The staring. The whispering. It was all getting to be too much. Evelyn plopped herself down on a bean chair in the library and sighed. Lily and Catherine sat down next to her.
"Hey, it's okay." Lily said comfortingly.
"It's not that horrible looking, is it?" Evelyn's voice cracked.
Catherine shook her head. "No, of course not. People are just mean sometimes. Here, look at me."
Evelyn looked up. "See? You look fine." Catherine said with a smile.
People had varying reactions to seeing Evelyn in this state for the first time. Lily had felt extremely bad for Evelyn at first and acted a bit weird around her, seeing the scars on her face, until she realized Evelyn's indifference to them and calmed down.
Sirius had flinched and gave her a grudging apology for not being able to save her and walked away.
James had stared at her for what seemed like hours before giving her a smile. "Thank you. Thank you so much for doing that for me." James had said.
Evelyn had merely shrugged and responded lightly. "It's not like I lost anything important from it so it's all good."
Peter had wisely chosen to pretend as if nothing had happened and treated her just as kindly as he always had.
Catherine was a tad complicated. At first glance, Catherine didn't seem to recognize Evelyn and simple walked past her in the hall until Evelyn pointedly waved at her during lunch that day. Her eyes had become so wide that day it was comical. She had stared at Evelyn much like James before Evelyn rolled her eyes, bowed, and said, "I'm so happy that I could entertain you today."
Once Catherine apologized, Evelyn gave her a blow by blow of the events that had occurred. She had changed around the story as to not exploit the Marauders of their secrets. Catherine quickly composed herself and told Evelyn that everything was going to be fine and that she looked beautiful as ever.
Julianna on the other hand, had been completely mortified. "Who messed up your face?! It's ruined! More so than before!" She cried. Lily almost strangled her but Evelyn held her back.
"I don't know, it looks kind of cool to me." Evelyn said defensively.
"The scars have made her delusional!" Julianna had exchanged glanced with Lily and Catherine, both of which were glaring at her and she chose to drop it.
"I just realized something." Evelyn said in horror, pulling Lily out of her head.
"What?" Lily said in a concerned tone.
"If I ever had even the slightest chance with Remus, it's gone now."
"How?" Catherine frowned.
"He's not going to date anyone if he thinks he's harmful to everyone."
"I don't want to go." Evelyn said quietly.
"This is our last year at Hogwarts. After this, you need to get a job so you have to get the grades." Lily lectured.
Evelyn slowly got up and sighed. "Fine."
"If you really need it, I can put glamours on you." Lily said carefully.
Evelyn stared at herself in the mirror. "Yes plea-" She cut herself off. How could she be that stupid to almost accept the offer? "No. No, it's okay. I don't need them."
Evelyn walked into class with her head up high and ignored the whispers from her peers.
She headed over to Professor Dylan. "I'm sorry I haven't gotten the Defence homework done, It's been fairly hectic for me recently and I know that's not an excuse but I still am very sorry."
He smiled kindly at her and waved her closer to him. She looked behind her, no one was there. He was motioning to her? She hesitantly moved closer to her Professor.
Professor Dylan was known for always wearing turtlenecks. When he started rolling the fabric lower on his neck, Evelyn shifted uncomfortably. "Profess-"
"Don't worry. Just look."
She stared at his neck. Claw marks. "Werewolf?" She whispered.
He nodded. "You're braver than I thought, Miss Reeves."
Evelyn would have scoffed if she hadn't been in the presence of a Professor. "How?"
"I got this at a later age than you, maybe two years older." He said rolling the fabric up back onto his neck. "But I've never been able to walk confidently like that without trying to cover my scars up, and yours are worse to boot."
Evelyn's eyes lit up. "Thank you, Sir. I have something I've wanted to do for a while now and you just have me the boost of confidence to do it."
"Remus!" Evelyn called.
Remus turned around and smiled. "Hey, anything you need?"
Evelyn grinned. "I need to tell you something."
"Okay, go for it." Remus raised an eyebrow expectantly. Evelyn was a little put off by the fact that Remus seemed amused but she shook it off.
"I fancy you. I really like you." Evelyn blurted out.
"What do you mean?" Remus asked warily, his entire demeanour going from teasing to guarded.
"I mean my feelings for you can be compared to how James likes Lily and how I liked Black. I like you, like that." Evelyn smiled.
"Evelyn, I hurt you. You can't possible like me." Remus countered. He took a step back.
"But I do! I really, really like you." Evelyn said desperately, taking a step forward.
"Well," Remus said, taking another step back. What was he going to say? His stomach was doing flips. This was what he wanted, right? He bit his lip. He already hurt her, he couldn't do that again. "It's unrequited. I'm sorry, I have to get I class."
Evelyn stood there, heartbroken, while she watched Remus walk away.
Shouts were heard from both ends of the Common Room.
"You did what?!" James cried.
"I. Rejected. Her." Remus snarled at James.
"Why?!" James and Peter yelled.
"Why do we have to talk about Evelyn?" Sirius whined.
"Reeves to you." Peter said as he shoved Sirius away.
"Why would you do that?" James groaned.
"Why do you care?" Remus snapped.
"It was one in a million! I didn't think she liked you back! And she does, so you turn her down?"
"I'm a werewolf." Remus said in a hushed voice so no one else could hear. "I've hurt her enough already. I can't do that to her. I can't put her in more pain for my desires."
"She clearly doesn't care about that. Even after she found out about your 'Furry Little Problem', even after you almost murdered her, she still confessed to you. Don't you get it? You're fucking lucky to have someone like you like that so don't you waste the chance for something stupid like this." Peter huffed.
Remus closed his eyes. "I need to get some rest."
"No, you need to make a decision. Now." James snapped.
"About what?"
"Either you go after her now, or I'm going to put you on as many dates as I can to knock some sense into you because she's the one." James glared at Remus.
"I'm not going to go after her." Remus said, and walked up to the Boys Dormitories.
"Shit." James cursed.
"I can't believe him." Lily repeated for the umpteenth time.
"I think he's scared of how I look." Evelyn cried.
"That's not true."
"Isn't it?" Evelyn said pathetically.
"I need to talk to Potter."
"That's just great." Evelyn said to herself after Lily walked away. "Leave me in my time of need. It's appreciated!" Evelyn shouted deliriously.
Evelyn turned to see three fourth year girls whispering and pointing at her. Evelyn glared at them. "What the bloody hell are you looking at?!"
The three girls jumped back and ran up to their dorm.
