"Mommy it itchy!"

An anxious Elijah was rolling around on the floor in his tux his mom had just put on him. They were getting dressed to go to a fundraiser for Fitz. Liv was six months pregnant and she felt uncomfortable in her own skin because of her enormous belly. They had recently found out that they were having a baby girl so that created some excitement in their lives.

Liv was getting dressed in her closet when she heard him complaining about his suit being itchy. She stepped out to see what the problem was.

"ELIJAH FITZGERALD GRANT! You will stop rolling around on the floor in your suit."

He got up off the floor whining, "Mommy! I don't like this. It itchy. Take it off."

She was only halfway dressed when she walked over to him. She sat him on the edge of the bed as she tried to fix his clothes again.

"Baby, I know you hate to wear these things but we talked about this remember. You have to look nice for daddy, okay. Daddy needs you to be his big boy."

He made a pouty face, "Because he is the Gobernor"

She chuckled at his mispronunciation, "Yes baby. Daddy is the Governor. Remember when daddy came to your school on career day and talked about how important his job is. People depend on daddy. He wants to keep doing good things for them so that is why we have to get dressed up and smile at everyone."

"I don't like it when he is Gobernor. I like when he is daddy."

She ran her hands through his curls that looked like his father's, "I know. I like when he is daddy too." She gave him a kiss on the cheek, "Maybe one day this week we will see if he can take a day off and we can do something fun."

His face lit up in a bright smile, "Like go fishing?"

She was surprised by his request, "You want to go fishing?"

"Yeah, my friend at school says his dad takes him fishing. I wanna go. Please, mommy?" He gave her his signature puppy dog eyes.

She rolled her eyes, "Fine, I will talk to daddy but no more rolling around on the floor in your suit."

She went back to the closet as Fitz walked into the room. He was running late and needed to change into his tuxedo.

"Hi"

He looked at her, "Hi, I thought you were already dressed and ready to go."

"No, I took a nap and overslept."

He walked over to her and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. He rubbed her pregnant belly, "How has my little princess been treating you today?"

"She has been fine. It's your little prince that's the problem."

He looked to see Elijah sitting on the bed watching TV. "He seems fine."

She sighed and walked back into the closet.

Her attitude did not go unnoticed by Fitz, "What's the problem now, Liv?"

She walked back over to him and responded in a whisper, "My problem is our son needs his father. Yeah he seems fine now but you weren't here a minute ago when he was whining about not wanting to wear his suit."

He walked away from her and started stripping out of his clothes, "Here we go with this shit again. You were the one that wanted to put him in school. When he was home, I spent time with him. Now he is gone for most of the day. The only time I see him is for dinner and bedtime."

"First of all, you haven't made dinner or bedtime once this week. Second, he is three. He needs to interact socially with children his own age. He can't spend his days running around the house hoping that you will have a few minutes in between your meetings to spend with him. That is selfish to not want him to go to school."

He started to get angry, "What the hell do you want me to do!"

She responded in an even tone, "I want you to make time for your son."

His tone became a little softer, "I am trying to run for Governor while still trying to be the Governor. I only have so many hours in a day. I try to be here for all three of you the best I can. What the hell do you want me to do?"

"I am not asking you for hours. He is not asking you for hours. But we at least deserve a few minutes."

Elijah called out from the other room but Fitz didn't hear him. He was too busy looking at Liv.

His trance was finally broken when she told him, "Your son is talking to you."

He walked out the closet and sat on the bed, "What did you say son?"

He smiled at his dad, "I am being a big boy."

He looked at his son who had his mother's smile but his blue eyes. He promised when he took office that he would always put them first. But everything is happening so quickly that he just can't seem to get a grip on things. Now his family is suffering. His pregnant wife has to be the backbone of the family. When did he lose his way? When did his family stop becoming a priority? Looking at his son, he wondered, when did he turn into his father? Big Jerry never made time for him except when he was belittling him. He couldn't do that to his son. He wanted to be a better father than the one he had.

He showered and changed. They arrived at the fundraiser in a limo. It was a formal gathering with some big time donors. Many of whom Cyrus had invited to the wedding. Liv knew that Elijah hated things like this. He was afraid of all of the flashing lights and cameras. She always kept him close to her during these events.

This time Fitz decided that he would keep him close to him. He thought about the words his wife said. She was right. They deserved a few minutes of his time.

They walked into the fundraiser with Fitz holding Elijah in his arms while holding hands with Liv. They smiled and greeted everyone. Her parents, his mom and Nana were all in attendance. It was an upscale black tie function. There was a lot of dancing and drinking. Towards the end of the night, Liv and Elijah were both tired. They did their duty and stood on stage with Fitz as he gave a moving speech. They smiled and waved to everyone. Now they were exhausted.

