Hello everyone. Thank you for your reviews of the last chapter they made my day. You guys rock! I would also like to thank anyone who followed or favorited as well. This chapter was tough for me because I had to tie up some loose ends which turned out to be a little harder than I thought. I hope it makes sense, and I hope you like it.
Present Day
"Will you drive, please," Maura asked while clutching the box holding her memories of Gia.
"Yeah, of course, what's in the box," Jane asked as she took her keys out of her pocket and unlocked her car.
Maura smiled at Jane with an obvious hint of sadness. She sighed. "A wonderful chapter of my past."
When they were both in the car, Jane turned to Maura. "Enough with the vague answers, I'm not driving until you tell me what's going on with you."
Maura took a deep breath. "So, you know how I told you that while growing up I've had a couple of nannies..."
"Yeah I think I remember you mentioning that."
"Well this one nanny, Gia, and I were particularly close. I found out today that she died. This box contains a few of my memories of our time together," she started to take some of the items out of the box. "This was a Halloween costume she made for me."
Jane looked at the outfit and made a face. "What? Were you a librarian?"
Maura rolled her eyes. "No... I was Marie Curie, the famous Nobel Prize winning scientist."
Jane laughed, "Yeah, I was the Incredible Hulk."
Maura laughed a bit too. "I hope your mother took pictures, I'd love to see them." Next, Maura showed Jane the Manila envelope filled with letters. "When she went over seas we kept in touch through letters until I went to high school."
Jane looked at the letters, "Aw that's sweet."
Then, Maura pulled out the glass heart. "This is..."
"Holy Crap, is that what I think it is," Jane asked touching the piece in Maura's hand.
"Jane, be careful."
"Is this The Broken Heart piece by Gia Sparks? Of course you'd own her most famous piece."
"You're familiar with her work?"
"I knew her personally, before she was famous, she was my cousin Valerie's best friend," Jane bragged.
The mention of Valerie triggered a memory for Maura. "Oh my god," she covered her mouth.
"What?"
"Do you remember going bowling for Gia's birthday, when you were eight?"
Jane thought for a second and her eyes widened. She lightly tapped Maura's arm with the back of her hand. "You were the little girl that Gia was nannying!"
Maura nodded. "Can you believe that the first time we met was over thirty years ago?"
"And some how we found each other again, I guess it was meant to be."
Maura smiled. "I guess it was, and you know I never guess."
Jane laughed. "We're going to have to ice skate home because hell just froze over, Maura Isles said "I guess."
The two laughed together for a few moments until Jane stopped, remembering something.
"Ya know, I have spoken Valerie in over thirty years."
"Oh, no?"
"Yeah, her parents stopped talking to her when she came out. The last I heard she was living on the west coast." Jane shook her head. "I just don't know how a parent could stop talking to their child over something like that. I wish there was some way I could reconnect with her."
"Hope told me that she was in San Francisco for some time."
"How does Hope, know?"
"That's a whole other thing..." Maura glanced at her watch. "It's 5:30, I want to get there before it closes."
During the twenty minute drive to bakery, Maura mainly practiced what she was going to say to the twins, while Jane tried to calm her down telling Maura that she was "over thinking it."
/
As they approached the doors of the bakery Maura looked inside, it looked empty. She looked at her watch. "It's 5:50, do you think they might have closed early?"
Jane pointed to the open sign. "The sign and the lights suggest that they haven't, maybe they're just in the back or something." Jane looked at Maura. "Are you nervous?"
"Maybe a little," Maura responded making a hand gesture with her index finger and thumb with a half inch space between the two. "I mean, what if they don't like me."
"Okay, first of all, that's impossible. Second of all, if you're really that nervous, we don't have to go in, but I know you are curious and we're already here. Third of all you can't mention cupcakes to a pregnant woman and not deliver, so we are going in."
"Jane, you contradicted yourself, and you ended a sentence with a preposition..."
