If you have a tribute you'd like to hear about, PM me or review about them. I'm trying to get to everyone, but sometimes I might not.
Disclaimer: I do not own the Hunger Games.
The careers stood together sorting through the remaining supplies. There had never been greater bounty in the Games before.
"Alright, we'd better move off, so they can collect the bodies," Carter Redfield said when they finished.
"Yeah, the cannons should go off soon," Bronze Kolev said.
Sure enough, as soon as the bodies were all collected, the cannons began.
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven... The cannons went on until fifteen.
"Fifteen? Only fifteen?" Feroze asked.
"Did you guys even kill anyone?" Ryder asked.
"Raise your hand if you killed someone," Zeus commanded.
Beauty Hyel, Feroze, Zeus, Christine Hermosa, Princess Starlit, Adalia Fox, Ryder, James York, Denim Siltey, Aqua Oceans, and Ruben Hadley raised their hands.
"Pathetic," Feroze sneered.
Zeus walked up to be face to face with Jenna Azure.
"You haven't exactly proven yourself... have you?" Zeus snarled, his sour breath in her face.
"I said I'd help with first aid. I'm not extremely talented at weapons," Jenna explained.
"You don't need weapons to kill," Zeus said, raising his hands to Jenna's neck to demonstrate.
"Stop, Zeus. She's valuable. We need her," Adalia said.
Zeus dropped his hands, "Just watch out."
A faint beeping could be heard.
"What's that?" Carter asked.
"Sounds like a parachute!" Ruben said.
"Probably for me," Princess bragged.
But when they found the parachute, they saw it very clearly said Jenna Azure.
Jenna opened it and found a pair of night-vision glasses.
"I guess you are pretty valuable," Aqua said.
Jenna kept her face straight, but inside she breathed a sigh of relief.
Philip Fenson stumbled through the swamp section, his feet sticking in the mud. He needed to find his alliance. The only things he'd gotten from the bloodbath were a small pocket knife and tiny stick of sunscreen. He gripped these two things protectively, knowing that they were the things that could mean life or death.
Philip had grown used to the soft squish of mud every time he took a step. But when he stopped to look at his surroundings, the noise went on. Philip stopped breathing and pulled out the pocket knife.
"Philip?" he heard the voice say in a whisper.
Philip was gripped by panic, imagining the countless mutts the Capitol could set loose in the arena. They were probably mad due to the lack of bloodbath deaths for this huge number of tributes.
"It's me, Rose. I can't find the alliance," Rose Addler said, stepping out from behind a low sweeping willow tree.
Philip broke into a wide smile, "I was getting really worried. I haven't seen anyone from the alliance since the bloodbath. Except you, of course."
"I saw Viztron and October run the opposite way from me, but I couldn't risk running through to get to them. So I guess we just keep walking this way until we get to them. The arena can't be that big," Rose said.
Philip and Rose began walking, jumping at every little noise. After about half an hour, a small hill began, and the lakes and puddles became less frequent. Soon the mushy mud turned into soft grass and a field stretched ahead of them.
"Do you think they're in here?" Rose asked.
"Maybe. I feel like the arena's bigger though," Philip said.
Philip and Rose continued until the sun began to lower.
"You wouldn't happen to have any food or weapons, would you?" Philip asked.
"No. The bloodbath really worried me. But I'm sure I can distinguish some edible things in the arena," Rose offered.
"I have a pocket knife and a little sunscreen. But no food," Philip said sadly as he felt his stomach grumble.
"Maybe we should find someplace to sleep. I don't feel comfortable now that it's getting dark," Rose said.
Philip felt bad for the younger girl but had to point out that there was no place to be concealed.
"If it gets completely dark, maybe, but for now let's keep going," Philip decided.
By the time the sun went down, Philip and Rose had reached the desert, but no members of their alliance. Or any other tributes for that matter.
"Alright, maybe we should find a spot now," Philip said.
Rose looked at the ground.
"Looks like the most comfortable place in the world," she laughed.
"Gives some competition to those Capitol beds," Philip smiled back at her, "You can sleep first."
"Why thank you, kind gentleman. Wake me up if you need to change watch. Or of course if there's any trouble," Rose said as she lay down.
They sat in quiet for a few minutes. Then Rose's whispered voice came through the dark.
"Philip, what's it like in District 12?"
"Dirty. Covered in coal dust all the time. Nobody can afford things, except for the lucky few. The people are nice though."
"Do you have a special person?"
