Okay, I'm sorry that I didn't upload on Friday, I've had a very long work week and unfortunately the same thing is going on this week, well, not really unfortunate, it's nice to have a good sized paycheck.
I don't own Harry Potter.
Yang was the first side of the coin to wake up, groaning as he regain consciousness in his non-corporeal form and looked around. They were in the school's Hospital Wing and in one of the beds with the covers pulled up to his chin. Longsword was standing guard at the foot of his bed and facing out into the rest of the Wing. There was nothing that going to get past him and disturb his Captain's rest.
"Seriously? Can't he find something better to do?" said Yang with a sneer.
However, there was no response, no chastising from his counterpart, which sobered Yang up. Harry had not woken up yet. He was still lying motionless on the Hospital Wing bed, not pale or weak looking...just sleeping.
Hawkeye had this (as Yang so pleasantly put it) strange ability, he was able to emit a sort of tranquilizer through the palms of his hand and render people, children mostly, unconscious. He figured that all children, regardless of their families status in society, their upbringing or their parent's preferences...didn't need to be subjected to observing the heinous crimes that plagued society. The children in the immediate area would not only be surrounded with an almost impenetrable force field around themselves to stop anyone from hurting them (or hurting them further) but they would fall into a peaceful and forgetful sleep if they happened to catch a glimpse of his hands.
A Chief's Abilities: Once a Ranger hits the exclusive rank of Chief, they can choose to take on a higher level of ability, while most have an ability that can take on the criminals immediately in front of them, the higher level of ability enhancements take care of a much wider range.
A perfect example is the legendary Chief Arache, her first enhancement allowed her to produce sticky, web like secretion to hold her captives in their place, climb the sides of building and even swing upon the uncannily strong threads. Once she took the title of Chief, she underwent even further surgery which gave her the ability to form large, invisible webs that would slow and entrap anyone who wandered aimlessly into her clutches.
Her webs, if meticulously placed, could reach upwards of three miles. She never lost a criminal in her career as a Chief in the field.
Unfortunately, being considered young themselves, meant that they, Yin and Yang, too would be knocked unconscious. Hawkeye found it personally amusing to have one of the other Rangers take them out of the field and back to Headquarters to sleep it off. Lionus told them that Chief Hawkeye didn't want Yin-Yang in the fray, being children and all, and was one of their biggest opposing figures to becoming the Rangers they were now. But he couldn't deny the fact that they got excellent results when they were out.
Despite admitting that fact, it didn't stop him from either being overprotective or a just a plain jerk, Yin and Yang couldn't really agree on which one qualified better.
Yang watched as Dumbledore and Madam Pomfrey tried to coax Harry to waken. They pulled the covers down and waved their wands over the lad's torso and head, even pouring a few potions down in throat. Yang could only shake his head, there was no waking them when it came to Chief Hawkeye knocking them out.
Longsword turned around and spoke in his deep plain voice. "He will be out until he wakes up. No spell will quicken the recovery, it is best to let him rest."
"Are you really Rangers?" said Madam Pomfrey as she pulled the covers up closer to the boy's chin. "Or just imposters?"
"If you did not believe of what I am, you should not have let me in here to get at the rest of the students." said Longsword with a dull edge to his voice.
Madam Pomfrey made to snap at the man, but Dumbledore grasped her arm. "It's alright, Poppy."
Suddenly, Harry made a groan and his eyes fluttered open. "What...where...?"
"Harry, thank Merlin, are you alright?" asked Dumbledore placing a hand tenderly on the boy's brow.
Longsword watched as the boy flitted his eyes between Dumbledore and then onto himself, and if he had blinked, he would have missed it. Longsword faced away from his Captain, a shade of shame on his face. His Captain had to be rendered unconscious by the Ex-Chief, just to get him out of there without any further incident and damage to his cover. He should have...but that would have been against the orders of his Captain...a thing he swore he would never do.
