Chapter 25: Epilogue

Mystic Falls 2012

Caroline was packing her suitcase of what little things she had. Klaus was in his own room doing the same thing. Or at least that's what she thought.

"Caroline." Klaus said his voice coming from the doorway.

"Yes?" she asked turning towards him.

"Bonnie is ready." Klaus said staring at her.

"I'm done." Caroline said looking back over at her small suitcase.

"I'll take it to the car and then you go help your friend." Klaus said taking the suitcase from the bed and then moving towards the door.

Caroline stopped him with a hand on his arm.

"I…" she trailed off at a lose for words. Instead she smiled at him and leaned in to kiss him.

"Be safe." She said before smiling at him and allowing him to go put their things in the car. He nodded and left the room as she followed after him and downstairs to where her friends were.

It was the dead of night and they continued to go over their plan anxiously. It was simple enough. Guard the house. Do a spell.

"Once we're done I'm gone." Caroline said sitting next to Elena and Bonnie.

Bonnie gave her a sad look and Elena refused to look at her.

Caroline sighed and then cut her wrist to drop blood into the plate Bonnie was using.

They were doing a spell to make all of the supernatural beings in Mystic Falls disappear. It was the only thing they could do to keep everyone safe. The only thing was once the spell was complete everyone had to leave to stay safe and for the spell to keep working.

Caroline had said goodbye to her mother and was ready to go. Everyone had to spill some blood into the spelled plate and then Bonnie would begin. They had 24 hours to be shielded from the council and then if they were in Mystic Falls they would be found out. If they were outside city limits then they were safe.

Caroline found the whole thing complicated and all she wanted to do was leave with Klaus, but she was still nervous. This would be the first time she was ever living with a boy or traveling.

He had promised to take her to Europe first.

Bonnie began to chant once Klaus entered the room and everyone watched in interest as Bonnie spoke.

Caroline's eyes strayed towards Klaus and gave him a soft smile seeing he was staring at her. Once Bonnie was done speaking Caroline hugged her quickly and then looked at Elena.

"I'll miss you." Caroline said wanting to hug her.

"Ok." Elena said before turning away and walking towards Stefan and Damon.

Damon smirked and Stefan rolled his eyes coming to Caroline who was staring at Elena.

"We'll see you again." Stefan said hugging his best friend and going over to his brother.

Damon waved condescendingly. "See you vampire Barbie. Have fun with Hybrid Ken." He said before taking Elena by the arm and leading her from the mansion. Elena didn't look back. Bonnie left soon after leaving just Rebekah, Klaus and Caroline.

"I'm going to be with Elijah as you too get better acquainted." Rebekah said snidely rolling her eyes before leaving the living room.

"I guess it's just you and me." Caroline said walking towards Klaus.

He smiled at her slightly, "I suppose as much." He paused as she took his hand.

"Do you regret it?" he asked quietly.

"Regret what? Following my heart?" she asked just as quietly.

Klaus shrugged and pulled her from the living room. He refused to look around knowing it actually would bother him to leave this place.

"I don't regret it. I think after I turned into a vampire I was trying to hold on to my humanity still by going to school and staying around the same people. What I think I really need to do is explore the possibilities I can have as a vampire. I'm special. I should start acting like it." Caroline said as they came to the car and got into it.

"And you feel special with me?" Klaus asked with a raised eyebrow.

"You make me feel alive, Nik." Caroline whispered staring at him.

Klaus felt his heart melt a bit when she said 'Nik.' Without words he moved forward and pressed a hard kiss to her lips wanting to show her all the feelings he couldn't say yet.

He broke away just as soon as they had begun knowing if they continued this they wouldn't be leaving.

"Let's go sweetheart, I have a world for you to see." Klaus said taking her hand in his as he backed out of the driveway and headed west.

"As you wish." Caroline said with a giggle as they drove out of Mystic Falls and away from trouble. She could feel her life beginning.

As they drove away they didn't see the mansion going up in flames.

New Orleans 2112

Caroline stepped into the kitchen anxious to see how the preparations were going. She had decided on the elaborate dinner party menu and had made sure the cooks were doing it the way she wanted. She needed everything to be perfect tonight. This was the mark of a brand new era for her and she wanted to start it off right.