Fitz saw the two of them sitting at the table and sat down beside Liv, "Hey, are you guys tired?"

"Yeah, how much longer do we have to be here?"

He rubbed her back, "Not long. Let me tell Cyrus that we are going to go. You and Elijah need your rest."

She continued to play her role and smile as people came by her table. Elijah had fallen asleep in his chair because it was way past his bedtime. Liv looked around for Fitz and saw him talking to some woman that she never met. They looked engrossed in a deep conversation.

Cyrus walked by her table and she stopped him, "Cy, who is that woman talking to Fitz?"

He looked over in that direction, "That is Anne Claiborne. She is a huge donor. She has been wanting to meet with Fitz for a while. She couldn't attend the wedding but I made sure that she was here tonight. If she backs this campaign and his presidential campaign, it would be a huge plus in our favor."

Just then Anne and Fitz laughed at something funny which resulted in Anne touching Fitz on the shoulder.

Liv felt a twinge of jealousy rise up in her soul. She gave Cyrus a look that he had never seen before, "I am the Governor's wife. I am the mother of his son. I am six months pregnant with his daughter. I am a Harvard Graduate and well educated woman. With all that being said, I will turn this muthafucking place out if that bitch puts another hand on my husband."

Cyrus looked at her with fear in his eyes, "I-I will take care of it." He walked off towards Fitz and Anne.

"That's the granddaughter I know."

She turned to see Nana smiling at her. "What are you talking about Nana?"

Nana moved to empty seat by her, "I am talking about standing up for your marriage. I am talking about not being a doormat. You may be a Pope and a Grant but deep down you are Lewis and Wallace. The thing about us Lewis and Wallace women is we are fucking crazy."

She laughed at her, "Nana, I am not crazy."

"Yes you are, you just haven't been tested before. You see when we love our men we love them hard and with our whole hearts. We don't sit idly by and let another woman try to steal our place."

"And how were you tested, Nana?"

"Oh child please, your granddaddy wasn't no saint. Honey, I came home one day and caught him coming out of the neighbor's house talking about he was fixing something for her. Please, my mama didn't raise no fool."

Liv had never heard that about her grandfather. "So what did you do?"

Nana thought, "We got into an argument and I cut him."

Liv was shocked, "Are you serious? You cut Paw-Paw?"

"Yep, two things never happened after that. He never argued with me in the kitchen and he never went back over her house."

Liv shook her head, "Nana that is crazy. Nothing Fitz does will ever make me want to cut him."

"Ok, well let me break it down like this. The bible tells us to watch as well as pray."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I mean, you can trust your husband not to cheat but at the same time don't give him an opportunity. He is a man. He is human. Humans are weak and flawed. So are you. In the heat of the moment, you never know what you will do. Just remember two things: Nana always has your back and I always got my blade."

She laughed but she knew deep down Nana was serious. Fitz touched Liv on her shoulder, "Come on, let's get you three home."

He grabbed a sleeping Elijah and said their good nights.

Nana gave him a kiss on the cheek, "Good night, Fitz. I'm watching you."

Fitz gave her a strange look and replied, "OOOkay."

When they made it home, Fitz changed Elijah out of his clothes and put him to bed. Liv was completing her nightly bedtime ritual when he entered the room. He quickly changed out of his clothes into his pajama bottoms and brushed his teeth before joining her in bed.

She laid her head on his chest while he lay on his back. It was quiet and peaceful. They hadn't been like this in a while. Lately he has been working long hours and she is asleep by the time he comes to bed.

She gripped him tighter, "I miss this. I missed you."

He kissed the top of her head. "I missed you too. I promise that I will get everything under control and stop working late hours."

She kissed his chest, "Who was that woman you were talking to?"

He sighed, "Anne Claiborne. She wants to donate to my campaign but first she wants to sit down and talk to me about my future plans so I told her to call Lauren tomorrow to set up a meeting."

Liv raised her head to look at him, "So she is coming by to talk to you in your office?"

"Yeah, Cyrus thinks that she will be a great asset to the campaign. She wants to go on the road with us so she can see what campaign life is like. I personally don't care but I guess we will discuss it tomorrow."

Liv didn't like what she was hearing. Her grandmother words played in her mind, "Baby, do you think I can sit in on the meeting? I want to get to know her before she goes on the campaign with us."

He smiles, "Sure baby. I would love to have you and my princess in the office with me tomorrow. That way I can steal kisses anytime I want them."

She smiled as he kissed her on the lips. "I love you baby."

"I love you too. Now get some rest because I know you are tired."

He squeezed her as tight as he could without hurting her stomach. Within minutes he heard her snoring and he smiled to himself. He knew that she only snored when she was exhausted. Now she was getting much needed rest and so was he. She made his life complete. She gave him purpose. She gave his life meaning. He kissed her head one more time before he drifted off to sleep as well.