"What? You mean like a girlfriend?"
"Yeah, I suppose that's what I mean."
"I used to. Things were pretty serious. But one day she said I love you. And I didn't say it back."
"Did you love her though?"
Philip paused, "Yes. I did. And not saying it back was a huge mistake. I believe that love is expressed through actions and not through words so much. But she got with another boy and whatever we had is long gone."
"I don't think I've ever really loved anyone."
Philip didn't answer. He was thinking about this young girl. She wasn't actually all that young. Rose was fourteen and Philip was sixteen. And suddenly, even though he couldn't figure out why exactly, Philip realized he was falling in love with this girl.
"I'm glad you're the one I found," Rose whispered. Her eyes fluttered closed and her breathing deepened.
Philip turned to look at her. He desperately wanted to say the same and not make the same mistake as before, but his words would be lost in her slumber.
The sunbeams woke Philip up in the morning. He saw Rose sitting up on her shift. The early sun reflected the red in Rose's hair. Philip realized how lucky it was that two tributes could go home. And he decided then that he'd go home with Rose.
Rose turned and noticed that Philip had woken up.
"Good morning! I used some of the sunscreen. You might want to do the same. It gets awful intense out here," Rose greeted him.
Philip applied the sunscreen and looked around.
"Should we go? We might come across some of the alliance," Philip suggested.
Rose nodded and the two stood up.
"Wait," Rose said. Philip turned.
"I was... I mean, you have a little sunscreen on your nose," she said.
Rose rubbed a spot on his nose and began walking, turning so he couldn't see the blush creeping up her cheeks. There hadn't been any sunscreen. She just had to come up with something to replace what she almost said. That she was interested in him. Stupid. She's in the Hunger Games. It's no place for love. And why should a sixteen year-old like him be interesting in a fourteen year-old like her?
Or that's what she thought at least.
"We need some water," Philip said a while later.
The two were seriously dehydrated, their walk slowing and the sun drying them quickly.
"Where are we going to find any?" Rose asked helplessly.
Philip shrugged. They continued going slowly, looking around for a sign of any tributes or water.
When the sun creeped to the highest point in the sky, Rose stopped.
"I can't do this anymore. I'm taking a break," she said, her voice cracking a little.
"Okay, we can take a break," Philip said, "What's wrong, though? You seem more than tired."
"Of course I'm more than tired. I'm in the Hunger Games and I'm thirsty and I'm hungry and we need to find our alliance and I don't know how to tell you you're totally adorable and I'm falling for you so quickly," Rose lifted her hands to her mouth, stopping the flow of complaints that had quickly become embarrassing.
Her thoughts filled with dread and she walked rather quickly on their trek.
"I thought we were taking a break?" Philip called behind her with a laugh.
"Stop laughing at me!" Rose said, spinning on her heel to face him.
"Was that all true?" Philip asked.
"No. I'm not really in the Hunger Games," Rose said sarcastically.
Philip laughed, "I don't mean that part."
"Well duh," Rose said.
"But seriously, don't be embarrassed, I like you too," Philip said.
"Yeah, right. Don't kid yourself," Rose said.
"I promise, I'm not kidding," Philip replied.
"You're not?" Rose asked, her voice softening.
"I'm not," Philip confirmed.
Rose stared at him, not believing this perfect circumstance.
"Rose! Philip!" a voice called.
They both spun, but saw with relief the voice came from Marko Fairchild.
"You're the only missing members of our alliance! Come on over," Marko continued.
Philip and Rose ran up the small slope to where Marko stood and saw with relief that the rest of the alliance had found a small oasis and two backpacks sat on the edge.
They both began laughing with relief and happiness.
Viztron Lightkeeper, October Smeshle, Runa Araltan, Stalk Pin, and Marko sat on the edge.
They walked down and were each handed a water bottle by Stalk.
"Recently purified," Stalk said proudly.
"There was iodine in each of the bags," Runa explained.
"Where's Asher?" Rose asked.
"Didn't you watch the sky last night?" Marko asked.
"He's dead," Viztron said.
"Dead?" Rose asked.
"Pretty lucky that he was the only one of us. And that we got the backpacks and this oasis," October said.
"Oh! I forgot, I got a pocketknife and a stick of sunscreen," Philip said, showing them to the others.
The tributes sat together, discussing what each had found and trying to figure out the arena.