She had ended up talking to Stefan for way longer than anticipated, which was nice since she had missed his company and their friendship more than she realized. She felt as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders and she knew that from here on out things would be different. Klaus and her had finalized their vacation plans and were leaving first thing in the morning, so tonight was the last night with their family. She was happy to be spending alone time with Klaus, but she was kind of sad they would be leaving their relaxing life in New Orleans.

"Mrs. Mikaelson everything is all set." The head cook said smiling nervously at Caroline.

Caroline gave her a bright smile, which seemed to set the cook more on edge.

"Perfect." Caroline said leaving the kitchen to get ready quickly and then usher everyone to the dinner. She went into her and Klaus's bedroom to find him lounging on the bed and reading a book. She smiled and went over to him to curl up.

"What are you doing?" she asked laying her head on his shoulder.

"Reading." He said without taking his eyes from the novel.

"What is it?" she asked drawing patterns on his sleeved armed.

He shifted closer to her. "Dostoevsky." He said.

Caroline huffed and closed her eyes listening as he turned a page.

"Are you packed?" she asked.

"yes." He said.

"I am too." Caroline mumbled.

"Did you need something, love?" Klaus asked finally moving his book away.

"No." Caroline said closing her eyes.

"Shouldn't you be getting ready?" Klaus asked smirking as she intertwined their legs.

"Shouldn't you?" Caroline countered.

"I am. You generally take forever though." Klaus said laughing slightly and marking his book.

"No I don't!" Caroline whined.

Klaus laughed loudly this time, "come on, love. We'll shower and then go down to the delicious dinner you made." Klaus said knowing the reason Caroline didn't want to leave his side. He felt the same way, after everything that happened he was keeping closer tabs on her. She was all he had, despite his family, and the agonizing time they'd spent apart was the longest he ever wanted them to be without one another.

"Alright." Caroline said getting out of bed and taking him by the arm. They went into the shower together taking a leisurely time getting to know one another's body again.

Dinner was announced and the Mikaelson clan minus Kol sat down to the elaborate meal Caroline had planned.

"Thank you everyone for coming, I know we usually have breakfast together, but since Nik and I are leaving we wanted to do something tonight." Caroline said raising her wine laced with blood into the air.

"To family." Caroline said with a smile.

"Always and forever." Klaus said as everyone around the table echoed the sentiment.

The dinner was filled with conversation and memories as the thick walls between the three couples slowly fell. All too soon the dinner was gone and the dessert had been served. Once the dishes had been taken from the table the family turned to each other.

"We'll be back soon." Caroline said looking at Katherine and Rebekah with a small smile.

"We'll go on our own vacation when you return." Katherine said with a smirk.

"Perhaps to Mystic Falls." Rebekah said thoughtfully.

"No." Katherine said haughtily.

"So is everything with Stefan ok?" Rebekah asked after a moment of silence looking towards the men conversing.

"Everything is perfect now." Caroline said hugging the two woman she'd kept at a distance for so long. Even if Rebekah was her best friend she still had kept her at arms length and Katherine she'd never bothered to get to know.

"When I come back we'll go on a bonding trip." Caroline said breaking away.

"Great." Katherine said sarcastically.

Caroline and Rebekah looked at each other and rolled their eyes.

"We'll see you soon." Rebekah said.

"Always." Caroline said with a smile and then looked towards Klaus.

Klaus was in a deep discussion with Elijah and Stefan about the politics they'd have to endure when he was gone. He reminded them to keep an eye on the witches and that he'd see Elijah in the morning before the plane since he awoke so earlier. Caroline went over to Stefan and gave him a hug and a meaningful look before hugging her brother in law as well. Once everyone had hugged and said 'goodbye' a million time Klaus and Caroline went up to bed to rest before their big vacation of relaxation always and forever together.

Mystic Falls 2212 Alternative Universe

Klaus Mikaelson stepped into the dim light of the cave with flourish. One of his underlings had alerted him that they had found a human for the sacrifice for the ceremony, but had yet to find a werewolf. He was interested in meeting the human since she was friends with the doppleganger and might know where to find this Taylor Lockwood who seemed to be the only werewolf in town. According to his research Taylor went to school with Alana Gilbert and the human who's name he didn't know.