"Yeah, I...I'm okay I think." said Harry, his voice soft. "What did that man do? Where's Montgomerys?"
Dumbledore shushed the still weary boy. "Easy lad, you're safe now...a Ranger came...and took possession of...Montgomerys. You won't have to worry about him ever again."
"Ranger, what's a Ranger?" asked Harry weakly.
"Oh, this ought to be good." said Yang rolling his eyes.
"You see Harry, the muggle world has their own criminal deterrents, Police Force, as you will...We, the magical world have Aurors but, there are some criminals that try and break through and accost the other side. Muggles who knew of us, attempting to just come across as weaker wizards but quite sly and cunning, would use our magic for their own selfish greed. They would convince the real wizards and witches into doing their bidding in the muggle world. Then there are wizards and witches that try and take control of the muggle world and force the muggles into slavery just because they cannot use magic. Montgomerys it seemed, was a sort of such terrible wizards." said Dumbledore.
"It is said, that when a wizard oversteps the barriers between magic and non-magical worlds and if they are heinous enough, the Rangers will come, and put an end to them." said Dumbledore.
Yang looked down at the man, trying to explain the apparent purpose of the Rangers to someone who was the Star Captain, the second in command of said organization. It was almost laughable, in fact he was laughing.
Though...he had to admit, the old man wasn't off the mark, so he knew of them fairly well...that was going to make things a mite more difficult if their cover was blown.
"So...he's gone...he can't..." said Harry.
"There has been no escape from their clutches for over four hundred years. He will not escape them, unless they release him. I don't believe, if what I could sense from him is to be believed, that the will never release him in this lifetime."
Harry heaved a great sigh and settled back in the cushions, his eyes drooping. "He's gone...he's really gone...and he's going to...pay for..."
And he fell back to sleep.
Dumbledore smoothed down Harry's hair and watched as the boy slept.
"So, is it over, did we get him?" asked Huntsman, "After he fell into that house, there was a barrier thrown up, I couldn't get in."
They were standing in the topmost branches of a high tree in the Forbidden Forest. Far from any centaur that would happen to gallop by and high enough to keep a firm watch over the surrounding area.
"Of course not, anything under a lieutenant is not permitted into a Chief circle." said Cosmo. "Only Longsword was able to get in."
Chief Circle: is part of the enhancement one gets with becoming a Ranger. It's a specialized shield that keeps criminals in and any outside interference out. This keeps the criminal isolated and away from anything that could be deemed detrimental to their capture. Only certain leveled Rangers are allowed to go in and out of a Chief Circle, that way the lower level Rangers do not come in and become a hinderance rather than a help.
However, that does not stop common animals from going in and out, magical creatures (other than a unicorn which are given free reign) are stopped by the shield.
"My pill bugs went in." said Ctenizidae. "They saw Montgomerys get captured, and they also saw him take the Captain hostage. But the Captain went all Chuck Norris on the bastard and got away."
"Watch your mouth." came Longsword's voice. "And he didn't do anything more than stamp on his foot and kick them man in the groin."
"Hey, how come you had to show yourself" asked Force. "The Chief won't like that."
"I was summoned by Chief Hawkeye, himself." said Longsword, "I responded."
Hunter whistled. "Damn, what did the ex-big-big boss want?"
"I was to escort Dumbledore and Captain Yin-Yang up to the castle, Chief Hawkeye took it upon himself..." said Longsword.
"To put the Captain to sleep." finished the rest of the battalion.
"I swear...he likes holding the Captain's age over him." said Cosmo.
"But you have to admit, it allows the Captain to stay undercover, he still hasn't finished the assessment." said Force.
"Have you anything else to report? The students or the staff acting oddly?" asked Longsword.
"That Lockhart bloke is a nice looker, but he's a creep." said Ctenizidae. "He's still muttering about the Captain's parents and how the Captain is a wonderful mix of the two, I think he's becoming a mite obsessed with him."
