CHAPTER 25 - Rage

While Shino, Naruto and Shikamaru had been simultaneously having their respective fights against Jugo, Suigetsu and Tenten, over in the fourth arena at the same time…

"Round one…FIGHT!" Ino and Aoi's referee, standing to one side in the arena and out of reach of the surrounding iron bars, announced loudly.

"Time to die, little bitch!" Aoi shouted, rushing at Ino—but she, in turn, flipped backwards onto her hands and in so doing brought her legs up in an arc, kicking her would-be assailant under his chin and sending him staggering a few steps back.

"That's my little trick that I like to call the Back-flip Kick," Ino said proudly as she straightened up again. "I told you I'd kick you in the head again, didn't I?" she added, sticking her tongue out at Aoi and pulling down the bottom eyelid on her left eye in an insulting gesture.

"Grr…" Aoi fingered his chin where he'd been kicked. "Still as spunky as back then, aren't you, kid? Well, just wait…all I need to do is give you one good hit, and then you'll fall like a stack of dominoes."

"You'll have to catch me first!" Ino shot back.

"No problem. I need the exercise, anyway." Aoi moved his head from one side to the next, cracking the muscles in his neck.

Ino stood her ground, watching to see what Aoi would do. Moments later, he charged at her again—but he stopped short just as she was flipping backwards on her hands again, with the end result being that her intended double-kick missed him this time. The realization of this came to Ino as she was flipping back onto her feet…and then she gasped for air as Aoi's right fist found its way into her stomach, then her head jerked back as the back of his left fist smashed into her cheek, and then she fairly flew backward bodily as his right fist again shot forward and this time hit her clearly in her chest area. As she stumbled and fought to get back her footing, her hand touched one of the bars surrounding their arena—"YAAAAAAAAH!" she screamed out as a jolt of electricity shot through her body.

"Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about that…they must've electrified the bars already," Aoi remarked as Ino crumpled to the ground, her arm twitching violently from the electric shock. "And this gives me a little idea for fun…"

"Ooowwww…" Ino groaned as she held her injured wrist with her good hand—but just at that moment she felt Aoi's hand grab her by her ponytail and roughly yank her to her feet. Realizing her predicament, she kicked at Aoi's knees in an effort to get some space between the two of them, but Aoi's only response was to pull his free arm back and slap her hard across the face with the back of his hand. "Let go of me, you bastard!" she shouted, even as blood began to trickle from her lip, split from the slap.

"Why? You told me to catch you, didn't you?" Aoi sneered. "Now, then, let's have fun. How about I start by paying you back for kicking me in the head back then, in the town square?" And as he spoke he roughly dragged her to one side of the arena, then violently flung her against the bars. Another scream tore its way out of Ino's throat as her body made contact with the electrified bars and the jolt of energy ripped through her once again, before she finally got flung off by the sheer force of the shock and landed senseless on the canvas.

"What's this? Done already?" Aoi taunted her. "What happened to that fire you had in you just a while ago? Have I put it out so soon?"

Wincing for the pain she was in from the electric shocks, Ino put one hand to the canvas and shakily pushed herself up and onto her knees. "I'm…not done…yet…" she groaned. "A couple of shocks…aren't going to kill me just like that…"

"Time!" the referee announced suddenly. "Winner of this round: Aoi!"

"What? The round's finished already?" Aoi sounded disappointed. "Ah, well, announce the next round so I can win this match already, eh, ref?"

"Not yet," said the referee, giving Aoi a stern look before crossing over to Ino, who'd managed to start standing up. "Can you manage, miss?" the older man asked.

"Y-yeah…I think so," Ino replied, flexing her fingers a little. "I won't let him get me this round."

"If you say so," said the referee, backing off. "Very well…round two, FIGHT!"

Ino shook her shoulders and then assumed her stance again, her eyes fixed on Aoi's face. "Come at me when you're ready to kiss the ground, punk."

"You're one to talk—you've gotten serious shocks twice already!" Aoi laughed at her. "You should just consider yourself lucky the voltage isn't strong enough to kill…although I AM!" he exploded as he ran at her with one fist drawn back.

Ino dodged out of the way of Aoi's incoming punch and stepped off a little to get some space between them. "Ah, I see you didn't bother with your fancy gymnastics move this time," Aoi sneered, turning to face her. "Not that it'll make much difference—using the same move more than once against me wasn't going to save you, anyway."

