Matt and Christy arrived at the hospital and went directly into the emergency waiting room to wait on the ER doctor to tell them what was going on with Nancy. Both were grim as they thought back to the day that their father had been murdered. This entire situation seemed like a cruel trick played on them by fate. Matt looked over at Christy and saw that she was crying silently. He leaned over to her and pulled her into a hug to comfort her as well as to be comforted. He thought about calling Gabby but decided against it until he heard something from the doctor. He was just relieved that she was safe.
On the way to Lakeshore that carried Gabby the paramedics were not sure what they were dealing with. Shay had jumped into assist as soon as Gabby collapsed. Shay looked at the monitor as Gabby went into Vtach. "Damn it Dawson hang in there. You can't die on me like this. " Shay says as she works frantically to administer chest compressions. Chout who was the other paramedic gets the defibrillator ready to use and Gabby and says "Charging at 300, Clear." Both Chout and Shay hold their breath as they watch the monitor with the hope that Gabby's regular heart rhythm will be restored. The line remains flat and Shay says, "Damn it I can't lose you like this Gabby you have to fight! " Chout yells out as he uses the defibrillator on Gabby a second time, "Charging at 325, Clear". Again both Chout and Shay watch the monitor desperately wanting to see a regular sinus rhythm established but the line on the monitor remains flat. The ambulance pulls into Lakeshore ER and Shay informs the ER doctor. 27 year old female collapsed of unknown causes. She is in vtach and has not responded to 2 shocks from the defibrillator. The doctor begins chest compressions as she orders, " Push atropine stat." Shay follows the gurney in through the ER doors and watches as she is wheeled on the gurney while the doctor still performs chest compressions.
Back at the ceremony the members of 51 discussed everything that had happened including the fire and Gabby collapsing. Chief Boden and Severide decided to head to Lakeshore to find out the condition of Gabby, Kelly tried to call Matt several times but had not gotten any response just repeated voice mails. All anyone knew about Matt's mom at this point was that there had been some kind of emergency that Antonio had followed Matt to her house. Both Erin and Jay were still trying to get in touch with Antonio who was not answering their phone either. Meanwhile the memorial service went forward and the auction also continued in spite of the chaos. However the mood of the entire event had changed and each of the firefighters and members of the public dug deeper to give more. Again the firefighting community closed ranks as one of their own was in need again. After all they were a very large extended family and closed ranks as soon as one of them needed something. Each member of 51 and Morning side had a boot in their hand and they were going person to person to collect for Bryant's family, Gabby, and now to help with Casey's apartment fire. They felt it was the least they could do given the circumstances
Danny talked to his editor and lied saying that he was going to follow Gabby to the hospital to see about her condition. Instead ,Danny headed to his apartment to confront Claire about Gabby's collapse. He walked into his apartment and found Claire sitting on the couch smiling and looking content.
"What the hell did you do to Gabby? " Danny exploded as he glared at Claire walking toward her as if he would hit her.
"Relax, no one can trace this back to us. Everything is under control, Gabby will not be a problem after today. Here have a whiskey to calm your nerves." Claire smiles and offers to fix Danny a drink.
Danny turns pales as he asks , "What do you mean that she is not going to be a problem after today ?"
"Look you can write a big obituary about the heroin firefighter dying due to her injuries and make a big name for yourself. And I can pick up with Mat where we left off so we both get what we want. Now relax and have a drink of whiskey and toast to our success," Claire says as she plops two ice cubes into Danny's glass.
Danny looks at her in disbelief but accepts the drink to calm his nerves and gulps down the contents of the glass. " Are you sure you covered our tracks well enough? I don't want to be going to jail for this crap."
Claire shakes her head and says, "Step brother you will not be going to jail. I promise! Do you want me to fix you another drink?"
Danny not thinking nods his head, and replies, " Yeah but this time make it extra strong "
Claire says as she hands Danny another glass of the whiskey and clinks her own pop to his glass. "I made it extra strong! Cheers to my success step brother! "
Just then Danny starts to feel weak as the room spins around him and he passes out. He realizes that whatever Claire gave to Gabby she had also put into his drink. His last thought was at how stupid he had been to trust Claire in the first place. He falls onto the floor and Claire looks down at his passed out form and says, "Told you Danny, no prison for you! And you are gonna be in the headlines just like you wanted! I made your dreams of being famous come true!"
Claire picks up Danny's cell phone from his pockets and texts Casey "I loved her and couldn't let her go. Now you will know what it is like to lose everything you love just like you made me lose her. Danny" Everything was going much better than she expected as a contorted smile spreads across her face. Now all she has to do is wait for Danny to be identified as the stalker for her plan to be successful. Maybe if it all went well Matt might still, with time realize how much he really needed Claire. She closed her eyes and thought of what life would be like being married to Matt and how beautiful their children would be. Then she turned and packed her bags and headed to her newly rented room making sure to look at the apartment once more so that no trace of her was found. She got into her car and decided to head to Lakeshore to try to see if Gabby was dead yet.
Matt finally pulled his phone out of his pocket and was surprised to see a text message from an unknown number as well as several missed phone calls. He read the text and a feeling spread throughout his body wondering what the text meant. In a panic he tried to call Gabby's cell phone and it automatically went to voice mail. Christine saw the panicked look in her brother's eyes and heard him leave a message for Gabby, ' Gabby, baby call me asap. I need to know that you are safe." Matt finishes the message and hits the disconnect button just as he sees Shay enter the ER waiting room closely followed by the chief and Kelly. Panic registers in his brain just as they all look at him with the same surprised but grim expressions as they were all surprised to see him there.
Matt explains but then starts asking all of the questions that were running through is mind, " They brought my mom in for being beaten she is in being treated now. Wait, Why are you guys here? Did Antonio call you? Where is Gabby?"
Chief steps in front of Shay and says, "Casey sit down a lot happened after you left the memorial. Gabby collapsed at the service and is in the ER now. She went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance but the doctor's are working on her now." The Chief stops and doesn't tell Matt about the fire yet figuring that he had enough to deal with between his mom and Gabby. Matt collapses against the wall as he feels light headed. He begins to dry heave from the possibility of losing both his mother and Gabby at the same time. Just then an ER doctor came in and looked at them and said to everyone as they Matt and everyone stopped what they were doing and held their breath , "We did everything we could but I am afraid she did not make it. We lost her about 5 minutes ago. I need to know her next of kin is that one of you? "
