Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Here is the next chapter, sorry it took so long but I wanted to get it right for you guys. I start back to school on the 12th so once again updates will most likely slow down. I have finally made a list of the request's ya'll have sent me, so I'll get to work on those. If you asked for something I will do it but it may take a little while. Thanks for reading, I hope you like it! =D

It was gonna be one of those days, long and tiring. I could tell from the get go, breakfast was a disaster.

A private who might be clumsier than me spilled coffee all down the front of my shirt, luckily it was only somewhat warm so I wasn't burned. It does worry me that he would be handling a gun though. So I rushed back to the room I shared with Peggy to get another shirt, thankfully I had a couple extras.

It was on my way back into the mess hall that things got worse.

I slipped through the food line to get back to the table Howard and Peggy were at but the guy I walked in front of thought I was cutting in front of him. So he shoved me forward, right into the biggest man I'd ever seen. He was well over six feet tall so when he turned around he had to look down to see me. I gulped and just pointed behind me.

"Ah, I'm sorry! H-he pushed me, it was an accident."

I swear he growled, not at me but at the poor guy behind me.

"Wait your turn like everyone else punk!"

Glad he wasn't mad at me, I started to sneak away. We were starting to cause a scene.

"Hey blame the pushy broad not me!"

I huffed, insulted that he would call me that. So I glared at him as the enormous man's gaze turned to me. He looked at me, his piercing amber colored eyes making me feel uncomfortable so of course I started to babble like an idiot.

"I'm sorry, I was just trying to get back to my table. Someone spilled coffee on my shirt so I had to go back to change. So -"

"God do you ever shut up?!"

The rude private, who I'd forgotten was still standing there startled me with his outburst. But I was more surprised by the reaction of the much larger man, he lunged forward and grabbed him by the throat. His face twisted in a fierce smirk, and I had to be imagining things because it looked like his eyes had narrowed to slits like a cat.

"Don't you know how to treat a lady?"

I was afraid that any minute now he would start beating him to a pulp and I'm sure he would have if it weren't for his friend.

"It's too early to start fights Victor. Let him go."

So that was his name, fitting.

There was a beat of silence before Victor dropped the man. He scrambled backwards, a look of terror on his face. Ignoring the coward on the floor I turned to the two men in front of me.

"Thank you Victor and…"

Something akin to a smile crossed his face.

"Jimmy, my brother."

The other man scowled at him before looking at me.

"James, its James."

I smiled at them.

"James then, thank you both."

I glanced back at the sniveling private, a look of shock still on his face.

"I'm sorry about all that. I didn't mea-"

Just then someone from the back of the line started yelling.

"Hey up there, we're all hungry! Keep moving!"

Quickly I moved out of the way so the line could start moving again, quite embarrassed at the hold up on my account.

I looked up to say bye to them, but they were both back in line for food so I headed back to the table. Maybe I'd see them around.

Finally back at the table with Howard and Peggy, I started to eat my slightly cold breakfast.

"Wow."

I looked up to see both of them starting at me.

"What? What is it, is there something on my face?"

Peggy smiled and shook her head while Howard just started laughing.

"Seriously you guys, what?"

Wiping his eyes Howard grinned at me.

"I've just never seen someone so…"

I narrowed my eyes.

"So, what?"

He put his hand to chin, a contemplative look on his face.

"I've just never met anyone like you before. Someone so capable of getting into trouble."

I rolled my eyes, like I hadn't heard that one before.

"Old news Howard, I hear that every other day. So what's on the agenda for today?"

He snickered, while Peggy smirked over the rim of her cup.

"Whatever Anna. Ah, today I'm starting on file 9."

He looked at me expectantly, as I wracked my brain to remember which one that was.

"Uh, that was the tiny hidden listening device?"

He schooled his face into a neutral look but his eyes betrayed his amusement.

"In so many words, yes. But before you come down to the lab you still have to clear those recruits."