"Then I'll just do something different this time," said Ino. "Come on, big boy."

"You'll regret that invitation, chick!" Aoi snapped, stomping up to Ino and raising his foot to kick at her chest—only Ino stepped aside slightly so the kick missed her, and then she stepped forward and rammed her elbow into Aoi's stomach. Aoi gasped as the air was knocked out of him, but Ino didn't let up; she gave him a hard shove in the chest, knocking him further back, and then she jumped up and kicked out with all her power with both legs to his chest. Aoi saw this last one coming and put up his arms to block the chest-kick, but he still got pushed back from the force of it—and then his vision got brutally jarred as his skin tingled and his nerves seemed to screamed out in tune with his vocal cords, as his inadvertent touching of the bars resulted in him getting an unwanted electrical charge.

Disoriented by the sudden shock, Aoi stumbled forward—and then he let out a newly-pained groan as Ino's foot found its way between his thighs. But Ino wasn't about to stop there, for even as Aoi bent over and held his family jewels for pain, she brought one leg up and then slammed her heel on the back of his neck, causing him to crash headfirst to the canvas. "One boot to the head, coming up!" she shouted. "Touchdown Kick!" and she pulled her leg back and sent a mighty kick to Aoi's jaw, causing his head to twist violently to one side.

"Ungh…" Aoi barely had a chance to draw breath before Ino stamped down hard on his head, forcing his face to the ground. "You…" he growled in his throat.

"What's wrong, Aoi? Ashamed of being beaten up by a girl?" Ino teased him, before removing her foot from his head and stepping back. "Not so much fun being a bully when your targets can actually fight back, is it?"

Raising himself up on his hands, Aoi spat blood out of his mouth, and a tooth with it. His eyes widened a little when he realized this…then he turned to look straight at Ino, his eyes blazing with utter hatred in them. "You…are getting a little too big for your britches now," he said venomously. "You like to kick so much? Well, the next instant I get hold of you, I'm going to break both your legs. Count on that."

"Like I broke your balls a while ago?" Ino smirked.

Aoi's eye-pupils all but vanished. "I'LL KILL YOU!" he raged, jumping up and making a mad dash at Ino. She, however, rolled out of harm's way, and instead Aoi crashed head-on into the bars, getting another nasty shock that flung him off and caused him to land hard on his back. The next thing he knew, Ino was standing over him, stamping one foot right into his face and grounding her heel all over his features.

"Time!" the referee called out. "Winner of this round: Ino!"

OoOoO

Back in the waiting area, the four spectators were helping themselves to refreshments and flicking through the designated TV channels to watch the fights. "This is what I call a fun time!" Kiba chuckled, downing a sandwich. "Oh, look, Shino's handling himself pretty well!" he added as he watched Shino's bout with Jugo.

Just then the channel changed. "What the—hey, what gives? I was watching that!" Kiba protested loudly.

"Well, I wanna see how Shikamaru's fight is going," Choji said indifferently as he twirled the remote in his hand and looked at the newly-changed channel. "Huh, look at that, it's Naruto…and he's fighting that Suigetsu guy…"

"So Sasuke-kun brought new challengers in for Naruto and the others to fight for this round," Sakura observed. "Well…Naruto looks like he's handling himself pretty well."

"That's no surprise—he was able to defeat me in our qualifier match," said Sai. "Excuse me, Choji, but could you switch from this one for a moment? I'd like to see how Ino's doing in her fight."

"Yeah, sure—just as soon as I find Shikamaru's fight," said Choji, changing the channel again. "And speak of the devil—it's Shika! And he's fighting…"

Kiba looked curiously at the screen. "Isn't that girl one of the final-year students at our school? What's she doing here?"

"Trying and failing to hit Shika," Choji grinned.

"Well, excuse me for not wanting to linger on your friend's match," Sai declared, snagging the remote from Choji and changing the channel. "And here we are—that's Ino!"

"Yeah, Miss Piggy herself," Sakura grumbled. "But wait a minute—isn't that Aoi she's up against?"

"Hey, yeah…he got expelled for causing trouble downtown a while back, didn't he?" Kiba recalled.

"It looks as if Ino's kicking his butt," Choji chuckled.

