Light slowly came to. Blinking to clear the haze that seemed to surround him he slowly pushed himself up onto his hands and knees. Lifting his head he gazed around trying not to panic when all he saw around him was whiteness. It wasn't exactly a white light more of a pearl coloured hazy fog.

Standing he glanced around. He didn't feel as if he were in any danger; however, the effect of his surroundings were unsettling in different ways. The area seemed to permeate sadness, as if it had been witness to a great tragedy. And that even though many years had passed that one moment in history still felt fresh as if the wound had just been dealt the other day and not so long ago.

"Hello?!"

Light listened as his voice echoed around him muffled by the fog that was pressing down on him. No one answered back and it only made him feel increasingly lonely. He could feel eyes on him that seemed to be just out of sight, almost like silent witnesses just out of eyesight. Rubbing his right arm he slowly shuffled forwards.

The fog slipped around him like a warm blanket as it passed around him. He walked a little ways not exactly knowing how far he had travelled. It didn't feel as if he had been walking for that long when out of the slight mist he saw the vague outline of a large shadow.

Squinting he made his way closer. When he got within a few yards of the shape he finally realized what it was. It was the Tree of Life that stood on the werecats mansion grounds. Although there was one major difference, this tree was budding with life. Large fruit hang from it's branches, the leaves were a beautiful shade of light green something you would only see in paintings. It's boughs were large and strong curving gently towards the sun. Light could make out a few squirrels and other small rodents and birds flitting through the leafy branches high above.

Suddenly, a ray of sunshine shone out from the mist and fog and lit up the clearing. The warm rays seemed to force the mist to retreat into the farthest reaches of the clearing where the rays weren't touching as they lapped at the edges, not being able to come any closer. It was only then that Light realized that he was standing on lush grass, wildflowers also grew around the tree and it's knotted roots that came up through the ground everywhere around it's base.

That's when Light noticed a figure standing at the base of the tree looking up at it. The man had short dark hair, broad shoulders, a strong posture and a commanding air about him. He felt as if his mouth had dried at seeing the figure.

The figure turned slowly and Light finally looked upon the face of the man that was looking out at him from the picture only a little while ago. Deynor, the first and last Dragon King.

"Light," the commanding dulcet tones of Deynor echoed out through the field, "I've been waiting here for you for a long time."

Light swallowed. "Deynor?" he asked in a whisper.

Deynor smiled at him and slowly nodded. "Hello, my love."

"But…but I. How is this even possible?"

Folding his hands in front of himself Deynor slowly began to walk towards Light. Closing the gap between the two with each step.

"For thousands of years I have been here. Tending to the tree on this side of the veil as I did so in my life I do so in death. But I have also been awaiting your arrival, Light."

"My arrival?"

"Yes," Deynor said with a small smile. "I knew that you would be reborn again one day, Light. You see that is the great circle of life, a pattern that we as living beings are made to repeat over and over again. And even when the universe itself dies it will restart again, fresh and new for us to keep on living."

"What exactly are you trying to say?'

"I'm saying, Light that you need not fear the past, present or the future. Everything is preordained. Everything happens for a reason."

"Even what happened to us?"

Deynor cocked his head to the side at the question.

"Are you telling me it was our destiny to die the way we did. Cruelly and without any chance of being able to live out our lives together?"

"We had some good times when we were together."

Light's face scrunched up at that. "I don't remember any of that!" Light turned away from Deynor hiding his face from the Dragon King. He didn't want the King to see him in this state, weak and immature…it would disgrace him.

"Light, look at me."

Light bit his lip. He didn't want to turn around and face Deynor. Not after his little outburst to the late dragon therianthrope.

"Light, please."

Closing his eyes tightly, Light slowly turned once more to face him. Opening his eyes he looked into the gentle violet gaze of the large king. The King offered him a small smile in encouragement and Light couldn't help the small feeling of giddy joy well up from deep within.

"Do you know where we are?"

Frowning at the question he glanced around in confusion.

"Should I know?"

"I believe in order to have come here you have touched the scepter, have you not? Which means the two of you have found each other once more."

"Well I did, but that still doesn't explain where we are and how I'm seeing you."

"The scepter sent you to where you needed to be the most, Light. We are in your mind."

"My mind?"

Deynor nodded.

"But how?"

"The sceptre is very close to you. It was gifted to you by someone all powerful and it won't answer to anyone but you and you alone. I'm hazarding a guess that the reason we are in your mind is that it sensed this was the place you needed to be the most. So here you are."

"Wait, the scepter was given to me by someone all powerful? Who?"

Deynor regarded Light with a steady gaze at that question. "Our creator."

Light scoffed in disbelief. "God? You're telling me God just handed me over a sceptre?"

"Not the God that is recognized in Christianity among billions of the world's population today, no. Our creator, Gaia."

"Gaia."

