Her golden gown was bright as the sun as she stepped out of the castle and into the spacious garden. She walked over to the rose bush and looked up at the clear skies. There was a light breeze but the air was cold enough to form goosebumps on her arms. She bent down to smell the roses and brushed away the fallen stands of hair from her face. From the corner of her eyes she was able to see him standing by the shadows of the castle.
Catherine looked towards to where he was standing and smiled at him. She caught a quick glimpse of the hazel hair covering his arms and face before he backed away further into the darkness so that she could no longer see him from where she stood.
"Why are you hiding?" Her voice was gentle and kind as she slowly walked towards his direction. Since he came to the castle she'd only caught glimpses of him before he ran and hid away.
"Stay away," he grumbled in his huge gruff voice that echoed. "
"As you wish but before I take my leave, when you are ready I will be right here. Do not be afraid. No harm will come your way."
Catherine quickly woke up from her sleep and sat up in bed. It was the third straight night since they met, that she had a dream about the person or thing that saved her life down in the tunnel. The first night she dreamt about him saving her, just like how it happened at the subway tunnel earlier that day. The second night was similar except that he spoke to her but she could not remember what he said to her.
Tonight was completely different. She was having dreams of herself back in the castle and this time with the beast that saved her life instead of Vincent, who she still couldn't forget. What was it about the beast that made her dream of him every night.
She turned to her clock on the nightstand and it was only five in the morning. It was still too early for her to get up. She laid back down and closed her eyes, succumbing to sleep faster than she could even think about it. Her mind startwd to wander and immediately began to have another dream.
The subway station was empty except for the person lying on the platform. She couldn't see who it was since it's back was towards her. The clothing was dark and covered with dirt and grime. The person was likely homeless and just looking for shelter from the cold weather.
"Hello," she said as she stepped closer. "Are you okay?"
The body remained still and no answer ever came. She continued to walk towards the person and fearing that the person was dead, her heart started to race.
"I'm Detective Chandle. Do you need any help?" She tried once more to get an answer.
As she walked closer the person's jacket became more clearer. It was covered in dirt and blood. Underneath was something she recognized, camouflage. It was an Army jacket covered in blood and dirt.
Her eyes started to well up as she saw the holes on the back of the jacket. She knelt behind the body and rolled it over. His lifeless body rolled on his back and her vision started to blur the second ahead recognized who it was. His face was cold and blue as she stroked his cheeks with shaky hands.
"Vincent," she burst into a sob.
Her worst nightmare had come true. Vincent was dead and now there was proof. There was a moment of relief that he had been found but mostly sadness that he had been found dead by her. Fate was indeed cruel.
Catherine brushed his hair away from his forehead and traced his scar. "Vincent, I'm so sorry," she leaned down and kissed his cold cheek one final time. "I love you," she whispered and wiped her tears.
After calling for help she stayed with him but no one showed up, not even one person to ride the subway. She didn't want to leave him alone but she had to get someone so they can get his body out of the station. She eventually got up and turned away from his dead body. When she reached for her phone in her pocket she noticed a pair of bright blue eyes staring at her from the darkened tracks. He quickly drew back and disappeared into the tunnel.
"Wait! Stop!" she yelled as she placed her phone back into her pocket and jumped down to the tracks. She was taken aback when he stopped. Even in the darkness of the tunnel she could tell that he was different. "Do you know who he is?"
His blue eyes watched her intently as she came closer. He shook his head in reply.
"Did you bring him here?" She asked and continued to walk towards him.
He walked backwards with each step she took towards him and shrugged his shoulders in reply to her question. He couldn't seem to find his voice or the will to runaway from her though he knew it could be dangerous for him. He wasn't like others. It was the reason he lived in the long lost tunnels of the city.
"How did you know I was here?" She walked closer to him.
He walked further back and shrugged his shoulders again.
"Who are you?" She kept trying to get closer to him. "Wait. I won't hurt you, I promise. Just please..."
He stopped walking and waited for her. "Beast." he took a step closer towards her and minimized the gap between them.
There was something soothing about his voice though it was gruff. "Beast," she repeated his name.
He stroked her cheek and brushed the hair away from her eyes. "You're beautiful." He started to lean down and she closed her eyes when his face came closer.
The blaring sound of horns caused her to open her eyes and he immediately backed away. The bright lights of the train caused her to freeze in place and stare at it as it approached them.
"Let's go," he grabbed her hand and she started to run with him. He stopped when the train was too close, grabbed her by the waist and threw her against the wall as he covered her body with his, shielding her from the passing train then waited until the back of the train passed them. "I have to go," he quickly backed away and ran towards the tunnel where the train just came from.
His body quickly shot up from the mattress and his breath was short and ragged from the dream.
"Did you have another nightmare, Beast?" His friend asked. He had been looking after Beast since he got sick. His skin was much paler but his hair was as bright as the flames of the candles lighting the dim chamber.
Beast shook his head. "No Doc."
"You're fever has gone away but you still need to rest," Doc leaned against the wide brick arc that was the doorway to the Beast's open chamber.
Beast nodded his head and sat up straight. His body was still weak and he felt light headed.
"They're worried, Beast. They think she'll come down here with the rest of her men and take their homes away from them. This tunnels are all they have," Doc crossed his arms and looked around the room.
"Tell them there's no need to worry. Only we know these tunnels besides I'll be able to hear them if they ever try to search around the tunnels," Beast replied with confidence. The Beast within one year of coming to them had quickly become their leader. He was selfless and gave more to the people than what he actually had. He chose the smallest room and left it open for anyone to come in with their problems.
They offered him curtains to give him privacy but he refused. Once they put it up for him while he was away. He was thankful for their kind gesture but he removed the wire holding the curtains up and opened up his room again.
"I'll let them know," Doc replied.
"Doc."
"Yes, Beast.
"Do you think we'll ever remember what happened to us?" Beast asked.
"Truthfully, I'm not sure if we'll ever regain our memories. The people here saved me. They gave me the will to live. Do you remember anything?"
"I just remember waking up here and everything else is a blank."
"I was lucky enough to have found you when I did. You could have died from your stab wounds and if not from your wounds who knows what they would have done to you if someone else found you. This world is cruel, Beast. You must remember that the next time you're out in the tunnels. I would hate for you to become a lab experiment for scientists to poke and probe at their will.
Doc and the rest of their small community were like a family. They relied on each other.
"I'll be more careful next time."
"Get some rest Beast. I'll come back later to check up on you."
"Thanks, Doc." Beast laid his head back down on his pillow and closed his eyes. He quickly fell back asleep as he stared into her green eyes. fever or not, he was thankful to see her again even if it's just in his dreams.

Catherine sat up and wiped the tears from her face. She wasn't quite sure if it was a dream or a nightmare. Honestly, she really wasn't sure about anything anymore. Vincent was still missing and Beast, who saved her life shouldn't exist but he did. People would call her crazy if she told them about what she saw in the tunnel and who saved her. Thankfully she was able to think quickly and told them she found a small opening and managed to run there before the train. They never asked again what happened. They were all just thankful that they didn't lose a detective that morning.
She knew that Beast risked his life to save hers because she had lost her mind for a moment. He could have just left but instead he came back to save her. While his friend was scared he actually trusted her and she the same, after all he did save her life. Part of her was curious and wanted to see him again but the other part was scared to know what would happen if they met again. No matter how hard she tried to forget about that day in the tunnel or forget Beast, one thing always remained, he risked his life to save hers and she could never forget that.