"And it looks as if he's not taking it well…" Sai frowned as, on the screen, Aoi slowly got back up from where he'd fallen.

OoOoO

Ino took a step back as she saw the look on Aoi's face while he slowly lifted himself up and onto his feet, glaring at her all the while. "You…presumptuous…little…brat…" Aoi spoke out slowly, each word dripping with increasingly-evident murderous intent that matched the feral look in his eyes. "When I get done with you…you're going to be begging to die!"

"You don't frighten me, you turd," Ino spat, though in honesty she was suddenly not very certain of the truth of that statement, considering the look her opponent was giving her.

"It doesn't matter whether I scare you or not, chick," Aoi rasped. "What matters…is that I'm going to rip you apart, inch by bloody inch. All I have to do…is grab you…and you're done."

"Stop yapping and try to catch me, then, if you can," said Ino, putting up her fists.

Please don't let him catch me, she prayed silently.

"Round three…FIGHT!" the referee announced.

Aoi didn't rush forward. Instead, he walked toward Ino, his fingers flexing menacingly. Then he clenched one fist and flung it straight at her head, but she dodged to one side and delivered a punch of her own to his side—which, to her shock, didn't appear to faze him at all. "Wha—" was all Ino could get out before Aoi's punching arm swung back around in a backhand that caught her on the head and sent her staggering.

Ino shook her head to clear the stars out of her vision, but all at once two vice-like hands gripped her by the throat, cutting off her breathing. "Urk!" Ino managed to squeak out as Aoi lifted her into the air…and then her world got violently jarred as he slammed her down on the canvas, dizzying her in the process.

Aoi hovered over her, his left hand still tightly gripping her throat as she struggled to breathe, his right hand upraised. "Caught you."

Then the blow fell. And then another. And another. And yet another.

OoOoO

"…sweet Kami…" Sakura watched in ever-growing horror as Aoi rammed his fist into Ino's face repeatedly, blood that wasn't Aoi's flying with every blow.

"What the hell—? Hey, referee, stop that guy!" Kiba yelled at the screen. "He's going to kill her if he continues!"

OoOoO

The referee did act. "Rokusho Aoi, desist!" he ordered, stepping forward and grabbing Aoi's hand before he could land the next blow.

Aoi forcefully pulled his arm from out of the ref's grip, then suddenly shoved his elbow into the other man's groin. "Ugh!" the ref cried out in pain, collapsing where he was.

"Don't interrupt me, idiot," Aoi snarled. "This round's not over—I still have time left, don't I?" Then he turned his attention back to Ino.

"Uuuuhh…" Ino's face was battered and bruised from Aoi's incessant punching. Blood was coursing from her mouth and nose, and one of her eyes was black and blue from having been hit. The other eye was glazed over from her dizziness at the brutality she'd just endured. "…help…" she whispered weakly.

"Sorry, babe, but nobody's going to save you now," Aoi declared, grinning nastily as he raised his fist yet again.

OoOoO

Sai's eyes widened as Aoi felled the referee on the TV screen.

A second later, Sai tore out the door of the waiting room before the others realized what was happening.

OoOoO

Aoi's knuckles were covered in blood. Ino was spitting more blood out of her mouth, and her entire face was now inflamed from bruising. "…pl…ease…" she wanted to scream out, but in her current condition it could only come out as a barely audible whisper, even as a tear forced its way out of one of her badly-blackened eyes.

Aoi himself was breathing heavily from his rage-induced exertion. "I guess…my time…should be up for this round," he said presently. "But I'm not done with you yet, kiddo."

On the ground nearby, the referee—still in pain from being elbowed in the crotch—tried to pull himself upright. "Stop…stop it! You've won already!" he gasped out.

"Piss off," Aoi said carelessly, standing up and kicking the referee in the ribs and knocking him back. Then he turned back to Ino. "I still need to accomplish what I said I was going to do…"

The referee managed to fish a cell-phone out of his pocket, flipped it open and touched a button on it. "Security to Arena 3, quickly! Rokusho Aoi's out of control!" he cried into the phone.

OoOoO

"Winner by knockout: Naruto!" the referee was just announcing the end of Naruto's fight with Suigetsu.

"Pfft! Against a loser like him, this was no contest!" Naruto boasted, flashing a thumbs-down to Suigetsu's unconscious form.