Oh that, I'd forgotten I still needed to do that. I hope I can remember the way to the nurse's office.

As if reading my thoughts Peggy grinned at me.

"I can point you in the right direction, but after this you'll need to be able to get there by yourself."

I looked down, I could feel my face heating up in embarrassment.

"I know, thanks Peggy. I'll get the hang of it eventually."

"Sure you will, just like I'm not smarter than big and stupid over there."

I glanced at Howard to see him pointing to Victor who busy tearing into his food. I glared at the smirking Stark and whapped him on the back of the head, ignoring his protests.

Before I knew it, it was time to go and get on with the day, so after taking care of my tray I followed Peggy out of the mess hall leaving Howard still sitting at the table.

"You know, you really have a horrible sense of direction Anna."

I sighed and smiled.

"Yeah, it's just something I've learned to deal with. I live up to the stereotype that's for sure."

I looked over at her just in time to see her eyes widen and a grin creep onto her face.

"What, what is it?"

She pointed down the hallway and I felt the color leave my face at what I saw.

Down the hall, standing right outside the nurse's office was Victor and James. I winced as Victor shoved another man to the ground when his bag bumped into him. His brother on the other hand just sighed and helped him up. He seemed nice enough, but Victor…

I jumped, when I heard Howard's voice right behind me.

"Wow sweetheart, you have the worst luck."

I looked at the two hulking men and then back to Peggy.

"You mean…I, but look at them!"

Peggy put her hand to her face to keep from laughing, Howard had no such qualms. He started laughing again while I glared at him.

"It's not funny! How was I supposed to know, I mean both of them look like they've been soldiers for years. Oh gosh this is so humiliating, how am I supposed to look professional now?"

My only answer was Howard shoving me in their direction, and wave from Peggy.

I huffed and tried to compose myself as I walked over to them.

"I don't know why we have to do this, it a waste of time."

"Just follow the rules Victor."

Neither of them seemed to notice me come up so I cleared my throat.

"Ahem."

Both looked down at me.

"I'm Nurse Harrison, from what I understand I just need to give you the all clear. Is that right?"

A look of surprise crossed both their faces for a second, before James smiled at me. Victor just stared down at me impassively.

"Yeah, that's it."

A bit unsure I motioned for them to go in the little examination room. The room felt smaller than it was with both them and myself inside. Robotically I started going through the motions, there really wasn't much to do anyway both of them were in excellent condition. I was just going to check eyesight and reflexes, because that was really the only thing missing from their files.

"So what's your story red?"

I paused in adjusting the eye chart, which had somehow been knocked askew and looked over at James.

"Excuse me? What did you call me?"

That was a new one, I'd never been called that before.

"Red, for obvious reasons."

Slowly I smiled, add a new nickname to the resume.

"Of course, well I just seem to end up where I'm needed most."

He grinned.

"Same here, I'd have thought that a pretty little thing like you would have wanted to settle down though."

I raised a brow as I started to check his reflexes. I was still a bit nervous with Victor so I left him for last.

"Sorry to disappoint, but I've got a lot I want to do before that."

He snorted, an amused look on his face.

The eye exam went quickly, both of them passing with flying colors. Finished, James hopped off the table and leaned against the door. Warily I moved over to Victor.

"I won't bite you red."

Behind me his brother started to laugh, not assuaging my fears at all. I turned around and glared at him, only causing him to laugh harder. When I turned back to Victor, he had moved to where we were face to face. Instead of flinching back like I wanted to, I took the opportunity to study him as he did the same to me.

The word I kept coming back to was feral, there was just something about him that was wild and it scared me. He whole person screamed dangerous and he knew it, there was an animalistic vibe about him. Realizing I needed to finish, I quickly gauged his reflexes to be normal. He jumped off the table and grinned at me, although it came across more like a sneer.

"We good to go?"

I nodded as I signed off on the paperwork, I'd file it away later.

"Yes, you're free to go."

Victor walked out without a backward glance, but James stayed.

