heard him mutter something. "What is it, honey?" She ran her fingers through his hair, massaging his scalp comfortingly as she strained to hear what he was saying.
"I'd...never hurt..." He gasped for air, "Never. Not them."
Bonnie gripped him tighter, "Kai...I know you wouldn't." Guilt flooded her entire system—she never thought he would be this devastated at the idea of her not trusting him to be a father. Even though the fears and nightmares were very real, his reaction proved that he was just as scared of himself as she was. "I'm just…we really need to talk about this, because I can't take any risks now. Not with the possibility of innocent lives involved." She stroked his hair as his body shuddered. Kai. Please," she closed her eyes. In an instant all of his weight lifted, leaving her feeling cold and forcing her eyes to open and scan the room. She spotted him sitting up but hunched over with his head in his hands. The only sounds she heard were the heavy gasps of air he took to calm down. She slowly sat up, covering herself with the blanket for added warmth and comfort, and waited for him to say something.
"I don't blame you for being scared or hesitant. I mean how could you not with how I treated you…" he bit his lip and released a low growl. "I had no idea you would be capable of caring about me or even giving me the time of day—me this fucking lunatic and you this beautiful, kind person—I will never deserve you."
His words settled deep into heart, embedding the worst gut wrenching pain within her. "Kai," she whispered.
"No," he shut down her attempt to comfort him. "I don't deserve it Bonnie. I wouldn't blame you if you never wanted me near our own children. I mean, my father always said that I was a failure and a twisted, unworthy member of the Gemini coven. I was put in that prison world for a reason." He roughly scratched his scalp as if he were trying to tear skin away. "You need to keep them safe. I won't hurt them…I won't," he declared the words in a frazzled state of urgency as if he needed to convince himself of its truth.
Bonnie scooted closer to him, reaching over and clutching his bicep. "Malachai…stop it." She nuzzled her nose against his cheek. "Please, I don't want you to stay away. I love you, okay? I do. I'm sorry that I had to doubt you, but…" She clenched her teeth, restraining from any more comments that could hurt Kai. She had no idea how upset and guilty he would be by the news. His immediate reaction was to protect them from him. It broke her heart. She kissed his exposed shoulder before laying her head there. "We're going to do this together. I want us to do this together. We're a team now. I just think that we need to settle down for a bit. I mean I'd love it if you could come home." She felt his arm slip behind her back and his hand held her neck.
"Yes," he agreed. "Anything for you."
Bonnie smiled softly before adjusting herself so that she could sit on his lap and wrap her arms around his neck. She kissed him desperately, clutching onto him. "One more favor."
Kai leaned back to look in her eyes before kissing the tip of her nose. "Name it."
"I think we should go to therapy. Work out the obvious issues that we've never fully discussed. The trauma, hatred, and violence that we both want to forget happened but can never fully. You hurt me and I hurt you. We met each other already broken. We owe it to them to do it."
Kai processed her suggestion, his demeanor falling. His heartbroken expression worried her.
"What?" She pressed.
He shook his head, fixating his gaze on the opposing wall. "What if I can't be fixed, Bon? I've done horrible things and I've experienced the most intense feelings of self loathing and hatred against the world that I may be just damaged beyond repair."
Her hand cusped his chin, "Kai," she prompted softly. "You aren't damaged beyond repair. If I thought you were then I wouldn't have fallen in love with you, and I most definitely would not agree to marry you." It took a moment to realize that Bonnie just accepted his proposal.
"Bon?" He asked hopefully.
She kissed his cheek and rested her head on his shoulder. "Mmh," she sighed against his neck, affirming his hope.
A/N: AWWWW. Sorry for the late update, but at least I eventually get to it! Thank you all for being so patient and supportive. I hope you enjoy this addition!