BANG! Suddenly the door to the room burst open as Sai dashed in. "Huh? Damn it, I picked the wrong door!" he exploded.

"Eh? What is this?" the ref spoke up.

"Sai?" Naruto turned to look at the other boy in surprise. "What's going on?"

"Naruto-kun, quick! Aoi's going to kill Ino!" Sai yelled frantically.

"Nani?" Naruto recoiled at that.

OoOoO

Aoi gripped one of Ino's ankles and pulled it up to him, with the effect that her leg was completely off the ground. "I said I was going to break your legs," Aoi said darkly. "I think this is the one you used to kick my head like a football just a while ago…so…" Suddenly he wrapped his arms around her ankle. "Let's do the twist!" and he punctuated the word by abruptly twisting his arms in the opposite direction, and Ino let out a strangled groan as pain suddenly shot through her ankle.

"Damn you…!" the injured referee staggered to his feet and rushed at Aoi.

"Referees shouldn't butt in so casually!" Aoi snapped, turning around and slugging the man in his face so as to knock him down again. Then, as if nothing had just happened, he turned his attention back to the fallen Ino. "Alright, I've claimed one of your ankles…now for the other one…" and he reached down to grab her uninjured foot.

WHACK!

The next thing Aoi knew, a hard punch from out of nowhere crashed into the side of his head and sent him staggering. "Gah…! Who—!" he exploded.

Right there, in that moment, was Naruto, bent over Ino's barely-conscious form, taking in the sight with wide and horrified eyes. "Oh…it's you," said Aoi, straightening up. "How nice of you to show up at last."

Slowly, Naruto turned his head to look at Aoi. "What. Did. You. Do. To. Her." His voice sounded hollow.

"I did to her what I intend to do to you, pal," Aoi shrugged. "What of it?"

Naruto stared hard at Aoi. Aoi stared back insolently.

Then Aoi blinked.

Exactly one second later, Naruto was almost on top of him, tearing toward Aoi with blood in his eyes and his fist drawn back.

Fast! Aoi's mind screamed. However…! He lunged out of the way, just narrowly missing being hit in the face as Naruto's fist rushed past him and hit one of the ring-bars—denting it hard. As Aoi took in that bit of information, Naruto yanked his arm back and swiveled his head to glare in the other youth's direction…and charged at him again, prompting Aoi to lunge out of harm's way as Naruto braked to a stop in front of the next set of bars. Naruto didn't stop fast enough, however, and he put up his hands to stop himself, gripping the top bar on that side.

"Ha!" Aoi triumphed. "That's gotta be the second shock you've gotten from those bars just now…" but the words died on his lips as he saw Naruto, letting out a howl, wrench the bar off its bolts and screws with ferocious strength. WHAT THE CRAP?

Hefting the bar over his shoulder like a baseball bat, Naruto stampeded toward the suddenly-terrified Aoi, his own face a mask of frenzy. "Let's see how YOU like being battered!" Naruto roared, swinging the bar toward Aoi's head—

—but just then the bar was intercepted by a black-booted leg raised high, as its owner stood between Aoi and the raging Naruto. "That's enough," Uchiha Sasuke said simply but sternly, perfectly balanced on one foot while the other held Naruto's improvised weapon aloft.

"Sasuke…!" Naruto breathed out between his teeth, though he glared past Sasuke at Aoi.

"You…when did…" Aoi began, sweat coursing down his face at the recent turn of events.

"I've been watching all the fights on my personal screen upstairs. As soon as I saw what you did to your referee, I was on my way down here." Sasuke glanced over his shoulder at Aoi. "You know, by all rights I should just get out of the way and let Naruto do what he wants. However, I'd rather not have any dead bodies on my compound, at least not tonight. If you want to keep your life, right now I suggest you go with my security team. The electrical current on the bars has already been deactivated, so start climbing over them."

Aoi only then became aware of several suited guards pouring into the room. "Uh, yeah…" Somewhat shakily, he hurried to climb over the bars and into the midst of the guards.

"Take Aoi back to his room and make sure he stays there," Sasuke ordered the guards. "And somebody get the medics down here, pronto!"

"Yes, sir!" the guards replied, and several of them ushered Aoi out of the room.

