Chapter 24

[Yamamoto's POV]

I close my eyes and rub my face, trying to forget what happened.

Tsuna and Gokudera slump in their chairs, dozing off. I don't blame them; they had a long day, considering what had just happened in that weird ice baseball field thing.

Miwako lays on the hospital cot, her eyes closed, her breathing steady. Without thinking, I reach out and take her hand. Ice cold.

I start feeling drowsy, and begin to slouch forward when I see her eyes crack open. She blinks once, twice, three times.

"Miwako!" I yell-whisper in surprise, letting go of her hand. Her head turns in my direction, and she lets out a tiny smile.

"...H- hi," she murmurs, so quiet that I almost don't hear it. If I wasn't so tired, I would've been excited that she said something.

"Hey," I reply, letting out a huge yawn. She chuckles quietly, then takes my hand again. Her mouth opens, but she doesn't say anything.

"I'm alright. Just tired."

She shakes her head, and shrugs her shoulders. Then she reaches for a nearby pen, and writes something on a napkin.

What happened?

Oh.

"Miwako," I start, running a hand through my hair. "It's late right now, and you need your strength. Can I just tell you tomorrow?"

But the look in her eye tells me that she won't budge until she gets an answer.

"...Fine," I yawn, stretching my arms. "But let me tell you something, it wasn't pretty." And I begin the story.

Miwako collapses on the ground. Tsuna, after a moment of quiet, grins and cheers loudly. Then, he realizes that she's almost bleeding to death, and starts to panic, insisting that everyone go down and help her.

"Miwako needs to go the hospital!" Tsuna proclaims.

"The 10th is right," Gomudera agrees. "Miwako-san is losing a lot of blood."

We start to go down when the weird girls with the masks appear.

"Before you leave," one of them say, "we will announce the next match."

"Right now?" I growl through gritted teeth. These girls are starting to get on my nerves. "She's bleeding to death, and you're not gonna let us help her?"

"Tomorrow's next match will be Rain," the other girl says, completely ignoring me. "The match between the Guardians of Rain."

Squalo gives me a toothy grin. I respond with a glare.

"We have no time for this," the baby says in a surprisingly cold tone. "The longer we stay here, the less time Miwako has to live."

"Ah, that's right!" Tsuna cries out. "Miwako needs our help!"

We all brush past the Cervello girls and run towards the door to the basement. Panic starts to settle in my gut, as well as a sense of urgency. I run faster.

We make it to the doors. I slam the door open and we run to her as fast as we can. Tsuna fusses over the hole in her stomach, and Gokudera starts pulling off some bandages to cover it. Kasumi cradles Miwako's head in her hands, wiping off some of the snow. I kneel next to her and take her hands.

Cold. Almost... lifeless.

I glance over at the weird lady trapped by the ice pillars. But she's not alone. The Varia stand in front of her. The blond dude is holding up... Is that a knife?!

"No... No, you can't do this to me!" Victoria's voice slowly rises into a hysterical shriek. "I can still fight! I'll kill her! Do you hear me?! YOU NEED ME-"

"Ushi shi shi~ Shut up," the blond dude snarls. "You're useless. Pathetic."

"The Varia doesn't need trash like you," Squalo hisses, wielding his sword.

Tsuna squeaks, turning to the baby. "Reborn! What's going on?"

The baby, for once, seems to look nervous. "We need to leave."

"What's going-"

"Now."

Squalo lifts his sword. The rest of the Varia start to lift their weapons. A heavy feeling starts to settle in my gut.

"Tsuna," I mutter, "maybe we should go. Miwako needs to go to the hospital."

He snaps out of his panic and nods ferociously. "Yeah. Almost forgot. Come on, let's go."

I pick up Miwako, and we start to head towards the door.

That's when I made the mistake of looking back.

The tip of Squalo's sword sinks into Victoria's belly. She screams, a horrible, blood-curdling, hair-raising cry that turns my blood to ice.

And blood... Everywhere. Dribbles down her chin like small rivers.

"Yamamoto!" I hear Tsuna behind me. "Come on!"

I shake my head and turn away as fast as I can, trying to push away the sounds of screaming coming from the open door.

[An Hour Later]

Miwako's blue eyes widen, and she squeezes my hand. Concern shows, and she opens her mouth. Still, nothing comes out.

"It's okay, Miwako," I murmur. "I guess it just effected me a lot more than I thought."

She nods, and writes something on the napkin: I'm sorry. You should sleep; you're tired.

I yawn loudly, almost on cue. "Thanks. I guess I'll see you... tomorrow..."

And without thinking, I slump forward, head resting against the hospital sheets.

And the last thing I remember is a hand running through my hair.

...I kinda dont like this now that I think about it but hey it's the best I could put out in such short notice (I'm kinda busy u see) so I hope u "enjoy" and see yah later