"Wish we could get away with putting people away that are just creepy." said Hunter with a dark chuckle. "Would make a few parent's sleep easier at night."
"Does the Captain want us to arrest him or not?" asked Cosmo.
"Not until he tries something untoward to either the Captain or the rest of the children., having thoughts such as that is disgusting enough, but until he acts upon those thoughts in any shape or form, we just wait." said Longsword.
Ctenizidae smiled wickedly. "What if one of us were to...give his...illicit desire a bit of a push?"
"What do you have in mind?" asked Longsword, a glint like that of a vigilante in his eye.
Harry returned to back to classes the next day, and if he wasn't already feeling slightly drained from the heavy relief of finally getting Montgomerys arrested, he was a little stunned by what Lockhart had done.
He was on his way back to Dumbledore's office to gather his Herbology book when he was cornered by the Defense Professor.
"Oh, Harry! I heard! I heard!" said Lockhart coming up to him, and it would have to be a deserted corridor with no pictures, students or ghosts. "I heard all about the unfortunate events in Hogsmede, I knew I should have come with you!"
"I'm fine, sir. I'm fine." said Harry looking up at Lockhart, fixing his eyes to look bright and innocent, and not the weary glaze Yang said he had. He didn't have time to deal with Lockhart's nonsense today, if he had seen how tired the youth was, no doubt he would have wanted to care for him...and he didn't have neither the patience or the drive to deal with him today.
"Now, Harry, I know that you are far from fine right now, but I want you to know...that I'm here for you, and if you want to talk about anything...let me know..." said Lockhart.
Then he did something that Harry, despite Lockhart being a complete idiot, didn't think he would do so soon after the attack in Hogsmede. He enveloped Harry into a tight embrace. Harry made it a point to struggle and say "What are you doing?" And then struggled even harder when Lockhart leaned further down and kissed his cheek.
"Sir!" said Harry pushing Lockhart away from himself further.
"Oh...dear..." said Lockhart, his eyes glazing over slightly, his pupils dilated and a roguish smile. He held fast the figure in his arms. He found he could not wait, it was too many years till the lad became a man, why could he not make him a man now? A simple aging potion was brewed or bought easily enough...and they could be together, could anyone not say they were destined for each other? Both were famous, good looking...and very skilled in their own rights. It had to be fate, he couldn't have James Potter or Lily Evans so...someone put the two of them together and made Harry Potter...best of both worlds.
He didn't even take notice of the struggle the young man was putting up and the constant cry of "Stop!" His mind set only on one thing and one thing only, taking Harry to his office and wooing him, of course, being who Lockhart was, he would be more than willing to...
"Lockhart!" spat a voice from further down the corridor.
He then snapped himself out of his fantasy and saw the Potions Master coming up from behind him, a furious expression on his face. The man saw the shocked look on Harry's face, staring at the Defense Professor and then over to Snape himself.
Snape whipped out his wand, petrified Professor Lockhart on the spot, took Harry by the shoulder and pulled him a little ways away.
"Are you alright? Are you hurt?" asked Snape sharply, yet he kept his words quiet.
"I...I..." stammered Harry staring at the petrified figure on the ground.
"What the f*ck got into him? I thought he was going to wait for us to grow up?" said Yang. "Then we were going to shoot him down and tell him we weren't into old farts!"
"I don't know...but...wait...this...smell...pheromones...Ctenizidae." thought Harry with a scowl.
"Come along, Potter, we need to get you to the Headmaster's." said Snape taking Harry once again by the shoulder. "I can assure you, Lockhart will never touch you again."
Harry looked up at the Potions master and allowed himself to be led away, with Lockhart in tow.
Later that night, Harry and Yang held a Ranger meeting high up on the tallest tower of Hogwarts, spells keeping anyone, living, dead or painting from seeing and overhearing them.