"I swear, I am so hungry right now, I will drag you in here if I have to," Jane interjected. "Listen, you don't have to say anything if you don't want to."
"Very well," Maura responded and the two entered.
Maura looked around and saw that the bakery was decorated with photos.
"Hello," Jane said loudly.
For a few seconds there was no response. Then at the same time, a girl popped up from under the counter as another came through a door that led to the kitchen.
"Hello and welcome to Double Trouble," they said in unison.
Maura gasped. They looked exactly like their mother, just as Hope had said. Maura remembered her conversation with Gia regarding children and these two were in fact Gia replicas.
The one smiled. "That's a popular response here, people often find our selection to be a bit overwhelming but don't worry, we're here to help. I am Audrey, and that's Emily. If you have any questions, just ask."
Maura composed herself, the cupcake selection, while vast and unique was not the reason for her reaction. "Yes, of course, would you tell us about them?"
Audrey began. "Let's see... right here on top we have our Double Chocolate Bacon Cupcake. It's a chocolate cupcake..."
"Sold," Jane responded loudly.
Emily smiled. "A woman who knows what she wants!"
Jane smiled back. "Two please."
Emily took two cupcakes from the display case and handed them to Jane while Audrey continued. "Next to that is our Carnival Cupcake, cotton candy with sprinkles, then we have our Rosy Cheeks Cupcake, made with rose water and a butter cream icing."
"Are those candied rose petals?"
Audrey smiled. "Why yes they are. You're the first person to recognize that. That's so cool."
Maura smiled back at Audrey, "they both look and sound just like her," she thought.
While looking at the case Maura was drawn to an especially unique looking cupcake on the second row. She pointed to it. "What about this one?"
Emily glanced over while giving Jane her change. "Is she pointing to the Broken Hearts Cupcake?"
Audrey smiled and looked at her sister. "Yup!"
"I knew it."
Audrey continued, "This is our most famous cupcake, we've sold three thousand in the month of February alone, it's a big Valentine's Day item. It's a Madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcake with a butter cream icing, topped with a chopped up strawberry fused back together in the shape of a heart, drizzled white chocolate, which we then brush with gold bakers dust."
"The inspiration for this cupcake comes from, the artist Gia Sparks most famous piece, that was displayed at one art show, then was never seen again," Emily said.
"She was our mother," Audrey added.
"That's beautiful," Maura responded, holding back her tears. She wanted to tell them who she was, she wanted to run out to the car and show them the piece that inspired the cupcake. She wanted to hug the both of them and tell them how wonderful their mother was and that she was sorry for their loss. She wanted to do all of this, but she was afraid it wouldn't come out right, so she didn't. All she said was, "I'd like that one please."
"Excellent choice," Emily replied as she took the cupcake from the case and placed it on a small plate.
After Maura paid, she and Jane walked to a table and sat down.
"So, I guess you decided not to tell them."
Maura shook her head. "It's for the best. I mean what would I say, "Hey, your dead mom used to be my nanny." I don't want to upset them by mentioning her."
"Aw Maur, it's more than that, you came to see them, and tell them how much their mother meant to you. Also, their mother is dead, that's something they live with everyday, you mentioning her won't make it any worse. In fact, they might appreciate hearing about their mom from someone who knew her when she was young."
"I don't know, I still feel a bit weird about it."
Jane shrugged as she bit into her cupcake. "OH MY GOD," Jane exclaimed with a full mouth. "This cupcake is heaven, we are definitely getting these for my baby shower."
"Jane, a proper cake is tradition."
"Who said I wasn't getting a cake too? Come on and try yours so I can try it."
Maura bit into hers. "This is the best cupcake I've ever had. Jane you must try," she handed Jane the cupcake.
As Jane tried it, Maura looked at the photos that were on the wall next to their table. She smiled at the pictures of Gia and her children at various ages. Then she noticed it, among the pictures was Gia's copy of the photo strip from museum day. Maura stared at it for a few moments until she was distracted by the commotion.