"Sorry about him, Victor is a little…"

"Menacing?"

"I was gonna say intimidating. Well thanks for taking care of that for us."

I smiled at him, James was much easier to talk to than his brother.

"No problem, it's my job. Be careful out there, I'd hate to see you back here because you got hurt."

He grinned like I had said something funny.

"I doubt that'll happen so don't worry about it."

"Alright then, see you around James."

To my surprise he reached down and ruffled my hair.

"Take care of yourself red."

Then he left and headed in the direction Victor had gone. I smiled, it's always nice to make new friends.

I fixed my hair and then I straightened up the room for next time before hurrying to find Howard.

Proud I only had to ask three people before I found the lab, I started to go in but stopped short at the sound of an explosion.

"Too much, next time cut it in half."

I peaked around the door to see Howard picking himself up off the ground. He looked up and shot me a grin.

"There you are doll, come on in don't be shy."

Coming in the large room, my eyes were instantly drawn to the blast mark on the floor.

"What happened in here?"

"I was trying to see if I could make a pocket watch into a bomb, it worked great just a little too much kick."

I narrowed my eyes.

"I thought you were working on listening devices."

He shrugged.

"Changed my mind, now come over here I need you test this."

I walked over to the table he pointed at, it was covered in an odd assortment of household items.

"What's all this for?"

"Untested espionage gadgets from S.S.R.'s R&D department, they asked me to make sure they work and upgrade if necessary."

He cut me off before I could ask what he wanted me to do.

"I need you to write down what each one does, as well as testing out a few yourself."

He motioned to a few of the more feminine looking objects.

"See this looks like an ordinary broach, but look.

He picked up a pretty looking onyx broach, but with a twist of the gem a pointed spike emerged.

"See, now it's a lock pick. Neat right?"

I took it from him and smiled.

"Yes, very. Now we should get started."

He smirked and tossed me a clipboard.

"Certainly sweetheart."

At a quarter till eleven I told Howard I was going to head to bed, he told me to go ahead that he'd shut things down in a little while. I didn't really believe him but I left anyways, yawing as I walked back to the room Peggy and I shared.

Thankfully it wasn't too hard to find my way back, getting lost now would not be fun. Not that it ever was.

When I got there Peggy was already asleep so I quietly got ready for bed, shedding my nurses outfit for sleep clothes. I didn't bother with my hair before climbing into bed and drifting off the second my head hit the pillow.

"Hey you!"

I felt someone shaking my shoulder, funny that doesn't sound like Peggy.

"Miss, wake up."

I rubbed my eyes and slowly blinked. In front of me was an older looking man with a young boy.

"Yes how may I help you?"

I got up from my chair and stretched, confused as to where I was. I was back in a nurse's outfit, but not the one I'd been wearing. Did the bracelet go off in my sleep and send me somewhere else?

"Do you think you could take my grandson to the cafeteria? I need to stay with Meredith, the doctor will be coming in a minute."

I furrowed my brow, trying to figure if I knew the man. He sighed, seemingly exasperated with me.

"Meredith Quill, my daughter, room 241."

Looking around I could see that I was in a hospital, the oncology ward upon a further look. I nodded like I knew what he was talking about and said the first believable lie I could think of.

"Sorry sir, I'm new to this ward. Of course I'd be glad to help."

He gave me a tight smile and nudged the boy toward me.

"Alright Peter this nice lady will take you to get something to eat. When you're done come back up to the room."

With that he walked off, leaving me with a very despondent looking boy. He couldn't be more than ten or eleven, poor thing. I bent down to his height much like I used to do with Tony.

"Hi Peter, I'm Annalise."

He didn't look up.

"Hi."

Right then and there I decided it was my mission to get this kid to smile. Impulsively I grabbed his hand, which caused him to look up at me. He had cloudy olive eyes, much too sad if you ask me.

"How about we go get some food, whatever you want alright?"

I thought I saw a spark of something in his eyes but it was gone as quickly as it had come.