Deynor hummed in answer. "Who's to say that all the Gods of the world are not one God? That they are all mixtures, each one having a characteristic of one almighty entity. Maybe that's all religion really is."

"Are you insinuating that Gaia is God and that God is Gaia? I don't know, Deynor. I think if you went and tried to preach that in some churches you would be burnt for those claims even in this day and age."

Deynor chuckled. "Perhaps. It's a good thing that I'm dead then isn't it?"

Light sobered up at that comment. He looked down at the grass below his feet and shuffled anxiously from side to side.

"What's wrong, Light?"

"It's just…I wish I could remember."

"Remember?"

"All of my lost memories from my prior life. I wish I could remember the two of us. What even happened to us? All the good…the bad. Everything."

Deynor seemed pained at hearing his explanation. "Light," the Dragon King sighed tiredly, "what you speak of…what you ask for is not something that is done lightly. You were reborn specifically without your memories and it was in an effort to make sure your psyche stayed intact. What happened to the two of us, to all the therianthropes as a whole five thousand years ago, almost killed you in and of itself. Whether Misa had struck the killing blow or not you were so unhappy by what was transpiring back then that you couldn't deal with it. Your memories are locked and locked for a good reason."

Light swallowed harshly at Deynor's words. "Be that as it is Deynor I don't think I can live through this life without knowing. I know it was a harsh time and many therianthropes died. The chameleon and dragon race were even driven to extinction because of Misa's actions. But I really need to know."

Light locked his eyes with Deynor's violet gaze. He could see the internal battle raging behind the violet orbs in front of him. Holding fast Light stood his ground, he couldn't back down to this. Not anymore. He had sworn to Ryuk, Teru and Shiori that he would stand up and be what the pride, no, what all the therianthropes needed in him. And that started now.

Deynor seemed to see the change in Light's eyes. His own gaze slowly softened and the lines around his mouth and eyes smoothed out somewhat at seeing his look of determination.

"You have grown, Light," Deynor said gently. "Five thousand years ago I always said you were more mature for your age but seeing you now…I see you have gotten stronger. Perhaps you are ready after all."

Supressing the shudder of relief Light offered the dragon a small smile in return for the compliment.

"Do you know why this place is shrouded in mist, Light?"

Glancing around the clearing in confusion he slowly shook his head "No…why?"

"It's because before now you never remembered your past life. You kept yourself in a fog of denial and protection. You weren't ready to know the truth, to remember what had happened. It was a defensive action one that you enacted as much as we helped to shield your consciousness from the truth. When someone goes through something traumatic they wall themselves off to the experience. Whether they close off their emotions, or lock the memories away behind an iron bound door and throw away the key thereby forcing themselves to forget. That's what happened with you, Light. This fog acts as your own door keeping out your memories and keeping your psyche safe."

"How do I clear it?"

"Only you can do that. When you're ready."

"But how?"

"Accept it."

Frowning Light glanced around the clearing. He didn't understand. What exactly did Deynor mean by accept it? Hadn't he already accepted it? Then why wasn't any of the fog clearing. The Dragon King didn't seem so inclined to readily hand him any answers. Instead he stood in front of him gazing down at him with his violet orbs.

Light closed his eyes as he began to think. What could he be missing? He had already stated that he wanted to see everything. To know exactly what had happened thousands of years ago so what was wrong? Was he still subconsciously blocking his memories out still? Were thousands of years of blockage starting to make itself known to him? Would he ever be able to lift this accursed fog?

A strong will and conviction surged up within him quickly and suddenly taking him by complete surprise. He felt a strong warmth come up through him and focus on his right hand. A long cylindrical objet materialized suddenly and Light opened his eyes to stare in wonder at what he was grasping.

The sceptre that he had taken from Matsuda sat within his grasp glowing and pulsing with power. Another set of hands wrapped around his as he gazed down at the sceptre. He looked up to Deynor in awe. The Dragon King smiling down on him offered a nod of encouragement. Smiling back Light took his left hand and grasped the King's hand with his own as they both raised the sceptre high above themselves.

A strong power pulsed outwards washing over them shining into the farthest reaches of the clearing. When it reached the clouds of fog on the outskirts the most amazing thing happened. The fog turned into blue winged butterflies taking to the air in a storm of fluttering wings.

They spiraled upwards to the top of the great tree winding around it's large boughs. It was like a storm of the purest rain. A large shape swooped through the swarm of butterflies scattering the small insects around it's large body.

Light's mouth dropped open as a large dragon opened it's maw jets of fire streaming from deep in it's chest. The scales shone like a giant red ruby through the sea of blue as the long neck stretched high towards the sky roaring upwards to the highest branches of the tree.

The dragon itself was huge. His back legs were the size of large tree trunks, his claws probably about six feet in length at least as his large ivory teeth flicked in the warm glow of the fire as it bathed them in it's intense heat which Light could feel from where he was standing. His large tail whipped through the air creating a deafening boom throughout the clearing.

