The days melted into weeks as we continued along our path through wooded areas and huge fields of corn towards Kings Landing. I had fallen silent again, the moment with Jaime in the night had faded for both of us and he was now teasing Brienne and I constantly. I was conflicted on my feelings towards him and only spoke to Brienne when necessary not speaking with Jaime at all. I spent my time trying to figure out what was going on in my head. It didn't help that I was sleeping even less now as the occurrence of my dream about him had increased in frequency as well as vividness.
We stop for Jaime to urinate frequently to the point where I think even Brienne no longer cares. I'm sure Jaime mocked us both for standing guard on him while he goes but if he did I didn't notice. After one such stop at the edge of a forest, right after some hedges Jaime's needling gets even more annoying, bring Catelyn up into the topic. I shift taking in his words about how her honesty hasn't gotten her anywhere. I fade out again as he continues to talk.
Suddenly we're stopped and Brienne is gripping Jaime's hair pulling his head back. I blink staring at them completely bewildered. "We don't get to choose who we love," Jaime says gently and I realize he must have offended her. The sound of a horse interrupts us and we turn to see who it is.
I sense Jaime's eyes on me as Brienne does the talking with the man leading his horse with sticks tied to her back. She tells him we're heading to Kings Landing and they converse on our chosen route. I glance over at Jaime a couple of times who is still looking at me. I can't help but blush and look away, stealing glances every few seconds. The man continues on and Jaime finally says, "he knows who I am."
"No he doesn't."
"Maybe you're right what if you're not."
"I agree with Brienne, why would he recognize you?"
"I'm the most recognizable face in Westeros."
"Why because you're so handsome?" I say suddenly annoyed with him.
"What if he tells someone?" he says ignoring me.
"He's an innocent man."
"More innocent than Lady Starks daughters?" Brienne shoves him forward and starts walking grabbing my sleeve to pull me along because I had been seething and unaware of their departure.
We stand Brienne staring out across the water while Brienne picks on her for trying to decide. "We'll take the bridge," I say, wary of crossing the river. Who knew how deep it really was and the water was moving fast enough to carry us away and allow Jaime to escape. Though I wondered if he would really try. He had continued to look at me since we came upon the man and I knew that he at least found me attractive and was friendly with me. We had kissed before, but that was a long time ago and probably held no meaning here.
We start across the bridge Jaime mocking my decision and then refusing to cross the bridge in the middle. Brienne tries to yank him along but he won't let her. Something seems wrong. "Jaime, c'mon let's just cross already," I say going to tug on his sleeve.
He stares at me as if he had forgotten I was there. He licks his lips and I'm not sure what he's going to do. He's backing me up and I let him not struggling. "I like you," he says suddenly. "More than I thought I did," he kisses me on the lips quickly. "I'm sorry." He shoves me over the railing of the bridge.
I scream as I go over and hit the water. I sink down to the bottom quickly and then struggle to stand up, to at least get my head above the water before I drowned. I push myself up and stand up on tip toe tilting my head back so I can breathe. There's a lot of voices coming from the bridge but I can't understand anything as I struggle to keep my head above the water. I manage a deep breath before I sink back under momentarily, long enough to start panicking and then I'm back up and the voices are gone.
I start to feel exhausted quickly of the effort of keeping myself up. I start taking my stuff off, untying my armor sucking in water several times with the effort choking myself. I let everything except my light dress underneath fall to the bottom of the river holding my sword with both hands and using my feet to walk/ propel myself to the side of the river. I lay on the rocks not caring that I had banged myself up pretty good in the process of getting over here I breathe hard shaking from exhaustion and the adrenaline of trying to keep myself alive. When I've calmed down enough to move again I crawl further onto the embankment and then lay on my back my sword lying next to me.
"I don't see her anywhere!" I hear someone yell.
"Let's check the other side again."
"Oh c'mon, why don't we just give up already and go back to Hoat?"
