Year 849
Reina woke up in the middle of the night in a sweaty panic. Her chest felt like it was being ripped out. Her head ached. Even her stomach felt unwell. She tripped her way to the bathroom, hands landing on the counter with a light thud.
What was going on?
She gripped at her chest in an attempt to numb the pain, yet somehow it was only getting worse. Her knees buckled, causing her to fall to the floor with a small yelp.
"No…" She murmured. This couldn't be happening. She'd done everything right. "No!" A small stream of blood trickled down her leg. Tears began to fill her eyes as the red liquid stained the floor.
"Rei?" A disgruntled Levi knocked on the door. His voice was raspy from just waking up. "Are you alright? I heard a noise."
"No…" She whispered softly, clutching at the floor.
"Do you need me to come in?" Before she could answer, Reina saw the doorknob begin to turn.
"No!" She shouted, more tears falling from her eyes.
"Rei, tell me what's wrong." She knew by the tone of his voice that he was fully awake now.
"Don't come in. I-it's a mess." Her skin felt cold and her head felt light. He twisted the knob once more. Reina had no more energy to argue with the man.
He found her kneeling on the floor, leaning into the counter. Blood soaked the tiles as she continued to cry.
"Rei…Shit…Rei…" He couldn't find any other words to say. Levi threw one of her arms over his shoulder as he tried to stand her up. She was too weak to do so herself, so he picked up her legs and clutched onto the blood-soaked nightgown and headed downstairs. The last thing she saw before her eyes closed was the front door of the house.
Levi…Do you think I'm cursed? I'm quite sure I am.
Every time something good happens, a bad thing happens to counteract it.
"She's stabilized. You guys really shouldn't be trying to have a baby when her heart is in this condition."
Levi, my heart hurts…But it's not like before.
…It feels like it's breaking.
"Just get her better."
"We're trying, sir. In the meantime, we can deport her to the Survey Corps Headquarters if it makes it more convenient to you."
"Good. Do that."
Reina woke up in the same room she woke up in when she got attacked by the titan years ago. She peered around; spotting Levi's sleeping head by her left side once more. She smiled and touched his head lightly. His black hair was soft and clean. She loved running her hands through it more than anything.
Levi grumbled in his sleep before his eyes squinted open, widening when he saw that Reina was awake.
"Rei," He whispered, squeezing her hand. He leaned in to kiss her hard on the lips. It was a desperate kiss, but Reina enjoyed it all the same.
"I'm sorry for th-" Reina started. Levi shut her up by kissing her one more time.
"Don't apologize." He stated. "I just want you to be okay."
"Levi, don't you see?" Reina sighed, "I'm never going to be okay. My heart is going to keep acting up until I die from it."
"Shut up."
"No, Levi! You need to-"
"Shut up!" He yelled. Reina's eyes widened at the outburst. He was frowning even more than usual. "You're not going to die any time soon. I'm making sure of it."
"Wh-what do you mean by that?" Levi looked into her eyes with determination. "Did you threaten to hurt the doctors if they don't heal me?"
No answer.
"Levi!" She smacked him in the arm.
"Ah, I see things are back to normal." The familiar blond head of the Commander popped in the doorway.
"Commander Erwin," Reina mumbled, nodding her head. Levi gave Erwin a glare.
"Well, Reina. Now that you're back, I can assume you'd like to take on some responsibilities in the medical unit once you've been given the thumbs up to leave. Speaking of which-"
"You're awake! Great!" A blond-haired doctor walked in the room with a clipboard and a calm smile. "All your stats are back to normal. You gave Corporal Levi quite a scare!" He said, walking around to Levi's side. Levi gave him a glare.
"When do you suppose our dear Reina will be able to leave the room?" Erwin asked the doctor.
"Whenever she feels ready to. Although, the recommendation is that she should rest for at least two more days." The clipboard-bearer smiled.
"Okay. Rei, get ready to stand." Levi mumbled just loud enough so Reina could hear him.
"What? Why? Levi, the doctor just said-"
"You're staying in my quarters and you're going to rest there until you get better. Do you understand?" His voice was so demanding, it took Reina a minute to comprehend what he said.
"U-uh, yeah." She muttered, staring down at her hands.
"Good." Levi stood, digging his hands under Reina's armpits to help lift her out of bed. He threw her left arm over his shoulder to help her balance as she walked.
Reina stumbled through the Survey Corps with all eyes on her and her husband. Whispers and words were exchanged as the two made their way to Levi's quarters.
"I heard that she's the reason the Corporal kept leaving last year." One voice whispered.
"Yeah, apparently he found her in the ghetto and instantly fell in love." Another said.
"No, she used to work here! She left because she kept distracting him, but it's obvious that it didn't work."
With every word, Levi's frown etched deeper and deeper. The whispers got louder with every step they took.
"As if the Corporal's got a girlfriend! She's probably just some village girl he's gonna fuck."
"I heard they used to get caught screwing in his office."
"That's not true. I was there! He just gave her never ending piles of paperwork."
"The ghetto thing has to be true, though. Look at how sickly she looks."
Levi paused, glaring at the crowd. "Don't you shitheads have training to do?! Get to your god damned stations already!" He yelled, causing Reina to flinch. She hated it when he raised his voice. He scoffed at the slowly dispersing group of soldiers before continuing their walk to his bedroom.
As they finally reached the room, Levi immediately opened the door and rushed Reina to his bed, laying her down softly.
"Don't listen to them."
"I-I wasn't." She replied half-heartedly. As much as she wanted to ignore them, rumours took a toll on her emotional stability, which was already in turmoil as it was.
"Rei…" He sat on the side of the bed, brushing his hand over her cheek. "I'm going to take care of you now. You're not leaving my sight anymore. We're going to get through this. I promise." He laced the fingers of his free hand through hers. A tear escaped her eye as she blinked.
"Thank you."