He had his underlings watching the people around Alana to see who was important to her and he figured he'd take one of her friends and put them in the Hybrid Sacrifice. It seemed appropriate that way. First he did the sacrifice with the doppleganger and then he killed her friends and family, it was fitting to him in a sick and twisted way. But then again he never claimed to be sane.

Especially after she left. What little sanity he had, had previously was gone. His mind floated back to the night she disappeared after they'd made love in the car, after everything that had happened with Mikeal. She'd just…left. Vanished. He'd searched the world for her for 100 years and not one trace of her was found. He missed her terribly, but after years of being alone he figured he could squash her influence out. Easier said than done.

Her absence still bothered him today and it had been 100 years since he'd seen her. He was determined to find the doppleganger, however since originally that was his goal and he hoped possibly maybe he would find her again since that's how they'd met in her world.

If he closed his eyes and concentrated really hard he could still conjure images of her.

Perhaps his determination for finding her was what led him to the doppleganger, but after hundreds of years of looking he'd found her in Mystic Falls. Just like she had said about her world.

He just hoped she was here as well, preferably not friends with the doppleganger to make the whole situation easier. Perhaps that was another reason he had his underlings looking at who interacted with the doppleganger. Or perhaps his sanity really was gone and he would take pleasure in destroying a little girl's life. Either or he was going to become a hybrid.

As he walked further into the cave he could hear someone struggling against the chains.

"I can smell your fear, sweetheart." Klaus said tauntingly as he came to the area where the kidnapped teen girl was. As he neared and finally saw the female's body he stopped in his tracks amazed for a moment. He wondered if his mind was playing tricks on him or if she was really here. She was perfect.

The girl was blonde and curled up against the cave wall. She was attempting to get out of the chains, but her human strength wasn't any match for the metal.

Klaus knew her immediately and felt his cold heart melt a bit at the girl who'd been called Caroline 100 years before.

"Caroline?" Klaus said staring at the girl.

The blonde girl turned around with wide scared eyes. Tears dripping out of her eyes from fear.

"Who are you? Where am I? If you don't let me go my dad's going to come looking for me and he's a sheriff and—" the blonde was rambling fear dripping off her tone.

"Caroline." Klaus asked again.

The girl was shaking, "no one calls me that. It's Carrie." The blonde said.

"My mistake." Klaus said listening to her heartbeat.

"Do you know why you are down here, Carrie?" Klaus asked kneeling in front of her.

"No." Carrie said quietly.

"Do you know what a vampire is, Carrie?" Klaus asked cautiously.

Carrie's eyes widened and she laughed, "Those aren't real! Seriously? Is this like a birthday prank thing or something because Taylor, Alana, and Belinda are seriously off! I mean my birthday is in September for God's sake! Who are you? Like a hired actor or something? Did my friend put you up to this?" Carrie rambled her fear sliding from her.

"It's not funny." She added after staring into Klaus's eyes.

Klaus's regarded her silently taking in the fact that the girl looked exactly like Caroline and sounded like her as well. The only difference was she wasn't a vampire and had no idea about them. He didn't mind that though. He wanted her. Like he wanted her before. And he always got what he wanted.

"Yes, it is." Klaus said at last and leaning closer to her.

"It is what?" Carrie asked confused.

"Listen to me, Carrie. I need you to listen can you do that?" Klaus asked staring into her eyes.

Carrie nodded as she began to feel the pull of compulsion.

"I want you to drink my blood and when you wake up you'll be special. This is a dream. You are asleep. Do not talk." Klaus said before biting into his wrist and putting the blood to Carrie's mouth. She drank for a few minutes and then licked her lips before sitting back. She stared into Klaus's eyes and then he went to unchain her cautiously. She subconsciously leaned into his arms and he kissed her on the lips tasting his blood on her mouth.

"I love you, Caroline." Klaus whispered before kissing her again on her blood stained lips. Then he closed his eyes and twisted her neck in his hands tucking her dead body to his.

"Stay with me, love." Klaus said sitting on the dusty ground and holding her body to his. He would wait for her to awake as a vampire and then on with the show.
