"Mom!" Charlotte whipped around quickly, knowing that voice all too well.
"Grace?" she called back. The young brown haired girl came running towards her and pulled her mother into a tight hug. "What's the matter Grace?"
"Mom…Mommy, I'm so sorry!" she sobbed. "I'm…I'm so, so sorry! I don't hate you! I could never hate you. You were right! I should've listened…I should've listened…"
"Calm down a minute, its okay. I know that you don't hate me. But can you sit down and tell me what happened?"
"I…I can try…"
"Hey Josh," Grace said timidly, he was walking away from his freak out at the barn.
"Yes, baby," he said looking at her kindly.
"I—I—Maybe you shouldn't yell at them like that. I think Sophia is alive too and—"
"I know what's best, Grace. I thought we talked about this," he said, his tone changing right away.
"Yeah, we did, and you said that we were going to leave…" Grace replied.
"Change of plans."
"What do you mean? What the hell, Josh?"
"Hey don't take the tone with me," he said.
"What are you, my father?"
"No, because you actually need to listen to me."
"I don't have to listen to—" She didn't see it coming; she did feel his large hand come across her face, however. After it did, she had trouble keeping her balance.
"Is this what you're going to do?" Grace asked through he tears.
"If you don't listen to me," he spat on the ground and stormed off.
As Grace recounted her story, Charlotte's anger was only fueled. She stood up and ran off to find that asshole.
"Mom!" Grace called after her. "Don't…"
"Try and stop me!" she shouted. It didn't take long for her to find Josh; he was standing near the barn with…with a gun. They weren't even allowed to have guns in camp. "You! I need to have a fucking word with you!"
"Why?" he asked.
"You think it's okay to put your hands on my daughter?" she came up to him and was within inches of him.
"I can do whatever the hell I want," he was tall—quite a few inches taller than Charlotte or even Shane. But, that wasn't going to stop her, she would be the one to get revenge on this awful, awful guy!
"No, you can't. Just because there's dead people walking around doesn't mean that you can hit my daughter!"
"Like I said you little bitch, I can do," he pushed her back by her shoulders. "Whatever I want."
"Don't you fucking touch me," Charlotte fired back. When he hand moved to push her away again, her own hand shot up and she slapped him across the face. He shoved her again, this time harder, hard enough for her to fall to the ground. She started to jump back up, but he put his foot on her shoulder to hold her to the ground.
"Stay down there, bitch," he said as he pulled out his hand gun and aimed it at her.
"What're you going to do? Shoot me? I'm a mother; do you know what will happen to you? Do you know what Daryl or even Shane will do to you if you do?"
"I don't give a shit," he said, moving the gun closer to her head and cocking it.
"Hey dad, have you seen mom?" Aidan asked as he and Carl were walking around the farm a bit.
"No I haven't bud, but I can help ya find her," Shane offered. "Whatcha need her for?"
"I wanted to ask her something…"
"Maybe ya can ask me?"
"No, it has to be mom."
"Alright, let's go find her," Shane led the way towards Daryl's tent, thinking that she was probably over there. But, all he found was Daryl by himself, sharpening a knife or something. "You seen Charlotte?" Shane asked.
"Not since this mornin'," he replied. "Ya can't find her?"
"Aidan's lookin' for 'er. I was jus' helpin'."
"I'll help too," Daryl wanted to talk to her anyway. Shane nodded and led the way back towards Charlotte's tent. "Char? Ya over here?" he asked.
"Daddy?" Grace's voice came from inside the tent. She walked out with a black eye and a swollen cheek.
"What the hell happened to you?" he grabbed her face and tried to examine the large bruise.
"Mom went to go take care of it…"
"Where?" Shane asked.
"Have you checked the barn?"
Nobody said anything; they just took off running to the barn. If someone had hit Grace, Charlotte could possibly be in trouble too. "Aidan, Carl, go back to Charlotte's tent an' sit with Grace—now," Shane commanded.
"Daddy—"
"Aidan, I said now."
The two boys ran off and Shane started to lunge towards Josh—he was holding Charlotte down with a gun to her head, but Daryl grabbed his arm.
"We don' wanna scare 'im an' make 'im shoot her," Daryl said. "Ya go try an' talk to 'im, I'll go 'round an' put my bow to 'is head." Shane nodded slowly, working the plan out in his own head.
"Hey man, don' shoot 'er," Shane said, walking up slowly.
"What the hell are you doing over here?"
After just one look at Josh, Shane knew that the boy had lost it. "I'm just over here to make sure that there's a watch at the barn, we all got people we gotta protect," Shane said. He had to think on his toes and make things sound believable.
"Well there is, I—"
"Move yer gun 'way from 'er," Daryl's gruff voice came from behind Josh. "If ya don' I'll shoot ya," he held his crossbow up to the teenager's head.
Josh's gun wavered just long enough for Charlotte to pull his leg out from under him and make him fall on the solid ground. She pulled out her knife and stabbed it in his leg to keep him from reaching for his own gun.
"Fuck!" Josh screamed as he grabbed his leg. Shane moved to restrain Josh as Daryl came to Charlotte's side.
"Ya okay?" he asked, holding out his hand to help her up, she accepted it and got to her feet.
"I—I guess so, but that asshole over there needs to pay," she spat to the ground.
"How's yer shoulder?" he asked, referring to the fact that Josh had been practically standing on it.
"I'll be okay," she replied. He reached out and gingerly touched her collarbone where Josh's shoe had been; when she winced he pulled away. "Thank you…" she sighed. "You saved my life, you and Shane both…" In that moment, she couldn't help herself but to hug Daryl; she wrapped her arms around his middle and rested her head on his shoulder. He surprisingly hugged her back; Daryl had been worried about Charlotte—a lot actually. He pressed a light kiss to her head.
"C'mon, let's go back to my tent," Daryl suggested, as she sobbed.
"In a minute, I need to thank Shane," she said, wiping her eyes and pulled away.
"I'll be over here," he said. She looked at him and gave him a slight smile and pressed a kiss to his lips before walking over to where Shane was and somehow she had missed the part where Shane beat up and knocked out Josh. The younger boy's face was bloodied and bruised.
"I want 'im outa this Goddamn camp, he ain't stayin' here," Shane mumbled.
"Me too. He laid his hands on my and Grace. Thank you for all of this."
"Don't mention it," he gave her a half smile. "Ya okay?"
"Yeah, do you need help or—?"
"No, go on, ya got Daryl waitin' for ya."
"Are you sure."
"Yeah," he nodded. She did too and walked back to Daryl's side. As they walked back, she looked over at him and caught him looking at down at hers with an unreadable look in his eyes.
"What?" she asked. He shook his hand and she found herself slipping her hand in his. He didn't pull away, like she expected him to, he contently held hands with her.
"I l—" Daryl stopped whatever he was saying and Charlotte looked up at him expectantly.
"What were you saying?" she asked.
"I like hangin' out with ya," he said, mentally kicking himself for almost saying something like that.
Though she didn't believe that was what he was really about to say, she nodded and squeezed his hand a little. "I like hanging out with you too."
"Dad, what are you doing with—"
"Not now, son. I gotta go find Rick," Shane said as he continued to drag Josh's unconscious body away from the barn. As he did so, all of the camp members came out and stood in shock of the sight before them.
