Axel Green (D6M, 17)
The four of us, one of the only intact packs, have been wandering this arena for the greater part of the last two days. Not a tribute has been seem since the bloodbath, which I guess could be good or bad. At least we aren't dead. We had gone through our stuff the second we knew that we were safe from the dangers of the bloodbath, I got a small backpack with a bandage, three sleeping pills, a small pack of matches, a bag of peanuts, and a small spool of wire, nothing that useful as of now, especially since the peanuts are already mostly gone. Jimmy got a small silver knife, a sleeve of buttered crackers, some night vision goggles, and an empty and banged up water bottle. Nico got a one liter bottle of water, three packs of trail mix, a navy blue rain jacket, and a pad of paper, about the size of the palm of his hand. Will, who hasn't really said much to us, got a bottle of water as well, a pair of wool gloves, some braided rope and some wheat crackers. We didn't score that much, due to the fire and the free for all, and we definitely can't exactly defend ourselves, since Jimmy is the only one who's armed. All we can do is hope that we can overpower anyone by sheer numbers.
Mere hours after we left the bloodbath, we stumbled across a change in the scenery, a sandstone like maze, in contrast to the dull red bricks. Occasionally, the sandstone would give way to strange foreign hieroglyphics, with strange depictions of people, animals and other symbols that are nearly impossible to depict. And trust me, we've tried. They probably don't mean anything, anyways. But except for the hieroglyphics, there seems to be nothing special about this boring maze.
"We've just been wandering non stop for days. How are we supposed to win when we can't find any other tributes!" Will complains. He hardly really talks, but when he does, it's always negative and about winning.
"You should just be glad that we haven't been killed by the Careers," Jimmy snaps.
"The Careers aren't the only opponents, Jimmy. Mauve and her group are pretty good and Norene has been hiding her skill. At least we don't have to be worried about being set on fire by Citrus," Nico comments. Of course he'd be defending his district partner. He always has been compassionate for others, even in this life endangering scenario.
"Well, if we could get out of this everlasting loop, we could take out the weaklings. Robyn is alone and Kodi didn't even know what the Games were. They should be who we target," Will glares at Nico.
"This isn't about targeting and killing," I chime in, "I just want to stay alive. If you have a death wish, then go ahead and leave."
"Fine. Maybe I will."
As Will turns to leave, I suddenly hear a hushed commotion coming from ahead.
"Wait, do you hear that?" I ask, leaning closer to the sounds, which seem to be the scuttling of feet and female voices.
"I know they're there! But what do we do?" one voice says.
"Just, I don't know, act natural!"
"If they attack first, we won't survive."
"Guys," Jimmy starts, "Stay behind me. I have a weapon. Will, looks like you'll get to do your killing after all."
Lorry Avery (D6F, 14)
We had reached the Egyptian style maze mid morning. None of really knew much about the ancient people, just a bit from history class when I was twelve. All I learned was a little about hieroglyphics and their leaders and stuff like that. But I could recognize Egyptian when I see it. As we explored the new area, I could barely hear the soft thuds of our footsteps as we trek through the sandy path. The walls are a tan sandstone with foreign carvings in them. Also, much like the brick maze, there are Redstone torches placed on the walls, held up by wooden fastenings.
But then, through the vast and sand dusted filled hallways, I hear faint words, which must belong to the guy pack, the one with my district partner in it.
"They should be who we target."
"This isn't about targeting and killing, I just want to stay alive. If you have a death wish, then go ahead and leave."
"Fine. Maybe I will."
"Beyon, Mauve, the guys are behind us," I pull out my knife and Beyon and Mauve do the same with their weapons. Mauve had been practicing all day with her axe, practicing on the torches and walls, becoming quite skilled.
" I know they're there! But what do we do?" Beyon begins to panic, her hands shaking as she nervously twirls her tangled black hair, a habit of hers when she's distraught.
" Just, I don't know, act natural!" I sarcastically snap, under pressure. What are we going to do?
"If they attack first, we won't survive," Mauve thoughtfully says.
"Then I guess we have no choice," I state bluntly, "You ready, girls?"
"As if I'll ever be," Mauve sighs. She leads us, half because she has the largest weapon, half because she's already killed. As we face them, I notice that only one of them actually has a weapon, Jimmy with a small knife. I launch myself at the nearest one, Will, who ducks out of my way. After the first attack, the rest if them spring into action, Mauve battles Jimmy, and Beyon with Axel. Nico just tries to keep to the background, swerving when someone gets too close. As I swing with my knife, Will ducks out of the way and runs by his pile of stuff, grabbing some rope. As he twirls it around his hands, making a make shift lasso, I flick my wrist and my knife goes flying, just barely hitting his left ear and sticking into the sandstone.
As I reach into my pocket of my jean jacket and pull out my second knife, preparing to finish the job. But before I can attack, Will takes the rope and wraps it around my neck. I struggle for a few seconds, but then realize that I need to save my breath. As I slowly and deliberately raise my knife, my head goes hot and I feel my throat closing. Then, with one last burst of strength, I turn around, catching Will by surprise and stabbing him with the blade. The rope goes slack and I fall to the ground, gasping for air as Will collapses with the boom of a cannon. As I gaze up at the others fighting, only Nico glances in my direction with his eyes wide in shock, but everyone else continues fighting. Mauve keeps hacking in the direction of Jimmy, who is quick on his feet and always manages to escape. Beyon is wildly fighting in a way I never imagined her. Taking her knife and slashing wildly, I watch in shocked awe as one of her strikes makes contact and Axel collapses and goes still.
BOOM!
Not wanting to lose more of their alliance, Nico grabs his stuff, along with Axel's and Will's, and pulls Jimmy away from the fray, the two of them dashing through the maze. Non elf us bother chasing them as we all stare at eachother with sad and empty eyes. Each of us has killed. We are murderers. As Mauve sets down her axe, Beyon drops to the ground, tears spilling.
"I- I didn't want to kill him! I'm a killer..." she weeps into her hands as Mauve runs over and sits next to our sad ally, hugging her in comfort.
"Me neither. But it's what we have to do to win," I say sadly. I had thought that it would be so much different. I had never understood death until now. I had just thought that it was simple, no big deal. But now, I realize that it's a heavy burden. Something that changes lives. Death changed Mauve, Beyon, and now me. Death isn't something that should be joked about or treated like a game. Killing is a horrible thing and no one should be forced to do it.
A/N
Yes, I know this was short, but it seemed like a good spot to end. But you did get a lot of action, so yeah! I am also working on a Clique/ Alpha Academy SYOC, so you can send a character if you like. Don't worry, I will update this story still. So what did you think about Will's defiance? Hearing each other's conversation? The battle? Beyon's and Lorry's reactions? Who do you want to hear from next?
Trivia: Who is the District Nine stylist?
Random: Which name on Cahlia's list was your favorite, funniest, and most insulting? And Who do you ship in other fandoms?
Also, check out PeetaTheDivergentMazeRunner's SYOT! A great story and lots of open spots!
Thanks and please review!
