He still wasn't sure how he was able to miss school to sit with Zoe. Harley told him that she had fainted when they got home, from his house. He didn't know what caused it. He was guessing it was related to stress. Ever since the visit from her mother that's all she had been worried about. Zoe had come to some time in the middle of the night but she had drifted back to sleep and hadn't been awake since. The clock was slowly approaching noon.
Wade was worried and there was no way he would have been able to concentrate on anything at school, knowing that his girl was out of it. He could only sit for so long. He wanted to sit and watch her sleep. She looked like the perfect angel, laying there. His body had grown stiff from sitting there for hours on end. He had walked around Zoe's room. Seeing that she had kept every little thing he had ever gave her throughout the years. It had touched him deeply.
Hearing Zoe move about on her bed had his full attention. He was right there when she opened her soft warm brown eyes. She looked at him confused.
"Why are you in my room?" She asked in a whisper. Wade got her a cup of water. He helped her drink it. He put the cup down sitting next to her on the bed.
"You fainted last night. Your dad let me stay with you. What's going on?" Zoe shrugged looking at her hands. She didn't want to talk about it. "Zo, it has to be something. You don't just faint for no reason."
"I guess, I'm just stressed out," she sighed leaning into him. "I didn't mean to scare you," she whispered.
"Don't worry about that, Zoe. You didn't mean to pass out. It just happened," he replied kissing the top of her head.
"How did I get to be so lucky, to get you in my life?" She asked with a smile.
"Luck of the draw," he smirked.
"I was stuck with you," she told him.
"What?" He asked wanting to know how she was stuck with him. It almost hurt to think she didn't want him and she was stuck.
"At the time, I wanted to write to a girl. I was given your letter, I tried to get someone else to trade with me, but I couldn't. No one wanted to trade with me. At the time, I thought all you would talk about is gross boy stuff. Even though some letters were filled with talks of mud and frogs, I'm happy, I was stuck with you," she explained, bring a smile to Wade's face.
"To be honest, I wanted a girl to write to. I already had a brother, I wanted to see how different a sister would be," he explained laying his head on top of hers.
"Eeww! You would date your sister?" Zoe asked disgusted. Wade wouldn't let her move from her spot.
"You have a disgusting mind, Zo!" Wade chimed in, shaking his head. "You were never like a sister. A stranger, a friend, my best friend and now my girlfriend. I never once thought of you as my sister. If I had, we wouldn't be dating. You never thought of me as a brother?" He asked.
"Nope. Friend, best friend and now my boyfriend, but never a brother. Being an only child had its perks at times."
"At times I wished Jesse was never born, but having an older brother isn't so bad," Wade sighed. "You doing ok?" He asked gently squeezing her shoulder.
"I'm not going to break, Wade," She told him sitting up. "I'm kinda hungry. I haven't eaten since last night and that wasn't very much."
"I'll go make you something," he told her getting up. "Don't move!" He warned going downstairs. Zoe rolled her eyes, making her way to the bathroom. There was no way she was going to have Wade help her there. She was fine really. She was feeling ok, besides her stomach trying to eat its self.
She could picture Wade taking care of her when they were old and gray. She gasped at that very thought. There was so much of the unknown that laid before them, she couldn't be thinking about her future with him, especially that far into the future. It was hard to say if they would make it through the next four years together. Being married, growing old together, that was a bit too far ahead to be thinking about.
"Zoe!" Wade called in a panic. Zoe stepped out of the bathroom looking at him. "Don't scare me like that!" He warned guiding her back to bed. She let a small giggle escape. "What's so funny?" He asked raising an eyebrow.
"You," she replied poking his nose. "I had to go to the bathroom. It's not like I climbed out my window to escape you, Wade. You need to relax, just a little," she informed him. He sighed stealing a grape from her tray of food.
"I was worried," he explained. "It was hard enough on me when you fainted. I can't lose you yet or ever, Zo," he admitted. Zoe felt touched. She stroked his cheek.
"You are the sweetest guy ever, Wade," she said. "I love you," she whispered locking her eyes with his. She had fallen for her best friend. The future was unknown but that wasn't going to keep her from completely falling head-over-heels for Wade. He was always there when she needed that shoulder to cry on. He had been through so much with her and he was still here. Ever since she connected with him over their letters, she had been falling for him, bit by bit.
"I love you, Zoe," Wade admitted. He wasn't hard to love the girl before him. She had taken his heart when they were friends. Piece by piece, his heart had became hers.
