Wow this week has just flown by! I had to check the date a few times until I believed that it really was Friday! It was so good to see you all so invested in the Dylex relationship! Thank you to GeekGirl5000, PinkFluff97, ddrawers96, BeautyIsEverywhere, principlelives51, and gypsy rosalie for the reviews :) Sorry if the last chapter saddened you all.
Chapter 25: Coincidence
'Come on Hayley, I want to get to the museum soon so we can spend a few hours there!' Alex called from downstairs. Hayley groaned, this was her and Alex's first bonding outing, but seriously a few hours in a dusty old museum, Alex was just setting herself up for failure. Still, she grabbed her handbag from the bed and went down to where Alex was waiting, grabbing the car keys off of the table by the door.
'So how are you feeling today?' Hayley looked at her little sister. It had been almost a week since the break up and she was finally looking a little more like herself.
'Great, I'm super excited for this museum; you're going to love it,' Alex enthused. 'There's a dinosaur section, and they've just gotten a new exhibition in which I know you're going to love!'
'Can't wait,' Hayley muttered. 'So how are you feeling about Dylan right now? I mean you've probably seen him in the cafeteria.'
'Not yet, Sanjay and I are friends again so he's been getting my lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays,' Alex explained.
'That's a good idea,' Hayley nodded. 'But you're going to have to face him eventually, that's the thing about breakups.'
'I know that, but not until I'm ready,' Alex sighed. 'I just need to heal for a little bit, Dylan was my first real boyfriend.'
'What about that Italian guy you met at the ranch?' Hayley raised her eyebrows.
'We kissed twice and then had a long distance relationship; I don't think that really counts,' Alex chuckled.
'I dunno, you seemed to take it pretty seriously,' Hayley teased.
'Yeah, well when you're a nerd you take any kind of male attention pretty seriously,' Alex laughed. 'But now I know there's a lot more to a relationship.'
'Well I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with your first real boyfriend, and I'm sorry my actions probably made things worse.'
'It wasn't a bad experience, it was absolutely lovely,' Alex corrected her sister. 'It was just the fact it ended which sucks.'
'The ending to any relationship sucks,' Hayley agreed. 'It's hard to just sever a bond like that. Trust me; I've been there many, many times.'
'When Dylan and I were first starting to get interested in each other I remember wishing I could talk to you,' Alex smiled. 'You have so much experience dating it would've been good to get some advice.'
'Well I'll be here for the next one,' Hayley said, 'and probably every one after that.' Alex shot her a funny look at the barely audible comment but said nothing.
'Here we are,' Alex looked up as Hayley pulled into the parking lot.
'This is your area of expertise,' Hayley looked at her younger sister. 'Are you going to guide me through the wonders of history?'
'Try not to sound so sarcastic,' Alex smirked. 'My name is Alex, I'll be your tour guide this morning, please keep to the left as you follow me.'
'Urgh, you sound like Dad,' Hayley grimaced.
'I know, I heard it as soon as I said it,' Alex looked dismayed.
'That's okay, come on, and stop trying to be funny,' Hayley warned.
'Got it,' Alex rolled her eyes. 'Now the surprise exhibition which I said you were going to love is just here.'
'What is it?' Hayley asked as they stopped in front of the wall plaque introducing the exhibition.
'It's a collection of 18th Century fashion,' Alex explained. 'Don't give me that look, it's not like looking at Grandma's old clothes, these clothes were worn by the rich and the dresses are so beautiful.' She led Hayley into the room.
'Wow,' Hayley uttered as she stopped in front of a huge Rococo style dress. She pressed a hand against the glass as her eyes followed the gold embroidered pattern. As she looked at the dress, she imagined herself wearing it in the court of a French noble while she sipped tea and chatted to other ladies. The green and gold colours would look amazing against her olive complexion, she decided. Alex was delighted that Hayley seemed so interested in the exhibition. She had felt that now Hayley didn't have an image to maintain for her friends that she might be a little more open minded about stuff like this and maybe actually find she enjoys it.
'That is one of Madame Pompadour's dresses. She was the main mistress to Louis XIV and lived in the chateau with him and his court. She's famous because she managed to convince the king to become just friends with her after a while and he still spent heaps of money on her dresses, portraits of her and even built little houses for them to meet,' Alex explained.
'Woah really?' Hayley tore her eyes away from the dress to gawk at her little sister. 'She must've been beautiful.'
'Apparently she was only average looking,' Alex shrugged. 'Still, she was often painted to look quite lovely in the portraits of her. Realistically though, it's hard to tell, it was the trend to wear really heavy make up in those days.' They walked around the exhibit for an hour, Hayley marvelling at each of the dresses in turn, imagining herself attending a fancy ball and bowing to royals. With a wistful sigh she let Alex drag her to the next exhibition.
'We should have brought Luke along,' Hayley giggled as she stared up at the huge assembly of bones. 'He loves dinosaurs and he would've gotten a kick out of these mechanical models.'
'I think he would've been quite bored looking at all the dresses though,' Alex pointed out. Suddenly Hayley felt her sister freeze beside her, and grip her arm rather tightly. 'Hide, it's Dylan.' She hissed, dragging Hayley back out.
'What is Dylan doing in a museum?' Hayley frowned.
'I got him interested in nerdy things while we were dating; he loves astronomy, mythology, and dinosaurs,' Alex explained. 'I should've known he'd be here!'
'Like you could've known,' Hayley scoffed. 'It's not like he would spend every day here just because he likes dinosaurs.'
'So you think it's just a coincidence?' Alex asked to eyerolls from her sister.
'Are you going to go and talk to him?'
'Why would I talk to him?' Alex looked horrified at the thought.
'Well you've got to do it sometime, the sooner you talk to him and realise you no longer have feelings for him, the sooner you move on with your life.'
'I still have feelings for him though,' Alex hissed. 'I don't have to talk to him to know that. I'm not ready yet, let's just go and look at another exhibition.'
'Okay, I'm not really interested in dinosaurs anyway,' Hayley allowed her sister to drag her away. She hadn't quite realised the effect Dylan had on Alex.
So this was just a short fluff chapter, but it makes me happy that Hayley and Alex are mending their relationship. As always reviews are welcomed, I love hearing from each and every one of you :) Until next week, Keep Calm and Mourn Dylex.