"CRAP, Ow... Ow... Ow...," Emily yelped.
Audrey who was in the back, quickly busted through the doors to come to the aide of her sister. "Em, are you okay? What happened?"
"I burned my hand getting the cupcakes out of the oven, I dropped them and now they're all over the floor."
"Don't worry about that." She looked at Emily's burn. "That looks pretty bad, I'll get the first aide kit." As Audrey turned to grab it, she slipped on a cupcake and fell head first into the edge of a table cutting her head. "Ouch!"
Maura rushed to the front of the store and ran behind the counter to help, followed by Jane.
First she helped Audrey rise from the floor. "Audrey, right?"
The girl simply nodded as she was a bit startled by the fall.
"Take it easy, you don't want to move too quickly," Maura instructed as she tried to stabilize the girl on her feet. She then grabbed a paper towel and wiped the dripping blood from Audrey's forehead and applied pressure to the wound. "Emily, are you okay," she asked the other twin.
"Uh, yeah, but this looks pretty gross."
"Jane, I'm going to take Audrey to sit down, will you take Emily to the back and rinse her burn with cool water. Then bring her back to the table."
"Sure, no problem," Jane guided Emily to the back. "Don't worry you're in good hands," she said gesturing to Maura.
"Jane make sure the water is cool, but not cold," Maura shouted after them.
While Emily and Jane were in the back, Maura sat down with Audrey. She put Audrey's hand up to her forehead replacing her own hand that had been applying pressure to the wound. "Apply firm pressure while I get my supplies from my bag."
"Supplies?"
Maura realized she forgot to mention she was a doctor. "Oh, yes of course, I'm sorry, I should have mentioned this earlier, I am a doctor." She got her first aide kit from her bag and took out an alcohol pad. "This may sting a bit."
Audrey removed the paper towel from her forehead and let Maura clean the cut. She squinted a bit because it did sting. "It's not so bad, thank you for helping me," she smiled at Maura.
Maura smiled back, "I'm more than happy to help. Do you feel dizzy or light headed?"
"No, I feel fine, just a little embarrassed."
"Well if it makes you feel any better, your cupcakes are amazing."
"Thanks."
Jane and Emily arrived at the table and sat.
"How did it go," Maura asked while still focused on Audrey.
"Looks like it's starting to blister," Jane responded.
"It's probably a second degree burn. I'll check it out when I'm finished with Audrey."
Emily gave Jane a confused look.
"She's a doctor," Jane clarified.
As Maura was putting the bandage on Audrey's forehead, Emily notice that the little girl in the photo strip looked like Maura. She kept looking at the photo strip then back at Maura. "It couldn't be," she thought. When Maura finished with Audrey, Emily elbowed her sister while looking at the picture so she'd notice. Audrey looked at the photo then back at Maura coming to the same conclusion as her sister.
"Emily may I see your hand?"
Emily switched seats with Audrey so that she was sitting across from Maura. Maura took Emily's hand and cleaned it, then loosely wrapped it in gauze. "I don't want to you to take anything out of the oven until your hand has healed. You need to get stronger oven mitts so you can avoid this in the future. Please resist the urge to pop the blisters. Also, I must tell you that you make the best cupcakes in Boston.
"Thank you... Peanut," Emily responded with a smile.
"Excuse me?"
Emily pointed at the picture with her uninjured hand. "That little girl right there, that IS you, right?"
Maura nodded. "Yes that's me," she responded nervously.
Both of the twins captured Maura in a hug. "It's so great to meet you," Audrey said. "You have to tell us stories about our mom," Emily added.
Maura teared up, she was truly touched by how welcoming the twins were.
"You should come over for dinner tonight," Jane offered.
"Of course we will," Emily replied. "We wouldn't miss it," Audrey added.
I planning on picking up at dinner at Maura's house. That will probably be the last chapter for this story. I hope this chapter made sense. Thank you for reading. As always reviews are welcome.
Be well and have a splendid day. :)
