"It will be a long time until this spaceship gets anywhere, " yawned Tracey looking out of a window into space. Sakura, who sat in the captain's chair said, "Actually..." The ship bumped a little and stopped moving. Tracey saw a red surface and a red sky outside where the spaceship landed. Sakura continued, "We're here... on Mars!" Tracey gasped, "Mars?! The spaceship was moving for less than half a day!" Sakura winked, "This is a special spaceship developed by the Cinnabar Space Center exclusively for ridiculously far and long journeys in space. It's really not that big of a deal. It's the same kind of spaceship that you see on anime." Tracey couldn't believe he was on Mars and just replied, "If you say so..."
#25: SLUGMARS
"Why are we going to Mars anyway?" asked Todd as Sakura answered, "We need some kind of lead to where the Stone of Magic is... So we'll just ask on Mars." Misty asked, "Who lives on Mars?" Green came from behind and spooked Misty, "Why Martians of course!" Misty yelled, "Don't do that, Green!" Green cracked up in laughter.
Grabbing spacesuits, the Guardians exited the spaceship and landed on Mars's surface. Tracey asked, "Are you sure that we'll be okay walking with just a spaceship on Mars?" Brock replied, "Will you just lighten up? What could happen?" Suddenly, the ground beneath the Guardians collapsed.
The Guardians screamed as they fell through to an undergound tunnel beneath Mars's surface. Green yelled, "What the hell just happened?" Sakura replied, "I don't know." Fire then erupted from the ground beneath Sakura. Brock pushed Sakura away and said, "Wow! I just saved you! Will you date me?" Sakura ignored Brock and said, "There shouldn't be any fire here on Mars. Something's wrong and it's up to a detective to figure it out." "Where are we going to find one?" asked Brock as Sakura facefaulted.
Meanwhile, back at the Cinnabar Space Center, Mr. Cos had been tracking the Sakura's progress. "Remember, everyone, " he said, "If Sakura's in trouble, we must quickly take the other spaceship and follow her." Two figures heard him and snickered running off. A guard ran to Mr. Cos and yelled, "Mr. President! Terrible news! The spaceship just blasted off!" Mr. Cos screamed, "What?!" Meanwhlie, on the spaceship, two people laughed. One of them was Shiga, who said, "I can't believe we actually made it onto the spaceship! I'll get you Guardians once and for all!" In the back of the spaceship, another shadowy figure hid watching them.
The Guardians traversed the underground of tunnels until they came to a giant lava pit. Misty gasped, "I see something in the lava." She tried to get close to the lava as a Slugma popped up from the lava and aimed a Flamethrower at Misty. Ash ran over to Misty and found a man pick her up. The man had short red hair and wore an eyepatch on his left eye. He was a middle-aged man who sported a depressing frown.
The man yelled in a deep voice, "Fool! Why do you go near the fire?!" Misty said, "Well, I thought I saw something..." The man asked, "You saw nothing!" Sakura then walked up to the man and said, "Excuse me..." The man said, "My name is Rune." Sakura continued, "Yes, Rune... My name is Sakura from the Cinnabar Space Center. I was wondering why there was so much lava here before, and why a Slugma was just there right now."
Rune gasped, "The Cinnabar Space Center?! I used to work as a scientist. About 25 years ago, a discovery on Mars by the Cinnabar Space Center took place. The whole discovery was kept under wraps for a long time, but I'll tell you now. As it had turned out, Mars was becoming blue. They had assigned me to solve the cause of the problem, and look for a way to fix it. Really, it didn't bother me whether Mars was red or blue, but they had urged me to go. My original hypothesis was that the temperature in Mars was dropping steadily and that the cold was starting to change Mars's color to blue. To revert Mars to its original state, I was given a spaceship to test my hypothesis out. Bringing a large group of Slugma, I traveled to Mars believing that I could raise the temperature using the Slugma's body heat and its general fire abilities."
Dash asked, "But why did you stay here on Mars?" Rune continued, "However, when I landed and had the Slugma ember the planet, I hadn't expected that they would actually create a lava pit on Mars. Of course, I had exceeded in making Mars red again, but now the planet was on fire. I decided that I had to leave quickly. However, as I returned to my spaceship, I found it burnt by the lava. I tried to retrieve the parts, but was unsuccessful. Stranded, I live here with my only friends, the Slugma."