The Rangers of his company standing at attention, and looking down at the floor and not into the eyes of their Captains. Yang and Harry had separated for this occasion, both looking formidable in their special states. Harry, wrapped in a shimmering light, with large opalescent wings erupting from his back. Yang, a thick, condensed darkness surrounding his person and large black bat wings glowing with a venomous purple aura jutting out of his darker body.
The Rangers under their command stood in the middle of the Room, while the two parts of Star Captain Yin-Yang circled around them in opposite directions, passing each other occasionally, matching step for step.
"What did you think you were doing?" asked Yin with a stern voice.
"I...well..." said Ctenizidae. "We thought we...it could have..."
"It wasn't your place to force him!" snapped Yang. "You acted without orders!"
"We didn't force him, sirs." said Cosmo swiftly. "We only brought his...well..feelings closer to the surface."
"Don't mince what has happened and what his feelings were to ease your punishment." said Yin turning to Cosmo as he walked before her. "The fact remains that he would not have acted on in it at that time if you had not forced his mind to do."
"Normal officers do it all the time, they do reverse stings and what not." said Force.
"They don't fiddle with their brains with pheromones, they let the temptation sit there and see if they take the bait! That is what we were doing!" said Yang and Yin together, stopping suddenly at the same time.
Them talking and walking together like that scared them at times; it wasn't often the two of them would join or fuse together almost seamlessly. But when they did so in battle...it was truly something to see, and to run away from. Thankfully, they only melded together when they were out in an empty area and no one to become an accidental causality.
"If the man had resisted temptation, in a school full of what could possibly be his prey, than fine, he would have been out by the summer in lieu of a better candidate for the position." said Yin. "There was no need to push him over the cliff."
"If it quickens the results..." said Force.
"Not if we make the same moral decisions as the ones we're set out to capture and more preferably kill." spat Yang.
"We did our job, we removed a threat..." said Huntsman.
"That wasn't any part of any job description!" shouted Yang.
"We are the judge, jury and executioners...but that does not mean we can take it upon ourselves to force them to commit a crime." said Yin holding Yang back. He then turned to Ctenizidae, who was wringing her sleeves, a guilty look on her face.
"I'm sorry sirs." said the young Ranger. "I had used...well, pheromones...to...do it."
"We know that." snapped Yang.
"When did you do it?" asked Yin turning his back on his battalion and gazing over the moonlit night, Yang walking around and joining him on the drop off of the tower.
"This morning, I had left it in the morning lilacs he conjures for himself." said Ctenizidae with a somber look.
"So, if by any chance, I hadn't been the only one he fixated on, if there were others he wanted, to start his own harem, they wouldn't have been unable to fend him off?" said Yin, his voice dark, and laced with disgust.
"No!" said Ctenizidae in horror, "I made it so that it would only be activated by your scent..."
"That's a small favor, at least you thought to do that, as opposed to leave it blanketed for anyone." said Yin.
"We should let Chief Lionus know of this, he can dole out what punishment is fitting." whispered Yang with a scowl over to the rest of the Rangers, though it was a whisper, the others heard it plainly.
"No..." said Yin. "He would have them stripped of everything, lose their positions and jailed for their crimes." he kept his back to them and looked up at the moon. "This is all your one and only pass with me, do not do this again."
The Rangers looked at their Captain, blinking in disbelief, but nodded solemnly. Longsword bowed his head, and his knees, in submission to the Star Captain, as did the others.
"We swear sir, we will not do this again, not without your orders." said Longsword sincerely.
"You all...I see it in your eyes, you want to save everyone, heal all the wounds, solve all the problems and bring the entire planet into a time of peace.." said Yin. Then he turned around, the large full moon shining brightly from behind him. The Rangers looked up at their Captain, both sides of him.
His eyes, looked down on them, both Yin and Yang's, they were dark and hopeless.
"I fear..." said Yin.
"...you will know soon enough..." said Yang.
"You cannot save the world." said the Star Captain Yin-Yang.
