He began to run to his car setting Maddie down long enough to open the door and turn the heater on full blast. After he lifted Maddie into the passenger seat and buckled her in he ran around his car to the driver side. Maddie slumped exhausted against the car seat shivering as the sobs trickled away.

Chester was far more scared than he had been since his eighteenth birthday. Madeline had always been the braver and stronger of the two. They had both been frightened children back then, but now she was the child falling to pieces as he drove trying to figure out what the hell he the adult was to do.

This was like a math problem he realized as he slowed to a stop at a red light A plus BX equals C

Maddies past plus her current situation and an unknown equals her shattered state and call to him.

Shattered state minus her past because she seemed okay earlier happy even leaves him with shattered state currently equal to current problem... no shit he thought math wasn't always helpful in human situations. Maddie was tough, brave but something had happened to break her into this. Not just an X in the equation was missing though. With the brave girl he admired many things had to have lined up for her to crash this hard.

He pulled up to his apartment. "Can you walk Madds?" Chester asked not wanting to carry a young girl unconscious into his apartment.

" I I think so" Maddie replied swiping at her tears struggling to gather herself after a near thirty minutes of sobbing. She climbed from the car managing to make it to the lobby at a pace that was beginning to worry Chester. Her injuries that had been agitated with the pain killers were now disabling since she took herself so adruptly off of them. Maddie tumbled with a pained gasp. Chester tried to catch her but she fell to the floor anyways.

"Madds shit are you alright?" He asked. She shook her head indicating 'No.'

"Alright I am going to carry you up the stairs to my apartment is that alright with you?" He asked crouching next to where she had instantly curled on the dirty floor.

"Yes." she murmured. Chester gently cradled his friend in his arms before slowly taking the stairs up to his apartment trying desperately to understand why Maddie had been in such a frightening state.

Running away he could understand. It had been a desire for them for so long that it would take awhile yet for that to stop being her reaction to difficult situations now that she had the freedom to do so. it had taken him over a year to stop running away, then back again.

Maddie had managed to regulate her breathing and think past the pain by the time she was gently placed in the bathroom. "Hey I know you are hurt and really tired but do you think you can take a hot shower if I set you in the tub? I am really worried about how cold you are."

Maddie nodded. "won't try to stand up Bu but it's so co coco old I think a a bat bath"

"Alright I am going to turn the water on hot and place you in the tub you shout if you need me, okay?"

"Kay" she replied.

"Alright I am leaving the door open while I grab a pair of warm PJ's for you to put on when you are done." Placing his girlfriends plaid flannel bottoms, a shirt and a hoodie on the floor when he returned he shut the door halfway.

The warm water was a shock to Madelines frigid skin as she tugged her cold cloths off letting the warm water de numb her as well as sooth away the burning running in the cold had caused.

Chester sat on his couch. Should he wait to talk to Maddie or call her guardian. She had seemed like she was doing so well, at school, but now she seemed injured. An awful pit settled in his stomach. Had the person entrusted with her care done this?

Was she running away not just because she could, but because she had too?

She had been through too much for that. He sighed . He would talk to her get the full story, And then if he deemed it safe for her he will call Maddie's Guardian.

Walking into the kitchen keeping his ear open for any sound from the bathroom he pulled a pan on to his stove. Pouring milk into it as he dug around his cupboard for Hot chocolate, not finding any he took out his girlfriends emergency stash of chocolate for chocolate chip cookies and mixed it into the milk, along with a generous amount of sugar. Just like his dad had made for him.

Right as he was pouring the hot chocolate he heard the bathroom door open. "In here Madds!" He called.

Slowly she entered the kitched her arms crossed in front of her gazing at the floor.

"Come sit down drink something warm." He spoke noting with concern how gingerly she sat in the chair.

"Thanks, for coming and getting me." Her voice was soft. Softer than it had ever been in that stupid room.

"Of course." How could I not? Chester wondered. sliding the hot chocolate across from her. She only drank a few sips before cluching almost absentmindedly at her ribs.

"Madds, I need to know what happened." Chester stated.

"Fight with Hotch a" but she ended that thought in a yawn nearly incapable of keeping her eyes open let alone sitting up right she leaned back closing her eyes.

"We can deal with this in the morning Madds, you can take my bed. I got the couch." He explained, but she had already fallen asleep. Careful not to wake her, Chester once again cradled the girl who was a sister to him against his chest.

All the stress, all the memories kept at bay as her mind demanded the sleep she had been struggling to achieve. At least for a few hours she was given a relaxing rest. Chester or Josh as she called him remembered the first time she had fallen asleep mid conversation, it had frightened the then fifteen year old beyond belief as she curled onto the floor and slept a bruise blossoming on her cheek. but now he had come to expect it from her. When she yawned he knew she was essentially already asleep.

