Author's Note: I lied. I'm just so, so, into writing this story! Mostly because of those awesome reviews. Just. Wow. I love you all.
I was bolted awake when Shrewfoot screamed out for Mountainkit. I growled in annoyance, especially upset since I was dreaming about Bluestar's informative speeches.
I got up and looked around the camp. The cats were pacing, and had worried looks on their faces. I ran out to Pinenose who was biting her lip.
"Pinenose, what's going on?" I asked seriously.
"I-It's Mountainkit! She disappeared along with her brother. Blackstar has sent out a patrol to search for them." Her eyes got wide, "what if a fox got them?"
I huffed. "Those foxes shouldn't be here anymore. If anything, they should be towards ThunderClan's border with WindClan now. I'm guessing that the kits just decided to wander off."
Pinenose glanced at the nursery where she should be and she declared, "we're going to find them. Me and you."
I stared in shock. "Is that really a good idea? Blackstar must've already sent out at least four warriors now."
"No. We are going to search for the kits."
I sighed, knowing that Pinenose isn't going to change her mind easily. She stared intently at me like she could make my brain melt if she stared for long enough. I blinked. "Fine. Let's go."
Pinenose nodded and we slipped out of camp together. I looked back towards the medicine den, wondering if Ratscar had anything to do with this. I shook the thought away. He was with the Dark Forest, but that doesn't mean that he had anything to do with the kits disappearing.
Pinenose's ears were laid back. Maybe her motherly instincts were starting to kick in since she's a queen now. It makes sense that she would care so much for all the kits, even if they weren't hers.
I halted when I scented the other patrol. It consisted of Scorchfur, Owlclaw, Rowanclaw, and Crowfrost. I hissed to myself, and shoved Pinenose into a bush. If the patrol caught us not in camp, they were sure to make us go back. Maybe those morons should realize that it's a better idea to fan out.
Pinenose and I stared at the patrol as they passed by. When they left, I let her get up, and we continued our search for Stoatkit and Mountainkit. I nodded and said, "they're heading towards the ThunderClan border. So let's just head to the lake for now."
Pinenose twitched her tail and sprinted to the lake. I lagged behind, calling out for Stoatkit and Mountainkit. Then I suddenly heard a desperate mew for help. My ears perked up and I trotted to the lake.
When we bursted out of the bushes, I saw a large log jutting out above the lake. Mountainkit's grey fur was speckled with mud and her eyes were wide with fear for herself and her sibling. Her baby soft claws were hooked onto the soggy log. Stoatkit desperately hug on, his back legs dug into the tree.
"Hold on, Mountains!" Stoatkit cried out, wincing, "don't fall!"
"Stoatkit! Mountainkit!" Pinenose cried out, rushing toward the log. I charged to them and leaped into the lake. One thing though.
I forgot I didn't know how to swim.
I spluttered out water and flailed, attempting to catch Mountainkit in case she falls. Pinenose wrapped her jaw around Stoatkit's scruff. Stoatkit kicked and protested, saying he had to save his sister. Mountainkit stared ahead, then she let go. She squealed as she hit the water. I tried to get a good grasp of the kit around her scruff but she was too sleek and wet.
I flailed as well in the water. Pinenose stared ahead in horror.
Is this how I'm going to die? Will I end up with a similar fate to Flametail?
I managed to wrap my paws around Mountainkit's waist, but we were underwater. I tried to breathe in, only getting water into my lungs. I gasped and spluttered, trying to paddle ashore.
You can do it. Said a tom cat's voice.
It wasn't Flametail, it was someone else. I scented a faint trace of ThunderClan.
It's just like running. He purred. I didn't see any cat, but I raised my legs and began to paddle steadily.
It's okay. Just keep going that way until you hit the shore.
Then the scent faded away. There was only one candidate for that voice; Oakheart. He was Bluestar's mate from RiverClan, so it makes sense why he'd help me. Bluestar sort of favors me…
I paddled unsteadily, trying to keep the kit's head above water, but only failed. It seemed to last forever until I hit shore. I flopped myself down and panted. Everything looked too blurry. I coughed up streams of water along with saliva.
I slowly closed my eyes and let go of Mountainkit.
I saved her, right?
Right?
I slowly opened my eyes, vision still blurry around the edges. I felt unbelievingly cold and numb. Moss was wrapped around my body, and the scent of Ratscar hit me like a bowling ball.
Across from me was a grey kit with white paws and closed eyes. Her brother was sleeping next to her. He looked a lot drier than me, but he was shaking with fear.
I coughed and wrapped my tail around my nose.
"I see you're awake now."
I weakly looked up to see the pale brown small tabby tom with a greying muzzle and weary paws. He smiled and set down some leaves in front of me. I sniffed them and took them in my mouth and swallowed them, feeling the disgusting bitter taste wash over me. I stuck out my tongue and stared at Littlecloud.
I stared at Mountainkit for a second before I tried to get up, only having my sore muscles take over and weigh me back down.
"Don't get ahead of yourself." Littlecloud said softly, "Flametail wouldn't have wanted that."
I hissed, realizing that the Clan has found my central weakness to have me do what they want. All you have to say is, 'Flametail would have wanted…' and bam, I'm all yours.
"Don't mention Flametail." I hissed. I lashed my tail angrily and glanced at Ratscar, who was asleep. "Will Mountainkit be okay?"
"There's no way of telling." Littlecloud responded walking slowly towards the kit. He tucked her carefully in more moss and went on, "she's got too much water in her lungs and she's too weak. If you want me to be honest, I'll say that she doesn't have much longer until she sees StarClan."
That's when I snapped. I snarled and stood up, ignoring my aching body. "Y-you can't be sure of that. She could survive tonight! All I have to do…" I limped over to her little body and laid down next to her, wrapping my tail around her, "all I have to do is keep her warm."
Littlecloud sighed wearily and shook his head. "That's not how it wor-"
"You don't know that!" I hissed. He stepped back. I glanced outside, seeing that it was sunset. "I'll stay with the kits for tonight. They aren't going to die as long as I'm watching them, I guarantee it."
Littlecloud watched me stay wrapped up with Stoatkit and Mountainkit for a while before walking to his nest and settling down.
I won't let the kits die.
I didn't even bother going to sleep. I rested my head on my paws and watched Mountainkit. But almost like what Littlecloud said was a prophecy, the kit's breathing got slower and slower. The half moon rose high in the sky and the stars gleamed where there wasn't clouds.
I wrapped my paw around Mountainkit's torso and finally shut my eyes, letting sleep take over my system.
It was a perfect, dreamless sleep. But when I woke up, it was like a nightmare. The kit wasn't breathing at all.
I gasped and immediately forced myself to get up. I nudged her but she didn't react. Stoatkit wasn't there anymore. I looked outside, seeing clouds block out the sun. I blinked and looked back at Mountainkit. I rushed to her and nudged her cheek with my nose.
"Wake up," I said quietly, "it's morning, you have to wake up now."
A shadow blocked out my vision. I turned around and saw Ratscar and Littlecloud.
"Fallensky…" Littlecloud started. He walked and stood in front of me, "I'm sorry to say, but she's dead."
"No. She's not dead." I growled, "she's just… she's just really weak."
Littlecloud set his paw on mine and set it on Mountainkit's pelt. "Do you feel how cold she is? Don't you feel that she's not breathing anymore?"
I stared with eyes wide open and I bit my cheek. I sighed and looked at my paw, still set on the kit's body. I sighed and walked outside gloomily. "I'll tell Shrewfoot and Owlclaw the bad news."