"The farmer said she was a pretty one. Think of how nice she would be compared to that beast," I sit up realizing their talking about me. My hand goes to my sword and my breathing though it was quiet now sounds like it's thunder in my ears. I stand up and start to stumble backwards towards the woods. I turn and start running as fast as I can away from the river.
I stop running and lean against a tree the river to my back. I grip my sword across my body the belt hanging down between my legs as I sink to the ground leaning my head back to look up at the sky through the tree tops. The sun has started to go down the shadows around me elongating and getting harder to see around me. Along with the sun goes it's warmth. I had been running for what felt like forever and my clothes were still wet and I was starting to feel the chill in the air.
I had lost the men long behind me but hadn't stopped running too worried about them finding me. I realize that my shaking is now from the cold and no longer the exertion from the running. I set about gathering sticks and set them up so I can light a fire. I reach for my pocket to get out my flint but find that I didn't have one. It had been in my robe's pocket which was now either floating somewhere along the river or sitting at the bottom of it. I couldn't start a fire without it.
I sit back frustrated huffing. I decide that I should keep moving it would keep me warm and I could sleep when I needed to. But deciding to keep on moving was one thing; knowing where to go was a completely different thing. As I sit there deciding which way to go I feel how cold it really was getting. It makes my mind up for me and I get up to start wandering around wrapping my arms around me after belting my sword back to my hip.
As it gets increasingly more dark and more chilly I start to get more irritated with everything that had happened. My thoughts wandered to Jaime even though I had tried so hard to just focus on what was going on in this instance around me. That was pretty hard when everything looked the same and there wasn't much of anything around me except the trees, and fallen leaves.
He had kissed me again. I hadn't even had time to react or process anything before he had pushed me into the water. Where I almost drowned. I kick at the leaves in a burst of anger sending them flying.
Why had he done that? And neither of them came to help me. People had been up there with them though, I knew that. I had heard their voices. I concentrate on what I remember hearing but that's difficult when the time you're trying to remember you were trying really hard to not drown.
I didn't recognize any of the voices, except Jaime and Brienne, the harder I concentrate though the more frustrating it becomes. I turn lashing out at at tree and freeze seeing a huge dire wolf. I blink at it unsure of what to do. It stares back at me it's yellow eyes seeming to glow in the low light. It has a grey coloring and the more I look at it the less fear I have for her. I look at her more and my mind flashes back to the direwolves at Winterfell. Nymeria and Lady had accompanied us, and both had escaped a possible death at the hands of the Royal family. She looks like she might be Lady, who had grey fur and yellow eyes. Nymeria had been grey as well but her eyes were a distinct golden color.
I put a hand on the tree for support seeing that if I got lower than her I would already be way below her height. I hold my hand out inviting her to come closer to me.
She approaches slowly starting to sniff me. I let her sniff my hand and then my face. She nudges me with her nose and I wrap my hands around her neck hugging her. "Lady?" I ask and she seems to nod into me. "Oh Lady you're alive. How did you survive out here?" I pull back to look at her and inspect her more. She is a little smaller than a small horse, her head going up to about my shoulder as I stand taller. "I'm sorry we had to abandon you," I say holding onto her. She sits down allowing me to do so. She's really warm and my slight shivering soon stops and I relax with her acting as a heater. Her head starts to droop so I lay down unbelting my sword and curling up next to her knowing she would protect me if anything happened.
I'm standing in a shaded area well away from the fire that's lit. I see Jaime kneeling on a stump talking with a man. I can't hear what they're saying it's almost as if I'm under water and they're talking. The sound of their voices are reaching my ears but I don't know what they're saying. It's getting frustrating and I nearly scream as the unknown man puts the knife right up to Jaime's face looking like he's about to cut his eye out. The man whispers something to him and then stands up and brings the knife down severing his hand.
I jump awake looking around hoping to see Jaime tied to a tree sleeping and Brienne sleeping with her back to all of us. Instead I see Lady on her feet in front of me growling at something. I peak around her in time to see four men holding swords up in front of them aimed at her.
"We are here to protect you Lady Lya, sent by our Lord Tywin Lannister."