All this time Sasuke hadn't lowered his leg, which was still holding up Naruto's bar-club in the air. "Oi. Have you calmed down yet?" the dark-haired boy asked the blond.

Naruto was breathing heavily, his eyes lingering on the doorway where Aoi had been escorted out; now his gaze shifted back to Sasuke. "You invited Aoi to be in this tournament," he said softly and icily.

Sasuke nodded. "I did. I accept the responsibility for that…just as I will accept the responsibility for your friend's medical attention to make amends for what Aoi has done." He lifted one eyebrow slightly. "So…are we going to continue posing like this all night?"

Naruto's gaze narrowed…and then he slowly lowered the bar, letting it drop out of his hands to clatter to the ground. Sasuke, meanwhile, casually lowered his leg so he was standing on both feet again. "Good…there's been enough unnecessary violence in this place tonight," said Sasuke.

"Naruto!" Sai's voice called from the doorway, and on turning to look, the two boys saw him frantically hurrying in, followed moments later by Shikamaru, Shino, Jugo, Sakura, Choji, and Kiba. "Where's Ino?" Sai demanded.

"She's still here in the ring," Sasuke spoke up. "The medics should be down here just about now…"

At that moment three white-clothed persons hurried into the room and stood outside the ring. "Sasuke-sama, we need to get inside there…we can't just climb over those bars," one of them informed him.

"Right, right," said Sasuke. "We'll pass the girl out to you, then. Naruto…?"

Naruto was already kneeling by Ino's side. "Ino," he whispered urgently.

"…N…Naruto…" Ino whispered, one eye barely opening to look up at him. "…you…always…rescue me…"

"Don't try to talk just now, Ino," Naruto replied. "The medics are here; they'll take care of you. Easy, now, I'm going to pick you up." Then, carefully, he lifted her up in his arms and walked over to the side of the ring where he'd wrenched the bar off the top section. "Hey, guys, come take her over here," he urged.

"Got it!" The medics came around to where Naruto was, and one of them gently received Ino as the blond boy passed her to him. Then the trio was gone with Ino in tow.

Shikamaru and Choji stared after the medics with stunned expressions. "Ino…what the hell happened to you…?" Shikamaru whispered.

"It was that Aoi guy," Choji informed him. "He was Ino's opponent…we saw it on the TV in the waiting area…"

Jugo shook his head. "This was unexpected…even for a tournament of this nature, that was still going overboard."

"Damn that Aoi…" Kiba gritted his teeth.

Sasuke turned to the others. "I must ask all of you to return to the waiting room for a little while. I'll update you on Yamanaka Ino's condition as soon as the doctors give me word of it, plus we have a few other injured persons to tend to, too. And besides which, I need to have a talk with Naruto concerning what's happened here, since he was here to witness and prevent Aoi from misbehaving further."

"What about Ino's parents? Somebody's going to have to tell them what's happened…" Sakura said hesitantly.

"No, not yet," said Sasuke. "Not until the doctors can determine how serious her injuries are. I don't want to worry her family unnecessarily, if she'll be able to make a fast recovery. As soon as I get that update, let me handle talking to her parents—she was hurt during my tournament, after all."

Shino adjusted his sunglasses. "That does make sense…the host should bear the blame for anything that goes wrong under his watch."

"Right now, all I'm concerned about is Ino's condition," Sai said firmly. "But Sasuke is right…all we can do now is leave it in the hands of the doctors. Let's go back to the waiting area, everyone."

Sasuke turned to the few remaining guards. "The referee's still here, and out cold," he informed them, indicating the ref who'd been knocked out by Aoi's punch. "Some of you take him to the medic station, and the rest of you please escort our guests back to the waiting area. Plus, Suigetsu and Tenten still need to be taken to the medics too, if they haven't been taken already."

"Hai!" the guards all replied as one, and then several of them ushered the young people out of the area while others got the referee out of the ring.

In a few moments, Naruto and Sasuke were the only ones left in the room. Sasuke glance down at the discarded iron bar. "To think you could pull this bar off its screws and bolts by sheer strength alone…I guess what they say is true, that the human body can do all sorts of incredible things when you're given the right incentive," he commented. "And rage is surely a good incentive, right?"

Naruto glared at him. "You invited Aoi to fight in this tournament. And Aoi hurt Ino."

Sasuke sighed. "I guess you don't intend to let me off the hook for that," he said quietly.

