9:00 pm
He decided to walk home because he had to blow off some steam. But as fate would have it, to get home as soon as possible, he had to pass Ally's house. Usually, in normal circumstances it was fine, convenient actually if he wanted to say hi. Ally would give him some cookies, an award-winning smile and he'd be off.
But now it only made Austin feel agitated.
As the quaint house with the neat garden (thanks to Ally) and the cleanly porch (again, thanks to Ally) appeared, Austin couldn't help but stare. How many times had he and Ally lounged around watching movies on her couch? Or talked just about everything on the hammock in the backyard? Or laid down on the grass, watching the clouds, on insistence from Ally? Or at night, under the stars?
What happened to those days? Those blissfully simple days. He missed Ally and her clumsiness. He missed her flowery perfume and her horribly bad puns. He missed their friendship.
He could see her light was on. She was home, probably calling Trish. He wasn't so eager to find out about her date anymore. It only made him sick.
Austin thought, confused, that he had never acted or felt this way before. He had never been so loathing of someone he just met, or ever so jealous. He had never felt sick or depressed about someone he liked being with someone else. His feelings were so poignant, it disturbed him.
Austin realized that he had stopped and had been staring up at Ally's window. How long had he done that? Hurriedly, and hoping no one had noticed, he fled from the scene.
"How was it?!" Trish excitedly asked from the other end of the line.
"It was everything I dreamed it would be," Ally sighed. "He was very gentlemanly, there were sparks, and he almost kissed me…well, he kissed me, but not kissed, uh, me?"
Her best friend seemed to already sound weary with Ally's inability to put together sentences. "I'm gonna need some clarification. Did he or did he not kiss you?"
"He kissed me – " Ally heard familiar squealing in the background and her eyebrows furrowed. " – on the cheek…" She put together the pieces. "Trish, are Austin and Dez with you?"
"No, just tweedledee. Tweedledum uh…left."
That was weird of him. If anything, Austin would have stayed with Trish and Dez. And if Austin left, Dez would have left with him, and Trish would have closed up shop. "Why'd he leave?"
She knew Trish was shrugging. "You can ask him," she replied stubbornly.
"Did he walk home?"
"Sure. I didn't hear any car so yeah, I guess."
"I'll update you later, Trish!" And with that, Ally hung up. She could grill Trish later about everyone's weird behavior. Right now she had to settle something with Austin. Something she had been wanting to do, but had been too nervous to do.
But she was feeling bold tonight. And this couldn't wait anymore.
Austin had plugged in his ear buds, ready to blank his mind to heavy metal. Too much turbulence was swirling chaos inside, and the best he could do to stop it was try to focus on something else.
He set the volume on high, ignoring Ally's voice inside his head telling him that raising the volume too high could injure his eardrums.
Suddenly something grabbed his arm and he jumped, one of the ear buds falling out.
A delicate hand plucked the ear bud out of the air. "How many times have I told you about this?" Ally asked, a playful smile on her face.
"What?! She's not even gonna tell us about her date?!" Dez cried.
Trish was angry too, but seeing the look on the redhead's face she couldn't help but smirk. "It's like you're more upset than I am. And I'm her bestest friend!" she exclaimed. Dez opened his mouth to argue, but before he could Trish added, "And I'm a girl."
He shut his mouth, thought about it, and opened it again for another argument. Trish held up a hand. "Don't." He grudgingly closed his mouth again. "I wonder why Ally would hang up. That's so unlike her…" she pondered aloud.
Dez thought about this for a bit. "Maybe she got kidnapped by aliens?"
She gave him a look.
"Hey, if you can't ever think of anything, you might as well stick to the classic scenarios."
"And why would aliens kidnap Ally?" She turned to him, amused. She had taken a higher tolerance to Dez. They were spending more time together and they had things to talk about because of all the drama. In a way, Ally's and Austin's and Elliot's love triangle pushed them to draw closer.
"To clone her," he said simply.
"Clone her?" Trish scoffed.
"Maybe they need an Ally to recreate French fries on their planet! Or maybe they want to make an army of Allys to take care of them and sing for them and read to their alien babies!"
"But Ally has stage fright," Trish pointed out.
Dez thought about this. "They can make Ally clones that don't have stage fright. Va-va-voosh!" Seeing the look on Trish's face, he explained, "Well, Austin says boom, Ally says bam, and you…well you just give looks, so I want to trademark something too. Va-va-voosh!"
"And how long did it take to make that one up?"
He was silent for a while. "Four days." Trish looked at him disbelievingly. "Okay, a week! But if you want a trademark, you have to think long and hard about these things!"
His hands were buried deep in his pockets, and Ally was holding her arms, rubbing them occasionally to withstand the chill of the night. Austin didn't notice, too busy trying to ignore the onslaught of butterflies fluttering furiously in his stomach.
He looked to the right, at the different houses and hedges and gardens. He couldn't help but be awkward. He was trying not to think about Elliot and Ally having a date that night, or how nervous he was just walking beside her, or how beautiful, inside and out she was.
And while he was trying not to think all those things, he couldn't help but think them.
"Austin?" she peeped.
Still looking away, Austin quipped, "Yup?"
Ally sighed, a bit annoyed. It was silent for a few minutes before she started speaking again. "All these houses are so nice."
"Mhmm."
"You ever think about all these houses? The lives that they hold?"
His head tilted toward her. He was now curious as to what she was trying to say.
"I mean, most of these houses aren't just houses to the people who live here. They are their homes. Just think about how many people we're passing as we walk down every sidewalk. We miss out on so many funny stories, or crazy adventures, or poignant tales."
"I never thought about it that way," Austin said quietly.
"Exactly. We never think about the person behind us in line or next to us in a movie theater. It's so sad sometimes how we could just walk past the most amazing person in the world and never think twice about it."
Austin studied her. Her makeup had faded and her hair had become a bit frazzled, but she still was stunning. The moonlight lit up the street in front of them as they walked, and it also hit Ally's face like a spotlight.
Oh the butterflies.
He almost turned away again, but thought about what Ally had said. "Why are you telling me this?" he curiously asked.
Ally shrugged. "It was just something I think about when I can't go to sleep. And all these houses reminded me of it." Seeming to change her mind about something, she added, "And you were pointedly ignoring me."
Austin scratched the back of his neck unconsciously. "You called me out," he said with a tight smile. How was he going to explain this?
"Austin, I know things have been weird between us." He stopped and looked at her. They were now standing in the middle of the moonlit street. She looked back up at him. "And awkward and uncomfortable and – "
"Yeah I got it." This was weird and awkward and uncomfortable.
"The point is, I don't want it to be anymore," she said, her doe eyes big, wide, and deeply brown. "I don't like how everything has been so…weird between us. I want us to go back to being us."
Austin felt a weight lift off his shoulders. "I feel exactly the same way. I want to hang out and talk like we used to!" Ally gave him the biggest grin, and he returned it. They both hugged.
"I missed you, Ally."
"I missed you too, Austin."