"Okay, sure."

His hand in mine, we made our way to the cafeteria. Luckily I was able to find it without too much trouble thanks to the many signs pointing the way. When we got there Peter never said anything. He only pointed to what he wanted. I just got an apple, not all that hungry. I watched as he ate his PB&J sandwich in silence, after I minute I couldn't take it anymore.

"So Peter, do you have any nicknames?"

He looked up at me, a confused expression on his face.

"Huh?"

"My brother's name is Peter, I was just wondering if you had a nickname I could call you."

"Oh, well my…mom calls me her little star-lord sometimes."

The slight smile dropped at the mention of his mother. The look on his face was heartbreaking.

"Hey, it's alright to be sad Peter."

He frowned at me, anger showing in his eyes.

"I heard them say she's going to die. How would you know what that feels like?"

I reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

"I know believe me I know. I've lost people before, but the thing you have to remember is that the people you love never really leave you. They're always with you."

I let go of his hand, while he seemed to be thinking about what I'd said. Then I noticed the Walkman clipped to his belt loop.

"What were you listening to?"

He perked up at the mention of music.

"Awesome mix, me and mom put it together."

I grinned at him, internally high-fiving myself. He was smiling!

"My little brother made me a mix tape one time, it meant the world to me."

"The one with my name?"

I smiled thinking of Tony.

"No, my other brother Tony. I have quite the extended family, I'm adopted you see."

His eyes widened.

"Really?"

"Yeah, except I do the adopting."

He wrinkled his nose.

"What do you mean?"

I laughed, it did sound funny.

"I lost my family a long time ago, so when I found people I loved like family I adopted them as my own."

"So your brothers aren't your real brothers?"

"Not in blood, but in every other way they are my family. Same goes for my dad and cousins."

Tasha and Clint were like really cool older cousins, Loki was my best friend, and Thor was kinda like a long distance family member who you never got to see but loved anyway. Pepper was my brother's super tolerant girlfriend who I loved like a sister. Then there was the newest additions, Peggy and Howard. Peggy was like an older sister and Howard was the family friend that wouldn't stop flirting with me.

Steve was…a special case.

"Wow, that's so cool!"

The childlike innocence I knew he had was showing.

"When you find people worth hanging onto it's important to do so."

I glanced over at the wall clock, it had been an hour and a half. We should get back before his grandpa starts to wonder where he is.

"Come on Peter, let's go back to your grandpa."

He sighed.

"Alright, if we have to."

I laughed at the pouty look on his face. I always get the pouty ones. Finding the way back was fairly easy and in no time we were in front of his mother's room. I was about to knock when he grabbed my arm.

"Annalise wait, will you be here tomorrow?"

The pleading look on his face about broke me.

"Call me Anna, everyone does. As for tomorrow I'm not sure Peter. I have a bit of an erratic schedule so just in case, I want you to keep this."

I tugged the ribbon I was using to hold my hair in a ponytail out and tied it around his wrist. It was a deep green, because I always had something green on my person.

"There, that way I can be here all the time."

I tied a little loose so it wouldn't be too tight and in a knot so it wouldn't come undone. An idea hitting me, I searched my pockets for a pen. Finding an old looking sharpie I wrote the words Star Lord on the ribbon, careful not to get any on his skin. He looked at it and then up at me.

"You don't talk to me like I'm a dumb kid, like I'm not gonna understand. No one but my mom does that, please don't go."

I felt my heart wrench at his words.

"I can't promise you that, it wouldn't be fair. But I have a feeling I'll see you again; maybe tomorrow, maybe not."

I could see him tearing up. It was completely understandable, from what I could tell besides his mom and grandpa he really didn't have a lot of family. I wished I could stay longer, the tears in his eyes echoed another little boy who wanted me to stay. I knelt down and hugged him, fighting off my own tears.

"Can I adopt you, like you adopted your family?"

