Chapter twenty five - The Battle Begins
Link opened his eyes and let out a gasp, Emily was standing up, her left arm outstretched. Zephyr stared at the girl with Link. The single candle flame grew larger and darkened in colour to tree green, her eyes were glowing the same colour.
Link whipped out his sword and shield as Dark recovered from her shield striking his sword hand like a Frisbee, he crashed to the floor with a thump with a strong kick from Link
"It's impossible." Dark snarled glaring at Emily, Link stepped in front of her. "The candle went green when-"
"The one who's closest to the Courage Candle is my daughter, not my sons." Link whispered with a smile on his face, Emily raised her head with her new green eyes "And somehow, she always knew that."
"Enough of this." Dark snarled getting up off the floor
"I've been waiting." Link smirked; his tattoo's glowing with eagerness.
Samuel panted and put a hand up to his right eye, he was crying blood now and his right arm hurt with the frequent and hard smashes against the bone with Clyde's sword, Clyde was still standing with minimalistic wounds on his face and shoulders, no more than a bad paper cut at most. Clyde brought his sword down behind his back to brace his body for a Spin Attack or was it a Helm Splitter? How did Dad do this?! How could he give a strategic approach against Clyde's brute force?
It's only a matter of time that the forces can last, one has to give. If you don't let yours down; than his will.
Samuel looked up as Clyde rubbed his sword shoulder, Samuel looked at the sword he held; razor blade thin from the tip of the blade to the well-crafted hilt, it reached his head from his hand. The entirety of it built for his hand by his father; but the blade that Clyde wielded was a two handed sword, to large and heavy for a boy. It was hurting him and every bash against his shield nearly broke his wrists.
"Dad trained us properly! You can't use a two handed sword of that size, you'll hurt yourself!" Samuel shouted ducking a blow so the sword sliced through the post of the bed like it were butter, Samuel rolled forward and drew his sword into a Spin Attack
The perfect Back Slice.
Clyde roared as he fell on his front only to flip on his back and kick Samuel away towards the broken window; he slipped through the bars and slid down the tiles, clinging onto the drainpipe for dear life. Not daring to look down as his sword clattered on the stony ground
"You've put up a fight. But it ends here." Clyde whispered moving out onto the roof, keeping away from the edge
"Don't do this, Clyde! I'm your brother!" Samuel shrieked as Clyde thrust down the sword on the roof, snapping the drainpipe his little brother clung onto. Samuel let out a scream as he crashed onto a lower roof, rolling down the tiles unable to grab onto anything.
Then a moment later the Clawshot attached to Samuel's belt shot out and seized the ledge on the walls leaving him hanging for a moment in mid-air
"Thanks, Dad." Samuel wheezed grabbing onto the slowly extending chain, Samuel nearly laughed at himself with nerves, he could feel Clyde's gaze on the back of his neck as he crawled onto the roof. Clyde slid down like he was snowboarding and landed with a flip that caught Samuel's chin, sending him across the roof. He shot the other Clawshot to the drainpipe to keep him from the fall and let the other return to his belt
"You don't give up do you?" Clyde sighed coming to the ledge; Samuel prayed the weight of the sword would not send him toppling over the edge of the roof, another one of their father's words of wisdom. Clyde seized Samuel's neck and stomped on his hand to make him let go of the Clawshot, he lost his balance and with no other safety precaution; his ears were on full alert for lose tiles under foot.
"Of course not! We have a lot to live up to!" Samuel shouted as Clyde's hand squeezed on his windpipe
"'We'?" Clyde snorted holding Samuel out, Samuel dipped a hand into his pouch, hoping to seize something useful as he could feel the sword in Clyde's other hand giving them the weight to drop "I have a life with Master now. Who cares about you?"
"Mom and Dad do!" Samuel shrieked as he ran out of air "Dad trained us for this! He trained us really well to stop Dark!"
Clyde's hand got tighter around his neck "Master trained me. Not a 'Dad'."
"Dad trained us from his legend. The one that is generations old, we can't just forget that!" Samuel gasped clawing at Clyde's hand
"A forgotten legend, perhaps. One that will be erased with your demise." Clyde grunted letting go of Samuel, Samuel fired the other Clawshot against the wall and hit it against his stomach; he shut his eyes in relief as he began to scale across the stone walls and up to the other Clawshot. Clyde was waiting for him, his sword ready. Samuel whined as he had nothing but a half broken shield on him along with his bow.
His bombs had mysteriously disappeared. He would get Emily back later.
Dad would kill him for this.
Samuel withdrew his bow and smacked it against Clyde's sword with the small metal piece in the centre; the wood creaked under the weight of the sword and the force against it.
But it refused to snap. Samuel prayed that his father's handy work would not have been wasted.
Clyde continued to press down, the string of the bow was starting to fray under the pressure.
Now or never.
Samuel pushed hard with a roar against the sword to send it slipping across the tiles. He wasted no time as he took an arrow from this quiver and shot it as the string snapped
Clyde cried in pain as the arrow shot him in the right hand, Samuel swallowed hard as the sword dropped and rolled to the ground below, taking Clyde with it. Samuel sent a Clawshot after him after attaching the other to his belt and jumping down.
