~Yes my beautiful piggies, this is the last chapter of the story. Thank you so much for sticking with me and reading the whole thing. Yes, there is a sequel, which is going to be announced in the second part of this chapter.~
Kendall waited and waited for James to return. As a few more minuets passed, going into half an hour, Kendall decided it was about time he went back to the apartment. Kendall stood up, wiping some dust from his legs as he did so. He walked to the door and started to pull it open when he stopped to sigh annoyingly. The door wouldn't open from this side of the door. So he had to wait for James. Just at that moment, as if on cue, James opened the door holding a large picnic basket.
"Face this wall and close your eyes." James commanded.
"There's no way in hell I'm going to listen to a jerk like you." Kendall spat. He knew it was unnecessary, but he was still pissed with James.
"Just do it, please. I would have set it up earlier but I totally forgot." James said as he walked away. Kendall shrugged and faced the wall that the door was connected to as he kicked a brick in the way of the door so the boys could get back inside.
"Seems like you to not be organized..." Kendall stated.
"Shut up." James yelled as he started setting things up. Things felt awkwardly silent as James continued to set up. The only sounds heard were the wind and the sound of James setting up. Kendall sighed to himself, thinking about just leaving James and going back to the apartment. But Kendall was a lot smarter then that. He knew that neither James nor him could handle living without each other, and if thing's continued to go on like this, they would have no idea how to live.
"Can I turn around now?" Kendall asked as the bricks of the wall started to get boring beyond belief.
"Whatever..." James said with an eye roll. Kendall smiled and turned around to look at James, noticing he was standing pretty close behind him. He couched a little then pushed past James, looking at what James had spent so long to set up. Kendall smiled warmly as he saw James had thrown a picnic rug out over the ground. The same rug that they used in Minnesota. A picnic basket was nicely set up with a ottle of wine and some snacks around it.
"I found that wine we were saving... from that time when we were in your pool..." James said as he grabbed Kendall's wrist, pulling him towards the rug. James sat down, watching as Kendall sat next to him hesitantly.
"I totally forgot about that wine..." Kendall said softly.
"I almost did... Look, I'm really, really sorry about everything... I was a selfish jerk who doesn't deserve to be with you..." James said softly. Kendall stared at James, speechless.
"James- I-" Kendall thought for a moment then looked away from him. "No. I- I can't forgive you. I gave up everything for you and you threw it in my face to get more. That's selfish and spoilt. I'm real proud that you realise this, but honestly, there's no way I can forgive you." Kendall said angrily. James could see the hurt in his eyes as he spoke, it was written all over his face and the way he sat; hands balled into tight fists as he sat with crossed legs.
"I understand. I want us to be really good friends though... and not just friends, but all I ask is one more night with you. One more night with you as a potential lover. Just one, final night... Of having you as mine." James said softly. Kendall looked over at him, sighing softly then moving to hug him tightly. hiding his face in James' neck.
"Then for now... For this moment, right here, tonight... I'll forgive you, and I'll love you. Then we're friends... right?" Kendall asked in a whisper. James would have joked saying 'friends with benefits?' or something stupid like that if it were any other time, but this wasn't like any other time, not even a little. Kendall sighed heavily, it felt like he had been sighing so much, but it was a reflex he couldn't help.
Just like on their first 'date'... The one in Kendall's back yard where they enjoyed each others company and jumped into his freezing cold pool, running into Kendall's room to dive for warmth under the warm, cosy sheets. They sat there in a slight awkwardness that they pushed away so they could fund a way to express their love for each other. A love that they both were going to find hard to push away.
They continued to sit with each other, laughing and holding hands as the day turned into a warm California night. The weather here was really a big difference to the weather back in cold Minnesota. They both loved it, a lot. They also knew they'd soon miss waking up to a cold morning where a yawn was seen with warm frost as the air escaped your lungs.
"James... It's getting late..." Kendall said as he stopped laughing from an old joke James had cracked.
"I know..." James said as a terrible feeling he could not name filled him. "I know..." He repeated.
"Should we go back?" Kendall asked with a sad expression.
"Before we do, can I have one last kiss?" James asked, hoping that he could put enough passion into one last kiss so he could have Kendall back, and they could secretly date. Kendall nodded as he moved so James could pack things up. Once James was packed up, placing the last bit of what he had away for their last date was painful in a way. Painful meaning he knew once they left the roof top... Once they walked down the stairs and back into their apartment... It was over, and neither of them would get it back. Kendall looked up at the starless sky that was covered in light's from the glowing city before he looked back at James. James sighed and moved closer to him, leaning down and closing his eyes, leaving their lips a few meters apart. Their lips lightly brushed as Kendall moved onto the tips of his toes. He pressed his lips to James', holding them there before moving and walking away.
"We really need to go before mum gets worried..." Kendall commented. James sighed, feeling his heart shatter like Kendall's did as the blonde opened the door and allowed the darkness to illuminate him. James followed, looking back out at the city before he followed Kendall inside. They walked back into the apartment, putting on fake smiles and acting like besties. What they didn't know is that until they could patch up their hearts and get over what had happened, they would have to continue being fake anyway. That's what Hollywood's all about though, isn't it? Being fake, impressing people... Being someone you're not.
James and Kendall did find it hard. Until Gustavo had their band, Big Time Rush record and film a video for their song Halfway There they felt terrible. They found it was a major struggle to get out of bed, waking up and knowing the other was there; their love. Over time, they really became close friends and they were no longer happening. Carlos, Logan, Jennifer, Katie, Kelly and even Gustavo had figured everything out that had gone down between James and Kendall, only no one spoke about it. They dared to bring up the topic. While doing Halfway There James and Kendall had finally finished slowly patching themselves up. Through all the crazy event's that were happening during that time, the song helped them realise something. James realised that he shouldn't be so selfish about his dreams as he was living the best life he could possible live, and he got to share it with his best friends and former lover. Kendall realised that this was a great opportunity, and although it won't last forever, he had to make the best of what he had, because this was in fact an opportunity that could only come once in a lifetime. Just like James' love, when he and the guys are done with BTR, this whole adventure would become a memory that he would cherish, and hold forever.. No matter what.
James and Kendall found it hard, but they could do it. They'd pass off as best friends, who were once lovers. They both eventually wanted each other back, but it was wrong, and neither of them could understand why.