I pulled back to look him in the face, a look of surprise on mine. I had only known him for a few hours, and here he was asking me to be a part of his family.

"Really?"

He sniffed and then smiled at me.

"I always wanted a sister."

I grinned at him.

"You asked for it kid."

The grin that lit up his face made him look like he was truly happy, like he wasn't in a hospital with his mom dying of cancer.

"Peter, come on in then we need to go home."

Both of us looked up to see his grandpa standing there, the light in his eyes fading at the reminder of where he was. I hugged him one last time before I stood up.

"Bye Anna."

I grabbed his hand and tapped the ribbon.

"Remember, the people you care about never really leave you Peter. I hope to see you again soon."

He nodded and turned to go in his mother's room, leaving me outside with his grandpa.

"Thank you."

I glanced up at him.

"It was my pleasure, Peter is a great kid."

"Things have been hard for him lately, getting in fights and everything with his mom. He needed that, something to make him smile again. So thank you."

I smiled softly at the tired man in front of me.

"You're welcome, I'll let you get back to your daughter now."

He nodded and closed the door behind him. I walked off to the one of the waiting rooms to sit down for a second. Yawning, I dropped into one of the somewhat uncomfortable chairs and closed my eyes. I would just take a quick cat nap and then I'd be as good as new.

"Anna, you need to get up now."

I groaned and turned over.

"Just second, I'll be up in a second."

Obviously my word was not taken seriously because my blanket was yanked off. My eyes flew open to see a smirking Peggy looking down at me.

Wait…I was just in hospital with Peter. It couldn't have just been a dream, could it?

"Morning Peggy."

She snorted.

"No good morning Anna?"

I rolled myself out of bed and glowered at her.

"Good morning is for people who enjoy mornings, I do not therefore I say morning."

Her eyes twinkled in amusement.

"Very well, you need to hurry. Breakfast will be over soon."

Quickly changing clothes and attempting to do something with my hair I rushed thru the tiny bathroom.

"Hey Peggy, you haven't seen my green hair ribbon have you?"

She stuck her head in the room.

"No, last I saw it, it was in your hair yesterday."

I grinned, that means I really did give it to Peter. I must have transported in my sleep.

"Oh, alright. I'll find another then."

In a hurry I grabbed a blue ribbon and pulled my hair to a manageable state.

"Okay let's go."

As soon as we finished breakfast, Peggy and I headed off in different directions. Finding the lab in record time (I only had to ask two people) I came in to find Howard and a few of his other assistants gathered around a newspaper. I came up behind Howard and tapped him on the shoulder.

"What's all the commotion?"

He turned around and grinned at me.

"It hasn't even been a week and your boy's already making headlines. See for yourself."

He thrust the paper in my hands and on the cover was Steve in his Captain America suit.

The headline read: Captain America Call For War Bonds!

Beneath was a picture of Steve surrounded by a bunch of girls dressed in like outfits. A tiny part of me couldn't help but wish I was there with him. Before I could look anymore the paper was snatched from my grasp.

"Enough of that, you can look all you want later. I have something for you to test."

I frowned, the smirk on his face spelled trouble.

"What is it?"

In that moment I swear I was looking at Tony with one of his crazy schemes.

"It's a drug that will knock you out thru skin on skin contact. This particular form of it is in lipstick, I have to make sure it works so…"

It took me a second to get what he was saying.

"Absolutely not!"

He laughed at my outraged face.

"Maybe later then."

I sighed, turns out Howard is just as much of a handful as Tony.

Hey I was wondering if any of you out there were artists and if anyone wanted to draw Anna. It could be with Tony as a kid or of her and Steve or whatever you feel like. I can't draw to save my life but I know how many talented people are on this site so I just thought I'd ask. If you want to message me or leave a review and I can give a more specific description of Anna. I'm not sure if anyone even read these things so if you do and want to draw Anna just let me know. Thanks so much you guys! =D

P.S. Have any of you seen the first episode of Agent Carter? It is awesome!
