Ch. 25- Questions & Answers
They arrived at a meat warehouse. Dean looked around in shock as Uriel and Cass exchanged looks of annoyance to each other. When Dean looked to them Cass walked passed him and stood in front of the door that had been behind Dean. He turned and slowly followed Cass to it. As he got closed he could see through it's square window. In the other room Alastair stood chained to a six point star in a devil's trap.
"He's completely bound." Cass said softly when Dean walked passed him and stared into the other room. Dean stood there feeling very uneasy.
"Fascinating." he said sarcastically as he was turning away. "Where's the door?" He jolted passed Cass, who just kept looking into the other room.
"Where are you going?" asked Cass. Only after the question did he turn back around.
"Hitch back to Cheyenne, thank you very much." snapped Dean as he was walking passed Uriel, who was leaning against a large table in the middle of the room. In the blink of an eye Uriel stood before him with a I-don't-think-so smile as he reached the other end of the table.
"Angels are dying, boy." he said.
"Everybody's dying these days." Dean responded. "And, hey, I get it. You're all powerful. You can make me do whatever you want, right?" Then he turned to include Cass who still stood at the door. "But you can't make me do this!" he snapped. There was a tense and silent moment.
"This is too much to ask." said Cass coming closer. "I know. But we have to ask it." Cass stopped a good six feet or so away from Dean. He looked angry so Cass tried to give him the most understanding look he could. They stared at each other for a minute, then looked away. Dean turned to Uriel.
"I wan to talk to Cass alone." he stated.
"Really?" asked Uriel.
"If you want a snowball's chance of me going in there," snapped Dean, "you'll shag ass and let us talk." Uriel looked at Dean in contemplation, then looked to Cass. There was a pleading in his eyes to Uriel.
"I think I'll go seek revelation." said Uriel slowly. "We might have some further orders."
"Well, get some doughnuts while you're out." said Dean with a smart ass smile. Uriel chuckled.
"This one just won't quite, will he?" Uriel asked with a smile. He was looking to Cass. He shook his head and looked up. "Heaven help us." Cass was uncomfortable with this reaction. "I think I'm starting to like you, boy." His smile faded and he disappeared. Dean turned back to Cass.
"You guys don't walk enough," he said walking over, "you're gonna get flabby." He stopped a good distance away. Cass gave him a strange look.
"Is that suppose to be a joke?" he asked. Dean gave a small chuckle.
"I think Junkless has a better sense of humor than you do."
"Uriel's the funniest angel in the garrison." Cass replied. "Ask anyone." Dean let a silent settle. Cass was wearing a serious expression, so he got serious. He walked closer.
"What's going on, Cass?" Dean asked. He stopped leaving maybe three feet of space between them. "Since when does Uriel put the leash on you?"
"I, uh…" Cass began softly looking away. "My superiors have begun to question my sympathies."
"Your sympathies?" Dean asked a little confused.
"They feel I've become to close to the humans in my charge." said Cass. "You. Eve. Even Sam. They feel I've begun to express emotions, the doorways to doubt. This can impair my judgment."
"So they knocked you down the ladder and put Uriel in charge?" Dean said unsurely. "That's just stupid."
"He is a proud and able instrument of God." Cass replied."But the demotion?" said Dean a little outraged at the superiors. "Doesn't it get your loincloth in a twist?"
"I don't wear a loincloth." Cass stated. "This is what it is to be." Cass turned aside and sat against the table. He looked down mildly depressed.
"Is that what you meant when you said they punished you?" Dean asked. He looked up and nodded. "Why did you do it?" Dean pressed on. "Why did you kiss Eve?" He shrugged. "Okay, I know she'd beautiful and smart and funny, but why would you, 'an angel of the Lord', kiss her?" There was a period of complete silence. Cass was unable to hold back his emotions anymore. He would tell them to Dean. Afterwards he decided that he would bury them away forever.
"I love her." he said softly. "I've always loved her."