Sakura cried, "Wow, that's a seriously depressing story! Rune, if you would like, we could bring you back to Earth on our way back. In fact, you can come with us in our spaceship." Rune sighed, "That's kind of you, but what about the Slugma?" Sakura said, "The Slugma can come too. Now come on!" Rune sadly looked at the Slugma.
Suddenly, a spaceship landed on Mars next to them. Shiga came out and laughed, "Ha ha! I finally reached you Guardians!" Ash gasped, "It's Shiga!" Shiga yelled to a girl in the spaceship, "Play it Suzuki!" A girl inside played a flute as a monster rose from underground. It yelled, "I am Squirter!" Chibi asked, "Squirtle?" Squirter facefaulted. She then began to squirt water all over the lava pit. The Slugma retreated as a pool emerged from the lava. Rune gasped, "Stop hurting the Slugma!" Tracey looked at Mars's surface and gasped, "It's becoming blue again..."
Sakura yelled, "What are you doing to Rune and his Slugma?! Fire Power! Fire Guns Shoot!" She shot at Squirter as it was distracted by the bullet. Ash then yelled, "Psychic Power! Psychic Scepter Extermination!" Shiga watched as Squirter was destroyed before his eyes.
Shiga gasped and ran back inside the spaceship yelling, "Blast! The Guardians have defeated Squirter! Suzuki, let's move!" The girl with Shiga, Suzuki, was unconscious on the floor. Shiga woke her up and asked, "What happened, Suzuki?" Suzuki answered, "A catgirl... She attacked..." Shiga gasped, "A catgirl?"
Meanwhile, the pool began destroying Mars's surface. Rune gasped, "The Slugma's home will be destroyed." Sakura yelled, "Hurry! We must hurry back to the ship before it sinks!" Rune ran towards the pool and felt the water. It was still very hot on Mars's surface. Ash yelled, "Didn't you hear Sakura? Hurry back to our ship! We'll take you back to Earth!" Rune yelled, "No! I must stay for the Slugma!" Ash screamed, "Stoooop!"
Rune jumped into the pool on Mars and felt his body burning. Tracey gasped, "The water is intensely hot here especially after decades of lava flowing on Mars. Ash yelled, "Don't do it, Rune!" Suddenly, Rune's spirit went to the center of Mars. His voice boomed, "I am now the spirit of Mars. I must reflow the lava to return Mars's state to normal. All I ask is that you bring the Slugma with you so that it may find a new home. There is no need for the Slugma to remain here." Ash asked, "But what will you do?" Rune replied, "There is nothing for me to do but protect Mars. Now go before the lava takes you!"
Sakura yelled to Ash, "Hurry up Ash! You heard Rune! You don't want to burn in the lava!" Ash yelled, "We have to save the Slugma!" Suddenly, Mars's surface started to become lava. Misty ran to Ash and yelled, "Let me help! Water Power! Mystical Wave!" The wave brought many of the Slugma near the spaceship. Sakura and Misty led the Slugma to the cargo hold and yelled, "There! Now let's go!"
A single Slugma remained as Ash picked it up and said, "I have to bring this one myself." Cracks appeared underground as Ash ran. Carrying the Slugma, Ash tripped on a crack and dropped the Slugma. Sakura gasped, "Ash! Let me help! Fire Ball!" The ball caught Slugma as Sakura yelled, "Now hurry and come to the ship!" Sakura began starting the ship up.
Ash couldn't get out with the massive heat forcing him down. Suddenly, he saw a claw grab his hand. Seeing the identity of his rescuer, he gasped, "The catgirl?" The catgirl brought him to the spaceship and said, "Escape while you still can!" Ash asked, "But what about you?" "Don't worry about me!" replied the catgirl as Ash ran into the spaceship.
The spaceship departed just as the lava had filled the planet. Sakura said, "That was a close one. What happened back there?" Ash answered, "The catgirl saved me back there..." Misty gasped, "The catgirl?" Ash thought, "But how did the catgirl get here? And how did she escape?" Tracey looked at Mars and said, "Does it matter? Look outside." Mars sported a beautiful color of red as Sakura said, "We must remember Rune's sacrifice... Now what are we going to do with all these Slugma...?"
Back at Shiga and Suzuki's spaceship, Shiga had already left Mars and sighed, "I'll get you next time Guardians..." Suzuki smiled at Shiga and said, "You said it." Meanwhile, hiding in the back of the spaceship, the catgirl watched the two. Shiga asked, "Do you hear something?" Suddenly, the catgirl slashed the two and hijacked the ship.