The claw gripped Clyde's boot inches above the ground.
Samuel gave another nervous laugh and abseiled down the wall, Clyde was unconscious, his right hand a mess of blood and arrow.
He had won. He had beaten his brother in a fight!
Link stood still his eyes staring forward in the trance he went to in his fights. Dark was in the room, quite heavily wounded as he was. The right side of his tunic was beetroot red. Link smiled, one that would scare Dark in his boots. He could hear the blood drip on the floor from Dark's left leg and his arm had a large shallow scar running up it. Dark was rusty in a true fight. Meaning…
"Emily, Zephyr! Duck!" Link screamed taking his bow out in a blur and shooting a volley of arrows above the children's heads. Dark laughed
"Is that all you've got?" Dark scoffed as Emily rose off the ground
"Emily!" Link shouted shooting a Clawshot forward to catch her foot and pull her back
"Stop hiding behind people, Dark! If you can't come face me like a man, you are nothing but a coward!" Link snarled as Emily landed in his open arms, Dark's red eyes stared at him
"'Coward'?" Dark chuckled "is just a word the losing side throws around to make themselves feel better." Dark slid across the floor in his shadowy form "Coming from the person who hides in his own light? The full thing he depends on when he gets in trouble."
Link clenched his fists till his knuckles went white. His Triforce flashing bright with every passing heartbeat, the tattoo's shone like the sun
"You've spent years trying to kill me. Yet you've failed." Link said with a smile "You're a failure, Dark! That's all you've ever been and ever will be!"
Something in Dark snapped.
"So be it." Dark snarled vanishing in a cloud of black and red smoke. Link withdrew the black crystal from his pouch.
He shook himself of the wet from the floor, the smell was so familiar. He barked at the children in the corner, one who was hiding behind the other
"Quit being a baby." Emily groaned stamping on Zephyr's foot "It's my Daddy in his beast form. Silly boy."
"What's going to happen?" Zephyr gulped as Emily sat on Link's back
"I'm not sure. I don't think Daddy is either. Daddy?" Emily asked scratching him behind the ears to get a glance. Link kept his nose to the ground when he heard a rattle of a tail and the hiss of a smelling tongue. Link growled and dashed towards the doorway with Emily on his back and Zephyr at his heels.
The door slammed shut and bolted up in front of them
"You go nowhere." Dark hissed from somewhere in the room, Link transformed again and unclipped his Clawshots from his belt
"I do share." Link said giving Emily a kiss on the forehead as he handed her them
"Daddy, wait!" Emily shouted as the doors and windows bolted around them, each one making a dreadful clank on the walls, enough to send dust flying. Link shouldered a smaller door that led to the towers, a strong kick let the door shudder and give a gap for Emily and Zephyr to crawl through
He shoved Zephyr through as Emily refused to leave her father's side
"Emily, do this for me. You can't fight this battle." Link whispered as Emily wrapped her arms around Link's waist
"I love you, Daddy. Be careful." Emily sniffed; Link put a hand on the back of her head as he crouched to her level
"I love you too; I promise you'll be okay." Link mumbled almost choking up himself
"Here, Daddy. I caught her in the spring." Emily sniffed holding up a small bottle with a pink ball inside. Link took it in his hands "It's only fair that I share my stuff too."
"Enough of this!" Dark snarled, his roar shaking the chandeliers from the ceiling. Link pushed his daughter through the gap as a chandelier crashed in front of them
"Daddy!" Emily screamed staring through the gap; her father was lost in the mess of wire and candle wax of the chandelier
"We have to go." Zephyr moaned pulling at her sleeve, Emily turned to face Zephyr as another roar shook the castle, the floor tiles gave way and both children fell down with nothing but Emily's equipment and her father's Clawshots.
Link bared his teeth and crawled out from the fallen chandelier in his wolf form, his heightened senses taking in every detail. It was dark now, all the light from outside had been shut out. A pair of red eyes glared at him, no bigger than his paw. He charged forward with a roar only to be slammed across the floor by a huge tail
"You will die this day, Link. I swear it!" Dark shrieked. Link shook his head and got back to his feet. His wolf eyes now used to the darkness; he saw Dark in his new form. A huge snake. The beast towered over him, bringing chandeliers crashing to the floor as it slithered around. His eyes were narrowed and glowing a fierce purple, red spots that Link had mistaken for eyes were dotted across his back and a rattle on the end of his tail which what itself coiled around a pillar, which was already showing visible cracks. Dark opened his mouth to show two viciously sharp fangs and a writhing black tongue tasting the air. He lunged forward aiming to swallow Link in one bite but the mammal dodged and scratched a few scales off Dark's back as he jumped over him with his claws.
Daku, protect the children! Link howled as another chandelier crashed down on the floor, sending the tiles flying.
Samuel covered Clyde's ears as the bolted doors forced the ground to shudder and the echoing roar from inside forced everything to fall on the grass, including each other. "Mom, where are you?"