"That's one of the dragon therianthropes?"

Deynor smiled. "Indeed it is. That dragon right there was my second in command at the time, Landon. Me and him grew up together. He was my most trusted friend."

Light looked up at Deynor. He appeared sad and reminiscent of a time long past. The great wing beats of the dragon dragged his attention back towards the large reptile as it climbed up into the sky.

As Light glanced around he noticed that the butterflies disappearing still around the area were clearing up more and more of the surrounding area. And as he watched in rapt fascination he noticed the pride's mansion come into being before him. The large sweeping walls, turrets and windows came forth shining in the afternoon sun.

And all around him on the grounds and up in the tree he saw the dragons lazing around in the late afternoon sun. They were all colours of the rainbow. From baby blues, to deep greens, pinks, yellows, oranges, reds and even some more neutral colours like browns, tans and dirty greens. There was even one or two that were black and one that was white.

Light startled slightly at feeling a hand drop down onto his shoulder. Turning around he gazed at Deynor as the Dragon King stood behind him.

"I think Light it's time you remembered what happened fully and completely."

"Isn't that what's happening right now?"

"Well, not exactly. I'm the missing piece. Are you still sure that you want to remember everything? One last warning my love, it won't be easy for you."

Swallowing Light slowly nodded. "I still want to remember."

Nodding, Deynor leaned forwards. Slowly he placed a kiss on Light's forehead.

Light felt a jolt and then everything went black. He came to shortly after. The first thing he felt was a warm feather soft mattress underneath him and lush pillows surrounding him. Opening his eyes he slowly sat up in the grand king sized four post bed and gazed around the room.

It was beautiful. The room was a light cream colour with accents of baby blue interspersed throughout the room in the furniture, rugs, pictures and the bed.

"Light," a voice asked from the doorway, "are you ready for today?"

He glanced up towards the doorway seeing Deynor standing in the opening. Smiling he stepped out of the bed and walked up towards the Dragon King. Grinning he leaned upwards on the tips of his toes and kissed him lightly on the lips.

"Morning, love," Light murmured quietly. "You know how much I love you right?"

Deynor smiled and leaned down giving Light a kiss back. "I do. And do you know how much I love you as well? I'm the luckiest therianthrope alive to have you as their mate."

Nuzzling into each other Light murmured, "You are the luckiest man alive, that's not a lie."

Chuckling Deynor placed one last kiss on his forehead then stepped back. "Get dressed love. The chameleon queen is coming today."

Light smiled up at the King then walked over to their closet.

London, England

Just in front of Big Ben

~x~

L was crouched on the ground right beside Light's comatose body. Since the bright flash of light when Light had touched the sceptre everything had come to a standstill. Misa had quickly taken off, scaling Big Ben then launching herself into the sky taking off high above the city using her powerful bat wings to carry her aloft.

L had been glad to see her go, although it came at the cost of Light lying comatose on the cold sidewalk.

Quiet foot falls came up from behind him as Romulus kneeled down beside L taking in Light's unconscious form. Sighing he looked up at Big Ben where they had last seen Misa just five minutes ago.

"L," Romulus began quietly, "we should move Light to a more secure location. We can put him within the catacombs, Misa won't be able to get to him from there."

L remained silent as his unblinking gaze took in Light's calm features. The sceptre was still clutched in his kitten's hand a soft glow surrounding them almost in their own private bubble.

"L-"

"I heard you Romulus. Give me another five minutes, if he hasn't woken-"

"L, you and I both know he can't stay here another five minutes."

L remained silent at that. Near and Mello along with the two other kittens, Teru and Ryuk, and Shiori approached silently.

"Alpha, respectively we agree with Romulus," Near said quietly, a white robe tied around himself. "The longer Light stays in the open the more danger he is susceptible to."

L knew that Romulus along with his second were right. However, he was worried about Light. What if they moved him and they weren't supposed to thereby exacerbating injuries that they just couldn't see? Yet with Misa flying around just above London anywhere it wasn't a smart idea to have Light in an exposed area when they knew the rogue therianthrope was within reach.

Turning back to his second and third he nodded to the two of them.

"Take Ryuk, Teru and Shiori into the catacombs with the other wolves. Make sure you stay near them so that nothing else happens to them and they don't come up with any more creative ideas. When we return to the rest of the pride you three will have much to answer for along with my mate here."

Teru, Ryuk and Shiori appeared properly chastised for the time being as they bowed to L.

"Yes alpha," the three of them intoned quietly and reverently to L hoping not to incur any more wrath.

Nodding at the show of submission L watched them turn away to head back to the parliament building and the palace many stories below.

Turning back to Light L slowly scooped the kitten gently into his powerful arms. Holding him close to his chest he walked after the members of his pride. Looking down at Light's face his gaze softened slightly.

"Come back to me, Light," he whispered so softly that no one heard.
