Chapter 25- Broken Threads
Tongass Forest, Alaska
There was silence in the air.
It was almost comforting.
She knew the team was anxious but she was more nervous than anything. Emrick and Charisma had a long rap sheet together. Each meeting they had was full of bloodshed. Emrick was ready to end this. She hadn't expected for her father to be in this mess. He shouldn't have to deal with it. The man had sacrificed his life to save her. Emrick had no idea what she would do after she...
"Drop zone one is approaching." Miss Martian said snapping Shadow from her thoughts.
Kid Flash and Tigress stood. They grabbed the ropes that would lower them down into the cold icy Alaskan front. The floor opened and the two vanished into the snowy darkness.
"Nightwing, Shadow, we're next." Superboy told them as he put on his jacket. They were dropped off about 100 yards from the house on the north side, while KF and Tigress were on the south side.
Shadow crouched behind a tree with the two boys on either side of her. Miss Martian parked and cloaked the ship along with herself. She flew towards the house until she could clearly see it.
There's one light on and three people inside. Do you want to draw them out or infiltrate? Miss Martian said setting the telepathic link.
Let's see if we can flush 'em out. Kid Flash sent eagerly.
No, they'll know it's a trap. Let's see how far we can get before they know we're here, if they don't all ready. Shadow sent back, looking for another window. There was one to the right of the door and another one towards the top of the small looking shack.
Superboy nodded crouching to the next tree. With Nightwing and Shadow right behind him. The team continued to move in. They were all on edge. The team remained close, as Miss Martian was still cloaked and standing next to house. Tigress and Kid Flash had flanked left and were kneeling near the corner of the house.
The team tensed as the door to the house crept open. A tall built man with dark hair and golden eyes stood in the doorway and stretched. His mouth opened in a yawn. "It's about time you got here." His lips twitched into a sly grin.
Shadow took a deep breath, then stood up and smiled. "You look as handsome as ever."
"I guess something's just never change. Now if you don't mind would you tell those friends of yours to stop hiding. We welcome you to our home." Sylas stepped to his left and grabbed the wrist of an invisible alien. "You missy are not as clever as you may think."
Superboy ran over and snatched Miss Martian away as Sylas held his hands up in surrender. "She's all yours Johnny boy. Now come along children."
Shadow turned to look at the team and nodded.
Following Sylas inside the small house with the team behind her, the door slammed and an overly loud click was heard as the door locked behind them. Sylas stood on one side of the room leaning his shoulder against the wall, his arms crossed. Floor to ceiling bookshelves lined two of the walls; they held jars of everything from frog legs to human brains and infant bones.
The team kept their eyes on Sylas. Shadow looked behind him at the door. "Where is he?"
"And who might you be referring to my sweets?"
"Oh look what we have here, the slut, and her bitch crew." Solomon walked in the room from a narrow hallway to their left. "Charisma will be so pleased to see all of you again."
"My father." Shadow stated firmly ignoring Solomon's remark.
"Oh yes. Machus is it?" Sylas snickered.
"Right this way." Solomon turned and led the team through a door. Sylas trailing behind. The team was on edge, going into uncharted territory with two psychopaths.
The house was much larger than it seemed. Solomon led the team down a long dank hallway. The smell of rotting flesh filled Shadow's nose as she followed closely behind Nightwing. She kept her eyes on the back of his head, trying to keep her mind off her father. If he was here with Charisma, there was no telling what type of condition he was in.
They continued down the corridor, passing a few dozen doors. Screams were heard throughout the complex. Shadow clenched her fists. Solomon opened a door at the end of the hall. The team followed him in. As they walked around a corner, Charisma was heard talking to someone.
"Just stop this nonsense; no one needs to know this. No one should know."
"It seems you refuse to cooperate once again." Charisma looked at Machus just as Solomon turned the corner and the rest of the team came into view. "So she has finally arrived. Now the fun can begin."
Purgatory
Vicken placed a hand on Wally's shoulder. "Look I don't know how this will turn out." Vicken stopped walking as he turned Wally around. The rest of the group continued walking; they had been ever since Emrick had lost the connection.
"I know that you haven't been around Shadow long enough to understand the things that she has been through, that all of us have been through." Vicken explained. "She can be reckless when it comes to certain people especially with her father and that friend of yours."
Wally nodded understanding the circumstances that were held with the situation. This could go from bad to worse in mere seconds. "Dick and I have been friends for years. That girl is the only one he has really talked about, really taken a liking to. He loves her, I know he does and I hope this one time..." Wally took a deep breath, looking at Emrick walk with Apollo and Heath. "...just this one time he will tell her before it's too late."
"So do I." Vicken looked toward Emrick when he saw Wally do it.
