'HQ to Alpha Team. You should be nearing your destination. You'll see a tenement building up ahead that's the Ace of Spades. The UN staff that have been taken hostage are inside. Proceed with extraction.'
Neve gave her next set of orders. Looking out of the window she could see the target with it's huge neon sign clearly along with many of the rooftops further down that Alpha Team would probably use to get there. Sure enough with the use of her binoculars she soon saw Piers and Chris heading over that way, using the makeshift scaffolding and gangways the J'Avo were using to get about from building to building.
'I've got visual on Alpha Team Guys.' She called out to the others. Charlie team had managed to retreat and regroup in a short amount of time so Neve re-routed them over to the Three of Diamonds location after requesting assistance. Hopefully they would get sorted down there then head over to the Ace of Spaces and provide assistance. The sound of an explosion could be heard in the distance, it sounded like an RPG to Neve.
Just where in the hell did these guys get all this gear from? She wondered. Soon enough they received a message from one of the guys on Alpha Team.
'HQ. Piers and Chris have gone on ahead to the target. Requesting further back up.'
'Copy that. HQ to Bravo. Alpha needs to move out to the Ace of Spades. Can you relieve them?'
'Roger. Coming in from the Four of Hearts. En route to assist.'
Neve with her laptop in one hand and marker in the other, scribbled more notes down on the wall she had drawn the map on. Claire was getting ready to request air evacuation for the hostages whilst David was busy relaying information back and forth to the teams. Matt however had taken up residence at the window to spot anything when Neve was busy co-ordinating everyone.
'Bravo to HQ! We're taking some serious heat over here! I don't think we'll make it in time to relieve Alpha!'
'HQ. Copy that.'
Neve groaned. Looking at the map she had drawn, it seemed like the amount of enemies who were heavily armed were now making their way up to the Ace of Spades and were delaying Bravo team in getting there in time. Hopefully it wasn't too much for them and they'd get there soon as Piers and Chris were making their way to the target on their own.
'Chris to HQ. We're at the Ace of Spades.'
Neve had to take a deep breath for a moment before she answered.
'Copy that.' She replied sounding a little indifferent. 'Bravo team has been dispatched now to assist with search and rescue. Standby for further instructions.'
That was the first time she'd actually said anything to Chris since they got him back. It stirred some emotions in her; he still didn't remember who she was and her voice didn't seem familiar to him she thought. She grabbed an extra pair of binoculars and joined Matt by the window to look down at the rooftop where Chris and Piers were. They were just stood waiting for their back up to arrive before going in to the building.
All of a sudden, Neve watched as massive floodlights turned on outside the building and more J'Avo come flooding out through the doors., way too many for Chris and Piers to handle on their own and only God knew what their ammo situation was like.
'I fucking knew this would happen, where the hell are all these guys coming from!?' Neve exclaimed as she slammed down her binoculars. 'Claire, radio Bravo Team and tell them to get a shift on. Me and Matt are going up top so you're in charge for now.'
'Yes Ma'am.' Claire replied. She quickly sent the word out to Bravo Team as Neve grabbed the bulky case the Barrett rifle was in along with two sets of ear defenders. Matt quickly followed her with his own binoculars out in to the penthouses hallway and up the short flight of stair to the roof exit. Luckily the rooftop had a nice flat ledge all the way round that Neve could rest the Barrett's bipod on to give her more stability. Matt's binoculars probably had a better distance range on them compared to the scope on the Barrett, but it was a decent long range scope good up to around fourteen hundred metres. Neve was glad that there wasn't any wind to throw a bullet off but she still had to take gravity and bullet dropping over the distance from the gun to the target, not only that but firing a Barrett meant you usually had to aim slightly lower than usual. Matt had spare magazines ready to reload should Neve need them and had already spotted what would be her first target. He quickly radioed through to Piers, just before he put his ear defenders on.
'Hey Piers its Matt. Neve's got you covered with the Barrett, Bravo team won't be there any time soon.'
Neve had already acquired her first target in her sights. The J'Avo were mutating in to a stage five mutation, they had all started to sprout wings. She pulled the bolt back charging the Barrett with its first round. Neve took a few deep breaths in and out then gently squeezed the trigger as she held her breath as she fired. The Barrett let off an almighty bang and juddered back in to Neve's shoulder showing just how powerful it was. The gun should have sent Neve flying on to her back but she knew how to handle this gun. The now flying J'Avo for some reason were upside down, their heads were dangling around as their legs seemed to have sprouted the wings they had. Neve knew where she was aiming now after her first shot . If she aimed slightly higher than where their thighs were just nearly at the knee then the bullet would his somewhere round the chest or even the neck. The first bullet tore through her target and left quite a big hole. It took one bullet from Piers aimed at the head to completely finish it off.
Neve had noticed that Chris was busy looking for where the shot had come from. She grinned to herself slightly before lining up her next shot. Matt navigated her to the closest J'Avo just about to close in on Chris but Neve took its head clean off. Apparently Chris didn't know who was doing it. She heard Piers had switched to the private channel he had with her and could hear what the pair were saying, her earpiece still working pretty good under her ear defenders.
