Chapter 25

Going back into the school's system to retrieve files about one of their employees was a much harder feat than we thought. The school hadn't found out that we "borrowed" their footage, but they did increase security after our principals' unfortunate event.

"Have I ever mentioned how much I hate sneaking into school after hours?" Tucker hissed in the silence.

We had done what we did before to get the footage. But with more security around, we had to create a distraction.

"At least you're not the one with a bunch of guards on your tail." I told him in a strained whisper.

I had overshadowed the one manning the computers, and it wasn't a very pleasant experience. Especially when he was fighting inside to get his control back.

Sam had been the one who volunteered to be a distraction. Since Tucker was the only one who could hack into the system, and needed a way to get into the computer room. There was no way I was letting her go on her own.

Jazz was keeping our parents busy, so we were out of people. We argued about it for nearly 30 minutes till a swirling green portal opened in my bedroom. Taking a battle stance to protect my friends, I transformed. Whoever was going to come out of there better have a good reason.

It was Cujo.

The little rascal jumped and licked my face while wagging his bright green tail.

"Woah," I chuckled lightly. "Down boy. What brings you here?"

He barked happily and stuck his tongue out. I guess he just wanted to have fun. A lightbulb lit in all our heads.

That brings us back to the present. Sam clutched onto Cujo's back while he grew bigger than normal. His claws dug into the dirt as his eyes slanted into a menacing red glare.

Sam had her face covered by a strange mask with purple and green markings. She had her hoodie on as well and pulled the hood down as far as it goes to make sure no one would realize who she was. Strapped around her neck was a voice modulator – which added a ghostly pitch when she spoke.

"Take care of her." I whispered to the dog's ear. He barked understandingly and leapt into the school grounds.

Tucker and I heard a couple of shocked then angry shouts, accompanied by screams then a whistle which signaled it was clear for us to sneak in. I swooped down into the building and made us invisible.

We found out that Ms. G lived in a small apartment not too far from our school. It would've taken a fifteen-minute bus ride from the stop in front of her building, and probably twenty-minutes by foot. Knowing this, you could imagine the rush we felt when we were right outside her door, ready to knock and finally getting somewhere in this seemingly unending road of mysteries.

"Don't bother yourselves." A gruff looking man with a beer belly grumbled at us as he bent down to pick up the morning news. He had a steaming hot cup of black liquid in one hand, which I think was coffee.

"We just want to see how Ms. G is doing." Sam said to him.

He peered at her carefully behind his glasses and sighed. "No use kid. She ain't here."

"What do you mean?" Tucker questioned.

"Look, I don't know the details 'kay?" The man tucked the roll of newspapers under his arm and scratched his stubbled cheek.

"Then what do you know?" I raised a brow at him.

"That she's not home." He replied nonchalantly. "One night I just heard ruckus comin' from there, then a suit case and a slam of a door."

Why do we keep hitting dead ends! I nearly wanted to pull my hair right there and then. Every time we think we got somewhere, it would just be a blank wall!

"Wow, you okay kid?"

"Peachy." I said through gritted teeth.

He sighed once more, turning his body to go back inside but stopped halfway.

"You're not the only ones looking for her." He said. "I heard her muttering something about a man and not wanting to be used again."

With that he closed his door. I slumped my shoulders and looked at the floor. How did this keep happening?

"What did he mean?" Tucker broke the silence between us.

"I don't know." I said, "But Ms. G's in trouble, and her solution was to run away."

"We could look through her apartment…?" Sam suggested hesitantly.

"Isn't that trespassing?" Tucker asked.

"Yeah." She shrugged, "But what choice do we have? Don't you want to find some sort of clue?"

"We could." I said slowly, turning to face the door again. "But we'll need to do it after school, the bell is going to ring in less than twenty minutes."

"Please try not to look so hostile." I heard a British voice tell me.

I didn't even bother to look surprised, and just kept my eyes on what was happening on stage.

"It's just an act." Mr. Mathews said.

"I know." I told him, as I clenched my fists.

We were rehearsing the scene where Christine runs to the roof with Raul and they sing their duet to proclaim their unending love. I was meant to hide behind a statue next to them, but Mr. Lancer thought it would be more dramatic if the audience didn't know I was listening the entire time. So for now I hid behind the curtains.

Sam looked beautiful in her dress and red hood. Mr. Mathews was right about it contrasting to her pale skin.

"Say you'll love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summer time
…"

And her voice, who would've guessed that she could sing so well. I sighed watching her pour her heart into the song.

For a brief second we made eye contact, and I felt myself flush. My cheeks heated up as she sang her plead for me to show my love.

"Even a blind man can see what you both have is as rare as a precious gem." Mr. Mathews looked at me from the corner of his eye with a distant twinkle.

Was it even possible to blush any harder than I already was?

"I – I don't know what you're talking about." I mumbled behind the back of my hand as a pathetic attempt to hide my flaming cheeks.

He chuckled, amused. "You really remind me of someone I once used to know."

"Who?"

He sighed and smiled sadly. "An old, dear friend."

I suppose that was the only thing I was going to get out of him. So I turned to face the duet again.

Sam and Dash were holding hands staring into each other's eyes. It was my cue to hide behind the statue.

I took my place and waited for the light to go on me. When it did "Christine" and "Raul" inched closer to kiss.

I knew their lips wouldn't touch, I knew both of them were going to fake it. But that knowledge didn't stop my heart from dropping into my stomach. I remember the feeling when she actually did have to kiss Dash to break a spell.

Sigh, get it together Fenton, I scolded myself.

We all did out parts, and before we knew it, the last bell rang through out the halls of the school signaling our dismissal.

A/N: That's all for now, R&R please. I'd love to see what you all think of this story so far.