"What?!" snapped Dean. "So you kissed her to try to steal her from me?!"
"No." he replied. "I kissed her because she was dying. On the off chance that the small amount of healing I did wouldn't save her, I just did it because wanted to know what it would feel like to just kiss her." Dean softened kind of understanding him.
"Was it…?" Dean began trying to blank out that it was a kiss he shared with Eve. Silence fell. Cass fidgeted.
"It was something I will never forget." he said after a while. "I was hoping that my attempt to save her and the kiss would go unnoticed, but someone was watching." Dean scuffed.
"How do you angels have any fun?" he asked. Cass looked at him not really understanding the question.
"Angels were created to do certain jobs." he replied after a while. "We take joy in our duties. We do not have 'fun' like you humans do."
"No wonder you're all screwed up." Dean said looking away. Dean began to walk to the door of the room where Alastair was. "Tell Uriel or whoever, that you do not want me doing this. Trust me." he said after a moment of staring at the door.
"Want it? No." Cass replied. "But I've been told we need it." Dean stood at the door in deep thought.
"Cass, the things that I did." said Dean sadly. "What I became." His lip quivered as he paused. He felt tears well in his eyes. "You ask me to open that door and walk through it… you will not like what walks back out." Cass swelled with pain, knowing that this was wrong.
"You know what we're fighting for," he mustered to say, "and dying for. You know what will happen if we fail." Dean bid back the tears as a moment of silence passed. "For what it's worth, I would give anything not to have you do this." Dean nodded slowly feeling the sincerity in Cass's words. He took a moment to harden his heart. He looked at the door as he grew angry with the thought of the things Alastair said about Eve and the things he wished to do with her if he had had the chance. He turned his head to Cass slightly.
"I'll need a few things." Dean said softly.
"Whatever you ask for I will get." Cass replied looking at Dean. "Indeed the thought of Alastair harming Eve is enraging.
When Dean walked in with a cart loaded down with his supplies, Cass watched looking displeased with the whole situation. Dean rolled the covered cart up near Alastair as the door closed.
"Heaven." Alastair sang softly. "I'm in heaven, and my heart beats so that I can barely speak… I seem to find the happiness I seek, when we're out together, dancing cheek to cheek…" Dean uncovered the cart revealing bottles and sharp instruments. Alastair laughed. "I'm sorry." he said as Dean check over his supplies. "This is a very serious," Dean turned to him and began to walk closer, "very emotional situation for you. I shouldn't laugh, it's just that I mean…" Dean glared at him as he drew close. "Are they serious? They sent you to torture me?"
"You've got one chance." said Dean emotionless. "One."
"Oh!" he replied teasingly.
"Tell me who's killing the angels. I want a name." Dean went on. Alastair shook his head a little.
"You think I'll see all your scary toys and spill my guts?"
"Oh, you'll spill your guts, one way or another. I just didn't want to ruin my shoes."
"Oh, yeah." said Alastair looking down at them.
"Now answer the question."
"Or what? You'll work me over?" Alastair asked looking Dean in the face with a smile. "But then, maybe you don't want to. Maybe you're a-scared to." It ended it tauntingly. Dean smirked.
"I'm here, aren't I?"
"Not entirely. You left part of yourself back in the pit. Let's see if we can get the two of you back together again, shall we?" Dean gave a click of disappointment, as he turned away back to his cart.
"You're going to be disappointed." said Dean.
"You have not disappointed me so far." said Alastair as Dean shuffled through his tools. "Come on. You gotta want a little pay back for everything I did to you. For all the pokes and the prods. Hm?" Dean ignored him. "No?" Alastair was determined to enrage Dean. "Um…How about for all the things I did to your daddy?" Dean raised his head from his tools as the words seeped into him.
Author's Note: Please let me know how you think the story's going. I keep telling myself that no reviews are better than bad reviews, but any good or corrective reviews are excepted. I also still want to know who think should have Eve. She does have plenty of choices. Well thanks for reading. I hope you've enjoyed it.
