Eponine couldn't help but smile at the fact Enjolras had allowed her to leave the flat even if the furthest they've got is the park around the corner. She inhaled deeply as she surveyed her surrounds, from the tree's losing their leaves and the children running around as if it was the middle of summer and their mother's chasing after them to place a hat onto their heads shouting that they will get sick if they didn't wear it. She didn't care if it was cold outside she was just happy to be outside in the fresh air as Enjolras's idea of fresh air is opening a window in the flat for her.
"Is you're pain medication still making you sick?" Enjolras broke Eponine from her thoughts as she turned her head away from everything happening around her and focused her sights on Enjolras. Even after all the time they've spent together it's still weird for her to think she will be marrying him and starting a family with him. Twelve months ago they hardly talked and now they're planning a life together and she doesn't know how long it will last, a year or maybe a life time only time will tell.
"A little" Eponine shrugged hoping he would drop the subject because when she asked to leave the flat she didn't think it would be talk about what comes out of her mouth.
"Maybe we should go and see your doctor, this can't be normal" Enjolras ran his hand through his golden curls that blew in the cold wind covering his face.
"They side I could have some sickness with them; it's just one of the side effects. I'm sure it will pass in time" she tried to make the conversation end once again. The last thing she wants is to see is another doctor anytime soon. Combeferre and Joly not included. "If anything we should start about packing if we're going to New York. Did your father say it is ok for you to take the time out work?" Eponine decided to change the subject herself, the last thing she wants to think about is her pending meeting with her father.
"I told him I would take the case he's asked me too so he's happy and it's not like I'm taking advantage. I've never asked for time before so he owes me" Enjolras threw his arm around Eponine's shoulder pulling her into his side as she rested her head on his shoulder. She hummed as a reply to show she was listening to him as the couple fell into a silence, the sound of children laughing and screaming around them and the wind blowing on the leaves that still hadn't fallen from their branch of the tree yet. "You know this thing is really annoying?" Enjolras lightly tugged on the bobble on the top of Eponine's hat. Every time she moved her head the smallest millimetre it would tickle his chin by rubbing up against the small amount of stubble he had.
"Learn to live with it" Eponine replied without looking at him.
"It's nice having this time off work" Enjolras thought allowed. Since the first day he started school he has never had any time off, not even during School holidays. His father would make him do some kind of work saying it would help with his future then straight from his schooling he started work at his father's law firm which will be his one day and now he finally has some time to himself and considering he thought he would hate having the time off he's beginning to enjoy it more.
"Is that so?"
"Very much so"
"Well good for you" Eponine replied knowing if she didn't answer then Enjolras would think she wasn't listening to him or even worse that she didn't care.
"I can start growing a beard when I'm not working as my father says I should always be clean shaven while working because it gives off a professional look" Enjolras didn't know if he was taking to Eponine or to himself but in all honestly he didn't care.
"So you're enjoying your time off because you don't have to shave and you can have this stubble?" Eponine finally lifted her head off his shoulder, trying to figure out if she was hearing her so called smart husband to be correctly and if he was talking about a beard or not.
"Yes, its nice waking up in a morning knowing I don't have to shave"
"You really are unbelievable at times and I can't believe we're having this conversation." Eponine shook her head wondering when her life became about Enjolras and his facial hair. "You are a grown man, if you want to grow a beard down to your knees then you can and no one should tell you that you can't."
"Good to know"
"Apart from me who is telling you not to grow a beard down to your knees, stubble works for you and is sort of sexy, even if I say so myself but a full on beard. I don't think"
"Let me get this straight, no one can tell me that I can't have a beard but then you tell me I'm not allowed one?" He asked wondering how their conversation had gone to his facial hair from where they were.
"Yes because I am to be your wife and as the says going, a happy wife equals a happy life" Eponine shot him a toothy smile hoping he would get the hint now that once they are married she will be in charge. The sooner he realises that the better because if he doesn't then he's in for a very unhappy life. "You might want to get that tattooed somewhere so you always remember it."
