Chapter 25: "I keep thinkin' bout that little sparkle in your eye. Is it a light from the angels, or your devil deep inside? There's always this one question, That keeps me up at night. Are you my greatest love? Or disappointment in my life? Temporary happiness is like waiting for the knife. Cause I'm always watchin' for someone to show their darker side. And you tell me that I'm beautiful, but that could be a lie."
That night Alex spent a little extra time on her make up before Logan came over, hiding the bruise on her cheek. One day she was going to be good enough to wipe that smirk off of Tony's face. Her doorbell rang and she practically skipped to the door, wondering when Logan had made her start acting like a lovesick school girl. When she pulled the door open, Logan stood there in his usual suit, holding a dozen white roses and Alex couldn't help but laugh. "What is so amusing?" He asked, a little annoyed that she would be laughing at him. Alex covered her mouth with one hand and waved him in, trying to stop the giggles from escaping. "I'm sorry. But you're dressed so formal for just pizza and a movie." Logan rolled his eyes and called her a child before setting his roses on the counter. "Do you have a vase for these?" Alex nodded and still grinning, went off to find a vase.
When she returned, Logan's suit jacket was hanging off a chair and he was staring absently at a photograph on her wall. "Where is this?" Logan asked, when he noticed her walk in. Alex arranged the roses and gave them water as she replied. "The meadow outside my grandfather's farm. The horse in the picture is Lightbringer." Logan turned towards her. "He must have been a beautiful horse." Alex smiled, but narrowed her eyes a little. "So, what movie do you want to watch?" She moved to the T.V. where her small collection was stacked under it. "Ladies' choice." Logan said, moving to sit on the couch. "That is not fair." Alex glared over her shoulder at him. "And why would that be?" Logan asked, slightly tilting his head and reminding Alex of a lounging cat. "Because if I pick a movie than it's my fault if it sucks." She turned back and continued her search. "Then do no pick a movie that sucks." She rolled her eyes as she pulled out an older movie. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
After placing the movie in, she sat back on the couch, comfortably leaning against Logan. for once feeling like she felt comfortable, safe. Like this was where she was always meant to be. Logan wrapped an arm around her shoulder and they watched another love story play out before them. When it finally ended, Alex wipe a stray tear off her cheek and Logan smiled down at her. "You were crying." He pointed out, wiping the tears away himself. "Sorry, it makes me a little sad." "You believe in true love." Logan pointed out. "Don't you?" Logan sighed, looking a little sad himself. "I believed in it once, but I fear that may have been lost." After a moment he asked, "Why do you cry for them?" Alex shrugged, a bit embarrassed to be explaining her feelings. "It's just sad that they try so hard to be together and everything seems to be tearing them apart." "but they did succeed. They were together in the end." Alex nodded. "But they're both dead. If one of their fathers had supported them, they might have survived and lived long lives together. Had a family...children." Logan leaned towards her, "And is that what you want? a family and children." Alex blushed harder. "Isn't that what most people want?" Logan lifted her chin with one hand and brushed his lips against hers before whispering, a breath away. "It is what I want and I sincerely hope that perhaps it could be with you." Alex froze, she was falling for Logan so she didn't know why she was suddenly scared. But the thought of marrying him, being with him, seemed wrong. Not when Loki was still out there somewhere. She couldn't force herself to move on and she was wasting her breath hoping that she could.
She looked down at her hands, more tears filling her eyes. Logan's eyes narrowed in concern at the sudden change in her demeanor. "Alex, what is wrong?" She shook her head, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have agreed to this. It's just that I...I'm in love with someone else." She looked up at his face, fear in her eyes. She was scared that he'd become angry at her. "May I ask who this other man is?" Logan asked, he was angry, but he didn't want to scare her or hurt her feelings. If she had fallen in love with another in his absence, it was just something that he would have to accept. He had abandoned her. "I can't really say his name. He left a while ago and I'm not even sure if he's still alive. But I love him and I can't move on when there's even the smallest chance that he could still be alive." Logan sighed, he knew she was talking about him. "This man, he abandoned you, yes?" Alex nodded, a bit of shame on her face. "And did he say anything about his feelings toward you?" Alex hesitated, trying to recall her last memory of Loki. "I think he said he loved me." Logan searched her face, she didn't fully remember his words and she clearly doubted them.
"I am sorry, but I can't be with anyone until I'm a hundred percent sure he doesn't love me." Logan nodded, feeling defeated. "Then I should go." He stood and glanced back at Alex who suddenly very much looked like a lost child. "I am sorry." She whispered. "When you decide, please call me. What I said was true. I do hope to have a future with you, even if that future is only as friends." Alex nodded, biting her lip as if she wanted to apologize again. "Logan, wait." He stopped and turned back, hoping somehow she had changed her mind. "Please understand. I have managed to lose everyone important to me. My grandfather, my brother and my love. I don't want to lose you too." Logan looked at her and spoke. "You are a warrior, just like I said you were. Fear doesn't affect you like everyone else.. Neither does death or loss. Alex, I know you can overcome this. You have before and you can do it again." Logan then turned and showed himself out, deciding to take the long way back to the place he was staying in. Unsure what to do next since his sole purpose of being in the city was Alexandra.