"Ino is my friend." Naruto's tone was steely. "I've barely been in this town a month, but she was the first real friend I made when I came here. People might mix it up and say she's my girlfriend, because we hang out so often…that doesn't matter. For me, she's one of the most important people I could ever have in my life." He narrowed his eyes. "Even though you've sent her for medical attention…if she dies…"

"Are you going to set Konoha Town on fire?" Sasuke eyed him. "Like you and your compatriots did during the 365 days?"

Naruto tensed.

"Yes. I know about that. I have my ways and means of finding out things about people when I want to find out things about people." Sasuke turned to face Naruto more directly. "I have no doubt in my mind that you're different from what all the rumors about the Nine Terrors have said, Naruto. None of the stories I've heard say anything about a Kyuushingai fighting for the sake of protecting a friend."

"I don't care what you've heard. And I don't care what you want to think about me." Naruto held his ground. "But if any more of my friends gets hurt, this whole world isn't going to have nearly enough manpower to stop me."

"I see," said Sasuke. "Well, you can at least rest easy for now. Yamanaka Ino will be in good hands, now that our medical team has her. For now, you should head back with the others and wait a while." He turned and started to head out of the arena. "I'm going to go see how the doctors are progressing. As soon as they give me information, I'll inform all of you."

"Oi, wait a minute, Sasuke!" Naruto spoke up.

"Hmm?" Sasuke, climbing over the bars of the arena, looked back at Naruto. "What is it now?"

"Tell me…" Naruto put his hands in his pockets. "Why did you invite me to take part in this tournament in the first place? Was it because of…my past?"

Sasuke's eyes narrowed slightly as he gave Naruto a long look. "If you can win the rest of my tournament, I'll tell you," he said at last, jumping off the bars and dropping to the ground outside the arena. "I'll tell you this, though—I look forward to seeing how you fare against the other competitors who've made it through. For now…rest a little while."

Naruto remained where he was, watching as Sasuke made his way out of the room. His mind replayed everything that had happened moments before. Sasuke…you had serious balls to jump in right when I was about to slug Aoi with the metal bar…but for you to block it the way you did, even though you knew all along about my past…

He frowned more deeply. Just how skilled are you…eh, Sasuke?

OoOoO

END CHAPTER 25

00000

NEON MAJESTIC: All right…so Ino's been defeated…Aoi has been shown up to be a merciless bastard (as if you didn't know that from his previous appearance in this story), Sasuke reveals to Naruto that he knows about Naruto's Kyuushingai past…and for the tournament itself, it's now down to four competitors: Naruto, Shikamaru, Jugo and Aoi! But who will face whom in the next round? Will Naruto get his revenge on Aoi, or will that fight be taken by either Shikamaru or Jugo? How serious will Ino's condition turn out to be, beat-down notwithstanding? And what are Sasuke's hidden motives?

Now, I didn't get to do this last chapter, but now I'm going to do it—comment on the first three fights in this leg of the Uchiha Zaibatsu Invitational Tournament, that is, in addition to the Ino vs. Aoi match-up shown here. Shino vs. Jugo was pretty straightforward in terms of their personalities; Naruto vs. Suigetsu outlined what I wanted to bring out in Suigetsu's character for this fic; and Shikamaru vs. Tenten was meant to underscore Shika's analytical ability—and in that regard, I think I did well enough. Concerning Ino and Aoi, if the latter's previous appearance didn't show him to be a misogynistic bully, this fight with Ino should cement it by now.

Addressing comments made in recent reviews…yes, I do intend for Akatsuki to show up, but how and when the different members will appear, I'm keeping that to my chest. As for Gaara and the others appearing, well, in some of those cases, all I will say is that you should be careful what you wish for…

By the way, all four of these fights that have ended were meant to be happening simultaneously, in-story; as Sasuke said, for the sake of time in-universe. However, if this was an anime rendition, each fight would've been shown back-to-back, anyway, and so I have written it this way likewise.

Oh, before I forget…as of this update, a TV Tropes page has been created for this fanfic. Yay! However, I still desire to have a unique cover created for this story, so again I'm asking for anyone who has a deviantart account and who can draw really well to let me know.

Next chapter, the characters get a brief break in the Uchiha Zaibatsu Invitational Tournament! Chapter 26 is coming up!