Enjolras drifted off into his own world as he started to make plans for his future or their future as it's now going to be because whatever he decided to do effects Eponine as well now. It's obvious that they will have a child at some point and will they raise that child in the flat in the middle of the city or will they move to the outside of town like his parents and have the house with the large garden for the child to play in. even if he knows he can't plan every detail of his life out, Enjolras had always been a person who likes to plan ahead and not knowing any of these things can unsettle him after all he likes his flat that is why he bought it but is it suitable to raise a child in?. When he bought it he was only thinking about himself as he never thought he would be getting married let alone thinking about a child.
The sound of Eponine's laughter broke him from his thoughts. "What's so funny?" he asked wondering what could be so funny she's almost doubled over with laughter.
"I'm looking at your future" she managed to contain her laughter long enough to reply to him.
"What do you mean?" Enjolras knitted his eyebrows in confusion as to how she could have seen his future when he doesn't even know what that is himself yet.
"Look over by the swings" Eponine turned her head to look back at the swings to see a man in his thirties with two children neither of them older than six. The man desperately trying to keep control of them both as they ran in opposite direction while he screamed at them to come back, to the point it looked like he was about to pull his own hair out and she couldn't help but imagine Enjolras with their children doing the same thing.
"Very funny but that will not be my future as I will only have one child" he replied taking Eponine by surprise.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean we'll only be having one child so I won't be running around like a mad man trying to keep control"
"Well this isn't going to work then" Eponine found herself saying before she could really think about what she was saying.
"How is this not going to work?"
"Because I want more than one baby, you're an only child so you don't know what it's like to grow up with siblings but it's amazing. That is why this isn't going to work" she tried to explain, a part of her knew they should have spoken about this long before now but when they started this whole things, it was a fake marriage and one baby and she thought when she spilt from Enjolras she would find someone else and have more children then but not they've both made it clear they both want more they never discussed this.
"Eponine, six months ago I didn't want any of this, marriage or a baby and now everything has changed. I want to marry you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you but the idea of a baby terrifies me and you want more than one. If I had my way we wouldn't have any but I know how much you want a baby and I'm willing to give you that."
"Well it's nice to know you're willing to sacrifice that for me and I don't want to sound ungrateful but that isn't enough"
Eponine stood up from the bench and started to hop away, it's time like this she wished she hadn't injured her leg as she wants to run away before she says something she'll regret. All this time she believe he wanted the same thing she did, a life together and a family but now he's made it clear he only wants the family part to make her happy but he should want it as well and finding out he doesn't want that changes everything. Yes she loves but she doesn't want to him sacrifice anything for her just to make her happy.
She knew everything was to perfect but she didn't want to believe anything could go wrong but now everything has blown up in her face, Eponine can't help but wonder if she's made the wrong decision. Maybe she should just walk away from Enjolras now so he doesn't feel as if he needs to do this just to please her after all she can find someone who wants the same thing as her and doesn't feel like they have to do this.
"Eponine wait" she heard Enjolras call from behind her, she looked over her shoulder to see him slowly jogging towards her.
"Leave me alone I have thinking to do" she shot back needing time to clear her mind and think about everything.
"I can't leave you alone, what if something happens to you?"
Spinning around to face him, Enjolras could see the anger in her eyes something he hasn't seen very often. "Believe it or not I was fine before you came along. I am not a child; I am very capable of looking after myself. Now leave me alone" she spat back through gritted teeth. "Just go back to your tower and be alone because that's when you're happiest."
Enjolras stood and watched as Eponine moved further and further away from him, he wanted to run after her and scream at her that she's wrong. Yes he liked being alone but that was before Eponine came crashing into his life and turned everything upside down by making it impossible for him to live without her. "I used to be" he mumbled knowing she wouldn't hear him but hoped she knew how he felt. How he doesn't want to be able anymore, how he wants her by his side day and night. Not only does he want her as his wife but also his best friend, she is the one person he can tell anything too and she will not judge him and now he can't help but feel it is all over.
I know things kind of got weird there in the middle but I feel it all came together in the end but you can tell me if I'm wrong.
I hoped you like it.
Do you think this is the end for Eponine and Enjolras?
Will they be able to move past this?
Please leave a review.