'Who the hell is shooting?' She heard Chris ask Piers.
'Neve is.' Piers replied, taking aim at the nearest J'Avo that was swooping in. Neve watched Chris through her scope as he fired off a few shots looking slightly confused at the mention of Neve as if he was trying to remember her. She had already cracked off another shot that hit one of the J'Avo in its wings and sent it careering in to the wall, sliding down it somewhat comically. Chris dove over to the creature and swiftly dove his ginormous bowie knife straight in to its skull, killing it instantly.
A few more J'Avo had flown in out of nowhere. Apparently they weren't giving up any time soon. Neve had quite a few round left in her current magazine so she concentrated on the flying J'Avo. She took a few more down, landing some killer shots before she noticed more of them had actually started climbing up the sides of the building to get to Chris and Piers. The enemy reinforcements were a lot more erratic in movement than the flying J'Avo so Neve decided to stand down as she didn't want to risk hitting Chris or Piers as the rooftop wasn't very big and there was a possibility of them getting caught in the firing line. They had obviously caught on to the fact that someone was sniping the flying creatures. A helicopter suddenly appeared from nowhere and the reinforcements from Bravo team descended.
'I'll get the flying targets, you lot concentrate on the others.' Neve bellowed in to her radio, earning her a few "rogers" from the team. Matt pointed out the directions of the flying J'Avo for her to which she would instantly fire a round at. She was at the end of her magazine; ten shots. Bravo Team had helped mop up the rest of the hostiles quickly leaving everybody with nothing to fire at. Job done. A few of the soldiers gave a thumbs up in the direction that Neve was stationed in thanks for her helping out with the flying J'Avo. They took a few moments to have a breather and regroup before receiving their next orders.
'Didn't even need a spare mag.' Neve grinned at Matt as she removed her ear defenders. She went quiet for a moment as she heard Piers over the radio.
'Thanks Major, I didn't know how good you were at sharpshooting. I thought officers didn't get involved in infantry?'
'I haven't always been an officer Piers, I had to go through basic training like everyone else and I took up sharpshooting as a hobby.'
'That makes sense.'
'Anyway, take a moment to gather yourselves and ready for your next orders.'
'Yes ma'am.'
Neve and Matt made their way back down to Claire and David. Claire told Neve some info she had been sent regarding the hostages inside the building. Neve now had orders to issue.
'HQ to Alpha and Bravo team, we have your mission brief. There are hostages reported to be on the first and seventh floors, you need to rescue them then get out of the building. As soon as everyone is clear, we'll commence bombing.'
'Beer for the lady.'
'Oh, thanks.'
Chris handed Neve a bottle of Corona and sat at the patio table she had been sat at most of the day. It was the middle of summer and the UK seemed to be having a heatwave. Neve didn't like being too hot but she enjoyed being outside without having a huge coat on to keep warm. She had her big parasol up keeping her shaded from the blazing sun and a small paddling pool filled with water on the ground which she had her feet immersed in. The sounds of 70's music played on the little DAB radio Neve bought for use outside as she flicked through some old copies of Vogue magazine. Chris had decided to catch up on some work, writing reports and replying to emails on his laptop as he drank his beer.
'What time we going round to Matt's?' Chris asked Neve. Matt had invited Neve, Chris and the rest of the crew round to his for a barbeque seeing as the weather had been so nice. Neve had already been out shopping earlier that morning to get supplies to take round like a crate of beer and she'd even made a cheesecake to take too.
'About six thirty. I'll ring for a taxi in a bit get them pick us up around six or so.'
'Great. I'll get a shower soon.'
'Hmm maybe I'll join you.' Neve grinned and raised an eyebrow at Chris who just grinned back. 'Oh, when you due to go to Germany? Didn't you get a call the other day?'
'Tuesday next week. The training schedule got brought forward a week. I'll be back in London on Friday afternoon though.' Chris answered as he shut his laptop lid.
'Great, I can come get you then maybe we can go for dinner?'
'Sounds good. Remember we're both back in the States in a few weeks for the AGM.'
'Oh shit I nearly forgot about that.'
Neve often forgot important work dates but sometimes dumb little memories she never forgot. God only knew why right now in the middle of a warzone she was remembering a hot day and a barbeque from over a year ago. She had to try and concentrate, she had a job to do and people to look after under her command. It seemed like she was doing all the remembering right now and Chris was still in limbo. Neve just wished he'd remember something soon, but even then she wasn't entirely sure what she'd do if he did or didn't. She didn't even know if she could handle having him back or losing him to his amnesia. It was making her head hurt. Neve decided to keep busy, so she decided to redraw her map by grabbing a wet wipe out of one of her belt pouches in attempt to clean her previous map off the wall. She began drawing a crude map of the area around the Ace of Spades and a cross section of the building in question; waiting for Alpha and Bravo Teams to call in.