(Back to Day 1)
Dasha Hakkin sat on the beach staring out at the ocean. She'd survived the bloodbath, but her one and only ally, Phoebe, hadn't. And Dasha felt hopeless. How could she possibly win the Games? Sure, she'd escaped the careers once, but she didn't have a weapon so surely she couldn't do it twice.
As if on cue, the careers ran up behind her. Dasha jumped to her feet and ran. Her attackers followed close behind. But Dasha's talent was running and she soon began to tire them out.
Silver Aquamarine Doswell, Zachary Hutchinson, and Ryder Young remained close though. They were also good runners, and Silver and Zachary were motivated by their possible first kill. Because really, once a career, that's what you'll always think.
Dasha stumbled on the soft sand and fell flat on her face. Zachary pounced on her and drew a sword. He lifted it up over Dasha heart.
Dasha began sobbing, "I love you, Mom, Dad, Kira, Charma, Morgan."
Zachary's sword plunged into Dasha's chest with Dasha's screams carrying over the water.
Jason Benz and Ryder Bee sat in a willow tree in the swamp section. Ryder used willow branches and leaves to try to create a rain trap. Each boy had managed to get something from the bloodbath. Jason got an empty water bottle and Ryder got a package of bandages. Though they were surrounded by food and probably many animals to feast on, they had no iodine to purify the water and no weapons or skill to kill the animals.
"You know, I think I'll have this done tomorrow without any leaks," Ryder Bee said happily.
"It'll probably contaminate the water," Jason said sadly.
"Nonsense! It'll be perfect," Ryder Bee said.
A cannon sounded.
Ryder Bee looked around nervously, "Do you think that was close to us?"
"No, we'd be the dead ones. We're not exactly hidden, are we?" Jason moped.
"Why so down, my friend? Sixteen dead, sixteen closer to home. We survived the bloodbath and even got some supplies. Sooner than later, we'll be in the final 30, then the final 4 and we'll go home!"
"We can't both go home," Jason pointed out.
"Well one of us will," Ryder Bee said, determined.
Melanie Niles walked along the beach.
"So this is a beach," she thought to herself.
Melanie was beginning to feel homesick. She missed the livestock roaming around more than ever, knowing how easy it would be to kill a cow and eat it. But she wasn't too hungry yet. It was just the ominous knowledge that she would never eat a full meal again.
Scarlette Thomas spied on the career pack. They were all stupid, rich brats. She couldn't believe she was knocked out before they even really knew what she could do. She stroked the axe she had gotten her hands on happily.
Scarlette was hidden behind a dune on the beach when the careers killed Dasha. And while watching, Scarlette chose the perfect one to kill. She had her eyes focused on the ugly one, Zachary. He was the one who really killed Dasha. Scarlette had seen by his form that this one wasn't exactly an expert and would be relatively easy to take down.
Scarlette waited until just the right moment, then silently ran behind the career pack to where Zachary was lagging behind. Scarlette swung the axe into Zachary's back. He yelped in pain and fell into the sand, paralyzed. Scarlette's axe had snapped his spinal cord, paralyzing Zachary immediately and leaving him painfully bleeding out on the beach.
Scarlette began to run away, rejoicing that she got away, when the cannon fired.
Zachary Hutchinson was dead, but his cannon made the other careers spin around and see his killer.
A second cannon fired. Silver Aquamarine Doswell had shot an arrow into Scarlette's back.
"Nice shot," Bronze said to Silver.
"Thanks," Silver said, walking over to Zachary.
Blood had spilled from his back onto the pure white sand. The crimson had pooled around Zachary then soaked into the sand, turning the sand a reddish pink. Zachary's eyes remained open.
Aqua Oceans shivered, "Let's move on."
Triton Riviet immediately agreed with her, of course.
Neri Gallard lead the careers away, so she was the first to spot the boy.
"Do you guys see that?" she asked in a whisper, so they could sneak up on him.
The careers craned their necks to see, except for two, Feroze and Princess, who were making out fiercely behind the group.
"You guys! There's an easy kill over there," Neri said.
Feroze and Princess broke apart.
"My kill, he's mine," Feroze said.
"That's my baby," Princess said proudly.
"Don't call me that," Feroze said, glancing back.
Feroze pulled out a mace and approached the tribute. The tribute in question was Hansel Naught from District 12 who was already wandering around half-crazed due to a severe dehydration.
Feroze hit Hansel's stomach with the mace. Hansel began what seemed a mix of hysterical laughing and screaming. The careers waiting behind cringed a little. A couple blows of the mace later, a cannon sounded and Hansel's mangled body lay on the ground.