The two turned back and Vicken slapped Wally on the back. "Come on, let's keep going."
They walked in silence until Emrick stopped and said she could see the team again. "They're some place cold, snow is everywhere. A small house. A man is standing in the doorway. The whole team is walking towards it they're..."
"What is it, what do you see?" Apollo asked eagerly.
"I don't know, it went black again."
"If they are with Charisma, I'm sure she has spells and even curses placed all over that house." Heath stated.
"Yes, that could be true but then how could their father reach out to them?" Wally asked.
"The house may not receive incoming signals. This Emrick would be considered one, since the other one doesn't know of this ability. Machus got his message out because he was inside the house. If we could communicate with the team inside using the house the other Emrick can be the outgoing signal which means they could talk to us but we wouldn't be able to talk with them." Vicken said.
"Well if they're with Charisma doesn't that mean Machus is near by? And if that's true then Solomon and maybe even Sylas is with them."
"I hate to say this but Apollo might be right. Although I sure hope not." Heath nodded.
"Heath? Is that you?" A voice asked off in the distance.
Tongass Forest, Alaska
Charisma stood with her arms crossed staring at the team. Solomon and Sylas walked over to stand behind her.
Machus looked at his daughter with pleading eyes. Before he could speak Charisma jumped in. "I have a proposition for you." She paused for dramatics. "You give me what I need and I will not harm your friends."
"What do you want?" Shadow asked firmly.
"Answers. Of course." Solomon stated matter of factly.
"Yes, I will ask you a question and you will answer it. If the answer is not to my liking then your father will be enjoying these lovely screws." Charisma held them up tauntingly.
"Please don't do this." Machus wept. "She doesn't know anything."
It all happened so fast even the team couldn't keep up. Wind came out of nowhere; Sylas grabbed Shadow throwing her against the wall. The team sprang into action, only to find that their powers didn't work. It was down to just hand-to-hand combat.
Kid Flash swung at Solomon, who ducked and was barely missed. Solomon came back with a right upper cut sending Kid Flash's head back. He jerked forward fiery eyes locked on Solomon. He did a roundhouse kick; Kid Flash grabbed his leg and twisted. He smiled when he heard a satisfying crack. Solomon let out a strained grunt.
Kid Flash grinned. "Hurts, doesn't it?"
Solomon flung his hands toward Kid Flash. He spoke in a strange language. Kid Flash jumped back unsure of what would happen. But nothing did.
Solomon staggered backwards and into Superboy. Who even without powers could lift him off the ground. He threw Solomon, who landed at Charisma's feet.
"What did you do, my powers don't work either."
"Something I should have done long ago. You were a big help in bringing Machus back, but now you're just extra baggage that I just don't have the time for. Our contract is officially terminated." Charisma put a heeled shoe to his neck and pushed.
Nightwing, Tigress, and Miss Martian were holding off Sylas. They dodge everything he threw at them, which only made Sylas angrier.
Nightwing went in on his left side, while Tigress flanked right. Sylas saw Nightwing coming he was prepared for him. He knelt down and placed a hand over the floorboards, they rumbled under Nightwing's feet. He looked down just in time to see them disappear from underneath him. Miss Martian lunged toward the hole grabbing a hold of Nightwing's hand.
Sylas smirked. He stood walking over toward the two superheroes. Sylas was in his proud moment he wasn't expecting Tigress.
She had her bow out and swung it like a professional baseball player hitting Sylas right across the back of his head. He spun around, stumbling backwards just as Miss Martian pulled Nightwing out.
Sylas caught himself before falling into his own hole. "You little bitch! You think you can sneak up on me?!"
"Well it sure looked like I just did." Tigress growled.
Nightwing took out a batclaw and flung it at Sylas while his back was turned. It wrapped itself around Sylas, Nightwing pulled and made it tighter. Sylas strained against his restraints. They dug into his skin. Red blood dripped to floor.
"AGH." Sylas yelled in frustration.
Shadow stood slowly, still wobbly from Sylas' throw. She had landed on some broken glass. Her white snowsuit was now covered in a deep red. She could tell it wasn't healing. "Damn it." She grumbled.
Shadow saw Solomon fall before Charisma. She was going to kill him.
Shadow saw her father he was looking her. "Help him." He choked out. She nodded. Walking up beside her, Shadow kicked Solomon out of the way; he rolled over a few times his grunts heard around the room that was quieting. She saw Sylas furious with rage. Being held by her friends.
Charisma looked at her daughter. She back handed Shadow then kneed her in the stomach. Chairman's powers did work which Shadow learned by the time she was bound like her father. Her wrists and ankles burned as the ropes tightened.
Charisma smiled at the team. "If anyone moves, I will not hesitate to slit her throat."