In the morning when Maddie woke up sick from the nightmares that eventually came, she missed Hotch, how he always put a glass of water for her to drink. How safe she felt with him. Hotch protected her more than Chester ever had.

It was a painful process making her way to the living room, where chester was reading a book.

"Madd's it's four in the morning are you alright?" He asked with a yawn.

"Nightmare" she replied.

"Okay, well if your up I can us some breakfast." Chester spoke rising to do just that.

Once the two were settled down to breakfast Chester spoke.

"Madds this fight you had with Hotch..."

"I don't I was telling him about you, and he didn't like the idea of seeing you off campus. Then he tried to say he understood, but he didn't obviously how could he? Then he said I was going to get myself killed just like my mama. I didn't I don't know where that came from something about secrets. And I just I don't know I just ran, and then the rain, and the puddle it was like I was back somewhere awful. I couldn't move."

"Madds, when you had a fight. did he hurt you, hit you or threaten you in any way?"

"What?" Maddie asked her brown eyes widening.

"If he did you can tell me, in fact you need to tell me if he did, it isn't normal."

"No, Oh my goodness, god no Hotch he would never, he is safe, Josh I'm sorry I didn't know you thought. The injuries were not inflicted by him."

Chester Joshua Matten's breath returned to him as he heard this answer. "Okay, then Madds, I must contact him, let him know you are safe he is probably worried out of his mind looking for you. Can you give me his phone number?"

"He's going to be angry..." She replied still not touching her breakfast.

"Only because you scared him running off like that." Chester reasoned.

"Maybe I should just call him from a pay phone?" Maddie looked up at chester questioningly.

"He should know you were safe through the night Madds." Chester explained gently

"He might take you away again." her voice cracked.

"He might, but you'll be okay with out me." he explained.

"I don't think so..." Maddie replied wincing as she shifted the wrong way.

"You got out recently right?" Chester asked.

Maddie nodded. "Yeah I was rescued not in prison."

"I know Madds I'm just saying you survived with out me in that terrible place, you'll be just fine surrounded by people who love you."

"It's not the same. The situations are so different..back there I was tough, I was strong, I was me...out here everyone is telling me I don't have to be strong, share the burden, but Chester if I'm not strong and I don't have a mom to make proud, who am I?"

"Maddie you were a reckless and selfless spitfire. You don't have to be anymore. Your still strong. No one can ever take that away from you. You wil always equal you."

" Still think you should have gone into math.." Maddie huffed.

"Nah.. now give me this Hotch guys phone number. "

The BAU Garcia POV

I typed furiously against the my keyboard. Desperately trying to find any direction my mini tall dark and gorgeous had run. Morgan, Hotch and JJ had been gone for four hours. Reid was on the other computer scanning through file after file, profiling Maddie. Trying to figure out where she would go.

Not to her moms apartment they had already checked there. We had sent local PD to her old house and neighborhood but it was unlikely she even knew how to get there. Morgan had searched the cemetery her parents were buried in both around her mothers and fathers graves. Once again Local PD also on the look out for a young brunette alone in the area.

The park we believe Maddie had played at as a very young girl also unlikely but checked thoroughly by police. Who are also still on the look out.

As the door opens Derek enters. His hands curled into fists, I worry for the walls. I mentally sigh, oh Derek...

"Hey you, chocolate Zeus, I know you and you think because you taught Maddie self defense it is your fault she is evading us. But it isn't. She shouldn't have run off like that." I am quick to assure him.

"Baby girl, don't." My heart twinges he looks exhausted, then again I'm sure we all look exhausted.

"No you need to understand running away is not something you taught her, you taught her self defense wich in my eyes means she is just a little safer out on the streets right now than she was a week ago! So stop it we will find our girl." I spit the words out rapidly. There is no other option. "Boss man won't rest until we do. Speaking of which where is super girl and bossman."

"On the streets looking for any indication of her." He replied

"I see any news?" i ask hopefully.

"You'll know as soon as I do" A short silence folows his statement.

"How could she do this to us?" I ask. it seems so selfish, Maddie never seemed selfish to me.

"Baby girl, her life the way she lived for so long locked up like a caged animal, she couldn't leave a room, I saw the pictures they took of it she couldn't run, couldn't leave all those difficult sittuations. She wasn't trying to hurt us, she was running because she could."

"your profiling her, how much like Emily do you think she is?" I asked. How much pressure does this young girl feel to be like our friend. Is that why she ran, pressure. I could never voice these thoughts...they were absurd.

"I don't know baby girl...enough like her I suppose."
