The grey warrior stood there in happiness.
"And-And you're sure," she asked a dark grey-blue cat. The tom let out an annoyed sigh.
"Yes I'm sure. Now if you don't mind I have some sick warriors to take care of," he snapped. The grey she-cat nodded her head, then went to get her mate.
"Brackenshade, can I speak to you in the forest," Embersong asked. The dark tabby nodded his head and the pair padded out into the frosty woods. When they reached a clearing Embersong sat the tom down.
"Brackenshade I have some great news," she began.
"What is it," Brackenshade asked smiling.
"I'm-I'm going to have kits," she exclaimed. She expected her mate to be speechless, smiling at the thought of him begin a farther, but instead he had the look of anger and hate.
"Kits? Kits?! You thought kits who are useless wastes of spaces is great news?! They'll cause trouble for us! I can't believe you," the tom hissed. Embersong stepped back, feeling tears weld from her eyes.
"I-I thought you loved me," she wept. Brackenshade simply sneered.
"Love you?! Ha you must be joking! All I saw in you was beauty, but I see I'm wrong with that now too," he laughed. Embersong was hurt. She felt like her heart had completely shattered and that no one could fix it. She stood frozen, shocked, and ashamed.
"Why," Embersong asked.
"Why?! Kits is why! Blasted kits," the tom explained acting like though it was obvious.
"You weren't like that before! Besides, you were a kit once too," Embersong replied, half challenging the tom.
"I was blinded and stupid! But, then I was taught by someone who wasn't like that Embersong," Brackenshade argued. All the grey warrior could do was weep and shake her head whispering "no" as she did so. As Brackenshade laughed and Embersong wept, from behind them the she-cat heard rustling.
"I can't believe you Brackenshade," a she-cat yowled. Embersong glanced behind her and saw Feathernose standing there with her golden eyes blazing with anger.
"Why hello Feathernose. Don't you look lovely," the tom purred clearly flirting.
"Brackenshade how could you do that to Embersong," Feathernose began, "She's your mate who's going to have your kits! I-I can't believe you," the pale tabby hissed. Brackenshade just laughed and looked at the she-cats with a glint of enjoyment in his eyes.
"No matter because you can't convince me otherwise. Kits are useless until they know how to hunt and fight for themselves!"
"I can't believe I…," Feathernose hissed stopping midsentence. Brackenshade padded off, acting like nothing happened. Before he left though he turned and glared at Embersong.
"One more thing love we're not mates," he told the she-cat grinning before going back to camp. It felt like her world was crashing down, like everything that she loved didn't matter anymore. She felt numb all over and felt like nothing could help her.
"Embersong are you alright," Feathernose asked. For a few moments, Embersong couldn't reply.
"N-No. I'm not fine. Not only did I lose my mate, but he didn't even really love me," the warrior wailed to her clan mate. Feathernose padded up to the she-cat ad placed her tail on Embersong's shoulder.
"It's alright Embersong. You didn't deserve him anyways," Feathernose replied trying to sooth the dark grey soon-to-be mother.
"Feathernose there you are," hissed a warrior. Both she-cat whipped around only to see Minnowclaw standing by the bush.
"Sorry, but something happened with Embersong," Feathernose replied. Minnowclaw's face went from angry caring at the mention of his friend's name.
"What happened," he asked.
"Brackenshade…Brackensahde said he never loved me," Embersong started. She explained what happened, everything from when she found out she was going to be a mother to when he showed up. After she finished Minnowclaw was standing there shaking his head.
"How could he," he asked to no one.
"How could he do that to anyone, especially you? He should be there for you, love you and your unborn kits! I-I just can't anyone would do that," the grey-brown tom finished with a hiss. For a moment the group was quiet sighing and angry at what happened.
"We should get going before they start getting worried about us. Embersong I'd like you in the nursery and fed as soon as possible," Minnowclaw told Embersong. The three warriors padded back into camp together. Feathernose went to sit by Otterstep, Pebblewing, and Toadheart while Minnowclaw went to talk with Doveleap and Goldenstar. Embersong saw Feathernose's group looking at her and hissing. Her former mentor, Pebblewing, beaconed her over.
"I'm sorry to hear what happened to you," she purred. Embersong dipped her head half-heartily.
"Congratulations sister," Otterstep purred smiling at his littermate.
"Thank you," the grey warrior replied. As they spoke to one another, Brindlefur padded up to them.
"I've heard what happened Embersong. I'm sorry. There's a nest ready for you if you want to sleep," the queen offered. Embersong shook her head.
"Thank you, but I can sleep in the warrior's den for a little longer," the grey warrior replied. Brindlefur shook her head and sighed.
"I'm afraid that can't happen. Minnowclaw insisted on it," she replied. Brindlefur mumbled something that Embersong couldn't catch, but didn't really care. For once after what happened the grey warrior realized she felt tired.
"Okay then Brindlefur I guess I really don't have a choice. Thank you."
"It's my pleasure," the brindle queen replied. Embersong settled down letting her eyes shut closed.
Embersong shivered. She gazed around with fear bubbling up. The queen knew she'd seen this place before, but it had been a while.
"Aww poor Embersong. Her mate never really loved her and now you're stuck with kits that he doesn't even want," a rusty sounding voice purred with amusement. Embersong slowly turned around and saw the dull green eyes she hasn't seen in a while.
"Not you again," Embersong hissed. The she-cat nodded her head.
"Yes me again," the strange cat sneered. Why her? Why, Embersng pleaded silently.
"Why you ask," the she-cat taunted. Embersong's blood froze, realizing that somehow the other cat knew what she thought.
"How-How did you know what I thought…Who are you," the grey queen asked. The rusty voiced she-cat didn't say anything.
"I said who are you," Embersong screeched.
"You really want to know who I am," the she-cat taunted. The grey warrior nodded her head.
"Okay then," she laughed. Stepping into Embersong's view, the queen realized who she was. Dark grey fur, white chest and underbelly, with black tipped ears and tail, with dull green eyes.
"How-How is that possible?! You're-You're…," Embersong stuttered, trailing off.
"Yes Embersong, I'm you," the shadowy cat laughed.
